Can't connect thru dial-up on AEBS 802.11g modem

I have a new MacBook Pro 15" and discovered it has no internal modem. So I bought an Airport Extreme Base Station with modem (802.11g) because I'm going on vacation in a remote area and can only access the internet through dial-up.
I'm testing the modem at home first and have had no luck. I set up the new station to "connect by modem." I can connect to the new Airport network, but when I try to connect to the internet (via AOL), I don't get a dial tone and of course, don't connect. Network diagnostics said everything checked out except internet connection and server.
I attached the new base station to my DSL line to see if that worked and here I am--querying you good folks (using WDS). I tried the dial-up on a separate phone line, in case it was something in the DSL wiring that was causing interference, but no luck. Maybe the DSL is throughout every phone plug in the house? Should I be trying the dial-up on a line with no DSL access?
The Help menus suggest clicking "Modem" in Network options to choose PPP connections, but since there's no internal modem, I don't have a Modem option in my System Preferences.
Surely, it's not supposed to be this difficult to connect through dial-up?
All suggestions welcome!

The modem in the 802.11b/g AEBS is not a DSL modem.
You will need a DSL modem with an Ethernet output.
You will connect the output of the DSL modem to the
AEBS's WAN port.
Thanks, Duane, but I think my question may be unclear. Here at home, I have a DSL modem and right now I am accessing the internet with it connected to AEB's WAN port.
However, I will be traveling to a place with only dial-up access and want to take the AEBS with me, so I can use its dial-up modem.
I've tried to practice at home by connecting the AEBS thru its internal modem port to my phone line, but I can't get it to work or even get a dial tone when AOL begins its connection routine.
Since my home phone is set up for DSL, I was wondering if that might be causing the problem. I've been disconnecting the DSL modem and plugging the phone line directly into the AEBS modem port. But all attempts to log on to AOL by dial-up have failed.
Thanks for your help!

  • Can't configure AEBS 802.11g

    Hey there All,
I've got an AEBS 802.11g. I had it running at my church with a secured network and life was good. A couple of weeks ago,  the "Windows" guy plugged a PC into the ethernet port on the AEBS and then the network freaked out. I couldn't connect to the network I'd set up using my MacBook, the Mac(17" FP G4)I have at church or my iPod Touch. I was finally able to re-set it and have it located with the default configuration but, It shows a yellow/amber dot in the Airport Utility sidebar, configuration fails and shows error -6754. Any ideas on what might have happened? Did the Windows box/software damage my Base Station?
    Thanks.

It's highly unlikely that just connecting a Windows-based device can "damage" the base station, but of course, it is always possible that the base station's configuration was altered to render it non-workable.
I would suggest starting by performing a "factory default" reset on the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). This should get the AEBS in the same configuration it was in when first removed from the box. This would mean the AEBS would provide an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like Apple Network NNNNNN.
Once verified, that you can connect to the AEBS, either by wire or wireless, you can then use the AirPort Utility to reconfigure it as needed.

  • Share printer only with old AEBS (802.11g)

    Hi
I have two AEBS connected in a WDS. One is the old 802.11g and the other the 1.gen 802.11n.
I have read that establishing a WDS with mixed (802.11g & 802.11n) AirPorts can only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode AND for every base station added the overall bandwidth would be cut in half.
What I want is to use the old AEBS to share a printer only. Not internet or extend the network.
Is it possible to do this still just having one network to connect to?

I don't have the same products here to test this out, but if you have some spare time and want to try this.....it might work.
You might want to write down your WDS settings before you make any changes so that you can go back to them if needed.
Using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup on both devices.....
Configure the 802.11n AirPort Extreme normally so that the Wireless Mode is "Create a wireless network"
Set the Radio Mode to 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
    Set Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Update to save settings
    On the older AirPort Extreme......
See if there might be a setting for Wireless Mode to "Join a wireless network". You may need to hold down the option key on your Mac to see this choice if it is there
Wireless Network Name would be the name of the 802.11n network
Security = same as 802.11n network
Password = same as 802.11n network
    Confirm
    Update

  • I moved and can't connect to dial up

I recently moved somewhere that has no high speed connection available. All that we have is dial-up and I can't get my mac osx 10.4.11 online. Is there anything I can do?

You could provide more details as to exactly what happens/doesn't happen and any error messages you receive.

  • Can I connect 2 printers to my AEBS

Is it possible to have 2 printers connected to the AEBS with the use of an USB hub? I tried to do a search for this but was unable to find any info. Thanks much.

Yes, you can connect multiple printers, using a USB hub, to the USB port on the AEBS. Note that you may need to use a powered-hub when multiple devices are connected this way.

  • Can't connect to internet w/ Graphite ABS via ADSL modem

    Hi,
I'm trying to get my parents set up with a wireless net connection using my old graphite ABS & airport card with his G3 iMac (I'm not sure of the precise model, it's a graphite case and I think it was the last one before the flat panels were introduced) and a new ADSL modem (D-Link DSL-300T).
    - The ADSL modem is working and can get a working internet connection (verified by connecting it directly to the Mac via Ethernet).
    - The ABS seems to be working, and can "talk" to the modem because it is possible to navigate into the modem's setup screens in Safari via the Airport connection.
    - All Airport and network status screens/messages say the Airport is working and connected to the internet via Ethernet.
    - I have checked all the modem and ABS settings with the ISP, modem manufacturer, and against my own working setup (using the same model of modem, an Airport Express, a G4 iBook and G5 iMac).
    - I have tentatively ruled out a DNS problem by trying to navigate to web pages using the "numbers" (with help from the ISP) but still had the same problems.
    - In every case when trying to navigate to any internet page (using its domain name or "numbers") Safari says it can't find the server.
    - We've tried the old switch everything off and then back on again in the order modem -> ABS -> iMac with no success (waiting for each component to fully start up before switching on the next).
What am I doing wrong? And/or what else can I try?
I'd be extremely grateful for any help, as at the moment I feel like I've let my parents down by failing to get this working for them.
    Thanks in advance,
    Darren

    Hi,
The connection to the ISP is fine as when a Mac (his iMac or my iBook) is connected directly to the modem via Ethernet we can connect to the internet.
So the modem seems to be working fine, the problem seems to be the ABS sitting in the middle.
(The ISP requires PPPoA but this is all correctly set up in the modem).
I'd be grateful for any further advice.
    Thanks, Darren

  • Can't connect to internet with new wireless n "Extreme" modem

I've had a D-Link DI-604 router for about 4 years-- and wanted to go wireless with an Apple Extreme but first have borrowed my neighbor's D-Link DIR-635 to just see if this will work in my brick house etc. (3 stories, lots of cement and brick...)
Well I get as far as the 192.168.0.1 and then "clone" my MAC address (nothing to do with a Macintosh that...). Note: I was using the same computer to connect to the internet as I previously had used with the D-Link DI-604.
I also give a manual (easy-to-remember) 5-letter password to my wireless connection--
But although this "reboots" the modem, it does NOT let me connect to the internet...
So I'm back to my D-Link 604 cable (wired) only...
One thing the set-up asked for is my HOST name. The only thing I see in the Network System Preferences is an ethernet number: 00:16:cb:cd:6c:3e but I don't find a "HOST" name-- and is that really needed? (In Belgium I'm using an ISP provider "VOO")
Any comments really appreciated-- I could actually see a fairly strong signal from the wireless router (I named it "SteveHermee" and I could see strong bands even from the top floor, with router in the basement...)-- but I could never connect to the internet via CABLE (wired) or wireless.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Can't connect any devices to wifi through actiontec C200a modem

We have centurylink actiontec c2000a modem at work. this is the 4th modem in the last year and a half. Haven't been able to get the wifi to work on any of them. Any suggestions? Thanks

First, make absolutely, positively sure that the password you are using is current (not a correct but old password) and entered correctly. Note that case is significant in passwords (i.e., a is not the same as A), and look out for look-alike characters (O vs 0, 1 vs l, etc.).
If all seems OK try restarting your WiFi router by removing power to it for 30 seconds.

  • Upgraded to 10.6.7 and now can't connect to wireless.

    Hi,
I'm not the most experienced when it comes to this type of thing so I will try and be as detail as I can so that someone may be able to provide me with a solution.
I have a 13"  MacBook (about 4 years old) and recently increased my RAM from 512mb to 2gb and installed Snow Leopard which connected to the internet fine, but I then performed some Software Updates so the system is now 10.6.7 and since then I haven't been able to connect to the internet. My router shows up in the click down menu for airport but it tries to connect for about 7 seconds and then says "Connection Timed Out", I can get on the internet perfectly fine on other computers and from my iPhone so I have no idea why the MacBook can't connect. My router is a "Belkin Adsl Modem with wireless-G router" model FSD7632-4 version 1000uk.
If anyone needs anymore information I will try and give it to you.
    Many Thanks

I see you already have a correct answer, but you should try to avoid not having a secured network. My first advice would be to at least filter the MAC adresses of your know devices if your router support this feature. My second advice would be to try to secure your connection with WEP instead of WPA/WPA2, it is not as secure as WPA, but it is much better than no encryption and will probably work with all your wireless devices (my experience).
    Cheers.
    J.B.

  • Can I connect TC to DV4210-WA modem?

Can I connect my TC to a DV4210-WA Inventel modem? I get no access to the internet when I follow the basic instructions.

Simply use the TC in bridge.. plug into the TC from the computer or use wireless and airport utility.. go to the internet tab and make sure it is set to dhcp.. go to the network tab and set to off (bridge mode).
The later being the most important.. I think the internet will automatically go to dhcp in that case.
Make sure you create a wireless network.. not extend.. you can turn off the wireless in the modem.

  • Can't connect WRT54GL router to Motorola Surfboard cable modem SB6120

I can't connect my router (WRT54GL) to my new cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB6120).
    Some info:
    1)  Cable modem works perfectly when connected directly to computer ethernet port
    2)  ISP is Optimum Online
    3)  Using Automatic DHCP setting on router
    4)  Using MAC cloning on router
    5)  I can access the router's admin screen from the PC
    6)  I can connect to the router wirelessly, but no internet access
    7)  I've tried powering down everything multiple times, still no internet access
    8)  I upgraded the router firmware to 4.30.14
    9)  The "link" light on the cable modem never lights up when connected to the router
    10)  This is very frustrating
    Thanks

    Hi
I've tried two ethernet cables, no luck.  On the router, I get lights for Power, WLAN and the ethernet port that the pc is connected to.  The "internet" light is not lit.
When the modem is connected directly to pc the link is lit up, just not when it's connected to router.
The internet light won't turn on as you need to plug something on the WAN port. And that should be the cable coming from the modem.
When you connected your pc directly to the modem, do you get internet access?

  • Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter Only Connects to 802.11G on WRT310N

I recently purchased the Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter. I plugged it into my Xbox (which is current on updates, including the adapter drivers), and am able to successfully connect to my WRT310Nv1 using the "Mixed" mode, but only at 802.11G, not 802.11N. If I force my router into "Wireless-N Only" mode, the Xbox is able to see the signal, but will not connect. The WRT310Nv1 has the most recent firmware (v1.0.09) installed, and I am using WPA2 Personal, AES encryption.
I've scoured the internet and haven't been able to find a solution yet. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I have an Xbox 360 Slim with the built-in Wireless N and I have the EXACT same problem.  I also tried forcing my router into Wireless-N only mode and the Xbox will not connect.  It will only connect in "mixed" mode but at 802.11G.  This is very frustrating.
If any one can help us out it would be much appreciated!!

  • Can only connect one laptop via AEBS wifi

i was able to use my internet service with my Apple Airport Express Base Station (AEBS) for months without any problem and it was capable of simultaneous internet sharing (via wifi) among 3 laptops without the need to enter / directed to the internet provider's portal per connection (to enter account number and service reference number for authorization - works like a username and password for the connection)
not until their so-called "network upgrade" as stated by my internet provider's tech support - I am now only able to connect a single laptop via the AEBS
attempting to connect the other 2 laptops simultaneously with the 1 laptop on wifi connection was unsuccessful
can not connect more than one laptop to my internet service through the AEBS simultaneously
and whenever one laptop tries to connect to my internet service provider (via AEBS), you are immediately directed to the internet service provider's portal to enter your Account Number and Service Ref Number - you have to go through this every time you want to connect
i have already reset the settings of the AEBS and still, the problem persisted
any ideas on how to resolve this issue? is the problem with my internet service provider or my AEBS?
    thanks in advance

Sounds like they've done something to stop more than one computer sharing the internet connection. It's possible that they've done this to prevent unauthorised access (by neighbours, etc.), but it's also possible that they've done it to stop people sharing one account - an attempt to get more customers to pay extra?
I'd be tempted to look for a new ISP if they can't help.

  • Can I connect a external hard drive to the TC thru the Ethernet instead of the USB port so it will transfer data faster

I Want to connect the external hard drive so that I can transfer files faster then the USB 2.0. There is a thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter that you can buy  I I just want to know if the hard drive can be accessed thru the Ethernet line instead of the USB.  I think it will work faster than the USB.  But not sure

It won't work.. the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter doesn't work without drivers and the external thunderbolt drive is not now or ever a network drive.
Yes you can plug an ethernet type drive into the TC.. or into anywhere on the network.. it is after all another network drive..
eg Another TC is a network drive.
Seagate or WD make reasonably priced network drives. But they will not have the HFS+ format which the TC does.
You can buy a NAS from any of a whole range of companies.. A NAS is an ethernet connected drive.
See the reviews here to pick a NAS.

  • How can I connect a audio cassette player to my MBPro to play thru its speakers?

I would like to play my audio cassette  thru my MBPro.
    How can I connect it?
    Thanks for your help.
    Vernon

You are correct.  However, after asking my first question and received your reply, I replied with a second request because my audio cassette player went to the shop and I now wanted to know about a vcr connection.
And, I have tried your suggestion for the vcr but it did not work for me!! ;-(
I doubled checked my audio settings in System Preferences to make sure I was using the external mic connection and not the internal mic connection.  Also, I double checked my audio cables and "y" adapters to go from R-L audio output to mini Jack Y-cable and all are working just fine.
But I do not hear audio thru my MBPro. :-(
Do you have any other suggestion or question that might help?
I do appreciate your suggestions and especially your replying to my requests for help.
    Thanks again.
Oh yes, I need to head to bed since we are on CDT.  So, I will not be able to reply to you until Thursday!
