Can't connect to Access Point that is connected to the Internet (Snow Leopard 10.6.8)

Hi all,
I am normally not someone who posts on support forums since most of the problems can be solved be searching through piles of other questions, but this things has really got me pulling out my hair and I hope that maybe someone can help me with this super weird problem.
So, a few weeks back, my Mac Mini (kind of old, guessing 2007) stopped connecting to Wireless networks. Since all other devices in home (iPhone, MacBook Pro and a PC) are connecting just fine I thought it had to do with my settings. All it says is: "connection timeout".
The Mac Mini connects just fine when I plug in an ethernet cable, but that's a no go since I don't want cables laying around our living room that much.
I tried a lot of things suggested my other people like removing settings, PRAM reset, moving the AP closer, router settings etc etc. Of no avail. Even tried to fix it by reinstalling Snow Leopard, but that didn't do it either.
Though when I turned my MBP into an Access Point it could connect to that network just fine. That made me wonder if it's my router, but once I plug in an ethernet cable into my MBP to share Internet access it won't connect! Tried the same with my router and indeed, it connects just fine once it has no Internet connection.
Tried searching for people that had the same problem, but I couldn't find them. Can anybody here help?
TLDR; Mac won't connect to Wireless network that has an internet connection, but does when it hasn't.
Thanks!

Try disconnecting the router from the internet (WAN port) and plugging a PC directly into one of the LAN ports. After resetting, ignore the smartwifi login, click the two checkboxes, and login manually/directly with the "admin" password and reconfigure.
If you don't want to do all that just yet, try accessing the router from the public IP address assigned by your ISP. That might work

Below is some info i get about ports.
I tried to set DMZ on my main router to have full access to ported to access point upstair which is in the ip of 192.168.1.2 and the main router in the living room is the gateway router with the 192.168.1.1 ip.
I still cant see apple tv after i try the DMZ method.
    any suggestion ?
These network ports are used by Apple TV for communications on your network.
TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.
TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.
TCP port 80 is used for communicating with podcast servers.
TCP port 80 and 443 are used for basic and secure communications with the iTunes Store via the Internet.
TCP port 53 is used for regular DNS.
These are well-known ports used by Apple products, like iTunes. If you can use all the features of iTunes, these ports are likely already open on your firewall or NAT router. Note: These ports may also used by other services such as YouTube and Flickr.

When the Apple TV is paired with a remote, it means only that remote can control it, when it's not paired any remote can control it. You will need a remote for each of your devices.

  • Is there any way I can control which specific access point I connect (and stay connected) to from amongst a set of access points with the same SSID?

I'm working from a boat in a harbor in which the ISP has deployed numerous access points around the periphery.  All the access points share the same SSID and each is configured to use either channel 1, 6 or 11.   From my location, there are over a dozen of these access points "visible" (based on the the output of WiFi Scanner) with a range of RSSI and S/N values that vary over time.
The ISP has told me that the quality of my connection should be "perfectly fine" for any access point with an RSSI value better than -75, but I know from experience that my connection quality is miserable (i.e. < 50Kbps download) for almost all of these, including those with RSSI values better than -75.  There is at least one exception, however, which gives me on the order of 2Mbps download, which is "great" in this context.
I've tried using a more powerful USB antenna plugged into my MacBook Air (mid 2011), but as far as I can tell, it really doesn't make much difference.  Neither does my location within the boat.   The overriding factor seems to be which access point I happen to connect up to.
I should point out that the closest access points are about 75 yards away, with many of them being several hundred yards away or more.  I'm guessing that even though the signal strength of some of the distant access points is causing them to get "chosen" some times, the results are unacceptable due to the distance.
I'm hoping that I can determine, through experimentation, which access point(s) provide(s) acceptable performance and then configure my Mac to limit my connection to those points through whatever mechanism I need to use (e.g. channel, MAC id, etc.).

Establishing a wireless connection with a client computer is left to the access point for various reasons. One reason that your Mac may not connect to the strongest access point is that it may have reached a limit of the number of clients it can serve, leaving it unable to accept a connection with another. The limit may not be very large.
Suppose that happens, and your Mac establishes a connection with a more distant access point having a weaker signal. Then, suppose a client drops off the network. Doesn't this mean your Mac will switch to the stronger access point? Not necessarily. The throughput delivered to and from your Mac would have to drop below a threshold specified in the AP for it to drop the client, leaving your Mac free to connect with another one. The reason for this is to prevent rapid switching from one AP to another in an area in which two signals are of approximately equal quality. If that were to occur the frequent and repetitive handshaking between the two devices would slow throughput to zero.
In an environment in which several access points are broadcasting the same SSID, Apple provides no insight as to how it determines which access point to choose. This is the reason I suspect this "choice" is a function of the router, or access point. The connection originates with it, not the Mac.
Now, what would solve your dilemma would be to determine a way to control the access point with which your Mac connects, by specifying the access point's unique MAC address for example. In this happy circumstance, you could maintain an editable "whitelist" or "blacklist" of the harbor's access points and be able to choose which among them you prefer.
I do not believe OS X maintains such a record of MAC addresses though, only those of the routers it uses. If I am correct about that, such a solution is unlikely to exist. Don't let that discourage you from searching for one though... I would concentrate on something like "selecting access point by specific MAC address".
I did find this patent application though:
Roaming Network Stations Using A Mac Address Identifier To Select New Access Point
    Perhaps it's a start

  • Access Connections 5.20 -- Can't Specify Preferred Access Points in Location Profile

Aside from the crappy new harder-to-read graphic display of the network neighborhood -- reminiscent of Microsoft changing things to make them "cuter" while often less functional...   I have a real problem.
I am running an 802.11g wireless home network which includes both a router and a repeater.  This requires that both devices use the same SSID and encryption key.  The only way to distinguish the devices is by their MAC ID.
I want to create two Location Profiles to facilitate connection to one or the other of these two devices -- e.g., MyRouter and MyRepeater.  When setting up these two profiles, the one distringuishing feature would be that there is a different  Preferred Access Point MAC Address  set on the   Wireless Settings --  5. Advanced Configuration Settings  page.  However, this function is not enabled -- I can't enter any data on that page;  all I can do is change the  Power Save Mode  to one of the three defined options.
What is the matter here  --  how can I enter the data I want in each of these profiles.??
Also....,  if I did get to enter the data, would it work properly.??

    Hi,
in this case go to Global Settings and make sure, that the option "Allow wireless connection at Windows logon (requires system restart)" is selected. This will make sure, that there will be a connectino established while you start Windows.
And of course make sure, that you have the Location switching activated.
    This should do the trick.
Let me know, if this will work for you.
    Cheers

  • Connect Netgear access point to Home Hub?

    Before I switched to using a Home Hub 2, I was using a Netgear router/modem (DG834G).
And I also had a Netgear WPN802 access point connected to the DG834G router/modem (via ethernet cable), and this enabled me to connect to internet using wifi from another location in my house.  Just seemed to work.
But I can't seem to get this to work with the Home Hub.  When the access point is plugged in to the Home Hub, it doesn't seem to show up in the Devices part of the Home Hub, and I can't connect to the access point via its default IP address (192.168.0.231).  I can't see anything in the Home Hub to configure to make this work.  On the access point, the ethernet light is lit, which suggests that it can "see" something on the other end of the cable (and the light goes out when I unplug the other end from the Home Hub).
    Any hints?
    Thanks.

You will need to change the default IP address of the Netgear WPN802 so that it is in the same subnet as the home hub.
The full details on how to do this are here http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/wpn_802_ref_manual.pdf
Look at page 23 and change the IP address in the Basic settings.
You could change it to 192.168.1.231 if you wish. It would still not show on the home hub because it is manually assigned. But it should work fine.
I have an additional Belkin wireless access point on my hub, which uses the address 192.168.1.200, and that works fine.

  • E2500 as an additional access point will not connect

    Hello,
I have AT&T Uverse which provides Internet for my home.  The wireless capability of this router is pretty bad, I don't get good/reliable wireless reception upstairs in my office.  The solution was to buy a Cisco E2500 and add it as an access point upstairs.
I have the E2500 LAN port connected to the LAN port of my uverse router downstairs.  DHCP is turned off on the E2500.  I have my office PC wired into the E2500.  The home PC works fine, its getting DHCP from the uverse router downstairs and connects and good speeds.  The problem comes with my wireless devices trying to connect to the E2500.
I should mention that yesterday when i bought this, all worked fine.  This morning when I came into my office none of the wireless devices would connect to the E2500 at all.   But as soon as I remove the cable that connects the E2500 to the uverse router downstairs they will connect via wireless but of course not get an IP address since that is disabled.  No idea what is going on here.
I have factory reset the E2500 and uverse router several times and am getting no where.   Any ideas what could be causing the wireless devices to not connect at all?

I think you are having problems because you didn't give the E2500 an appropriate static IP address outside of your Uverse gateway's DHCP range.
A better option would be to reset the E2500 to factory defaults and then follow these bridge mode intructions:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/GetArticle.aspx?docid=28cee6a2fb0d4176a2210942d1d5836c_Setting_up_the_...
You should give the E2500 seperate (different names) SSID's and make sure your wireless channels are different on AT&T gateway and E2500.  Use 1, 6, or 11
The best option, however, would be to reset the E2500 to factory defaults and use the IP passthrough feature on your AT&T gateway.  If you use the IP passthrough feature on the  AT&T gateway, you would use internet connection type DHCP on the E2500 and it would be functioning as a NAT router.  The IP passthrough feature on you AT&T gateway allows your E2500 to receive a public IP address and you will be able to avoid the AT&T gateway's NAT.  So you will just be using the E2500's NAT.  You will need to change the MTU to manual and you can ask AT&T what the appropriate mtu is for Uverse.

Your AP-manager and management interfaces is mapped to port 1:
    ap-manager                       1    80       10.41.80.2      Static  Yes    No
only APs connected to port 1 will work.
You need to either use a switch and keep port 1 connected to it while APs join through the switch or you need to create a new ap-manager interface. not even sure if you can map it to the same port or different port! not even sure about the management interface!! it is mapped to port 1 and should be reachable anyway. it is a mess!!! have you read the best practice document that I put the link for earlier?
So you need eventually a switch to fix your issue. direclty connected APs are not recommended.
I am still not knowing how Cisco provided such swtich that is supposed to handle direclty connected Aps while it does not provide a smooth way to do so.
Use a switch and everything supposed to be fine.

  • Connection via access point to my pc via Bluetooth

Pls, kindly guide me on how to connect my laptop to the network access point on the new c2-00 nokia via bluetooth. I have been trying, but couldnt get through. Thank you John46.  You have clarified the settings that I need to plug in to the access point.  Just to confirm re the channel I need to set the channel on the access point to be different from the BT Hub.
    Your assistance is much appreciated
    I think you meant me.
Make sure that the home hub is set to a fixed wireless channel, not smart wireless. Try 1,6 or 11.
    See http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094/kw/change%20wireless%20channel/c/346,407,410
Set the additional access point to one of the other two frequencies. So if the hub is on 6, put the access point on 1 or 11.
This gives plenty of separation without any overlap.
If you read my document, you will see that I recommend setting the IP of the access point to 192.168.1.15, to avoid the DHCP range of the home hub.

  • Connecting European Access Point to US Controller

I have a 5508 controller and about 30 AIR-CAP3502I-A-K9 access points across 30 offices in the USA.  We have a new UK office and purchased an AP locally to avoid shipping from the US, the UK AP is an AIR-CAP3502I-E-K9.  When I try to add the UK country code to the controller it tells me I have to disable 802.11A and B wireless networks.  I obviously don't want to do that.  Is there a way to connect a -E AP to an American controller??
    Thank you,
    John

Is there a way to connect a -E AP to an American controller??
No there is none.   You have two options:
Get another controller where you allow APs with the same Regulatory Domain to join; or
Convert and operate the APs in autonomous.
The reason behind this madness is because the wifi Regulatory Domain for Europe and US are totally different.  In order to comply, Cisco's WLC will only allow COMMON factors to be enabled.
Take my case for example.  I have a few "-A" APs that were delivered incorrectly when I should be using "-N".  So this means that all my "-A" APs have 802.11a radios disabled.

    1) only wireless g, 802.11b does not seem to have this problem, psp probably is not supported by most 802.11b cards so its probably disabled in that mode.
    I'll start off.
imac dou core. ( 1 week old)
dlink 2100ap , wireless g , does not work, slow not paifully slow internet access, very degraded video/audio streaming over local network.

    I'm afraid 11b is affected.
    I have a D-Link DSL 604+ router, which is 11b only.
Wireless is very slow, I noticed it right away. I get the sawtooth readout in activity monitor's network section.
Also, after putting the iMac to sleep it cannot find my wifi network upon waking. I have to restart the system before it'll connect to my wifi network again.
