Can't connect to AIM - Login too often in short period of time

Just recently my iChat AIM connection has been giving me this error message
"Could not connect to AIM
You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again."
The first message came up at 7.25pm. I waiting until 7.30pm. Same message.
I waited until 7.40pm. Same message
I quit iChat and tried again at 7.45pm. Same message.
I've restarted twice. Same message.
I've "reset iChat" by moving the .plists for ichat. Same message.
What should i do? You'd think 10 minutes would be ok to try logging in again.

Hi
He might of done this.
Try this log on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190
Go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443.
Log back in again.

  • You have attempted to login too often...

We recently got Wi-fi set up in our house, since then ichat will not work. I will log in and it shows that none of my friends are online, then after about 2 or 3 minutes Ichat will log out then log in rapidly on its own. Then I get a message that says. "You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. wait a few minutes before trying to login again." Then when I try to login again the same thing happens. can anyone help?

    Hi,
It can be for a Number of reasons.
One speculation is that the AIM servers get busy with AIM and ICQ members and now BEBO all using the same port. (not to mention all the apps that can log into AIM and the AOL ISP Browser that can IM)
As iChat uses port 5190 on the TCP Protocol to Login but uses port 5190 on UDP to Send Files, Pics in Chats & Direct Messaging and certain Buddy List updates Buddies coming and going) - some routers and modems that route do not seem to like this double use of port 5190 (it certainly effects Zyxels devices).
Sort of related, with Devices set up to Port Forward, a port can normally only be forwarded once (to one IP), so this seems, to some that specify Protocols as well, as doing it twice.
Apple have an Article that I don't have link for about Some Netgears needing to change this port.
More generally though port 443 is open in most routers and routing modems as it is under the threshold of 1024.
All ports below this are open.
It allows Web Browsers and Mail apps to use the ports they use without any set up.
Several routers can be linked together without any input and these apps will still work.
Port 443 is used by secure Web Sites such as Banks and the like and the Apple Discussions Login Page.
It is also used by mail apps to access some mail servers.
Therefore dropping the login port in iChat to this port is likely to find it is open in any router.
Pre Leopard the above also used to apply to the way the Mac Firewall worked as ports had to be specifically listed. This means if a ports is open for one app other apps can "Piggy Back" that usage.
In Leopard the App is "Certificated" and even if it allows a Port it will not be open for another app that is nt allowed to use the firewall.
    Hope this helps.

  • I can't log in to ichat due to the fact that I can't connect with aim.

i can't log in to ichat due to the fact that I can't connect with aim. everytime i try to log in it gives an ichat connection alert saying that the connection to the host was unexpectedly lost. the weird thing is that it let me sign on the first time then all of the sudden it just clicked off, giving me that message.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I'm having the same problem.
I know this is an Apple forum, but is there anywhere that we can get info about AOL's servers (i.e., which regions are having trouble, etc)? I'm in France, and AOL seems to shut down at about 6:00pm every day. This is very frustrating, since the people i'm trying to talk to are in the US.
Edit: the firewall port solution doesn't work, either. It's AOL.

After 1 or 2 reboot system I managed was enter my MacBook Pro my AppleID and it is connected I managed so to have the flow of "Stream Photo" from my iPhone 4 S to my iPad 2 on the MacBook. But incomprehensible how the function "find my Mac" not recognize the MacBook Pro in "iCloud.com" or App in the iPhone 4 / iPad 2. Thus I do little "see the iMac, iPhone 4 and my iPad 2" and not the Macbook Pro !?!

  • A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time

Prior to the Increase Capacity for Outbound Network Calls update, my Azure websites running in
Standard mode experienced occasional connection attempt failed errors. Since this update the errors stopped but starting on 12/30/14, these errors started up again on both
    South Central and East regions:
"A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond [IP]:80"
It occurs when attempting to consume an external web service over HTTP. This issue is not reproducible on our local environments nor did it occur with our previous shared hosting provider.
On Azure, the same web service call can result in this error or will return a response successfully.
There doesn't appear to be any pattern as to why the same call would work one time but not another.
How can this be resolved again? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
Please have a look at this article:

it gives us several ways to solve this issue, hope this helps.

If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact Apple ID Support, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
You will need to show patience with the procedure and be prepared to demonstrate without question that the account belongs to you. Don’t expect access to be restored immediately and if you aren’t the owner of the Apple ID registered to the device the account won’t be reset.

Have you tried a hard reset yet?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, try a restore from an earlier backup in iTunes.

  • Suddenly can't connect to AIM/iChat.

I'm sorry if this has been asked many times, and answered many times but I can't find an answer to my problem. Please help.
Recently I am not able to connect to iChat while I am at home. When I'm at school and using their wifi, iChat works fine. After awhile, it won't connect a box comes up and says, "Could not connect to AIM. The conncection to the host was unexpectedly lost." I can still go to websites and my .mac mail seems to be working fine, it's just the iChat that isn't working. I've checked for updates and it says I have all the updates that are available. To my knowledge, I didn't change any numbers, addresses, connections or whatever to cause iChat to stop working. I don't know what it could be, or what changed all of a sudden that it stopped working.
    Thanks!

    Hey,
I'm having the same problem, too. Only, for some reason, my iChat stopped working in my dorm room at school. It was working yesterday in my dorm room and worked when I was in class, however, it stopped connecting when I tried to sign on from the dorm. I tried changing my port from 5190 to 443 and nothing happened. It either says "connecting" for a very long time or it says "The connection to the host was unexpectedly lost." I'm not sure why there is such a sudden change, however, I really need to get on iChat. I also tried using Yahoo Messenger and the same thing happened also. Any more ideas besides attempting to change the port??
    Thanks =)

  • Messages.app can't connect to AIM/GChat/FB Jabber, AIM.app works

Since updating to 10.8 on my 2011 MBP, I've had a ton of trouble with Messages.app .  It seems to work consistently from home on a Frontier DSL behind a 2003-era Airport Extreme.  However on my business network (Comcast, behind Sonicwall TZ170 & Windows 2003 SBS server), connection is inconsistent at best.  This morning, I'd left my MBP logged in & sleeping from home, and plugged in at work.  Messages remained logged in to AIM, GChat & Facebook via Jabber.  However, after a restart, those services will not reconnect.
Messages lost the connection to the AIM account “xxxx”. A network error occurred.
Messages lost the connection to the Google Talk account “xxxxx”. A network error occurred.
Following other tips on here, I've dumped a variety of .plist files, removed my accounts & added again, set preferences to use separate Buddy lists, and checked/unchecked/checked again the use SSL options.  This started to feel like a DNS issue.  But, I'm running XPsp3 via VirtualBox, and that computer's AIM & Yahoo connections on Trillian work just fine.  Then I downloaded & installed the official AIM.app, and it also connected without issue.  I can ping each of those hosts from the command line.
Before upgrading, I had been using iChat on 10.4/10.5/10.6/10.7 with those account without problem. Strangely, Bonjour rarely connected under those configurations but does now every time.  iMessages work properly.

    Hi,
The default GoogleTalk login is on port 5223 as it is a Jabber SSL login.
However it can be made to work on port 443 (with SSL Left On)
Log out of the GoogleTalk account in the Messages > Preferences > Accounts > Google option > Account info tab
In the Server Setting Tab you can now change the port to 443
This is likely to help where the Connection to the Internet only allows default ports.
The AIM login in Messages is now on port 443 (regular posters have been saying use this since iChat 3)
It also changed the server name from iChat 6 to api.oscar.aol.com
Adium still uses the older login.oscar.aol.com In earlier versions of iChat this gained a leading "s" when using SSL
By default most domestic routers will have ports up to 1024 open (allows Web Browsing Secures logins and Mail plus FTP) - there are 65355 ports in all and some of the ports used for Logins in Messages and Video or Audio chatting are above this 1024 threshold.
I am a little surprised that the computer stayed logged in as you changed networks.
If not using SSL it is likely the AIM one was dropped and Automatically reconnected.
If the app is supposed to start when the computer does then there could be issues if the network is not established by the time Messages has finished Launching.
The fact the Bonjour Account is connecting means it is not the DNS issue.
Bonjour relies on mDSN (multicast DNS) and this in turn need DNS to be working.

  • Suddenly can't connect to AIM :(((

After months and months of successful AV chats, I'm suddenly completely unable to connect to AIM. The message I get is "Could not connect to AIM. Auth: ResvLinkError".
I did a search and tried changing from port 5190 to port 443 in the prefs, but that didn't help at all.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi Sandra,
Looks like a AIM Server Synch problem.
As the AIM servers send you Buddy list back to you on port 5190 on the UDP protocol then sometimes changing the log in port can help. (particularly if your modem port forwards the protocols as well as the ports - as this seems to be regarded by some devices as the same as forwarding it twice to different computers).
However as people start holidays and contacting family the usage of AIM goes up and hey presto it shows the strain now and then.

  • IChat can't connect to AIM network

My iChat was working fine with my AIM account until this evening -- now, it reports that it can't connect at all.
What could have happened to my Macbook since this morning?
How can I figure out how to fix it?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not sure why your iChat use to work and now it doesn't. Have you made any adjustments to your Mac firewall? Did you make any adjustments to your router?
Or have you made any other system wide changes since the last time you were successful in logging in.
Lastly, you may want to change your port to 443 iChat>Preferences>Accounts>Server Settings
Lastly, it may have just been a problem with the AIM servers. Are you up and running again?
