Can't connect to Airport Extreme – can't even see network

I’m staying at a friend’s house in UK – mac’s everywhere. He has a new Airport Extreme - my Powerbook cannot see the network. All the other macs can see it. I think my wireless card is okay - I can sometimes see other networks in the building.
Any ideas? I've tried selecting "other..." and manually entering the network name & pwd - no luck. I've also added netwrok name to preferred list.
PS. When I open AirPort Admin Utility, I can see the basestation (connected via Ethernet). I click ‘configure’, enter the password and get the following error:
Configuration Error
This version of AirPort Admin Utility does not support this base station. You can’t update the software for this basestation, but you may be able to make configuration changes to it. Please go to www/apple.com/support to locate a newer version of the AirPort Admin Utility.
I click the blue ‘continue’ button – it doesn’t work, nothing happens.
I can see the configuration pages below the error message – the mode is set to 802.11b only – it won’t allow me to make changes. Could that be the problem?
1.67Ghz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Wireless Card Firmware: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18)

Don't use the AirPort Admin Utility to try and connect to and configure the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station. The new base station can only be configured with the new AirPort Utility that is included on the CD that shipped with it.
Why your PowerBook can't see his wireless network is difficult to diagnose from here but isn't exactly unique as others have had problems as for various reasons.
I recommend doing a search within this forum to see some of the solutions other people have found for the problem you are having.

  • VPN--Can't connect with airport extreme (can with lynksys)

I have an airport WDS at home. My employer has set me up with a VPN. I can't connect via my airport but if I walk over to my neighbor's house, I can (he has a lynksys router). I've been working with my IT rep, looking at ports, firewalls, etc. We've added 4 different port addresses to the port mapping tab on my airport base station, still nothing. Does anyone have thoughts or answers?

  • HT4259 i connected two airport extremes by extending a wifi network.  wifi seems weak...help

i connected two airport extremes by extending a wifi network.  all my lights are green, and airport utility confirms connections are excellent.  but the extended base station hasn't improved my wifi range in the area i set it up in.

If you have a Mac laptop handy, run the test that I have outlined below to find out if the remote AirPort Extreme is really extending the signal at all.
Here, I assume that both of your AirPort Extremes are the newer "square" versions....not the older "round" version.
Locate your Mac laptop close to the "main" AirPort Extreme
Hold down the option key on the Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen
Look for the BSSID and jot down the last few characters
The BSSID is the AirPort ID of the AirPort Extreme
Now, move the laptop close the "remote" AirPort Extreme and perform the same test
If you see the same BSSID as the "main" AirPort Extreme, your Mac is picking up from the main AirPort...and the remote AirPort is not configured correctly to extend.
If you see a different BSSID near the remote AirPort, that indicates that the Mac is picking up a signal from the remote AirPort....which is exending the signal correctly.

  • Can I connect my Airport Extreme Time Capsule via ethernet to another router (non-Apple)?

I've been trying to figure this out for a few hours and have gotten nowhere. I have an Archer C7 AC1750 router set up in my office, connected to my Zoom 5341 DOCSIS 3.0 Modem; this has been my main router and has worked fine. I have moved some things around and now have my PS3 and PS4 in my master bedroom but can no longer hook them up via ethernet to the Archer C7. I have run ethernet through the attic into the master bedroom and want to use my Airport Extreme Time Capsule as a way to hook up the consoles via ethernet. If I can use the Airport Extreme to extend my wireless network back to the bedrooms that is even better, although that is an afterthought.
I am not sure what the settings need to be to make this happen. I have searched and tried a number of things but have not found a working solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please start over with a default reset on the Time Capsule. This will not affect any of the stored data that you might have on the drive. You can use the same device name and password that you used before if you wish.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes. Then hold in the reset button firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Make sure that the Ethernet cable connection from the Archer router connects to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
    Open up AirPort Utility
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on Time Capsule xxxxxx
AirPort Utility will suggest a setup, which you want to ignore
Instead, click the Other Options button
Select the Create a new wireless network setting and click Next
In the Network Name box, enter the exact name of your Archer wireless network
In the Base Station name box, enter a name that you want to use for the Time Capsule device
Uncheck the box to use a single password
In the Network Password box, enter the password for the Archer wireless network
    Verify on the next line
In the Base Staion box, enter a password that you want to use as a device password for the Time Capsule
    Verify on the next line
Click Next and wait while the AirPort Utility creates a network
Ignore the step about unplugging the modem and click Next
Do not enable the Guest Network option and click Next
Wait while the network is being set up. When you see the message that the wireless network is available, click Done
The Time Capsule will now appear in AirPort Utility with a blinking amber light
Click on the Time Capsule icon, and then click on Edit in the next small box that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the window
Change the setting for Router Mode from DHCP and NAT to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and click Continue
Wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart and you should have a green light
It would be an excellent idea to power off both the Time Capsule and Archer router now, wait a minute, then start the Archer router and let it run a minute. Then, start the Time Capsule up and give it a minute
You should be all set. The Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are now operable and the wireless network has been extended using AES encryption.

  • Can't connect to airport extreme after installing 10.10

After installing OS X 10.10 WiFi connection with Airport Extreme drops out a couple of different ways.  Log in fails, Says Airport extreme is not there (2ft away), drops data connection with all WiFi bars showing.
Drops data connection mid data transfer.  Then after sever power recycles of the MacBook Pro connection comes back.
Light on Airport Extreme is blinking.  This iMac is also connected passing data via the same Airport extreme while the MacBook Pro is having the above experiences.
Anyone experiencing WiFi issues since 10.10?

  • How many computers can be connected to Airport Extreme?

Hi, we have some kind of medium sized network at home: currently we have about 15-20 devices (Macs, PCs and network printers) that are all connected together by a D-Link DI624+ router. However, for time to time that way too much for the router so we're continously looking forward for a new solution that can handle this amount of devices but still is cheap.
Do you have experience with Airport Extreme as a router for 15 to 20 computers/network devices getting Internet from and being controlled by it? Does it work without problems and is it reliable?
Out current router often crashes, needs restarts and sometimes looses the whole configuration when more computers are active at the same time.
Thanks a lot for you ideas!

Right from Apple's main page for the Airport Extreme.
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/
"With the new AirPort Extreme Base Station, you and up to 50 of your friends, colleagues, or family members can enjoy a robust wireless network offering up to five times the performance and up to twice the range of networks created with the earlier 802.11g standard.2"

  • Win XP SP3 Can't Connect to Airport Extreme

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro and iMac running Windows XP SP3 to my Airport Extreme and I am not having any luck. The computers connect fine under OS X. Airport set with WPA2 Personal. On Windows I select WPA2 (not WPA2-PSK) and AES. I type in my password when I try to connect. I do not get an error but it is continually looking for the IP Address. I also downloaded the Windows Utility for Airport and can make any changes I want. Therefore, I know I can connect to it.
Any ideas on how to set this up?

Turns out I had the wrong password. Windows does not tell you this, so I had no way of knowing.

  • Windows XP laptop can't connect to Airport Extreme used to extend network.

Have a time capsule for main wireless. PC works fine connecting to it. Have added Airport Extreme to extend network. The mac sees it fine and the PC can connect to it via airport utility but won't connect as wireless and the internet. Running WPA2. Have the latest firmware in each. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for clarifying. If you don't mind, let's double-check your extended-network setup configuration:
o Open AirPort Utility and select the Time Capsule (TC), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
o Verify that both “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu and “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox are selected.
o Next, select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Verify that “Extend a wireless network” has been selected from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. Also verify that the correct Network Name is shown for the network you want the AEBSn to extend.
    Do your settings match these?

  • Windows XP client can't connect to AirPort Extreme AP with WEP enabled.

    Hello,
I have big problem with Mac Mini AirPort Extreme working in AP mode with Windows XP client.
Some time ago, AP refuse to connect Windows XP clients (notebook) when WEP is enabled (40/128 bit, same problem), while before that, everything work perfect.
On other hand, iPhone can connect using WEP without an problem.
When WEP is turned off, XP client can connect but this is not acceptable for me.
I must notice that friend of mine have absolute SAME PROBLEM which rise almost at same time few months ago. They have Mac Mini and XP notebook (different then mine) which can not connect with WEP turned on, while his iPod touch work!
I guess that this happened due AirPort Firmware upgrade included in some of Apple software update.
Does anybody have similar problem or know the solution?
    My AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
    Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.16.2
    Current Wireless Network: Mac mini
    Wireless Channel: 11
    Tnx in advance.

mikikg, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but this is a known issue.
The only solution is to get a real wireless router instead of using your Mac mini as a base station.

  • Server app can't connect to AirPort Extreme

I just got a Mac Mini, 2010 and did the upgrade to Mountain lion and then included Mountain lion server. Before I going to further I need to preface by saying that server administration is something new for me so be kind please! Long story short every time I try to Set up airport extreme administration from the server app it tells me that my password is incorrect. I know the password is correct because I'm able to login from my iPad and from my MacBook Pro also to verify that the password is correct. In addition to that, I even changed the password and then entered the   new password in the server app set up and it still won't connect and it tells me I have the wrong password. To be clear I know that this is the base station password I need not the network password. I'm not sure if I need to reset my airport extreme or if I need to reload the software on the computer if something is wrong somewhere in the software that's preventing this connection from happening does anybody else know from their experience what the problem might be and how I can fix it? Everything I read up to this point has told me how great it is that I have the AirPort Extreme because it makes it easier to configure ports for VPN and filesharing etc. etc. so you can imagine how frustrated I am that it's not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance.

Had the same issue today randomly and found a thread stating that "Apple knew about this and was working on it". I solved it trying all of theses steps each on their own and it did not work BUT did work in this order for me.
-On the server shut down airport utility and server app if you have them open.
-Go to /Library/Server/ move Network folder to trash and empty
-Open the keychain and search for airport, erase all that come up
-Command line steps (so in Terminal)
    sudo rm /var/db/.ServerSetupDone
    sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "delete :managedIGD" /Library/Server/Network/Config/autoportmap.plist
    sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "delete :lastIGD" /Library/Server/Network/Config/autoportmap.plist
(at this point it should say it can't find 'lastIGD")
    reboot
-open airport utility and enter password for airport app leave open
-open server app, run through config then enter password for airport
This was basically all of the steps I found on various forums and seems to be either a keychain permissions issue or some funky server app issue.

  • Vaio Can't Connect to Airport Extreme

I'm not able to connect to my 3-year-old Airport Extreme base station from a newer Sony Vaio laptop with an Intel wireless modem. I administer the base station from a G5 iMac and use 128 bit WEP encryption. Wireless connections from Mac's as well as from a 6 year old Vaio with SMC wireless card work quite well. Not so for the year-old Vaio -- which otherwise works well at unencrypted public access points. I downloaded/installed an updated modem driver from Sony, but that did not cure the problem. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

  • Can i connect an airport extreme (us version) with a new airport express (euro version) ?

Hi, I lived in the USA for a while and moved back to Europe.
I have an airport extreme (US purchased) which i would like to link with a new airport express (EURO purchased) in order to extent my network.
    Is this possible ?
I have multiple problems doing so, which leads me to believe the US and EURO product might not be compatible.
Thx for your kind assistance, G.

Connecting routers wirelessly to extend a wireless network is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Although AirPorts can extend other AirPorts in a WDS, they only work with a few non-AirPort ones...like some Linksys models.
Here are a few articles on the subject:
    - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607414
    - http://rgbdream.com/?p=44
Another option, although maybe not as practical in your circumstance, is to connect the AirPort base directly using an Ethernet cable to the Linksys. Then setting up the AirPort as a bridge.

  • Can't connect to airport extreme guestnetwork

I cannot connect to my airport extreme guest network

Unfortunately, your post provides virtually no information for us to go on. If you could provide some more details, we can begin to troubleshoot your issue.
What model number of AirPort Extreme do you have?
What operating system are you using on your computer?
What is the make and model number of your modem?
Was the guest network working before, and now does not?
Can you "see" the guest network and not connect.....or.....can you not "see" the guest network at all?
What troubleshooting steps have you tried? What were the results?

  • Can't connect 2nd airport extreme wirelessly to airport extreme base station

I have an Airport Extreme base station connected to my cable modem.  I have a 2nd Extreme I am trying to connect wirelessly to the base station to extend my network.  The Airport Utility does not see the second AE.  Also the status light on the 2nd AE is flashing amber.  I have tried hard resets and the Utility will not find it.

    OK, thanks for the information.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your issue or not, but according to Apple, a Windows PC cannot be used to configure the newer models of the AirPort Extreme correctly. Here is what the Specifications page for the new AirPort Extreme indicates:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
    http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/specs/
I don't have a PC here to test out the setup.
We can try to configure the 2nd Extreme to extend the 1st, but if that is not successful....and you used the PC to configure the 1st Extreme....it may be necessary to start all over again and reconfigure the 1st Extreme using recommended software before the 2nd Extreme can be set up.
For now, temporarily move the 2nd Extreme to the same room or close proximity to the 1st Extreme.  Power up the 2nd Extreme for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the device for 8-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the 2nd Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
On the home screen for an iPhone or iPad.....
    Tap Settings
    Tap Wi-Fi
Look for an option to Setup a New AirPort Base Station
Tap on AirPort Exteme just below that option
The utility will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then suggest that the 2nd Extreme will be configure to extend the 1st Extreme. Enter a device name that you want to use for the 2nd Exteme and tap Next.
The utility will configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
Now move the 2nd Exteme approximately half way between the 1st Extreme and the area that needs more wireless signal coverage and try things out. Extending this way using wireless will usually result in a loss of about half of the potential network speed, but that is not avoidable with a wireless method.
