Can't connect to colleagues' Windows machines

Since upgrading to Leopard I haven't been able to get files from my colleagues' Windows machines. I can find their machines in the Finder window and connect as a guest, but only the first couple levels of folders are there (For example: I need files that are two folders down. The first folder is there and contains the second, but when I open the second it is empty!). I have had this problem with every computer I have tried to connect to, and that includes one running Ubuntu.
Using Finder: Connect to Server doesn't help, and the "Connect As" button more often than not doesn't seem to do anything. It seems to take quite a few clicks before I'm prompted for login info.
I can connect to these computers from another machine running Tiger without any trouble, and I know the files are there because I can find them if I use SSH.

I installed 10.5.2 last night and it seems to have resolved some of the Windows problems, but the Ubuntu computer is still causing trouble. It sees the folder I need to get into as an alias, and says it cannot be opened because the original item cannot be found. If I use SSH it sees it as a folder, same with Tiger.

  • I can't connect to my Windows machine from my G4 Others Can

    Hi,
I'm new here, I'm sure this has come up before, but I couldn't find a solution in the forum.
I'm trying to connect a G4 running 10.3.8 to a Windows 7 PC unsuccessfully. However I can connect to it and share with both an Intell based PowerMac and a newer Power PC G5.
The G4 sees the other computer on the network, but when I enter its username and password I get the message,
"The alias named xxxxxxxxxxx could not be opened because the original item can not be found."
Also, the error message on the console reads,
"mount smbfs: unable to list resources: syserr=function not implimented
I can however successfully ping it through the terminal.
I've pretty much run out of ideas, so if anyone would be able to help I'd really appriciate it.
    Thank you,
    Eric

    Hmmm, link works here...
Archived -  Mac OS X 10.4: Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Windows server
This article has been archived and is no longer updated by Apple.
    Symptoms
Mac OS X 10.4: Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Samba or Windows server
After upgrading from Mac OS X 10.3.x to Mac OS X 10.4, you may get an error message when you try to connect to a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. A Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server includes servers operating on Microsoft Windows and other operating systems that use Samba for SMB/CIFS services.
If the connection is unsuccessful, the following error message may appear:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in smb://........ could not be read or written. (Error code -36).
If you check the Console (/Applications/Utilities/), you will also see this error message:
    mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed
    Resolution
This error can occur if your Mac OS X 10.4 client is trying to connect to a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server that only supports plain text passwords. If you do not see the above message in the Console, you are not experiencing this issue and should try normal troubleshooting
Unlike Mac OS X 10.3, the Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client by default only supports encrypted passwords. Most modern Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers use encrypted passwords by default, while some Samba servers might have to be reconfigured.
You should consider contacting the owner or system administrator of the Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server to which you are trying to connect and encourage them to disable plain text passwords and start using encrypted ones. If the server cannot be reconfigured to support encrypted passwords, you can configure Mac OS X 10.4 SMB/CIFS client to send plain text passwords.
Warning: If you configure your computer to allow connections to Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers using plain text passwords, when you attempt to make any connection to such a Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server, your password will be sent "in the clear". This means that it is possible for someone who is monitoring your connection to see your password. This could lead to someone compromising the Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server. We strongly recommend that you configure your Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers to exclusively use encrypted passwords.
Follow the steps below to configure your computer to use plain text passwords to make SMB/CIFS connections when the specified Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) server does not support encrypted passwords. (You must be an administrator to do these steps.)
Make sure that you are not currently connected to any Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers and that you do not have any Samba or Windows-related error messages open.
    Open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
At the prompt, type: sudo pico /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
Enter your password when prompted, then press Return again.
You should see an empty file and a "New File" notice at the bottom of the pico window. If you do not see the "New File" notice, this file already exists.
Enter the following into the file so that it appears as follows:
    [default]
    minauth=none
Save the file (press Control-O), press Return, then exit pico (Control-X).
    Type: sudo chmod a+r /etc/nsmb.conf
    Press Return.
    Restart your computer.

Also, does the PC connect to that Mac if you enable Windoes Sharing on the Mac?

The X-server should work, when I export DISPLY to a remote X-server.
How about ImageServlet.. It seems that the ImageServlet has more advantages than X-server or XVBF
I tried to configure OC4J using ImageServlet follow UIX developer's guide. But I was not able to force OC4J to use ImageSevlet. But OC4J is stll try to find X-sever..

I think it is somewhere related to DISPLAY parameter of the Solaris machine and the xhost file???
    Any inputs???

You need to connect to a X-Server, since you are using java.awt.Font
The Font implementation needs a graphical subsystem (it has something to do with Frame.addNotify, ...)
I've heard about a simple (FrameBuffer?) XServer implementation without a graphical output. Perhaps you may find some more information in the FAQ section for JAVA/JSP

If you logon to the console with a user, only that user is permitted to "send" the display to the screen. If you do an "su - ora<sid>" that user must be enable to do so too.
    - logon as root
    - open a terminal windows (a new one)
    - execute "xhost +"
    - use another terminal window
    - execute "su - ora<sid>"
    - execute "setenv DISPLAY <ip>:<port>"
    - then execute ./RUNINSTALLER in the SAP subdirectory of Disk1 (NOT runInstaller)

My imac runing lion 10.7 can not connect to my Windows 7 pc on my network. When i select connect to server, I can see the windows computer but when i try to connect, i get the error message:
Connection failed.  There was a problem connecting to the server.  Ther server may not exist or is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection and try again.
I entered smb:// computer name and I tried smb://IP address.  Neither would connect.
I am able to connect to the imac from my Window PC and access files but not I can not connect my iMac to the Windows PC.
I am trying to connect the two computers so that I can use a printer that is attached to the Windows 7 pc.
When I first downl;oaded and installed Lion, I was able to connect to the Windows 7 pc and use the printer attached to it.
I have tried 5 or 6 different suggestions to no avail.  Both computers are up to date and the printer drivers are up to date.
Please let me know if there is a solution.

Be sure to make the network Workgroup name on the Mac and Windows boxes the same.
On the Mac it is in System Preferences, Network Preferences, Advanced, WINS
On the Windows machine check in the Control Panel where you will also find the Computer name listed. I don't have my PC running right now, so I am not sure exactly where it is. Only assign a Workgroup, do not create a Domain.
You can also search in Windows for Workgroup.
I can link/network Lion to Win7 and vice versa without any problems.

    Dear All,
    Greetings!!
We had successfully installed ECC6.0 EHP7 with HANA Database on SUSE 11 SP3. Now we are in the process of upgrading the components in the ECC via SUM. When we try to start the upgrade via SUM using <SID>ADM userid in the Linux Machine, we are getting an JAVA Error like "Can't connect to X11 Windows Server". Please find the complete error log in the attached screenshot (SUM.pmg).
But when we try the same with the root userid, we can able to see the SUM GUI Opening Screen.
Please help us with suggestions or solutions at the earliest.
    Regards,

    Hello Ella,
Please follow the SUM upgrade guide for starting the SUM tool.
Start the SL controller on primary application server with command :
    ./STARTUP
After this, you can access the GUI from the browser :
    http://<host>:4239/
Problem you described, seems to be related to variables.
Please set the variable DISPLAY for the SIDADM user.
    Thanks.

  • Can't connect to X11 window server... in X!

I'm trying to help someone who is on a machine with a fresh install of RHEL4u5. He launches the installer for 10.2, and gets
Can't connect to X11 window server using ':0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable
But he's on the console, at runlevel 5, in X! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

The reason in this case could be that user which had opened X session is different user as is used in terminal to launch OUI (probably "su - oracle" was used).
So before you execute "su - oracle" try execute "xhost +" command.
Then as oracle ensure that DISPLAY is set to ":0.0".
    Example:
    [root@comp tmp]# xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
    [root@comp tmp]# su - oracle
    [oracle@comp tmp]$ env|grep DISPLAY
DISPLAY=:0.0Or start X session (logon to GNOME/KDE (or other WM)) as Oracle owner ("oracle" user usually).

Hi, How do I export HDR photos made on a macpro with photoshop cs5 onto a flashdrive so they can be imported correctly into a windows machine that doesn't have photoshop installed on it?  Already exported to a HP flashdrive but they do not even show up on a windows machine. Need that capabillity since this is for commercial printing.  My wife's mac laptop only shows 3/4 of the picture the rest is grayed out.  Adobe support claims it is a Apple problem.  Love the finger pointing and hold me blameless atitude on their part.  Told them creating a picture should be like gas that can be used in anybody's car, just not their Adobe equipped ferrari.  Do I need to convert the file struture so it can be read by the window machine? How would I do that ?  Any comments appreciated. Doug

I certainly wouldn't expect to read native PS CS5 files with all features intact and supported on a machine that doesn't have CS5 installed. Try saving the files as flattened (no layers) TIFFs before moving them to the flash drive and trying to open them on the Windoze box.

  • Can I connect to a windows server to veiw and download files to mark and return to server??

Can I connect to a windows server to download and view files and return to server???

I use the FTP on the Go Pro app to do just this. I don't know what kind of servers I connect to though but I've not had any problems connecting.
I connect and select a file. I update the file, then tap save. The file is uploaded back to the server and the original version is ved just in case I might need it.

  • Can't connect to X11 window server using ':0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable.

    Hi,
I'm running WebLogic 5.1 sp10 on a Solaris box and I get the
    following error:
    java.rmi.RemoteException: java.lang.InternalError: Can't connect to
X11 window server using ':0.0' as the value of the DISPLAY variable.
         at sun.awt.X11GraphicsEnvironment.initDisplay(Native Method)

caused by the following code fragment:
    Font f = new Font(fontName, fontStyle, fontHeight);
    FontMetrics fm = (new Panel()).getFontMetrics(f);
Have I just forgotten to set an environment variable? I would prefer
not to install bulky pieces of software, but if that's what it takes
to get over this error, so be it.
    Thanks, Dave A.

A Java AWT, X11 problem posted in the weblogic ejb newsgroup. I haven't been in here for long, but
that has to be a first.
If you have the DISPLAY env variable set to :0.0, you have to be at the console on a Solaris box
running the XServer. 'xdm' I think is the code that has to be running. Also, I think the format is
<hostname:0.0> or better <hostname:0> unless you are on a multi-headed workstation. Something like:
    export DISPLAY=hostname:0
where hostname is the name of the host running an XServer and the .xhosts file allows access to the
    XServer from the display client.
Apparently, you are not at the console?
Anyway, I don't think there is a newsgroup here that I could even recommend to cross-post this to as
it is not a WebLogic question. I think I would try the Discussion Forums at http://java.sun.com.
