Can't connect to existing back-up file

I am having trouble performing a Time Machine back up of my Macbook Pro to my time capsule.  I haven't done a back-up in a while, as I usually only do a back-up when I have new photos on my hard-drive. I use the native drive on the Time Machine for my back-ups.
I recently installed an external hard drive off of the time capsule to perform back-ups of a different Macbook as I didn't have enough space on the time capsule for the second computer.
I am now trying to do a back-up, but Time Machine won't find the .sparsebundle on the time capsule file.  The only file that is on the time capsule is my existing .sparsebundle, but it keeps saying that there is not enough space on the drive for a back-up.  What should I do?
Help!

Thanks for the tips. I tried them, and still didn't have any luck.
Here's the error that I've been getting.  My internal HD is:
I have some minor files on there that take up at total of about 450 MB.
I don't know how it would need to back up a size larger than my internal HD. I wonder if it is trying to back-up my changes plus the back-up of the other MBP on the external drive connected to the time capsule.

    Try "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup".
If Moible Applications is inside iTunes instead of your media folder then you should consider using File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder>".

  • I can't restore from the back-up file "bookmarks-2013-03-31". "File not supported".

I'm using Firefox in Swedish, but I think these would be the terms in English:
I did a back-up of my bookmarks in Firefox before I formated my PC, which resulted in this file: "bookmarks-2013-03-31". It's not an HTML-file and I think neither an JSON-file. When I'm now trying to "recover" the bookmarks from this file, it say's that the file-type isn't supported. What the heck?!? A back-up file that isn't supported by it's own program??!?
(I just did a quick and simple back-up, and am now trying to restore it. It shouldn't be any problem, as I see it).

I also was not able to restore my old bookmarks, which I tried to do so through the backups in the "Old Firefox Data" folder. I attempted to open the file bookmarks-2013-07-02.json but got the message that "To open this file, Windows needs to know what program to use. What do you want to do? 1) Use PC Health Advisor to find a program to open this kind of file or 2) Use Windows to manage this kind of file." When I click the first option, I get a list of software application options I can download in three categories, but I already have at least one in each category in my system. When I click the second option , I get sent to a Google search page that lists all kinds of websites about JSON files, none of which seems to provide a clear route to a solution.
I just tried adding quotes around the file name as per the above suggestion, but I got the message that a file name cannot include quotes. Also, for some reason, my file only contains the title and date added, none of the stuff in between that apparently is also supposed to be there.
In any case, shouldn't I be able to restore old bookmarks simply by clicking an older backup version under "Restore" under "Show All Bookmarks"? I also tried this, three times in fact, but got no results.

  • How can I connect my existing firewire drives to the "new" Macbook pro

I'm thinking about getting a new Macbook Pro, to take on the road.
I already have four external drives with firewire and USB 2.0 ports.
After I looked at the new machine I noticed it only had USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports.
I dont see any Firewire to Thunderbolt technology out there nor do I see any  USB3.0 to anything technology. How can I connect my drives to the new system?

You can use the USB3 connections for USB2.  That's downward compatible.  Just runs at USB2 speed.
Just this week apple announced a couple of TB adapters, TB-to-ethernet and TB-to-firewire.  But the FW adapter is not at the apple store as yet (at least at the time I am posting this).

  • HT1731 Airport Express: Can't connect to existing network in Client/Bridge Mode

I have a new Airport Express that I'm trying to use to connecto to an existing wireless network to provide wireless access to a Mac Mini with a broken antena.
The Mini has it's non-functioning wireless turned off, an ethernet cable connected to the WAN port of the Airport Express and I'm trying to follow the directionf from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US The relavent portion is:
    Using AirPort Utility 6
Connect an appropriate cable between the AirPort Express and the device it will serve.
Plug the AirPort Express into a power outlet.
After the AirPort Express starts up, select it in the AirPort Utility screen.
If you are now repurposing the AirPort Express, first reset it from Base Station in the menu bar and selectRestore Default Settings.
After the AirPort Express completes the restore process, choose it from the Wi-Fi menu in the upper-left corner.
    Click the Other Options button.
Select "Add to an existing network".
CHoose the Wi-Fi network name from the Wireless Network Name menu that you wish to join and click next.
Enter the password to this network if required.
I cannot get past step 3 w/o actually configuring the AE. If I follow the propmts on the screen (by jumping to step 7), I get the error "No Base Stations Found." I know the wireless router works because the Mini can reach it even with it's broken antena, and three other decives in the samre vicinity can connect to the existing wireless network.
If I turn on the wireless on the Mini, the Airport utility find the newtork, but gives a "unknown error" when trying to connect.  If I try to use the ethernet port on teh AE instead of the WAN port, the Airport Utility says that the ethernet cable needs to be connected to the WAN port, but Airport Utility shows a diagram for connecting to the Cable Modem Directly.
    I'm pretty stumped here.
    Ray

Found a solution a few mins ago:
    Unplug the AirPort Express
Disable the WiFi on the Mini
In Network Preferences, set Ethernet as the default connection using DHCP.
Connect the Mini to the LAN port for the AirPortExpress
    Plug-in the AirportExpress
FROM A DIFFERENT COMPUTER CONNECTED TO THE WIRELESS NETWORK, follow steps 6-9 above.
This worked for me, but I don't know how to resolve the issue if you don't have a 2nd computer available.  I had also tried this via Airport Utility on an 1st generation iPad, but that didn't work. Maybe somebody in the same situation could try it with an iPad that can run a newer verion of iOS.

  • Can't connect or create a log file

    hi there
I can connect to my esxi 5.1 no issue with the onxy app - but connecting with the vsphere client on 1545 fails with "the request failed because of a connection failure" screenshot attached. If I try to enable logging to see whats going on the file doesnt get created, in any directory I choose. looks like a simple connection issue but credentials/ip are good. I noticed that when i make the initial connection with the onyx app it doesnt prompt for credentials to the esxi which i thought a bit odd, just goes straight to "connected..." is this by design?
    Thanks!

  • Time Capsule - 2GB - Can't connect to existing 5-GHz network

Just purchased the Time Capsule - I was going to try to connect it to my existing 5-GHz network - but every time I try - it seems to get stuck in an infinite loop of trying to connect... If I try to instead connect it to my existing 2.4-GHz network - it works ok.
    Any suggestions?!?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the disussions!
Can you clarify where you have the Time Capsule located in relation to your router that is creating the 5 GHz network? If it's in another room or area, how many walls must the signal pass through from the main router to the Time Capsule?

  • Can't connect to pc to transfer files

I've gotten to the part where you put our username/domain and password in but not sure if that is the PC's usn/psw or mine that i use to sign into my mac? I've tried both but still no luck. It won't let me connect to transfer my files to the mac. Any suggestions on trying to connect to the network?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Here's one way you can approach this:
On the PC right click on the C: hard drive and then click the Sharing Tab, in the lower box check 'Share this folder on the network' and 'Allow network users to change my files' - if you don't want it to appear on the Mac Desktop as HDD (C:) give it another name. Close the panel.
On the Mac open System Preferences/Sharing and check 'File Sharing' then hit the Options button and check the third box "Share files and folders using SMB (Samba) Windows then add at least one username/account there which has read/write access to your hard drive (usually your own) then click 'Done' and close the Sharing panel.
Lastly on your Mac Desktop go to the top menu bar and select Go/Connect to server and in the pop up window that appears enter smb://nameofPC and hit connect - often the first time you will see a username/password dialogue appear and in this you enter a username/account on the PC
If all goes well you will then see the C: icon on your Desktop and be able to open/browse and copy files across from the PC to the Mac, permissions depending you will be able to write to most folders on the PC from the Mac but not everything.
To speed things up next time drag the PC hard drive icon that's now on your Desktop into your Favourites folder - then all you need do next time is double-click on that to open.
It's also possible to access the Mac from the PC by using CTRL E to bring up Explorer then Network Connections then Windows Local Network and the Mac 'should' appear for you to login. I've found it best to have Workgroup set to 'local' on both Mac and PC for this to work right however.

  • Can't connect to existing wireless network

I have a Qwest wireless modem (model 2701hg-d) and am trying to set up the Airport Express (AX) to use already existing wireless network wirelessly (ie without the ethernet cable). Is this possible? Do I need a wireless router instead?
In order to set it up I have the AX plugged into the modem via an ethernet cable. I have reset the AX and then run the Admin Utility. Once it recognizes the AX I then go to the Airport tab and select 'Join an Existing wireless Network (wireless client)' and then enter in the Network Name exactly as it is spelled in my modem configuration. I check the 'Internet' tab and it says connect using: Wireless Network and the 'Network' tab is grayed out. Then I hit update and the admin utility no longer lists the AX and the AX light is blinking amber. Not sure what is going on. I am using v6.3 of the firmware. I have read the posts extensively and am wondering if my modem is not capable of handling this?

Not exactly certain if your situation is like mine, but you could check out this previous post:

  • Where can i find where ipod backs up files on computer

had old ipod turned in, didnt know i would need UDID number for game data. have ipod backed up on computer, will that number have been backed up? and if so how do i find it? i called apple and they didnt even know what that number was. please help, spent alot of money on game add ons and now there gone unless i can find number on computer

I've never heard of any app other than one in developer testing asking for the UDID. In any case, to the best of my knowledge, there's no way to get a UDID for a device you no longer have. It's not exposed in the backups as the serial number is.

  • Can't connect to OS X server file share

    Hi there
I have a very basic setup (I would think).
Mac mini 2012 base model with 10.9 (fresh install) and server.app.
I went through the very simple build in setup guide for setting up filesharing in the server app and likewise with time machine and everything is in green on the server app as shown on the attached image
Under details for each I can see the two users (me and my wife) both with read-write access and the default system administrator (read-write), System group (read-write), Everyone Else (read only) and a strange code user (5937CDE-D22D-.......) with read-write access as well.
I can see the server in the finder sidebar on other macs on the network, but when I click it I just get an error saying something like "there was a problem connecting to the server..." (it's in Danish and I don't know the exact translation). I can then click "connect as..." which will just give the same error again or I can connect through screensharing
So how come the screensharing works, but not to the fileshare? Obviously time machine that wants to access the backup share doesn't work either.

Ah... I sort of figured it out. I thinkt the problem had two reasons.
    1) The mac was both connected over wifi and LAN and it seems to have confused my router. When I disconnected the LAN and asked the client to forget the recent servers I could find the server again.
    2) The username was the full name instead of the shortname. When the dialogue box on the client asked for a password it automatically suggested the shortname (johndoe). Once I changed this to the full user name (John Doe) I could get access. Only problem is that almost every time I re-connect I have to delete the shortname suggested in the form and replace it with the full name. I have tried to delete/edit all the saved passwords+usernames in my keychain to match the full user name, but it still have a tendency to suggest the shortname. It won't give an actual error message using the shortname, but just open the networkdrives (with only read access) and say connection failed.
For (1) the solution is easy although I would prefer to have both LAN (which is far more stable than wifi where I live) and wifi connected. Any thoughts on how to do this without generating two instances of the same computer on my local network are appreciated.
For (2) I simply don't know what to do appart from manually change the user name each time I want to log on. Any help here is also appreciated.
