Can't connect to gmail smtp server but receiving fine

I have been using gmail with my mac osx mail fine for several years with no hiccups. Recently, I had problems with gmail and my ipad but with an app, it's now working fine.
Today, when sending an email from my imac, I had the old error prompt show up asking for my password. Had a bad feeling about this. I entered it. Then again. Wouldn't take it.
Now it's telling me that my smtp server is offline. It works fine with webmail, so the gmail isn't the problem. I'm able to receive mail just fine and also send mail with other accounts.
I have tried rebullding my mail by letting it build a new index file and that didn't help. I read some advice about deleting the container folder. I don't have that folder on my imac. Can't locate it.
Can anyone please help? I hate using webmail and want to go back to using mac osx mail.
imac / 2.66 / 8gb RAM / 10.8.3
Thanks,
Bob

No bad form to worry about, just the reduced attention to your problem that a solved designation causes.
If I remove my gmail account, I'll be able to get all the emails back when I create my new one - because it's imap?
Yes, but check 2 things,
1. That it is setup as Imap (POP is possible but is not the default) and 2 that you have not created any local folders that house mail from the Imap account, if you did then you must export them before removing the account.
What do you mean by verify both passwords? You mean imap and smtp?
I assume I should be using the application specific password in my mail settings?
Thanks,
Bob
Imap and SMTP should be the same, but check.

Well I am feeling a bit silly now because that was all I had to do. In the past Workgroup Manager had always opened right up to the list of my users, I never even thought to click on that but apparently that was all that was needed.
I still am not sure how the iChat Server preferences changed themselves on me, but it is not the first time I have had weird "settings" issues with our Snow Leopard Server.
    Thanks!

  • Suddenly can't connect to gmail SMTP for outbound mail

I have both a MacBook Air and an IMac. Recently, I lost the ability on both machines to send outbound mail. With Apple Care help on my supported machine (the MacBook Air,) we rebuilt my gmail mail account on that machine and was able to reconnect and send outbound mail. (receiving mail was never a problem)
However, going through all of the same steps on the IMac, it keeps saying :"Gmail (offline) next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) on the account information screen. When I run Connection Doctor, I have a red light next to Gmail SMTP with the message "Trying to log into this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct."
Well, the username and password are correct. I just changed them, and can access Gmail from all of my other devices...MacBook Air, iPhone, IPad.
What is really odd it that is was working until about 3 weeks ago.
Any suggestions/ideas? I'm not particularly technical...just find this very frustrating and don't know where to turn.

  • IPod Touch can't connect to imap/smtp server

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch running iOS 3.1.3 (it's the iPhone OS, and I suspect that this problem is OS related).  I have half a dozen gmail accounts to which I connect to over WiFi using IMAP for reading and SMTP for sending.  It works flawlessly at home and almost always in public WiFi (Tim Hortons, McDonalds, Second Cup, Starbucks, malls, etc.).  Today, I tried it at another site, and all I got were the messages in the subject line (to the best of my memory).  Googling revealed that 2 ways to solve this was to re-enter the login information and to reset to factory default settings.  Obviously, I don't want to do the latter until I exhausted all possibilities.  However, the former doesn't work.  In fact, even after going to locations where email worked in the past, I continued getting the above error messages.  Web access, however, is fine.
When I got home, email worked flawlessly.  That means I don't have to reset to factory default.  But what could cause such a departure from the long history of proper functionality?

could you please explain how this is a gmail issue?
You are having a problem connecting to your email severs, which as you stated is Gmail ("half dozen gmail accounts")  You have recreated the accounts in the device without success.  THis all speaks to Gmail issues. Google has recently changed the Gmail configuration and severs. AFAIK, there is no incompatiblity with iOS 3.1.3, but you need to verfy with Google.
As for being an iPod Touch, I *suspect* that the OS is more likely the problem than the hardware.
Huh?  What's that got to do with iPhones?  Both the iPhone and iPod Touch use iOS.  Your post is about an iPod Touch 1G and belongs in the iPod Touch forum, where it has already been moved.

  • Can gmail smtp server be used (requires authentication)

I would like to configure my 10g XE environment with Apex to handle email.
However, I don't want to set up an SMTP server on my environment. Instead I would like to route to the gmail smtp server.
But gmail like many SMTP servers requires authentication and TLS security. Can authentication be coded into the calls or any suggestions on how to handle?
    Thanks,
    Stephen

With an Virtual Directory solution, you can authenticate Iplanet Web Server against nearly anything including any LDAPv3 Directory Server, Microsoft Active Directory, Windows NT Domains, Oracle RDBMS, IBM DB2 RDBMS, Microsoft SQL, and others.
All of this is done dynamically and doesn't require any heavyweight synchronization process. The Virtual Directory acts as a dynamic schema / DIT / data translation engine for different types of repositories.
OctetString's Virtual Directory Engine is one such example. You can download a 30 day evaluation copy at:
    http://www.octetstring.com
It will take you all of 30 minutes to get iPlanet Web Server authenticated against and using groups from things like Oracle RDBMS, Windows NT Domains, or Active Directory.

  • I have trying for days to download Firefox 4.1. It goes through all the motions, but when it gets to the final step, it can't connect with the download server. What should I do? It keeps telling me this download is strongly recommended.

It downloads everything, but when I re-start, it can not connect to the download server.
I've left it open and it never connects.

I can't connect to the Itunes server..firewall is allowing it but no connection to the Itunes store. The sign in and password are correct

Why not do a "Restore"  in iTunes to set it back to factory settings? That will eliminate any previous information that is causing you issues in use. You will have an iPod which you can sync as if it is new with your settings and info.

  • I have a update waiting and the box that says software update trys to connect to the update server but it can't do you have any help for me cause its saying i need this update real bad

firefox says i have a update waiting but i try to install it and the software update box pops up and says (connecting to the update server) but thats as far as it goes can you please help me solve this issure

Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.<br />
You may need to delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.
    XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;user&gt;\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
You may need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
    Do a clean (re-)install:
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    * It may not be necessary to create a new profile, so first try if it works with your current profile and if not then create a new profile.
You do not need to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Mail IMAP from Gmail - smtp server does not work.

I have a question about the inner-workings of Gmail IMAP as it relates to sending mail on an outgoing smtp server. When I'm at school (high school), *I can only receive mail; I cannot send it*. I talked to my computer science teacher and he said the school restricts outgoing messages because apparently people can use the school's smtp server to send spam...or something along those lines. Anyway, connecting to Gmail directly works fine, but I also had a nice setup on some shared computers for other students (who are not computer-savvy) who needed to access a single email address. Is there a way around this (albeit minor) inconvenience? Can I set up Mail preferences to use a different port or something in order to avoid the smtp restriction? Not that big of a deal, but still somewhat perturbing (and I will go to great lengths to fix it lol). Tell me if this is doable/if you need more info.
    Thanks!

  • Gmail SMTP server offline

After changing gmail password I can receive Gmail but cannot send Gmail. The Gmail SMTP server says it is offline. Connect Doctor says failed to login to SMTP server and check password. Password is correct as it works to enter gmail on line.
Google iMap accounts are OK but not the SMTP
I have tried creating an automatic App password but it does not work so I revoked it
Email works fine on iPad and iPhone but not on the IMac

Try re-entering all of the account's preferences, it is possible one or more preference is corrupt even though it looks fine.

  • IPhoto 11 (9.2.1) can't use iCloud Mail smtp server for email.

iPhoto 11 (9.2.1) can't use iCloud Mail smtp server for email.  "The email server didn't recognise username/password combination".  Both appear correct in preferences/accounts.  Mail sends and receives messages perfectly.
(This problem also occurs when trying to send from Thunderbird, however both iPhoto and Thunderbird can send perfectly well using the Gmail server).

    Hi there
I should explain that I have 5 days experience of the iMac but have had a working iCloud account with my iPad for several months.  I don't think this is an iCloud issue as such. My thought is that this is something to do with the Mail application itself and its relationship to my Apple ID etc. (Perhaps when the iMac first configured itself?)
I have deleted and manually reset both Mail and iPhone account settings for iCloud using the Apple recommended settings and I have tentatively checked that the username/password combination is as expected in Keychain but I'm too much of an Apple novice to go any further with that.
On a PC I think I would try reinstalling the Mail programme but I don't see that as an option.

  • "Could not connect to this SMTP server" error box.

I suspect this is common, but what do I do? I get an error box when I attempt to send outgoing mail from Mail. Connection Doctor tells me under smtp.mac.com:budsteetle "Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences." I have made not changes in my account, so this appears to be an Apple problem. I can send mail OK through MobileMe on my old .Mac account. Ideas? Usually, the Outbox empties eventually, so far it has been 1/2 a day.
    thank you...

  • Mac mail problem with gmail smtp server

    I had 2 gmail addresses.
about 3 weeks ago mac mail decided to always send email from both addresses as if they originated from only one address.
I did not solve this problem.
For non related reasons, I got another gmail address.
    The same thing started happening.
I now had 3 gmail addresses, but recipients were receiving all email from only one address.
I went to email preferences and started exploring and experimenting.
I was able to reconfigure so that the new gmail address sends from its proper smtp address.
However, there is nothing I can do to get my second email address to send from its proper smtp.
For some inexplicable reason the dialogue box beside "Outgoing Mail Serve (SMTP): tells me that smpt server is offline.
I have no idea how to get it back online.
(In the server editor, there is one more gmail smtp server than I need, 4 instead of 3 and 2 are offline - one just went off tonight)
All relevant mail boxes are online.
Does anyone know anything about this problem?

    Jack,
There are mail forums in the forums for OS X, because you are using Leopard 10.5.6 (why haven't you upgraded to 10.5.8?) you should re-post in that forum. Mail comes as part of the OS that is why they're there. The address is:

    Hi,
I experienced a similar issue. It seems only standard SMTP is supported as of now. Oracle's workaround they offered me is to use a standard SMTP to forward mails to the required SMTP. I was testing stuff so I went for a mock SMTP server (although I don't think that is what you are looking for).
    Best regards,
    Pedro
