Can't connect to internet, always get (169.254) ip address

Mac Mini with OS X 10.5.8
Internet connection worked for years up til now.
I know the Comcast modem is working because my other computer accesses service fine.
I only connect directly from the Comcast modem to a single computer at any one time (to prevent conflicts).
I have disconnected the battery from the Comcast modem and rebooted the modem and my computer.
I have called Comcast and had them troubleshoot the line and reset the modem. All looks fine from their end.
I have trashed all plist files that have to do with the network (and let the computer regenerate new ones). I then reconfigured the network and the settings in Network seem exactly the same.
Any ideas? Could a bad internal battery be enough to cause this? Should I zap PRAM? Any suggestions will be entertained. Thanks, Peter
(Also, in Proxies dialog, I tried removing the info (*,local, 169.254/16) in the "Bypass Proxy Settings for These Hosts and Domains" and it would cause the "Configure Proxies" selection to default to "Always Use PAC File". Had to go back and retrash all the plist files to have Proxies go back to "Configure Proxies-Manually".
Here are my settings:

In my G5 (OS X 4.11) the Network area for Proxies has "Configure Proxies"  set to "Manually", same as Mac Mini (OS X 5.8); that's why I can't understand the ability of one to work and not the other.  (I'm fairly clueless about all the jargon in the Network configuring process, so asking me about proxies, etc will garner few informed response.)
Yes, I did use the "Insert Image" command. Don't know why it would be messed up. I will try again here.
And I'll try powering down the Modem for a longer period. Thanks.

  • Can't connect to Internet through working WiFi connections

My system is constantly getting bad IP addresses from wireless base stations. Problem started while I'm traveling. At last location, of my three computers my PC would connect, but the two Macs kept having problems. Both worked at first, but then one or the other would get 169. IP addresses. One would seldom connect after restarting. The other would eventually get a good address.
I'm now at location number two. My Mac connected once, but now keeps getting bad IP addresses. Two PCs are working here, and so is another Mac. Restarting, running diagnostics, resetting the modem, and trying to renew the DHCP lease are all not working. Very frustrating.
I launched iChat on both Macs but mine can't see the other Mac. My Mac says I'm connected to the network, but can't surf the internet. Tried to manually enter IP numbers but that didn't work either.

For clarity, the 169. addy is not bad, it's self assigned, as is usual when it can't find any being handed out.
Try making a New Location as a test.

  • 5 out of 6 devices can't connect to Internet

Just to preface,  this was all working hours ago.
airport express,  Mac book pro, ipad, boxee box and Western digital live Nas all can't connect to internet.
my Samsung Galaxy s3 has no problems however.
normally if I can't get an ip address I would just say the Internet is down from the isp. But because I've got one device where it's working fine gives me cause to think otherwise.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You want the device that is directly connected to the modem to furnish the PPPoE service.
This is sounding like you had your Mac connected directly to your modem at one time, so in that type of setup, the PPPoE connection on the Mac would have been correct.
But, since you have added the Time Capsule....and it is now the device that is directly connected to the modem.... the Time Capsule must be configured to provide the PPPoE connection service, not your Mac.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Your settings should look like this:
    Connect Using = PPPoE
Account Name = Your user name with your ISP
Password = Your password with the ISP
    Verify Password
Service Name.....leave this area completely blank
    Connection = Always On
    Disconnect if Idle = Never
Update to save settings and the TC will restart
Either delete the PPPoE connection on your Mac, or if  you want to retain it in case you need to connect your Mac directly to the modem at some point in the future, make that connection inactive.
If you are connecting an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC to your Mac, you want the Ethernet connection to be active on your Mac. This should happen automatically if the PPPoE connection is inactive or has been deleted.
Be sure to power cycle the entire network at this point. Power all devices down, or der is not important.
Wait a moment or two, then start the modem and let it urn for a moment by itself
Start the TC and wait for a green light
Then start each device one at a time until the network is back up

  • WRT54G can''t connect to internet or 192.168.1.1

My router used to work. I updated the firmware to 4.21. xx and after that I can't connect to internet.
When I connect directly to modem, I can go to the internet . I power recycled etc but when I connect to the router, it says limited connectivity.  It shows autoconfigurtion ip:169.254.251.135
I don't know why this is so.
I don't have the setup cd disk but I read the users' guide and it seems that I really don;t  need the cd. But no matter what I do , I can't get to 192.168.1.1 .
Do I need a setup cd and where I can download?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks ,
    Sankar

Do the 30/30/30 Hard Reset and then check the IP address on that computer. For the reset steps do the following:
The following procedure will clear out the NVRAM and set Router back to default values:
With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on back of unit for 30 seconds
Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds
Plug the unit back in STILL holding the reset button a final 30 seconds....
If still you are getting same IP address then try to reduce the LAN card speed. Here is the step:
START--> right-click My Network Places and click Properties
right-click on the device and click properties
    Click on the CONFIGURE button
Select the ADVANCED tab and the settings you can alter are listed on the left.

I believe that this is a problem for your ISP.  Their Customer Service should be able to help you.  There may be some settings that can be changed to solve the problem.  They would know what the settings should be.  I don't believe that it is a hardware problem.

  • Can't connect to internet on my old g4 flat screen, network + airport ok

I installed an airport card on the g4 (dome) and connected to our wireless network, which gets a signal, (though the status is "not available"). I can't connect to internet (server not recognized), and every time I check the internet assistant app, the setting has been changed back to modem. The router is in the basement: my iMac is on the first floor and works fine, the g4 is on the second floor. Is that too far away? Do I need to update the g4? Two minis also work fine, one on first floor and one in basement. Any help appreciated.

Which iMac G4 do you have? Some iMac G4s are 802.11b while the later ones were 802.11b/g.
If your wireless network is configured for "802.11g only", the older 802.11b iMac G4 won't be able to connect.
If your wireless network is configured for "802.11n only", the iMac G4 won't be able to connect since it isn't compatible with that.

  • Can't connect to Internet after sleep mode

    Hi,
Most times after put my iBook in sleep mode and reopen it, I can't connect to Internet. I use a normal cable connection by ethernet, but at these times, when I check the network status, it says I don't have any cable connected. The modem apears to be OK, with the computer's light on. I plug off and plug in the cable and it doesn't change and it happens the same when I click in DHCP renew - it just doesn't give any IP adreess. I need to restart the computer to get the connection again.
    Ibook G3 700   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am trying other solutions today.
It can not change to another wifi network without switch off the wifi.
That's mean I have switch off and re-open the wifi signal every time when it show like this capture.
I waiting for more than 5 mins and it will search another wifi network automatically but it still "No internet connect".
My MacBook Pro is no any WiFi issues.

  • Can't connect to internet via MacBook Pro to Airport Extreme

I can't connect to internet via MacBook Pro to Airport Extreme. I reset AE and modem (power down and back up again). Some computers on my home network will connect fine and others won't. The ones that won't don't populate the DNS server or the Search Domains. AE shows up on all the machines. I have one computer also connect to AE via ethernet and it has the same symptoms. Why do some Macs connect and others don't. Even when I get them to connect when I shutdown or put in sleep mode over night I lose the internet connection and have to start all over. Very frustrating.

Regrettably no replies. I have struggled with this for days with no success and I have given up on the Airport Extreme. I have found several other Forum posts with very similar problems and no one seems to have a solution to this. It seems other wireless routers work better than the Apple product. I was able to get my old Linksys wireless router reset and it is set up and working well. The Linksys router does populate the DNS servers and domains where as the AE does not. Apple engineers should look into this. If I am mistaken and there is a fix for this someone please let me know, otherwise my AE will probably appear on Ebay very soon.

  • Pcc can't connect to internet

    Hi Chazamsk,
    Welcome to the community,
This sounds like you could be behind a firewall or an antivirus program is not allowing this device to work online.
I would suggest going through your firewall settings and add PC Companion to the exceptions list.
let us know how you get on.

New problem, after pcc can install in my pc, now it can't connect to internet. It makes "not accesible". I have tried to find other solutions from other resource. But none of them works to solve my problem. Please give best solution....

  • Can't connect to internet sharing

Ever since updating to Mountain Lion on my iMac, I can't connect to internet sharing with my iPad 3.    Does anyone know how to get it to work?  I just get the message 'Unable to join the network 'xxxx'.
I've tried setting up new networks, I've tried it with and without passwords, restarted both machines, and it still won't work.
However, my iphone4 connects OK.  Anyone else having this issue with the iPad 3?
    Thanks
    Bob

It's so simple to setup and you have been using it in the past, but just in case, this is Apple' kb article about Internet sharing with Mountain Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10740?viewlocale=en_US
Have you rebooted your router or cable modem? Unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and plug it in again.
You might be better off posting in the Mountain Lion forum if you haven't already done so.

  • Just got new ipad2 and can't connect to internet...recognizes wifi network but won't connect

just got a new ipad2...recognizes wifi network at home, but can't connect to internet...help???

I just had a similar problem.  Both the ipad 1 and ipad 2 in my household quit connecting to the network even though it seemed to recognize it.  if you think it is recognizing your network, just not connecting, check to see if bluetooth is turned on.  i had to turn bluetooth off and then manually enter the DNS number.
My solution also came after I re-started my network and reset all the settings on the ipad2.  The DNS number then showed along with IP submet Mask and router.  I used that dns number to enter into ipad1 after turning bluetooth off on it.
Totally unscientific fix that may have been more coincidental than correct but you might try it.  BTW--no idea how bluetooth even got turned on to begin with.
