CAn't connect to Internet Through Time Capsule-Self Assigned IP Adress

My iBook battery died. After connecting to power source, I can't connect to the internet. I get a message that the iBook is self assigning the IP address. How do I correct this? I've removed the battery & done several restarts with no success.

Here's 10.4 directions, not to different from 10.5, see if it helps...
Go to System Preferences
Click Network
Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.

  • I can't connect to internet using Time Capsule router.

My hard drive recently died. I took the iMac to the Apple store and had a 500 GB hard drive installed. I disconnected my Time Capsule so the Apple rep could restore my data. Now when I try to reconnect to the internet via Time Capsule router, it won't connect. The cable modem is fine, and the Time Capsule's status seems OK with the green light. It even seems to be backing up OK. I don't think I did anything differently, other than unplug it in order to have the Apple rep restore my data. Any thoughts out there?

It sounds like the cable company neglected to mention to you that you must completely reset the modem whenever you change the device that it is connected to. That's because the modem "associates" with a device and "remembers" the settings.
If you then change devices, the modem will "look" for the old device that was connected to it and it will of course not "find" it, so it won't connect.
That's why you need to do the complete sequence that I provided.
If you still cannot connect after the complete reset, then you may have a defective modem. I'm not trying to pick on the cable company....and yours may be an exception...but the last time my modem was having problems, the provider kept insisting that "everything looks good". But, they always say that.
I turned the modem off and called them back an hour later and they still said "everything looks good".
An Ethernet cable has a slightly wider plug than a phone cable. If that's the only connector on the modem, then it must be the right one. Ethernet cables do fail. You might want to check your cable, just in case.

  • Vista laptop can't connect to Internet via Time Capsule

I just setup my brand new 1TB Time Capsule and everything works perfectly with my iMac. Backups work and I can connect to the Internet fine. I'm using the TC as my network router, so everything will connect through the TC. My one-year old Compaq Vista laptop can connect to the Internet if the wireless security is turned off, but once I turn it on..no Internet for the laptop. It can connect and see the network, but can't get to the Internet. I've reset the TC several times trying various setting combinations and I've went through the laptop and tried to update Windows and any drivers that I thought might help, but nothing.
I have the following Wireless settings on the TIme Capsule:
    - radio mode set to Auto
    - radio channel selection set to Auto
    - wireless security set to WPA/WPA2 Personal
Am I missing something? I can't figure if this is a settings issue, laptop issue, or a Time Capsule issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This might be your security settings. Open the Local Security Policy utility:
    %windir%\system32\secpol.msc /s
Navigate to Local Policies folder, Security Options view. Find “Network security: LAN Manager authentication level”. If it is set to “Send NTLMv2 response only” change it to “Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.
ONE PROBLEM THOUGH. I believe ONLY PROFESSIONAL versions of windows have the local policies acceptable.

  • Can I connect my iPhone through Time Capsule

I found out that I could plug the iPhone USB line in the Time Capsule for charging. However, I can't find the iPhone on my Macbook. I am wondering whether I could connect iPhone with my iTunes Library through connecting the iPhone USB line to Time Capsule. If so, I will then never need to plug out the USB line and charge iPhone or update it.
Looking forward to any answer. Thanks in advance.

The USB port on the Time Capsule is designed for wirelessly sharing access to things like printers and hard drives with other computers on your network.
Other than for charging, you'll need to plug you iPhone into a USB port on your computer itself.

  • Windows PC running Vista can't connect to internet via Time Capsule

My Macbook works beautifully with my TC, however I cannot get my Windows PC (running Vista) to connect to the internet via the TC. My PC shows it's connected to the TC, however when I launch the web browser it shows the cannot connect page. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so I welcome your feedback.

I have the same problem. Did you work it out? If yes, what did you do?

  • DirecTV DVR HR20 connect to internet via Time Capsule

    Hi Everyone,
I've searched and come across various topics about connecting the DirecTV DVR to the internet via Time Capsule, but none of them seem to provide a solution for wireless connectivity.
Can anyone point me to a topic where it describes the steps and any issues related to getting my DirecTV DVR connected to the internet via the Time Capsule wirelessly.
I have gone through the setup and I get connected to my network, but I get the error when it tries to connect to the internet.
Do I have to do any port forwarding or anything special?
I use to have my Netgear supporting this configuration, just purchased the Time Capsule and now I cannot get my DVR connected.
    Thanks for the support
    Jeff...

The Direct TV DVR has an Ethernet connection on the back, which is strongly recommended if you intend to download movies or any kind of high definition material.
If you are trying to use the new Whole Home feature, wireless is not supported by Direct TV for this service.
If you are trying to connect to the DVR using wireless from the Time Capsule, you must be using some sort of wireless to Ethernet bridge device.
What device are you trying to use?
Have you verified that this device is compatible with the Time Capsule?
As a test, connect the adapter/bridge to your laptop and turn the wireless off on the laptop. Open your browser to see if you can get an Internet connection.
If you can, you know the network connection is good and the focus shifts to the DVR as the source of the problem.
If you can't, we'll need to figure out if the adapter you are using will work the Time Capsule.

  • Mac connects but PC won't connect to internet via TIme Capsule wireless net

I have my personal Mac and work PC at home. I'm switching from a wireless network using my airport extreme base station to a new time capsule. Had no problems earlier, but now with my new wireless network I have the following problem:
    - Both Mac and PC are able to connect to my home wireless network created through Time Capsule
    - Only Mac can access the internet via the Time Capsule wireless network
    - PC connects fine to the wireless network, but the settings indicate the internet cannot be accessed
I've tried fiddling with configurations etc. but cannot seem to get the PC to connect through to the internet using my Time Capsule.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem....What's the problem? Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions forum AZR-DC.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem...
Make it a habit to power down your modem whenever you connect something different to it. Merely detaching the AEBS and attaching your Time Capsule or your computer directly will confuse most modems, so leave it powered down for a few moments. Power down your other equipment while you're at it.
Then, power up all the equipment as follows:
Modem... wait a few moments for it to complete its startup sequence.
Time Capsule. Wait a few moments again.
    Computers.
Be sure your PC and your Mac are getting their addresses "via DHCP".

  • Wi-Fi connectivity lost, ethernet through time capsule works fine. Wi-Fi adapter broken??

Weird... I have been using my iMac through Time Capsule.... Wi-Fi set-up works fine for iPod, iPad and Windows PC. Last week I lost my connectivity on iMac temporarily... it re-connected automatically several times, but after yesterday the connection didn't come back. Hooked up my Airport Express for speakers so now I'm connected through Airport Express and Ethernet connector on iMac. What can be wrong here??? Any help is appreciated, and hey, no, the iMac is within Wi-Fi distance!
    Thans a lot..

Try downgrading your TimeCapsule to 7.5.2 (it proved to solve almost all the problems with Time Capsule). You can check how to do it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1218

  • I can't connect my WD to time capsule

hello, i've a problem, my WD "my book for Mac" don't connect to time capsule usb port.
When i try to connect to time capsule, airport app tell me the following: Must repair the disk.
How i can connect my WD to time capsule??
    Best regards.
    Pedro Pino

What TC model and firmware is it?
WD mybook are generally ok.. but the unpowered type will have problems.. you need a powered hub.
And some of the older TC will not handle all versions of some products.. WD keep changing them around.
It is often hard to figure out what works and what doesn't.

  • Connecting Cable Internet to Time Capsule

I know this is dumb, but I'm tired! I'm trying to set up Time Capsule using my cable internet. Time Capsule obviously does not have a coaxial cable port, so how do I actually get my internet feed into the Time Capsule? Do I need to keep using the router provided by Comcast and only use Time Capsule as a wireless backup? Thanks!

    sweetsweetjane wrote:

You don't need to keep Comcast's router, but you do need something that can operate as a cable modem.  Depending on the exact details of your Comcast service, something like this device.
If you don't want to go that route, you should put either the Comcast router or the Time Capsule into "bridge mode".  You're better off not having two devices both acting as a router.

  • Can't Get Internet Through Time Capsule

I bought TC 500gb tonight, and went through the paper instructions:
Plugged everything I'll be running on it into the ports (my tivo network adapter, my g4, a usb hub w/ an external drive & a usb printer).
installed the disc into my macbook pro
proceeded to launch the airport utility
It followed the instructions the best I could, and it said at one point proceeding will cause a flashing amber light, do you wish to ignore it (and I chose to, for lack of any idea of what else to do).
Long story short: Neither computer is getting any internet in or out. Network seems to be fine, though-- I see time capsule and printing works and I can use my external usb drive, but NO INTERNET!!!
And there doesn't seem to be any way to go back and start over--- any suggestions?
I have Roadrunner internet, but the modem doesn't have a name on it. It is connected to the correct stuff on the back of the time capsule.
If not for the fact my neighbor has an open wireless, I doubt I'd be able to write this.
    Please help. I'm very frustrated.
    ~Patrick

    Hi,
    Here's how we fixed it:
Push in the little button in the back of the time capsule with a paper clip or something for five seconds until it flashes amber rapidly.
Then open the airport utility, and also open your web browser--if you have internet working, and it is flashing amber, then click manual set up-- create a password for your wireless-- no need to mess with any of the settings to make them out of the ordinary or anything-- when you click update, it will say you have an incorrect setting regarding smpw, and there's an opportunity to unclick it-- do this, and then the time capsule will reboot, and the amber light will turn green, and your internet should work, if it is indeed the same problem I had-- they had never seen it before!
    Good luck!

  • Can no longer get to internet through Time Capsule

I recently had to give my iMac a static IP address, and no the wifi on my time capsule does not work.
The time capsule is and has been plugged into my LAN, my iMac plugs into the time capsule and can connect to the internet fine.
The time capsule has an IP address, has the correct DNS servers, router and domain.
from my iphone i can connect to the time capsules wifi, but cannot get out to the internet.

You have an iPhone question here, since you know that the Time Capsule is working correctly.  Try the iOS Troubleshooting Guide.

  • Lion 10.7.3  now can not connect to Brand new  time Capsule

Guys This is getting old.....I just purchased a new time capsule and it is not recognized by either of my airport utility programs (new one with lion  and old one updated to 5.6) what is going on? I unplug it recognizes and then it allows me to enter info ....I just want to use it to back up!!! and then tells me an error occured and it could not find TC so I start again and it's not there so I have to unplug again only to go back to the beginning!!!!!!! Is it just LION?

I had just gotten off the phone with a Apple tech ..whom had no idea what to do ..we tried everything  and he basically gave up! I hung up and got it connected!!!!!........apparantly u can not just use this as a backup...when you first set it up..(as is one of the options)? That is how I/we kept trying to set it up because that is all I want to do with it....I had to click the setting  for "JOIN" a network in order for the TC to then be recognized. It is a major flaw( among others) in their LION 10.7.3...even the tech said it is a problem with the software..because I filled his ear about how just last week My Airport icon was seeing nothing...There was no wifi! and no way to get on the internet ...So a great guy on this site( jgelements) talked me through restoring Lion which I did just yesterday and it took 5 hoursand I now have the wifi back (how long I'm keeping my fingers crossed)...and Yes I did have a previous TC but after lion it would no longer backup....I kept getting a message that it was full and needed to erased (which I know was incorect ) so after much deliberation I erased the whole TC and the next day it was dead! no light no sound DEAD! so I am half heartedly expecting this new one to not last long..seems Lion is just havoc and will continue to be. But thanks much for your response..I had just purchased it an hour ago and was excited about setting it up...and got thrown off the tracks and instantly posted ..and then called apple. How does a tech let someone off the phone with no answer? If I hadn't tried fiddling with it more I was going to return it...mind you I just purchased it for 319.00 w/tax and was not about to own a brick! You would think there would be a conversation about getting out of lion or something..instead he had nothing more to say ..but I could take the computer and the TC to the genious bar....NO THANKS!

  • Can I connect my Airport Extreme Time Capsule via ethernet to another router (non-Apple)?

I've been trying to figure this out for a few hours and have gotten nowhere. I have an Archer C7 AC1750 router set up in my office, connected to my Zoom 5341 DOCSIS 3.0 Modem; this has been my main router and has worked fine. I have moved some things around and now have my PS3 and PS4 in my master bedroom but can no longer hook them up via ethernet to the Archer C7. I have run ethernet through the attic into the master bedroom and want to use my Airport Extreme Time Capsule as a way to hook up the consoles via ethernet. If I can use the Airport Extreme to extend my wireless network back to the bedrooms that is even better, although that is an afterthought.
I am not sure what the settings need to be to make this happen. I have searched and tried a number of things but have not found a working solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please start over with a default reset on the Time Capsule. This will not affect any of the stored data that you might have on the drive. You can use the same device name and password that you used before if you wish.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes. Then hold in the reset button firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Make sure that the Ethernet cable connection from the Archer router connects to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
    Open up AirPort Utility
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on Time Capsule xxxxxx
AirPort Utility will suggest a setup, which you want to ignore
Instead, click the Other Options button
Select the Create a new wireless network setting and click Next
In the Network Name box, enter the exact name of your Archer wireless network
In the Base Station name box, enter a name that you want to use for the Time Capsule device
Uncheck the box to use a single password
In the Network Password box, enter the password for the Archer wireless network
    Verify on the next line
In the Base Staion box, enter a password that you want to use as a device password for the Time Capsule
    Verify on the next line
Click Next and wait while the AirPort Utility creates a network
Ignore the step about unplugging the modem and click Next
Do not enable the Guest Network option and click Next
Wait while the network is being set up. When you see the message that the wireless network is available, click Done
The Time Capsule will now appear in AirPort Utility with a blinking amber light
Click on the Time Capsule icon, and then click on Edit in the next small box that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the window
Change the setting for Router Mode from DHCP and NAT to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and click Continue
Wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart and you should have a green light
It would be an excellent idea to power off both the Time Capsule and Archer router now, wait a minute, then start the Archer router and let it run a minute. Then, start the Time Capsule up and give it a minute
You should be all set. The Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are now operable and the wireless network has been extended using AES encryption.

  • Can't connect to internet through Airport network

    Previously - worked
    Internet: DSL
    Network: via Airport Extreme
    Computers: 3 (G4 Tower, PowerBook G4, Xbox360)
Setup: I ran the ethernet cable out of the modem into the Aiport Extreme. Then I ran another ethernet cable into a router which then split the signal into two lines -- one going to the tower and one going to the Xbox. The laptop connected wirelessly. This worked using DHCP assigning multiple IP addresses to all on the network and indeed the two computers surfed the net with ease and I had no problems connecting or staying on Xbox Live.
    Currently - doesn't work
    Internet: Cable (Charter)
    Network: same
    Computers: same
Problem: I recently switched from DSL to Cable internet for faster speed. Here is what i found: When i connect the ethernet cable directly into the tower from the modem i can access the internet. If i connect the ethernet cable directly into the PowerBook G4 i get nothing. If i try to connect the ethernet cable to the Airport from the modem i get nothing as well. At first all i thought i had to do was change the account settings from that of the DSL to that of the Cable internet -- only there are no account settings for the Cable internet. I literally just plugged in the cable and was ready to go. I have tried resetting my airport to get rid of my previous [DSL] settings and redoing the Airport Setup Assistant to no avail.
    G4 Tower, PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

ok so i unplugged my modem for a few minutes and then plugged the ethernet into the airport and turned the modem back on. now i can get internet on both my laptop and my tower. that works, thanks!
an odd aside tho is that before, when i was connecting through PPPoE, the laptop would automatically connect to my network (regardless of how many networks the airport card was picking up). now that i have the airport set to just connect via ethernet i have to manually log onto my network every time. is there a setting i'm forgetting about that enables automatic log in or is this just the case with connecting via ethernet?
here is the next problem, though. i bought a wireless adapter for my 360 and it cannot detect my network. it detects two other different networks that are in my complex but not mine. i have no idea if this is an airport issue or a 360 issue as powerbooks just automatically detect an airport base station. i have tried testing it in the same room as the airport with no luck. the only way i have connected to Xbox Live so far was to hard line an ethernet cable to the 360, shut the modem off, turn it back on and connect that way. if anyone knows anything about the 360 or has had similar problems trying to get their 360 up and running wirelessly through an airport please let me know
