This laptop can connect to a wireless network but when we try to connect using the Ethernet cable we get a limited connection unknown network message.
I am getting all my information second hand from a niece I bought the laptop for who has it at university.  She has had tech support out from the university and they say its a configuration issue on the laptop and not problem with the cable or connection.
I have read on some websites that Norton anti virus could be an issue?  But I had removed this and installed Kapersky.  Any ideas?

The wireless connection uses essentially everything necessary except the plumbing.

how to connect to internet by using Ethernet Cable

There's no setting. Plug in the cable to the adapter for either USB or Thunderbolt and plug the other end into your router. You can turn off wireless at that point.

  • Can't connect to internet with Ethernet

I can no longer connect to the Internet through wi-fi or Ethernet.
All tests I run say I am connected to the Internet. This issued just started out of the blue when trying to connect wirelessly in my office only with the iMac, my macbook has no issues.
I contacted Comcast- they ran a bunch of tests and gave me a new modem- there was nothing wrong with the connection.
I brought it into Apple, they insisted it was my Internet connection. this went back and forth between Comcast and Apple a few times.
I contacted Comcast again, had an outlet installed so I wouldn't be wireless and could connect with an Ethernet cable thinking that maybe this was interference of some sort, it worked for a few weeks and then the other day it stopped. Again, I show that I am connected but nothing happens. I plugged in the macbook with the Ethernet and I am connecting fine.
The kicker is, I can physically move my iMac out of the office into another room and can connect perfectly through wi-fi. I am stumped
    any suggestions?

Yes, if you are running 10.6.8 in an iMac purchased in 2008, it is not a PowerPC
I asked the Hosts to move it to the correct forum for you

  • I can connect to network, but can't connect to internet with aebs

so i got a new Airport Extreme Base Station, hoping to replace my old og airport. i can connect to the new AEBS network easily, but i can't connect to the internet. with the old airport, i can connect to the internet no problem, hence i can write this post. "internet connect" tells me:
    +old, space ship looking airport:+
    connected to "myNetwork"
connected to the internet via ethernet
    +new and improved AEBS:+
    Connected to "myNetwork"
but that's it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. oh also, it seems to be running pretty hot. is that normal? thanks!

Hello mookyee. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It's always a good idea to power recycle all of your network components when changing configurations ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

You can try this im also using Curve 9300 3G version 6 o.s
1.Turn Off / Uncheck  your Mobile Network
    2. Enable Wi-fi if theres a WEP just put in it.
    3. Data Service should be ON - can be found on Mobile Network Options
    4. Browse - Browser, Social apps etc
    Hope helps
I guess if it is in WI-FI mode we can't call / receive Calls or Text on your network, seems strange in BB.

  • Airport is on and working, but can't connect to internet with MacBook

I have a green light on my airport Extreme, my laptop can join my network fine and get 4 bars of connectivity.
But I cannot get on the internet with my laptop. Websites don't work.
    What am I doing wrong?

Were you able to copy the DNS addresses to the MacBook? Were you able to delete the incorrect ones? Did you restart the MacBook before trying to access the Internet again?
How about the IP address for the MacBook? It should be in the address range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200. Is it? Of course I'm assuming that you did not change the default DHCP range of your AEBSn. Your iMac should also be assigned an IP in this range.

  • Problem connecting to internet with wired ethernet

Shortly after installing the Leopard 10.5.2 update, I could not connect to the internet through the wired ethernet connection. Connected wireless with no problem. Spent time with Apple tech. Determined that the machine was fine. Told to check the wall port. Had a windows PC connect fine through same cable and wall port. Also brought the MacBook to a different location. Connected to the ethernet port and connected to the internet successfully. Determined that the MacBook kept using an IP address of 192.168.1.103. This is the wrong address for my connection. The correct IP address is 172.16.7.1. Installed this address manually in the MacBook and established a connection. The MacBook cannot seem to connect automatically at this location. The Windows PC connects fine. The MacBook keeps coming up with the wrong IP address. Any idea what could be causing this??

The IP address when connected to a router will start with 192.168.x.x.
When connected to a modem you will get a different address.
When you connect to a cable modem for the first time it looks at the Media Access Control (MAC) address of whatever is connected.
It is a unique number for your device.
It only attaches to one device and provides an internet connection to that device by way of an IP address.
If you wish to connect another device and get an IP address for that new device, you need the modem to start over, since it has a monogamous relationship with the connected device.
In order to have the modem drop its relationship, it needs to be restarted.
This is not true of a dsl modem.
It sounds like your modem has linked with the MAC address of the router.
In order to connect directly to the modem and get it to link to your computer, you need to unplug the router from power.
    Disconnect its ethernet cable.
Restart the modem after about 15 seconds and wait until it restarts, about 2 minutes.
Then reconnect the modem and you will likely be able to connect to the internet.

  • Can't connect to Internet with new W520

I have a new ThinkPad W520 (4270).  My ISP is RoadRunner from Time Warner Cable.  The modem is Ubee U10C018.  I am trying to make a direct wired connection using the USB option.  I installed the drivers from the supplied disc, the message says they're installed, but the Device Manager says the USB Cable Modem has no installed drivers.  I tried downloading the driver from the UbeeInteractive web site onto a flash drive using my old computer, which works fine with the aforementioned modem (and which I'm using now to post).  I then reinstalled the driver from the flash drive onto the W520.  Again, the message said the driver had been successfully installed, but the Device Manager says the modem has no installed driver (and "Update Driver" is greyed out).  I spent two hours troubleshooting on the phone with TWC, who then said it wasn't their problem.
    Help, anyone?  Thanks for listening.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi SSDee,
I wanted to use the USB connection for a couple of reasons: 1) No Ethernet cable was supplied with the modem, and 2) I have the modem connected to a USB hub and want to be able to quickly switch between two different laptops using the one USB cable to the hub, which also has a printer and a mouse receiver attached.  (I did try connecting the modem directly to the new laptop without the hub just in case there was a problem with the hub, but that didn't work, either.  It seems clear that this is a driver issue, since everything works fine on the older laptop.)
I am frustrated that no 64-bit drivers seem to be available, and the old drivers say they've been installed, but Device Manager begs to differ...
However, I think at this point I will obtain an Ethernet cable and try it.
    Thanks for the response.

  • New Mac User - Problem connecting to Internet via work Ethernet cable.

    Hi all.
I am having problems connecting to the Internet through my work ethernet cable.
When I plug the cable in, Network settings tells me it's there and working, all of the ip numbers conform to what the IT dep say they should be, but safari won't connect to any site.
I can see the shared folders on the Exchange Server, and access the files no problem, but cannot get any connection to the internet.
Have called Apple Support and they seem to think the issue is with my work's Network which I am starting to agree with. We went through all of the settings together and they said it all looked ok. Then we tried deleting and re-installing the system configuration folder. Still no joy.
Airport works fine, (have tried it on three different routers), as long as the Ethernet cable is unplugged.
If I plug the Ethernet cable directly into a router, it works fine also.
I connect to my work network by running an ethernet cable from the wall socket to my Macbook. It's the same cable that I connect my PC with, and works fine on my PC.
    Anyone come across anything similar?
My Macbook is just over a day old and running OS X 10.5.5.
    Thanks

For some reason (and it's nothing to do with me) it's all working fine now.
    Thanks for your help nonetheless.
    Stu:-)

  • Can't connect to internet with static IP

I'm trying to set up port forwarding which requires that every device on the network have a static IP address. Yesterday, while I was already connected, in System Preferences -> Network I switched the Configure setting from "DHCP" to "DHCP with manual address" and entered an IP address (192.168.0.10 if it matters). This allowed me to set up port forwarding for a number of things. However, after putting my computer to sleep I was unable to connect to the internet. I had to switch the Configure setting back to "DHCP". Any thoughts on how to get my internet to work with a static IP? My ISP is Rogers and my modem/router (single unit) is the SMC8014WG.

Is your router IP address 192.168.0.1 ?? You must assign static IP addresses in the same subnet as your router is working. So generally speaking, the 1st 3 digits of your static IP address must match the router's IP address.
2nd, you should assign static IP addresses outside of the range your router uses for DHCP assignments. Going though your router's configuration info should allow you to discover what range the router is using for DHCP. If the range covers everything from 2 through 254, then change its configuration so you have some room for assigning static IP addresses.
NOTE: Some routers will allow you to continue to use DHCP and will make the Port Forwarding follow your system's MAC address (Media Access Control device; aka your ethernet address or WiFi address). If your router supports this, it would eliminate the need to use static IP addresses.
3rd, it is possible that your Mac did not pick up DNS server addresses even in DHCP w/manual IP address. You could try configuring your own DNS server addresses via System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS. You could just plug in your ISP's DNS servers, or you could even use the <http://OpenDNS.org> DNS servers.
NOTE: If you are going to get into Port Forwarding so you can access your systems across the internet, you should look into getting a free <http://no-ip.com> or <http://dyndns.org> dynamic DNS name and running a dynamic DNS updater on one of your home systems. This will make it easier to find your systems when away from home.

  • Can't connect to internet with new wireless n "Extreme" modem

I've had a D-Link DI-604 router for about 4 years-- and wanted to go wireless with an Apple Extreme but first have borrowed my neighbor's D-Link DIR-635 to just see if this will work in my brick house etc. (3 stories, lots of cement and brick...)
Well I get as far as the 192.168.0.1 and then "clone" my MAC address (nothing to do with a Macintosh that...). Note: I was using the same computer to connect to the internet as I previously had used with the D-Link DI-604.
I also give a manual (easy-to-remember) 5-letter password to my wireless connection--
But although this "reboots" the modem, it does NOT let me connect to the internet...
So I'm back to my D-Link 604 cable (wired) only...
One thing the set-up asked for is my HOST name. The only thing I see in the Network System Preferences is an ethernet number: 00:16:cb:cd:6c:3e but I don't find a "HOST" name-- and is that really needed? (In Belgium I'm using an ISP provider "VOO")
Any comments really appreciated-- I could actually see a fairly strong signal from the wireless router (I named it "SteveHermee" and I could see strong bands even from the top floor, with router in the basement...)-- but I could never connect to the internet via CABLE (wired) or wireless.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • WRT54G2- Can't connect to internet with wired pc

I have searched and can't find anything that is fixing my problem.  I have a desktop that is wired to the wireless router and a laptop that is wireless.  I never have problems with the laptop but, have problems with the desktop being unable to connect to the Internet after it is shut down.  I have reset the router, powered off the modem, restarted my desktop.  I am still unable to get the desktop to connect.  Could you tell me how to fix this and prevent it from happening?  The desktop is running Vista.
    Thanks!

I did this and it saved it because when I do ipconf the ip address is there.  However, when I went in to put this in I had a version for and Version 6 for TCP/IP.  I tired both but, it would only take the IP address in Version 4.  It is still not working.  I restarted my computer and power cycled the router.  When I hook the modem to the computer it works fine but, as soon as I hook the router up the internet connection is lost.  I have plugged it into different ports thinking maybe one of the port us messed up.  But, that isn't the problem.
