Can't Connect to Mac Mini Server 10.8

I want to use Screen Sharing to run a headless Mac Mini Server (late 2012) running Server.app under Mountain Lion.
From my Mac Mini I can connect to my iMac on the same LAN and use Screen Sharing, but I can't do the opposite, which is what I need to do. This is very frustrating because the support for this key feature is just plain awful.
Yes, screen sharing is checked under File Sharing preferences on the Mac Mini Server. And yes, both the display and the computer are set to never sleep on the Mac Mini Server.
What must I do to connect to my Mac Mini Server from my iMac so I can run the Mac Mini Server headless?
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

"Screen Sharing is currently being controlled by the Remote Management Service"
I've been fidgeting between the Server.app server Settings tab and the Screen Sharing checkbox in System Preferences Sharing pane all day.
I had tried "Share Screen" via Finder. After I tried "Share Screen" via Server.app from my client computer I noticed the above warning message when Screen Sharing in the server's System Preference Sharing pane was highlighted. I'm not sure which is cause or effect.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the server. Only "FIle Sharing," "Remote Login" and "Remote Management" are checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the server.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the client. In this case, "Allow remote administration using Server" is checked and grayed out. "Screen Sharing" is checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the client. (It may not have anything to do with a successful screen share connection, but it is on.)
Everything is now working better than expected. Thanks to you both for your help!

  • Can't connect to Mac Mini Server

I am setting up a new Mac Mini Server for the first time and cannot connect to it from the local network. The Mini is connected to the local network and the internet via an Airport Extreme Base Station. The server appears in the Finder of my MacBook Pro under "Shared" but will not connect. I was able to connect prior to turning on some services in Server Admin (including enabling the Firewall). I allowed the server to control the Base Station upon initial setup but was not sure if it configures and turns on it's firewall services automatically. Should I have Firewall enabled in Server Admin?

    Blankfer,
Did you re-enable Firewall in Server Admin and then open the screen sharing ports?
I'm still confused as to whether the Firewall in Sever Admin is only supposed to be used when the sever is acting as an internet gateway. I was under the impression that the Mini was controlling my Airport Extreme's firewall services for me in the background. After my initial configuration through Setup Assistant (including selecting the option to have the server control my Airport) the Firewall in Server Admin was not enabled. Does Firewall being disabled in Sever Admin mean I have no firewall up at all? ...I plan to have it running web and mail services so I need to make sure it's secure.
    -Thanks

  • Can the Late 2012 Mac Mini Server run on Lion, instead of Mountain Lion?

Since I plan to use this (USB 2) device http://plugable.com/products/UGA-2K-A
on a (yet to be ordered) Late 2012 Mac Mini Server, I am wondering:
could that box run on Lion, instead of Mountain Lion ? (the usb 2 device has some M.L. issues still)
I would not really need the server-part (only want the box because of the 2 disk drives), maybe that influences things.
Would there be any possibility to order it from Apple with Lion instead of Mountain Lion pre-installed ?
Could the latest hardware in the box not-function under Lion, thereby necessitating Mountain Lion ?
Thanks to all for thinking with me!
    Best,
    Arie

It's simple: you cannot use a version of OS X older than the version that the Mac shipped with.  At the very least, this is because the hardware may not be supported.

  • Can't connect to Mac Mini (ML Server)

I have a Mid-2009 Mac mini that's running the latest Mac OS X 10.8 Server. It's connected to my TV via HDMI.
For a long time, I had no issues connecting to it via Screen Sharing, SSH or AFP but recently all three will mysteriously fail. I know the machine is working because I stream iTunes content to my Apple TV and it's hosting a couple of web sites that it serves up just fine. The only attached peripheral is a Drobo S (2nd Gen) attached via FW 800. Drobo Dashboard and the firmware are completely up-to-date.
When it stops working, I have no alternative but to A) wait until I get home and B) force the machine off and reboot it. After a reboot, Screen Sharing, AFP and SSH all work fine for a while. It seems to conveniently fail when I'm away and need to get to it.
Note that it fails on all three protocols from outside AND inside. So this isn't a network routing or port forwarding issue. I'm a Mac IT professional with 15 years under my belt, so I think I know what I'm doing in that regard. Like I said it's worked fine for years and it's only been lately that these failures have been happening.
I can't seem to identify any rhyme or reason for this. It's a fairly clean installation with almost no 3rd party software installed on it.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Connecting new Mac mini server to Xserve RAID?

Have an Xserve RAID and was looking in getting the MacMini server. How would I connect them since the Xserve only has Fibre connections?

Tod's correct.  You currently can't, but the next revision of the Mac Mini will include ThunderBolt, and once that happens you'll be able to use a ThunderBolt-to-Fibre bridge that Promise is about to release:

  • Can't connect G4 Mac Mini, to new 2009 Mac Mini via AirPort

Well, I bought a new Mac Mini and wanted my kids to use the old one for general web surfing. The first day I hooked it up with the AirPort to the new one and everything was great, we were Home Sharing iTunes, sharing files, etc. The next day when I powered up, I could not establish a connection. My settings seem the same, and I had them both connected (kids were browsing the web etc.) once, so I figure it can be done, but now I'm lost. Help!

I have given up and connected it via Ethernet...

  • Can't connect to mac mini leopard shares or screen share

i'm having problem connecting to a mac mini that is on my network (running leopard 10.5.8) and is wired to the network via an AEBS.
previously when my MBP was also running 10.5.8 i had no problems using screen sharing and connecting to 2 shares on it using "afp://10.x.x.x/sharename", or browsing to them via finder.
i did a clean install of SL on the MBP and now even though the mac mini shows up in finder, when i select it it just sits there trying to connect and eventually the beach ball appears and fails saying it can't connect to it.
when i try to connect to the shares using command-K, again it won't connect to the shares.
if i try to connect to them using the samba share that is also configured on the mac min then is does connect to them.
i can ping the mac mini using network utility.
any ideas what the problem is? everything worked fine before i wiped and installed SL.

    HI,
Make sure screen sharing is turned on and you have set up sharing permissions on the computer whose screen you want to share.
    To set up screen sharing:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users: Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users: Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.
Click Add + at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list and click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen: Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password: Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.
It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Can I connect my Mac Mini to my Wii?

I have soem wonderful accounting software that I really wanna get onto my Mac Mini and I was wondering if I need to buy an external CD/DVD drive or if there is a way to connect my Wii to my Mac and use the drive on it to install the software??
    Thanks Everyone!

You may also wish to see if the owner of the iMac 24" has the Apple Hardware Test
that accompanied the computer when new, and the other OS X install-restore discs
since the unit still has to function as a computer before it can recycle its screen as
a second display for another Mac. It may be well to have a diagnostic performed at
an Apple Store with Genius bar, or other authorized Apple service provider before
buying it since some models of 24" had graphic issues, or developed them.
To be sure a used computer is working correctly before taking ownership is always
a good idea, especially when buying one from a non-Apple reseller where it may
not have been tested and checked for issues. You should be able to sit down at
the running computer and check it out, too, or bring along a knowledgable friend
to have them inspect and test it. And a seller should not mind if you insist on this.
And if you bought the iMac 24" already and it has no original install-restore disc kit
to contact Apple care or sales support and order a replacement original grey DVD
kit for that model (with hardware test and original applications, OS X) that may be
a wise idea; however it won't help in diagnostic testing beyond a limited method.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do you setup a Mac Mini Server online? eg: no linked screen

I was told in a Mac Store you can set up a Mac Mini Server online. So no need to have a screen connected.
There's nothing in the paperwork that comes with it to say how to do so if you can. I have an iMac setup right next to it for going online or screen sharing etc.
Have I been misinformed or am I just being slow?!
    Thanks in advance

Bit late now as I have the screen, but out of interest how do you boot in FireWire Target Disk Mode with no screen?
    Thanks
Second Mac is running 10.6.8 though.
You would have to plug a keyboard in to the Mac mini but would not need to connect a mouse or screen. You then hold down Command-T on the keyboard after turning the Mac mini on and before it boots. Keep those keys held down for about 10 seconds - that should be long enough. If you had a screen connected you would then be seeing the special FireWire symbol bouncing around the screen. This means the Mac is in FireWire Target Disk mode and is effectively a glorified external hard disk.
The fact the second Mac is itself running 10.6.8 is not important. As long as it can boot in to Lion it will be able to boot from the Mac mini which is acting as an external hard disk. On this second Mac you would plug a FireWire cable from the Mac mini. Then you would hold down the Option key and start the second Mac up. After a few seconds you should see it is in a new different mode which should list all the different bootable disks it can find, including the Mac mini which remember is acting as an external hard disk. You would then select the Mac mini disk to boot from.

  • Any help with a Time Capsule install and Mac Mini server screen share?

Installed a Time Capsule, now I can't access my mac mini server.  I see the files/folders, but cannot screen share with the mini from my macbook pro.  Any help?  Error below when trying to use the "screen share" button in Finder.  Macbook Pro and Mac Mini are using Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
Connection Failed Error: Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly.
Please help, I'm really stuck on this one!

Try removing the TC and see if the problem disappears.
Screen Sharing has a checkered histroy looking back through the posts..

There are many discussions about failing after changes in Lion.. I haven't seen the equivalent ML yet.. the TC may not be root cause, just the initiator of the problem.
It could be the BTMM associated with the TC.

  • Change SSL self-certificate email contact and default apple ID on mac mini server

    Hello,
I just received my mac mini server and started to set it up.
I bought this computer with my regular apple id account that I use with my 2 MBPs.
When installing the mac mini computer I connected my Mac Mini Server to my regular apple ID account.
The issue is that I don't want to share my MBP account details on this Mini Server computer (software update, server notification push, SSL certificate contact e-mail...) not to mess things up between all my macs.
    My question is :
I created a new apple ID for this computer with a different contact email etc.
How do I change the default ID for the whole mac mini settings ?
I already changed the user settings in the OSX user pref pane, the new mail is updated.
I already changed the icloud apple ID with the new one it's updated.
I already changed the alert notification push recipient e-mail in server.app it's updated.
BUT still, if I want to change the "self-SSL certificate" for a new one with my new apple ID account, the e-mail contact is still my old one which I bought the computer with.
How do I change that ?
Also I want to be able to update my apps on this computer without using the apple ID account I bought the mac mini with (and my 2 MBP, iphone etc), but with the new dedicated apple ID for this McMini.
Is there a software transfer trick to separate computers softwares from a mac to another?
    thanks for your precious help.
