Can't connect to modem using ethernet

I am on a power mac g5 running 10.4.11.
I just got a new modem Motorola sbg6580 & I can't log in to it via ethernet on my mac, It doesn't even see it.
I can log into it using an even older mac and a pc, but my current mac I have no luck.
I can unplug from the new modem & plug into the old modem Motorola sbg900 & it see's it fine, so it is not a bad ethernet cable or port.
I called the Motorola tech support & they are stumped too.
I also tried another new modem with the same result.
When connected to a new modem if you look under system pref, network, ethernet, it says ethernet cable unplugged.
I deleted all locations & made a new one, but still no luck.
Any help would be appreciated.

Your Solaris 10 does not see the NIC card on your system. Use below tool to see if Solaris 10 (8/07) is capable of detecting the NIC card:
http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp
If it's not supported, you'll most likely need to get one that's supported by Solaris 10.

  • Airport Time Capsule 3TB can't connect to modem via ethernet

    Hi all,
Thanks in advance for any assistance on this issue ...
I am having extreme difficulty in connecting my Airport TC to my modem via ethernet.  Ideally, I want to use it to extend the range of my wifi, as well as back up my machines.
I can't get the AP TC to add on to an existing network in initial set up as , even though the option is available, the Airport Utility (6.3.2) doesn't seem to keep it selected, and wants to create a new network.
When I create the new network, my internet connection drops out, even though the modem indicates that it is connected.  I then edit the internet connection in AU by telling it to extend the existing network (add in the SSID etc) which picks up the internet connection again, but then the Airport TC drops out, and all I get is a blinking amber light and a message saying no configured Airport Base Stations detected, continuing to search.
I have no doubt that it is something I am or am not doing.  I have soft, hard and Factory reset the TC, reset the modem, changed cables, pretty much everything my tiny brain can think of.
I have looked through the support pages and follwed thier advice, with no luck.
    Help please.

I  can't get the AP TC to add on to an existing network in initial set up as , even though the option is available, the Airport Utility (6.3.2) doesn't seem to keep it selected, and wants to create a new network.
"Add" would be used for a wireless connection....and you indicate that you are using Ethernet to connect the existing modem/router and Time Capsule together....so the correct setup would be to create a new network using the exact same wireless network name and password as your existing network.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the current modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Here, I am assuming that the TC will be located at least a room or two away from your main wireless router. If it is located any closer, there will likely be wireless interference issues between the two routers. The wired connection between the modem/router and Time Capsule must be maintained.
AirPort Utility will suggest a setup that looks somewhat like this.....except you will see a Time Capsule instead of an AirPort Express as illustrated below:
Network Name would be the name of your existing wireless networik
Base Station Name is a device name that you want to call your Time Capsule
Password is the wireless password of your existing wireless network
    Verify confirms that password
Click Next and the setup utility will auto configure things for you in a minute or two
When you see the message indicating Setup Complete, click Done and you should have a green light on the TC.

  • Connected to network but can't connect to internet using wireless

Hi, I just installed a Linksys WRT 45G and can connect my pc and my laptop to it and use the internet fine when I use ethernet cable, but if I try to use my laptop wirelessly I can't connect to the internet.  It says that I am connected to my network and that strength signal is excellent but no internet connection.  I have that bluetooth button on the front of the laptop turned on.  The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite with Centrino.  I was told that I don't need to buy a wireless card as the Centrino already does this.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I think you can try to update the firmware of the router, to check if that stops connection dropping. To update the firmware of router try this: 1. Go to www.linksys.com/download and select correct model number and version number. Download the firmware and save it on your computer. 2. Check the file it sould be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file. 3. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 4. Go to administartion tab there 5. Go to fimware update sub-tab there 6. Browse for the firmware image file and click update 7. when update completes turn off modem & router. 8. After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router. To get network key, connect your computer to one of the four ports on router using ethernet cable. 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier 2. Go to wireless tab. 3. Go to wireless security sub-tab 4. If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key Well you need to input all the wireless settings of your wireless network on Wii. To get these settings: 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 2. Goto wireless tab. Here you will get the wireless network name/SSID. Here make sure wireless SSID broadcast is enabled. 3. Now goto wireless security sub-tab and here you will get the security mode and the security key. If security type is WPA note passphrase/shared key, and if its WEP note down wep encryption level and key 1 from listed 4 keys

  • MacBook can't connect Via Aiprport OR Ethernet.

Hi, I;m currently using ethernet though my PC. But the problem is:
    1. When my Airport is connect to my X-Modem router. It has all green. But everyday it will stop with the internet but the light stays green. I have to Hard Reset it just to give it a chance to work.
    2. When i plug the x-modem into my macbook via Ethernet, and try to access its HTML admin page. It never connects, but on my pc it does it instantly.
What can i do to fix it both?
    Thanks. Mycael

You don't need to bump topics that are only an hour old. :P
What are the settings on your MB? Go in Sys Prefs -> Network and from the second drop down menu, select either Built-in Ethernet or AirPort. Have you selected DHCP in both the ethernet and AirPort settings?

  • Can't connect Time Capsule via Ethernet

I recently installed Montain Lion on a new hard drive, and want to use Migration Assistant to transfer my files and settings from a Time Machine backup on at Time Capsule. In the previous version of AirPort Utility you could change how your computer connected to a Time Capsule, and one of the options was via ethernet. In Mountain Lion this option is no longer available, and when I connect via an ethernet cable my computer doesn't seem to see the drive. Anyway to do this in Mountain Lion?

I  can't get the AP TC to add on to an existing network in initial set up as , even though the option is available, the Airport Utility (6.3.2) doesn't seem to keep it selected, and wants to create a new network.

  • [SOLVED] Can't connect to wifi if Ethernet is connected

I have a arch desktop with samba and ssh configured connected to a WiFi router/ADSL2 modem via ethernet.
I was not able to connect any of my mobile devices (phones and tablet) or my netbook (running windows 7 basic) to the WiFi router suddenly a few weeks back. The issue resolved when I removed the PC Ethernet cable from the router (when I disconnected the PC from router).
    My router is D-Link DSL 2730 U
On logging into another user (not main user) everything works fine.
Nothing changes when I stopped samba and ssh services. Infact these services which are configured as root, start before the login and work fine with the other user.
I use console without any gui to login. I startx manually after logging in. This problem does not occur on logging in. It starts only when I startx.
On using wireshark to capture traffic on the ethernet port, this line keeps repeating:
Time                      source                     destination            protocol      length(in bytes)          information
    0.007238000      192.168.1.100         224.0.0.56             UDP             1334                             Source port: 38854  Destination port: 46198
I have no idea what to do beyond this. The internet works fine when logged into main user. However other devices are not able to connect.
Please tell me how to resolve this and what is happening.

The devices can see the SSID however connecting takes too long, many times it fails and in the rare instance it connects internet does not work (its too slow so web pages say server timed out) neither does samba (this is also too slow I think,  using ES explorer in android just keeps trying to connect till it displays server offline or wlan not connected error).
I use cinnamon updated to the last version. So startx launches cinnamon.
I don't know much about media servers. I have vlc installed but not set it up as media server. I installed and used VLC remote (android app) to control the vlc player from android, however this works without a hitch in the other user. I use samba to stream videos if needed.
