Can't connect to network with wep enabled
I'm having problems connecting my mbp to my wireless network. It connects fine with no security enabled but when security is enabled I type in the wep key and I get a message saying there was an error conecting.
I have read loads of other posts and it seems a lot of people have managed to sort this problem by putting a '$' in front of the wep key when trying to connect. This is not working for me.
Is anyone in the same boat?
Does anyone know how to get around this?
See if any of this helps:

Be sure you have the latest Airport software installed on your computer. Depending upon the particular router you are using you may need a firmware update for the router (if it's third-party or an older Apple Base Station that may need a firmware update.)

Can't connect to Internet since WEP enabled
I'm using an Airport card in my iMac to connect to a 3rd party base station. It worked fine until I WEP enabled my router. My iMac's OS is at 9.2.2 and the Airport software is at 2.0.4. It accepts my password and appears to be connected to the network, but the Status continues to display "Status not available." What am I missing?
You probably didn't enter the WEP key into the Mac in a format compatible to both the Mac and your router.
The best thing to do is (a) enter the WEP key into your router as a 10- or 26-digit hexadecimal format WEP key, then (b) enter the same key on your Mac and prefacing it with the $ character.

[solved] Can't connect to network with 64-bit kernel
On 64-bit Arch Linux, I can't get any network access. On 32-bit Arch Linux, I can connect to my router with an ethernet cable or a wireless card using dhcpcd or networkmanager.
In 64-bit, I have tried
- Upgrading my kernel from 3.3.8 to 3.4.2 from the testing repos
- Getting networkmanager-git from AUR
- Using the r8168 driver for my ethernet card (which is actually exactly the same one as the one from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … k_messages )
But I haven't been able to get "dhcpcd eth0" to tell me anything but
dhcpcd[677]: eth0: sending IPv6 Router Solicitation
dhcpcd[677]: eth0: broadcasting for a lease
dhcpcd[677]: eth0: sending IPv6 Router Solicitation
dhcpcd[677]: eth0: sending IPv6 Router Solicitation
dhcpcd[677]: eth0: sending IPv6 Router Solicitation
dhcpcd[677]: eth0: no IPv6 Routers available
while "dmesg | tail" fills with
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
My rc.conf has the correct settings for dhcp:
interface=eth0
address=
netmask=
broadcast=
gateway=
I can get whatever 64-bit packages I need to get the internet to work in 64-bit linux by downloading them in 32-bit linux and then upgrading to 64-bit linux.
My goal is to get networking to work on 64-bit linux through either eth0 or wlan0 (eventually I'll need wlan0 but right now neither works, so if one starts working, the other probably will), or for someone to say "It's impossible dude, go download opensuse and see if you get a different damning error over there".
Happy trails,
jc

Yep.

Yes. Networking doesn't work on the 64-bit install disk either though, which obviously doesn't share its /etc with anything.

New MacBook with Lion can't connect my WiFi with WEP 128bits
Well, Hi Apple's users !
I've received my brand new Mac Book Pro 2012 last week. It was installed with last version of OSX Lion.
At work, not problem to connect to WiFi crypted in WPA Enterprise.
At home, i absolutly can't connect to my personnal WiFi crypted in WEP 128bits and with a MAC Address filtrer. If I remove the WEP protection, then it works well. If i remove only Mac Address filtrer, it still not work.
I don't receive any error message as if the password was wrong. I've both tested the hexadecimal code and the passphrase... still get the "?" and no connexion.
I've read a lot of probleme exist on this Lion version with WiFi...
I could add that all my other device as : iPad 2, iMac, PC, Smartphone, DS, PS3 and Wii works correctly !

Can't connect to network with mac, only pc.
I have a powerbook and have just installed an airport extreme card. I do not have my own internet connection and intend to 'borrow' connections that I pick up.
In the past I have used a friend's PC laptop &belkin wireless adapter to connect to networks accidentally found in both his house and mine. This was no problem whatsoever and a connection without passwords etc was possible in both.
When I try to connect my powerbook the following happens:
1. In his house: I can connect to an open apple network but the connection is unbearably slow while I can work on his computer from the same point relatively easily.
2. In my house: When I try to connect I get 'error in connection to linksys' or similar (maybe even get asked for passwords).
I have very limited knowledge of these things and have no idea what it means or what the problem is.
If anyone can tell me why the connection always seems to be slow or unachievable on my powerbook (when an old PC laptop succeeds) I'd be most grateful. It could be as simple as the owners of those wireless networks didn''t want other people using their networks and have added a layer of security.
One you may also want to have a look at these recent cases involving using other people's wireless networks.

Can't connect to network with Airport Extreme
I have just purchased and installed an Airport Extreme card (firmware version 405.1) into my eMac (with ATI graphics). The card appears in System Profiler, and I have attached the antenna wire. However, it cannot see my network (the only network in range). My iPhone can see the network when it is in the same location (as can a few Windows devices).
I have tried turning off encyption, to no avail. I believe my router is broadcasting on a frequency my card can recieve.
I have also tried resetting my SystemConfiguration folder. What else should I try? Thanks again for the suggestions.
I had tried the router on 1 and 6, just tried it on 11 as well. No joy.
It is broadcasting the SSID.
MAC filtering isn't on.
...and then I put it back to channel 1, and now it's working!
It's working now, and there doesn't seem to be any settings that are different to when I started.
The signal is increadibly low though. When I put the access point antenna literally in the drivebay, I get three bars (out of four). A meter away I get 2 or 1 and everything times out.
It appears that something is wrong with the antenna wire, or the connection to it. This was probably an important factor all along. -
I can't connect to network with my router
I am using the model WRT54G, and it is starting to refuse connections... Then i went to "Status -> Router" (in 192.168.1.1) and all camp fields are blank, with IP's 0.0.0.0. I upgraded my firmware and the problem stays at same...
Can anyone help me?
ThanksMessage Edited by The_Gladiator on 12-10-200610:39 AMI had the same issue before I bought my new PC. I could not connect to the internet with my new PC wired to the router but could connected to the modem. I figured out the way to do it was clone the MAC address of the PC I used to setup the internet which was no longer wired. I disable Clone MAC and I would lose internet. Get nothing but 0.0.0.0 in the status page. I did a hard reset on the modem and disabled Clone MAC in the router. Powered everything off and waited about a minute. Powered everything back up and was in business. Had internet and didnt have to clone the MAC.
Now I dont know if this will work for you but it did for me.
If you have a modem with battery backup you need to unplug the power cord then remove the battery to truely powercycle it. (Words from Comcast) -
Can't connect to network with hardwired desktop
I have a network set up in my house with a wireless router. However, my desktop (MS Vista Enterprise) is and always has been hardwired to the router. Out of the blue the desktop no longer recognizes the network and cannot connect or get online. All other wireless devices work fine. I have tried rebooting the computer, rebooting the router, completing a system restore, none of which have helped. I do notice that in Device Manager that Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #3 is "not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required (Code 31)." When I troubleshoot the problem it tells me that Windows is looking for and cannot find a wireless adapter (of which I've never had one).
Any idea what may have gone wrong and/or what I need to do to correct it? I'm out of ideas.Hello Lena,
Thank you for posting!
Based on my experience, Microsoft ISATAP with error code 31 is an ignorable issue. For more information, please refer to the following KB article:
(KB932520) On a Windows Vista-based computer, the Microsoft ISATAP adapter appears with a yellow exclamation mark next to it in Device Manager, and you also receive an error message
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932520
In such a case, I suspect this problem to be caused by network adapter missing or corrupt. Please firstly reinstall the driver for your wireless network adapter. Then try to reinstall Microsoft ISATAP using following steps:
In Device Manger, right-click the item of Microsoft ISATAP and select Uninstall.
Still in Device Manager, click Action and select Add legacy hardware.
Click Next, and select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), click Next.
Select Network Adapters and click Next.
Select Microsoft in left panel and Microsoft ISATAP Adapter in the right panel.
Click Next and finish the remaining wizard.
Hope it helps!

ARP over Computer-to-Computer Network with WEP?
Howdy All,
I have two Macs running OSX 10.4.8. I want to connect them with a Computer-to-Computer Airport network (not an Airport Base Station) with static IP routing between them, but NOT using Internet Sharing.
If I setup the Computer-to-Computer networking using WEP then ARP packets don't seem to get through (across the wireless). If I recreate the Computer-to-Computer networking without the WEP then the connection works fine.
When I setup a Computer-to-Computer networking in Airport does it filter ARP packets for some reason (or perhaps it doesn't need them with Internet Sharing)? Can I create a computer to computer network some other way?
I don't want to use Internet Sharing because of the NAT it creates.
Thanks in advance for any advice / suggestions.
Cheers,
Ashley.

mrhatken at mac dot com emailHi BDAqua,
Thanks for your post. Unfortunately, I don't believe I explained things clearly. I am trying to do IP routing from one machine to the other without using the NAT that Internet Sharing would give me.
I can get it to work fine when I have a computer-to-computer network without WEP security, e.g. I can ping each machine from the other. However, if I recreate the c-to-c wireless network with WEP it doesn't work.
A tcpdump suggests that the ARP packets aren't getting through the computer-to-computer network when WEP is on. Here is a portion of the output from tcpdump:
18:46:43.826657 arp who-has 192.168.49.7 tell 192.168.49.4

18:46:48.075014 arp who-has 192.168.49.7 tell 192.168.49.4
18:46:57.361050 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 113
18:46:59.448638 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 129
18:47:02.463678 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 94
18:47:03.528851 IP 192.168.49.4.ipp > 192.168.49.255.ipp: UDP, length: 146
Of course, both machines have the same WEP password etc. It may be something to do with how Apple creates the c-to-c wireless network when WEP is used, I don't know.
Hopefully that makes it clearer. BTW, Personal Filesharing was on and the Firewall was off in both cases.
Cheers,
Ashley.

B has IP address 192.168.49.7 with router 192.168.49.4
B has a static route 192.168.49 -interface en1
B has IP forwarding on
B has a wired network connection to a printer ...
netstat -nr shows similar (but reversed, i.e. 4 and 7) for en1.
This is NOT using "Internet Sharing" (i.e. it is off). I don't want the NAT that comes with that!
System preferences shows both machines are connected to the "Computer-to-Computer" network W.
Pinging the other machine from either side I get:
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: Host is down
ping: sendto: No route to host
Again, if I create the network without WEP security with the same configuration, the pings work fine.

Can't connect to hotspot with my iPad, picks it up but unable to connect. Any sugestions?
When Access Connections fails to connect it asks if I want to configure the network and there's a bunch of settings. Connection type: infrastructure or Adhoc, Wireless security type "use static WEP keys", "Use Wi-Fi protected Access - Pre Shared Key (WPA-PSK)" - I choose it and under Properties there's more options. Access point authentication, WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK; I've tried it both ways. Data encryption: TKIP or AES, I've been using TKIP. Under Pre-Shared Key, there's the only box I see to enter a password, so I enter the password there.
Chances are pretty good that the problem is the network configuration of your PC and not the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). What configuration options you choose will depend on how you set up the AEBS's wireless network, but the following can be used as a guideline:
o Connection Type: Infrastructure
o Wireless Security Type:
AirPort Setting = PC Setting
o WEP = WEP
o WPA Personal = WPA-PSK w/TKIP
o WPA2 Personal = WPA-PSK w/AES -

Turn router off then on Try turning your wireless router off then back on.
Change or turn off wireless security You may want to try toggling the settings on your wireless router, switching from WPA to WEP or vice versa, or, as a last resort, turning wireless security off altogether. For AirPort routers, this can be accomplished with the AirPort Admin Utility. For other routers, this can usually be accomplished by accessing the router’s configuration page — open a browser and enter the address 192.168.1.1.
Reset network settings on iPad. On your iPad, open Settings, then navigate to “General” in the left-hand pane. Scroll down and tap Reset, then select “Reset Network Settings.” This will delete any stored WiFi passwords and other information, but may result in a more stable connection.
Adjust brightness upward. Oddly, a number of users have found that they can resolve this issue by simply adjusting the iPad’s brightness level upward and off the lowest setting. To do this, tap Settings, then select “Brightness & Wallpaper” from the left-hand pane. Slide the brightness bar upward, then wait 1-2 minutes and check for an improvement in signal strength. Speculation holds that a power delivery issue associated with the screen brightness affects Wi-Fi.
Change thresholds in router settings. Access your routers configuration screen (for most routers, open a browser and enter the address 192.168.1.1), then change the fragmentation threshold and the CTS/RTS threshold as described here. Some users have found success with the settings Fragmentation= 2048, RTS = 512.
Change 802.11 spec on router. Try changing your router’s wireless spec mode from B, G and N to G only or vice versa. For AirPort routers, this can be accomplished with the AirPort Admin Utility. For other routers, this can usually be accomplished by accessing the router’s configuration page — open a browser and enter the address 192.168.1.1.
Switch routers. Although a far-from-ideal solution, some users have found success with switching to a different wireless router.
Turn off “Ask to Join Networks.” To do so, tap Settings on your iPad, then select “Wi-Fi” from the left-hand pane. Slide “Ask to Join Networks” to off. Speculation holds that leaving this option on causes the iPad to constantly seek networks, resulting in some type of interference with the network to which it is connected.
Forget network then rejoin. Tap Settings on your iPad, then select Wi-Fi from the left-hand pane. Choose the network with which you are experiencing difficulty, then select “Forget this network.” Go back to the previous screen and rejoin the network.
Turn off Bluetooth. Some users report that, perhaps due to interference issues, turning off Bluetooth can boost Wi-Fi signal strength. To do so, tap Settings then tap General in the left-hand pane. Tap Bluetooth in the right-hand pane, then slide to off. -
Can I extend a network with an AirPort Extreme Base Station Rather than with an Express?
Topic title pretty well sums up the question.
I have a TimeCapsule Base Station with two Expresses for extending the network through the house.
We're doing a 3 room addition, and there is not a convenient place to put an Express in a wall outlet in the middle room of the addition, but there's a perfect place to put an Extreme on top of a piece of furniture.
So, can the Extreme act as an "extender" only, in lieu of using an Express?pcbjr wrote:

Hiya.
You can absolutely extend a network with an Extreme. I've got a 5th gen. Extreme extending a network created with a 3rd gen. Time Capsule. On the Extreme, you'll have the option to allow (or not) WiFi clients. I recommend having all units updated to the current firmware (7.6.1 as of this writing). Note that extending doesn't work in daisy-chain fashion, meaning that your Expresses or Extremes will each connect to and extend from the TC. As such, you'll want the TC to be in as central a location as possible to offer the best coverage.
