Can't connect to time machine

My 2008 iMac (Intel) recently crashed and the factory installed HD was the culprit.  Got a new HD and reloaded all my software.  I'm having a problem connecting to my 1TB Time Machine.  It performed a back up and now I can't see the drive.  I've got the drive etherneted (same set up as before the crash).  I see the drive in Finder, but it refuses to connect.  I get the following error message (I click on the time machine and it tells me connection failed. I try the Connect As... button and get this message)
"Connection failed.
There was an erro connecting to the server [server name]. Check the server name or IP address, and try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."
The time machine has more than just back ups, I was using it before as a network drive, but my iMac was the only one I was ever sucessful in connecting to the drive via ethernet.
Any help on troubleshooting would be greatly apprecated, since data from before the crash is on the drive I'd like to restore.

Welcome to the discussions!
+Airport utility does not see the TC+
+ethernet cable direct to TC from Macbook and still can't see the TC+
If you have connected an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC and have restarted both your computer and TC and still cannot connect, the next step would be perform a Factory Default Reset on the TC as follows:
Power down the TC and let it rest for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
Now test to see if AirPort Utility can "see" the TC.
If so, you will need to reconfigure the device as you did originally. You can use either the guided setup by clicking "Continue" or you can use Manual Setup if you prefer that method.
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times, and AirPort Utility is still unable to locate the TC, it is time to call Apple for repairs or a replacement device.

  • Can't connect to Time Machine after installing Mavericks.

Both green lights on in Airport Utility but can't connect - says check IP address or contact administrator (I am the administrator), have done a hard rest and shut down but still unable to connect. Have shut down the Mac - restarted and still back up failed. Green light on the Time Maching (not flashing), green light on internet, internet via Wifi and working fine - good signal - no interruptions or drop-outs, just can't get the computer to connect to the time machine - even thought it appears to be OK in Aprpirt Utility? I'm stuck.
    Can anyone help me?

I am having a similar problem - when I updated to Mavericks the install seemed to go OK until the last minute, then it literally hung for hours. I decided to re-boot the computer.  From there, it seemed like the Mavericks install was a "clean" install, and it was like setting up a brand new computer.  All of my programs were kept, but it lost all of my files from finder, as well as all my e-mails, etc.  When I tried to backup from Time Machine, none of the buttons seem to work, and I can't get it to work.  Also, before the install my 500 GB Time Machine drive was showing almost full, now it shows about 300 MB full.  I also tried to migrate the files from the Time Machine drive to the iMac, still with no luck.
Good thing I had migrated my iTunes and photos to other external drives, and I was able get those back. Losing 500 MB of photos probably would have given me a heart attack.
    Any suggestions?

  • Normal user can't connect to Time Machine drive on another machine

Hi guys, get the feeling I've missed something simple…
    1. Physically attached big external drive to 'server' machine
    2. Set up Time Machine to use external drive both on server and from my laptop (by mounting on desktop)
    Everything happy.
    3. On server did chgrp for the external drive to a group which user J is in
J can see (and write to) the drive when logged into server, but not when logging into server from her laptop. I can see drive from her laptop but only when attaching to server as me.
    4. Undid 3 and tried adding her username to drive instead via Get Info. Same deal.
So I'm the only remote user which can see the drive. What did I miss?
    All machines 10.6.1
    Cheers

Thanks James. I've set up File Sharing on the destination as you say. On the source I can only see the destination when connecting as my user ID, not as a different account—despite setting up permissions for this.
Hmm. I've not done TM backups this way, but you might try to see if it's sensitive to names this way, as it often is with Time Capsules and drives attached to Airport Extremes.
Start with the Computer name (System Preferences > Sharing). Keep it short, use only numbers and letters -- no spaces, punctuation, or special characters. Then click Edit and make the corresponding change to the Local Hostname. This makes no sense, of course, but often works anyhow!

  • Can not connect to Time Machine back up file after restore

After receiving my G5 iMac back from the Apple Store I had to restore from my Time Machine backup (they had to erase the hard drive). The backup seemed to go fine until it hit the "Network settings." It froze there for a couple of hours. Everything else seemed fine. I quit the back up and restarted my iMac and it seems to be doing fine. I did notice that some of my shareware programs need to have their keycodes re-entered and when I open up a program that has not run since being restored I get that warning window telling me that it is opening an application for the first time.
But here is the main issue...Time Machine doesn't recognize the previous back up file. I do not want erase the current file to start over...just in case something didn't get properly restored. I much rather just have Time Machine recognize the existing file...anyway of doing that? I do not have enough room on my external hard drive to have 2 backup files.
    Thanks...Lenny

  • I can't connect to time machine

after a restart of my time machine it doesnt start any wifi. when i connect thru rj45-cable i cant get in contact.
    Tips anyone?

I am not sure I understand.
The Time Machine, has nothing to do with starting wifi.. do you mean Time Capsule??
And you seem to be saying there is no connection by wifi and no connection by ethernet.
    What computer is it?
What firmware is the TC running? It is very old.. when you open Airport Utility on the computer is it showing up??
If it does, reset TM and start over.
    See A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If you still cannot find the TC, factory reset the TC and give it new names, short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
If you need to manually mount the hard disk in the computer.. but after a reset it should work.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • HT201250 Can I copy a time machine backup from one mac to another?

I have two Mac Book Pros that I use for work - I have one at home and one at work. I'd like to copy the contents and setup from my work Mac to my home Mac using a time machine backup, and then continue to use the time machine backup back at work. I.e. the time machine would only be used with the home Mac to copy over the contents and setup of my work Mac.
Can I just do a straight time machine back up in my 2nd (home) mac, or will this override the back up I have from the 1st (work) machine?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Note that you can restore a Time Machine backup on all the Macs you want, always that the Mac uses the same or a newer OS X version than the one that had the Mac you used to make this backup.
Also, you can back up different computers to the same Time Machine drive. In this case, Time Machine will create different folders in your Time Machine drive for each computer, so one Mac backup won't conflict with the other computer backup.
To restore a backup, use Migration Assistant. Just connect the Time Machine drive, open Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps to restore the backup onto the computer

I want to use the airprint, but my printer does not have that utility. I read in another apple support, that I could use a computer as an airport.
Can I use my Time Machine as an airport for the airprint, between my Ipad and my printer?

No. Time Machine is just backup software. If you have a networkable printer that you can connect to the computer then you could possibly print to it wirelessly via your network if you enable printer sharing in your router.

  • Can I have 2 Time Machines for 2 backups?

I have an external hard drive that I use for my time machine. Recently I've been having some problems with my iMac that are hard drive related. I wasn't able to repair using disk utility and had to erase and reinstall Snow Leopard and then transfer everything back from time machine.
After this I realize just how fragile this all is. I have many photos and videos of my family from years ago and was relieved that I had everything backed up. Hard drives are so inexpensive these days, I feel it may be wise to have another backup in the unlikely event both hard drives were to have problems at the same time.
Can I have two Time Machines? If not, what are my options?
Thanks for any suggestions on this topic.

Yes, but not simultaneously. You can switch the desired backup drive using TM preferences, but TM cannot backup to two drives concurrently. However, I would suggest not using TM for your second backup. Instead consider making a bootable clone on the second drive. You can then use a third-party backup utility to incrementally update the clone. Because this software is running independently of TM you can have both a TM backup and a third-party backup. With TM backing up hourly you can set the second backup schedule to backup weekly and/or monthly.
If something does go amiss with your main system drive, then you can boot from your clone in order to restore function to the main drive.
To avoid using up space on the TM drive be sure you add your second backup drive to the TM Exclude list.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire or USB drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. (Note: Most PPC Macs cannot be booted from a USB drive.) You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Can I use my time machine backup to migrate my files to macbook pro retina from my macbook pro 15 inch?

I'm using a macbook pro 15 inch mid 2011 running on mountain lion.
I have a complete backup of my files on time machine.  If I get a macbook retina, whats the best way ti migrate?
Can I use my time machine to restore to the new retina mac?
    Thanks

I'd just use the Time Machine restore function when setting up your new machine. If you don't have the TB>FW adapter, how do you plan to connect to your external drive with your TM backup? You may have to resort to Migration Assistant - but it would be helpful if you had the TB>Ethernet adapter so that you could hardwire both machines to your router - going wireless is going to take a long, long time. If your external has a USB port, you could use that for a TM restore...

  • Can people see my Time Machine back ups?

If people are connected to my wireless network, are they able to access the contents of what is in my Time Machine drive? I know there is no way to actually encrypt or password protect it, so I am worried about people being able to see my personal information. Thanks!

Can people see my Time Machine backups?
No, not unless they are logged on as you from your Mac.....or they go through a really convoluted process that would still require that they know the main admin password of your Mac.
