Can't Connect Via Ethernet on new MacBook Pro

Hello,
I'm running into a frustrating problem and hoping someone can help.
I have a new MacBook Pro that won't connect via Ethernet. My old computer (Powerbook G4) with the same settings works flawlessly.
Details: under Network Settings I have Automatic/Using DHCP. When I click on Assist Me>Diagnostics, I get green lights all the way down (Built-In Ethernet, Network Settings, ISP, Internet, Server). The Diagnostics tool therefore proudly announces that my Internet connection is working correctly.
When I open Safari, however, it won't open any page. Using Ping I also get no responses.
When I plug the exact same ethernet cable into my Powerbook G4, everything works flawlessly. The only difference is that the IP address ends in .25 instead of .30 (I assume that's from the router assigning different IP addresses to the two computers.)
On another forum i read about someone having a problem with a long/lossy ethernet cable, but I just took my computer to the router and tried with a 2-foot ethernet cable. Same situation.
Help!
Thanks

i rebooted the firewall and it worked.

No.  You can have one or the other.  How the printer connects does not have to match how the computers connect.

I can´t download skype to my new macbook pro, I can´t find it in the App Store, do you know why?

There are a number of developers who have chosen for various reasons not to offer their software through the Mac App Store, so don't assume that if an application is not in the App Store that the application is not available. It may well be available directly from the developer or some other download site. MacUpdate is a good resource for looking for applications:

  • Can you put windows on a new macbook pro

can you  put windows on a new macbook pro ? yes or no, which notebook can i put windows on if not the macbook pro?

WIndows 7 is the only Windows OS supported by the new Macs.
You usually use Boot Camp Assistant to partition the drive and install the Windows product on the Mac.
This creates a system where you boot into Mac OSX OR Windows.
    see more at http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
There are programs such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion that can create a Virtual Machine within Mac OSX - giving you access to both Operating Systems at once. You may get slight performance issues as you would be essentially running two Operating Systems at once.

  • Powerbook G4 can't connect via ethernet but connects via airport

We have a small office network connected to an Efficient Networks DSL router that's managed by our isp. The router has 4 ports and a linksys 8 port switch is connected to one of those ports. Another D-Link wireless router/switch is connected to another port.
2 i-macs connect without problem via ethernet cable. They are set to DHCP and get 192.xx private addresses. Both run 10.4.5. Another older imac running 9.2.2. also has no problems.
I recently purchased a powerbook G4 and it will not connect via ethernet to the Efficient networks router. At first it was connected to the linksys, so decided to connect it direct to the Efficient Networks router. With DHCP, it acquires a 169. internet address which is self generated (i.e. no real connection). I tried to give it a static private address (talking to the isp provider). They could see the powerbook but saw all zero's (presumable mac address). By the way the Powerbook works perfectly at home connected via ethernet cable to a D-Link router connected to a cable modem so it's not a physical problem. I even checked the ethernet cable I used in the office with another computer - no problem.
When I switch to airport in the office, the powerbook connects to the network and the internet. I get some strange warning messages showing the server's and the router's private ip addresses. I click ok, and the powerbook finds an unassigned private ip address. It's the only way it will work, but it causes problems, because I can't connect to one of the network printers. Speed also isn't great.
Can anyone give me advise how to proceed. I am no expert on this stuff so keep it as simple as possible.
    Tks

    Tim,
Thanks for your help. Here's what I've done before reading your e-mail. The D-Link DI-524 wireless router is connected to the Effiicent Neworks DSL router as you mentioned. One ethernet port of the EFF.Net. router is connected to the WAN port of the DI-514.
Because I have a D-Link router at home which works flawlessly with my powerbook, I decided to connect the ethernet cable of the powerbook to the D-Link which has 4 ethernet ports. Lo and behold, the powerbook acquired a private ip address and connected to the LAN and internet!
When I connected the powerbook direct to the Efficient Networks router, it could not communicate. I believe that there must be some software incompatibility between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router. By connecting to the D-Link, the D-Link assigned an ip address to the powerbook, and it could connect to the server, lan, etc..
Only problem is that I have a Brother network printer that cannot connect to the powerbook. My powerbook cannot find it on the network. Because there is a linksys switch connected to the efficient networks router's third ethernet port, maybe as you said, going through the D-Link via DHCP (when the Linksys is also acting as a DHCP server, might cause this type of problem. What do you think?
As a final note, other imac G5's connected to the linksys switch (which then connects to the Efficient Network's router) have no problem connecting to the lan or internet and have no problem connecting to any of the printers. When I put the powerbook on that switch, I could not connect to the internet - i.e. whether connecting via the lynksys switch or direct with the efficient networks router - same results: no internet connection whether manually or via DHCP.
So the imac G5 has no problem with the efficient networks router but the powerbook G4 hits a brick wall. The G4 likes the D-Link router. I am concerned (and I will have to check this) that if I turn off the dhcp server feature from the D-Link, that whatever software issue crops up between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router, will rise up again, because the D-Link will act like a simple switch (just like my linksys switch), and we'll be back to square zero. In any case, no harm in trying. This may be the cause of the Powerbook not seeing that Brother printer (even though it sees another printer and other macs).
Having spent hours reading about network problems, I think it's safe to say that macs have problems with certain routers. Why a G5 works and a powerbook G4 doesn't is beyond me, but clearly software must play a role.

  • IBook G4 Can't connect via Ethernet?

While we were away lightning took out several devices. Among them was the Airport Extreme Base Station and the cable modem. The modem has been replaced. I have an iMacG5 and an iBookG4 both running 10.4.11. The iMac can establish a connection via Ethernet (all this happened yesterday so I have yet to replace the Airport). The laptop apparently won't accept an IP address from the router/modem and won't connect to the internet.
I did see a message saying that my network settings had been changed by another application but don't know if this figures in the mix.
Anyone have any ideas how I ought to approach getting the iBook back online?

I think you ran across the security update bug in 10.4.11 the deals with an ethernet connection. Here is the workaround:

  • Can't connect via ethernet after iBook wakes up from sleep

I'm running 10.4.0 on a 1.33 GHz G4 iBook. Since buying the computer in 2005, I've been connecting to the internet in various locations via AirPort, though I have hooked my iBook up to ethernet connections in the past and had no problems.
Recently I moved to a university where I must connect via ethernet, as the wireless network doesn't extend to the areas where I do most of my work. I bought a new cable. Much of the time, my connection is fine. But frequently I am unable to connect to the internet at all via ethernet, and I've noticed that it's always after I've woken the computer up from sleep. I've tried various ridiculous "kick the car and maybe it will start" techniques like unplugging the cable at both ends and waiting, restarting five or six times in a row, etc., and it starts connecting eventually, but I have NO idea why or why not. When I check my network preferences, I get the message "Built-in Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address [xxx.xxx.x.xxx]. You are connected to the Internet via Built-In Ethernet." But I'm not. What's going on here?

Sorry, meant to indicate an IP address without giving the exact numbers, and it came up as an HTTP address. My network connections system preference panel indicates a normal IP address. (And it's not self-assigned.)

  • Self-assigned IP !!! Can't connect via Ethernet

    Hi all,
    This is my problem:
    - Now every time I connect my MBP (running 10.6.4) to my hall's network (staying on campus, in uni) it appears as "Self-assigned IP" and cannot connect to the internet for the Ethernet. It suddenly happened a few days ago and I have no clue what caused that
    - Airport's working well
    - Using Windows on Parallels and can still connect to the Internet despite that the Mac OS X does not at the same time, my friends' laptops have no problems as well
    - Tried taking the IP, subnet mask, router( I suppose in Windows it is called Gateway ) details and typing in manually for the Ethernet settings on OSX but still cannot connect to the Internet. The status is Connected and "Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 137.xxx.xx.xx."
    - When I bring my laptop to a different place and connect via Ethernet, it works well, too, I just leave the setting to be "Using DHCP"
I've seen that lots of people have met this issue, also loads of advices have been given:
    - reset the router ... --> I'm connecting to the hall's network, so that's impossible for me to do
    - sudo ipfw list , sudo ipfw flush .. --> nothing changed afterwards
    - someone suggested uninstalling any VMware --> tried uninstalling parallels desktop and the problem's still there
    - untick the "Use Passive FTP Mode" for ethernet --> no difference
    - Security settings ,Firewall --> firewall was even off when the issue 1st appeared
So ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEAAASSSSSSSSSEE !!!! I'm sick of having to turn to Windows just to access the internet
    Thanks in advance

Apart from this one "*4) In the folder /Library/Preferences (not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.* " , I've tried all the other ways suggested but didn't work.
I'm wondering what it means by "move" here :? Is that "copying and then delete the original" :??
A "move" operation is normally considered equivalent to (although more efficient) than "copying and delete the original". Just drag the folder out of its original folder and onto the Desktop, which will make it be no longer in its original folder.
I've seen others post advice about moving out specific files in that folder. That probably works just as well if not better (as it leaves in place other files not involved in networking), but I haven't spent the time to determine just which files should be moved.

  • Connect broken ibook to new macbook pro for data recovery

Greetings all. I'm a long time mac user but this is my first post on the forums. Hope you folks can help me out.
I want to transfer information from my old ibook g4 (running OS 10.5.?) to my new MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.3). The catch is the ibook's monitor is not working, but the hard drive is. Also I don't have a firewire cable to connect the 2 computes or (option 2) a cable that would allow me to connect the ibook to an external monitor. In order to get either of those cables I will have to find them online as the closest store is 2.5 hours away.
As far as I can tell the ibook's wireless is still working but I don't think sharing is turned on...
Can any of you think of a way I could make a wireless network btw the computers? I know the ibooks passwords etc...is there any way I can get in to the ibook and turn sharing on without having use of its monitor?
Any ideas would be really helpful. Mac support said there is no way...but common I've done amazing things with my Mac there must be a way!
Here's how this all came about:
Last Monday my husband was using my sacred ibook G4, which has given me 6 years of flawless service and was continuing to work perfect until this day. He picked it up to move it to the living room and accidentally dropped it. It landed, open and running, on one of it's hinges, instantly smashing it.
After taking the ibook apart and assessing the damage we decided the best option was replacement hence my brand new Macbook pro.
There is no visible damage to the ibooks lcd screen, but somewhere in the components is/are lose connections preventing the monitor from working. The frame on the side where the power cable plugs in, at the monitors hinge, broke and damaged a green wire connected to the screen.
Thanks for your consideration folks. I'd sure like to get the info off the ibook. PS my husband feels terrible about what happened but on the plus side hello new laptop!

    bug,
Apparently the transfer stopped part way through.
Hmm that doesn't make a lot of sense unless....
on the now exposed area, touches the frame the external monitor will stop working.
So you must absolutely prevent that from happening..
the external monitor will stop working.
You're probably dragging the graphics chip down when that happens or causing a logic board power spike (probably negative) that crashes that chip or worse the CPU. What can happen if that keeps on is that a tiny fuse that's about a 1/32" wide and 1/8" long can blow on the logic board. It's in the inverter driver circuit. That will require someone to perform a microsolder repair. The other thing that could happen is that the inverter driver could blow up and that would be fatal afa the internal display is concerned.
OK so I'm a little confused here:
able to confirm that when plugged into a monitor the computer still works.
.. the ibook monitor still powers up do you think it may be possible to repair the current monitor?..Computer starts up fine, monitor powers up as well but does not display any images other than blue blank screen
So the computer was working and now it's not?
I think you should stop trying to run the computer with that inverter cable damaged. If you can't affect a repair you should probably unplug the inverter cable. The bottom would have to come off as well as the lower shield.
I happen to have a 14" 1.42 GHz iBook taken apart and can send you pictures of the position of that cable's socket if you email me. (I'm attempting a PMU swap with this 1.42).
I'd like to get my info back
So with that cable disconnected you'd need to see if the iBook will go into target mode.
If not then I'd disconnect the LVDS cable and try it w/ the external monitor. Now that's going to require that the upper case come off as well as the upper shield. There are many gottchas to doing this, the worst of which is damaging the power button socket on the logic board.
Ultimately you might have to pull the hard drive and use an external case/USB adapter to recover that info.
they ran into problems during the transfer but they couldn't explain what happened
    "they" seem a bit inept!

  • Connecting old imac to new macbook pro

I have a five year old imac that I use for photoshop work.  My new macbook pro is so much faster processing big files, I can see the Imac's days are numbered.  Can I use the monitor from the imac with the new Macbook?  How would I connect the two?
    Thanks,

When I bought my new MacBook Pro, the sales person showed me how to do the V-card method that you suggested. I tried it at home, and it worked. I have been worrying for years about the best way to do this, so was very relieved to find such a simple method. David Pogue in the Tiger Missing Manual also mentioned another tip which I used: he said to select all the address entries you want to transfer (in my case it was all of them) and then just drag the whole lot out onto the desktop. A V-card icon appeared that said: "Name of Person plus 344 others". I then copied that to a flash drive and then onto the new computer desktop. I then dragged it into the Address Book window. As you said it was done in a matter of seconds. Thank you so much!

  • Can´t access Facebook on my new MacBook Pro

Hello. Yesterday I got a new MacBook Pro. First, I updated it to OS X 10.7.5 and everything works just fine, except that I can´t load Facebook, safari shows a message saying it can´t connect to server. I tried installing other browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox but the same thing happens. The problem also happens with Twitter, every other website loads correctly.
I searched for Facebook in Google, and clicked on the first result which was Facebook in Spanish. https://es-es.facebook.com/ The log in page showed correctly. Then I tried typing my user name and password and clicking enter to log in and it stops working. The same message apears (safari can´t connect to server) with this url adress https://www.facebook.com/login.php?login_attempt=1.
Maybe this has to do with the fact that my MacBook is configurated in Spanish since I live in Latin America. I changed my language to English and the same thing happened but with Facebook from UK with the adress https://en-gb.facebook.com/ I still couldn´t log in.
I think it could be a DNS issue, but I don´t know how to fix it.
I would appreciate any type of help since I´m really excited with this new MacBook and I would really like to solve this problem. Thank you!!

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.
