Can't connect when on campus

I have no problem with my secure wireless network at home. Likewise no issues connecting to a friend's wireless at their home. However, when I take it to school it cannot connect. My macbook pro has no problems at school, nor does my ipod touch. I have to log into their network using my credentials using the notebook or touch, and I get the window asking for my credentials on the ipad, but when I enter them and click OK nothing happens. There's not even a busy icon of any kind. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Jennifer

Hi jmweber,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Ok Lets talk about the home situation and work outwards from there.
You get what is called Public IP from your ISP.
Your modem or a router can then divide this to your computers by creating your Private LAN by issuing IP numbers itself.
NAT (Network Address Translation) is the software that achieves this in the modem or router.
Mostly in domestic devices this really kicks in on the ports above the 1024 threshold.
This tends to mean that Web browsing on port 80 is allowed for everyone (computer) that is connected to the modem.
On-line games plus other apps like Instant Messengers use ports above this threshold and need the ports opened/allowed
On Commercial devices it is possible to do NAT down to the lowest port numbers.
OK Now some ways of opening or allowing the ports above 1024 use NAT more than others due to the way the Addressing info is added to the packets.
Port Forwarding and Port Triggering both rely on NAT (DMZ is an extreme form of Port Forwarding)
Then you have the fact that some manufacturers achieve NAT differently. Sometime you get devices that just don't "Play Nicely", creating the Certain Buddy Problem.
http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page15.html#CertainBuddy
I would use UPnP in devices if they have, where you can.
UPnP (Universal Plug n Play) allows the applications to control the modem ports at not use NAT (Or at least not in a way that effects things in iChat)

  • Bridge can't connect when roaming?

Not sure if this is a real problem with BB Bridge.
I'm overseas right now and the BB is on roaming mode with a foreign carrier.  When I tried to connect the PB with it, I get the following message,
    BlackBerry Bridge is Locked
Your BlackBerry smartphone could not be found
    Please check that:
    - Your BlackBerry smartphone is in range
    - Your BlackBerry smartphone is turned on
    - Your BlackBerry smartphone's Bluetooth connection is turned on
I've checked and everything is turned on.  Could it be that when it's BB is roaming, the PB can't connect?
    Anyone with similar experience?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

roaming should not affect bridge as it is a blue Tooth connection.
Then perform a Battery pull please, with the BlackBerry smartphone powered ON, remove the battery 15 seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot device. This will clear all cache like rebooting a PC. Then try again and see if your problem persists.
on Playbook press power button and both Vol + - buttons for 10 seconds to reboot it.
    if above dont work
delete the BlueTooth Bridge profiles on both devices
Then perform a Battery pull please, with the BlackBerry smartphone powered ON, remove the battery 15 seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot device. This will clear all cache like rebooting a PC. Then try again and see if your problem persists.
on Playbook press power button and both Vol + - buttons for 10 seconds to reboot it.
setup bridge again and see if it persists.

  • Can't Connect When Specifying Database Name

    Hi all,
I have an issue with an Oracle 9 database where I can connect if I do not specify a database to connect to but when i do specify one i get an error.
For example, my database is called WEB. If i open sqlplus and type connect username/password it will connect fine. If I type connect username/password@web I get an error.
The full error that appears in the log is:
TNS-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process
    TNS-12546: TNS:permission denied
    TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    TNS-00516: Permission denied
    *32-bit Windows Error: 5: Input/output error*
I have checked the tns entries and listener file and both are fine. Here are the entries:
    TNSNAMES:
    WEB =
    *(DESCRIPTION =*
    *(ADDRESS_LIST =*
    *(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))*
    *(CONNECT_DATA =*
    *(SERVER = DEDICATED)*
    *(SERVICE_NAME = web)*
    LISTENER:
    LISTENER =
    *(DESCRIPTION_LIST =*
    *(DESCRIPTION =*
    *(ADDRESS_LIST =*
    *(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC0))*
    *(ADDRESS_LIST =*

    SID_LIST_LISTENER =

    *(SID_DESC =*
    *(GLOBAL_DBNAME = web)*
    *(ORACLE_HOME = D:\OraHome_1)*
    *(SID_NAME = web)*
This is on a Windows machine and I have checked and all the services are running. I have also checked the sqlnet.ora file for this entry:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE) and tried it with NONE and NTS.
WEB is the only database on the Oracle server.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?

  • Deluge-console can't connect when running daemon

To date, I have always run deluged as my user.  I started the deluged daemon (rc.d start deluged) but find myself unable to connect via deluge-console.
    [ERROR ] 10:05:50 client:393 RPCError Message Received!

    BadLoginError: Username does not exist
The wiki offers no guidance on deluge-console.  Is this expected behavior?  The gtk client works fine btw.

While searching for the problem, I crossed your thread and thereafter, found a solution :
    Launch deluge-console as usual.
It will throw the error, but you can still use the deluge shell, so connect to the daemon using this command :
    connect localhost user password
Replace localhost by the host if it's a remote machine, user and password by the ones you use in the authentification config of Deluge.

  • HT1595 Apple TV loses complete internet connection every 5 minutes.  Tried restarting.  Tried unplugging the router, unplugging the modem, and unplugging Apple TV and it still does't work.  Get error message 22 saying it can't connect when I put in my pas

It only connects for minutes at a time.  I have not changed my router, modem, or placement of my apple tv, modem, or router.  It just suddenly stopped working.  Any suggestions?

Mine is doing the exact same problem!
Ever since I rented a movie from itunes with the ATV connected to the internet via wireless (strong signal) from an airport extreme connected to my modem from charter communications (with about 30Mbps speed) it will suddenly stop and by stop I mean it leaves the movie completely and says YOUR APPLE TV IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET.
So if I go to my network in the apple tv menu, sure enough my wireless network is missing. But the ipad is finding it, and the imac on wireless is finding it, and it is working. So we hit restart on the apple tv. When it comes back all is good. Then maybe the movie runs ten minutes and it does it again.
In some cases the wireless network reappears but if I select it it still says I'm not connected to the internet.
I have to restart everytime or it will not properly reconnect to the internet or find my wireless net work and actually work and connect.
It has been connected in the same place for a year and never had an issue.
Nothing has changed..... I have not added a wall to cause interference....
My iPad and iPhone show FULL strength.
    Please help!

  • Can't connect when it says it's connected

Sometimes my computer says it's connected to the internet but it doesn't work. I have to use the repair button constantly and once in a while the same thing happens again. Could someone tell me if there is a solution and how to fix it? Thanks.
    Model: WRT54G

Change the Wireless Settings on your router and try to re-connect to your Network...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop)...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1

  • Can't connect to the university network (netcfg) + dhcpcd doesn't load

    Hi.
    1. I can't connect to the campus network in the university. I'm using netcfg to connect but the connection fails.
The university website (I would have post a link but the tutorial is in Hebrew) states the following for android smartphone (which I think should be similar):
    EAP method: PEAP
    PHASE 2: MSCHAPV2
    CA: none
    user confirm: none
    identity: bgu-users\<username>
    anonymous: bgu-users\<username>
    password:<password>
How do I achieve that in netcfg? I tried the examples files but they didn't work. How do I handle this then?
    2. I have added the dhcpcd daemon to rc.conf:
DAEMONS=(hwclock syslog-ng network netfs crond dbus dhcpcd cupsd sensors sshd laptop-mode)
However, I still need to load it when I start the machine.
How can I load it then?
    Thanks

You'll most probably need these in your config section. Do find out more about your uni's wireless network and fill in the corresponding fields.
    CONFIGSECTION='
    ssid=
    proto=WPA
    key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
    pairwise=
    group=
    identity= (most probably your username)
    password=
scan_ssid=1 (if your network is hidden)
    ca_cert=""
    phase1=""
    phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"

  • Upraded Sql Developer and can't connect to Oracle

I just updated to the Dec 2009 release and now I can't connect
When I click the plus or right click on Connections and select "New Connection" nothing happens.
If I monitor processes in task manager it shows a brief spike in cpus and a small increase in memory usage but nothing happens in the app.
I also noticed that when I close the application it does not leave memory. I have to kill the process via the task manager to get rid of it.
If I go back to version 1.5.1 it works fine. It also leaves memory when terminated
    Using winxp r3.

  • Can't connect to computer through wireless network

I recently purchased a Powerbook G4 with OS X Server 10.4.6 installed, and I cannot connect to my iMac G5, which has OS X 10.4.6 installed. I am trying to connect them wirelessly, and it sees the G5, but tells me that it is offline and can't connect when I try. I can connect to the Powerbook through the iMac, but not the other way around. Tried different share settings on G4, but am quite unfamiliar with OS X Server. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

It seems like you may not have the relevant service(s) enabled in Sharing preferences on your iMac, if I understand your problem correctly. The settings on the server, other than firewall, shouldn't matter for outgoing connections.

  • 3109 can't connect to PC Suite

I am on my third 3109 and have always used PC Suite, no problems with the others.  The latest one I have named the same (bluetooth) as before and set to visible.  I have connected it and paired to my laptop, as I always do.  Then when I search for devices in PC Suite - I see 2 phones called silvercue.  One says it needs to be connected, but is greyed out and the other says it needs to be connected and authorised and is greyed out.
I have restarted the phone and PC Suite - always the same.  I can't connect, when the phone is, or is not connected to the laptop.
What is wrong?  This is the same process I have always used with identical handsets and always used the same phone name with no issues.
    Thanks in advance.
PS - I did search, but could see the answer.

    Hi,
I have some problems with the connection but in this moment, I am working "well".
First: Please use the Driver included in the CD with the Original Cable. Not use the driver downloaded from the site.
Second: When you connect the cable in the phone, you will received a error message, ignore it, wait near one minut and you see a message "Nokia 6103 is connected" in your PC
Third: To disconnect the phone, first go to "Admin Conecctions" in the Nokia PC Suite and unheck "Serial Cable (CA-42)", when you received a message of desconnectio, you can unplug the cable from the phone.
    Bye.
    EDUARDO.

  • Skype can't connect - most likely router problem, ...

Lately I can't connect to Skype at home. I've tried a lot of different solutions but none of them work.
The problem started a few months ago when I just couldn't sign into Skype (can't connect). At that time I had no change in any network settings on my computer nor my router. Interestingly enough, I could connect to Skype on Ubuntu (I have dualboot). Though even Ubuntu eventually failed to connect back then (just can't sign in) - still no changes in my network. I couldn't be bothered at the time with the problem so I just didn't use Skype.
However after some time (some weeks or a month or two), when I tried to connect to Skype again, it worked (on Win 7 as well as Ubuntu). Again, no changes to my network have been done in the mean time (Skype might of been updated, but I doubt it was on both platforms at the same time).
So Skype worked for a while until about a month ago, when the problem reoccurred. This time I said I'm going to get to the bottom of this so here is the situation:
I can connect to Skype at work no problem (on my desktop as well as my Android phone)
I can't connect to Skype at home (just won't sign in) on my desktop nor my phone
    I have tried:
Reinstalling Skype with cleaning everything that Skype might have left behind
Installing an (a bit) older version 6.9 (because even the latest 6.11 didn't work). Though these two attempts I've come to see are in vain once I figured out that I can't connect to Skype on my phone as well.
Resetted my router a couple of times.
Reset my router settings to default.
Opened/forwarded Skype ports to my (local) IP. I even enabled DMZ to redirected all traffic to my desktop computer (although I'm not 100% sure that that worked as I imagine it should work).
Tried some proxy settings in Skype (Connection options) I found on your forum.
None of the above worked in any way...
My router is a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND with (I think the latest) firmware version 3.13.13 Build 130428 Rel.58290n (hardware is v1).
    TLDR:
I can't sign in to Skype at home. It works when I'm at work. I can connect to Skype on my phone if I'm at work (over WiFi) or if I'm on 3G, but not if I'm on my home WiFi. That said, no software firewall can be the problem here, but my router. However I have no more ideas as to what else I can try. This forum is my last hope for finding a solution.
    Please help.

I do not know the makeup of Skype's internal security policies when it comes to this as they are not too open about this. Most companies are not. These are the only reasons I believe a block would occur based off any company's security policy.
    1. A proactive measure - A blacklist of IPs is constantly obtained/updated to include anonymizer services that might harm the network.
    2. An active/counteractive measure -
    I. Someone uses an anonymizer to SPAM people on the Skype network:
    a. Users complain using the abuse option. Users get the IP Auto-banned.
    b. The company (Skype) receives the complaints or notices a trend and Manual/Auto bans the IP.
II. Too many people (connections) sign on with the same IP (due to an exit relay/proxy). Due to this being very suspicious, (maybe even DDos-like behavior) the IP is Auto-banned.
I tend to lean more towards the counteractive measure since I don't believe many proactive measures are needed to limit abuse. There is always at least one rotten apple that engages in illegal activity using anonymizers, proxies, etc. that ruin it for everybody. In reality I believe it is a combination/balance of the two. Not to be prejudice against anonymizers, just blacklists to protect the network from known attacks. For whatever reason once the threshold is met, the IP is banned.  If I had to guess how long it would be in intervals of 30 days (30, 60, 90, 120, etc.). The whole Internet is not going to banned so the security policies in effect can't be too strict. It's goal is probably just to limit the majority of bad behavior that causes problems for their customers.
Skype is not the only service that reacts this way. Even ISPs will receive notices and in turn will send notices to their customer that since illegal activity (RIAA notices, etc.) is occurring due to a Tor exit relay or some other anonymizer, the ISP will terminate services with that customer if they don't cease (due to breach of contract).
I don't know whether you can limit an exit relay so it can't be used to access Skype. It may be a lost cause. If I made the choice to run a similar service it would be with a whitelist of people I knew who wouldn't use it to perform illegal activity, just remain anonymous when online.
You shouldn't have any issues running a non exit relay since in doing so your IP is not being broadcast all over the Internet like a calling card which an exit relay does. Changing your modem's MAC address is something you need to call your ISP for. However changing your router's MAC address generally does not require that. All that is required is a reboot of the modem, router, and possibly computer if you run into issues. You will probably continue to run into the same problem as long as you attempt to run an exit relay.
Be aware that for every IP that get's banned on your ISP is another IP a person could get issued for 24 hours to a week + after it gets released. Some people then visit this community and complain how they can't connect when it worked not too long ago and how Skype "sucks". So sometimes things like this create a ripple effect for other customers.

  • Can't connect using differnet startup disk!

I archived everything to wipe some drives clean and manually migrate. Its done wonders to speed up my Quicksilver G4.
I reinstalled Tiger on the old orginal drive (should fail sometime soon; its five years old) and also on a Maxtor 120g (much newer). Strangely, I can't connect when using the Maxtor as the startup drive. Network diagnostics tell me that my ethernet cables aren't connected, among other oddities, such as constantly changing data in the Setup Assistant pane.
When I installed Tiger on the Maxtor, communication with Apple and .Mac was fine (retrieved all account info), but Safari wouldn't connect.
The Maxtor used to have two partitions and was my main startup drive which I archived and zeroed out.
It gets stranger. My MacPro also won't connect if the G4 is unable to connect using the Maxtor! When I go back to using the original IBM Apple drive, everything connects beautifully.
When trying to access the router via browser, using the IBM of course is fine, but using the newly formatted Maxtor, I can't gain access.
MacPro and G4 are connected via ethernet to a DLink DI 624; ISP is Verizon FIOS (which is killer, btw).
Any ideas are much appreciated. BD Aqua?

In passing I'll mention that different brand Drives mixed can have bizarre results with CS or M/S, and though Apple swears you should use CS, (some drives won't boot if NOT CS), I've had to do the opposite on some of mine... or seperate them to different buses.
Back to the problem, (not sure it's a good install because of the Mix!), but 1st I'd get what's my ip...
    http://www.whatsmyip.org/
If that didn't work then I'd try trashing...
/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences... the whole Prefs folder there.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration... the whole SysConfig folder.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.
If that doesn't work, I'd ZERO the drive and reinstall.
PS.How long ago where you here_ I think you wouldn't care for little LA that runs from Canada to Oregon now!

I want to use an old 3 GS iPhone that is no longer in service as a phone now as just an iPod to play music. When I connect the phone to the computer with iTunes running, iTunes says it can't connect to the device because it didn't get a valid response from the device. How can I get the system to recognize the phone, and let me rename it as my iPod, instead of my phone?
As an aside, the current installed operating system on this old iPhone is 4.2.1, but that wasn't one of the selectable options in the operating system list dropdown below. Don't know if that makes any difference.

  • When I try to turn on my iPhone 4, it wouldn't turn on unless if I use an iPad Charger. When it will turn on. I can't connect to any WiFi Services or my Service Provider, I can't text or call anyone. When I unplug my iPhone 4 it'll just shut off.

So when I try to plug in My iPhone 4 to any plug it won't turn on or charge unless if I use an iPad charger. When I do get to turn it on. My Phone will Standby for a few seconds( While I'm Typing my 4-Digit Code) then it'll unlock and go to the home screen. Once I'm on the home Screen I can't Call, Text or Email anyone because my iPhone Can't detect any Wifi Hotspots and it also can't connect to my Service Provider, It'll just Say "Searching...". The non-internet apps work perfectly fine. So since I was able to use Just an iPad Charger to turn on my iPhone 4, I tried a Regular iPhone charger that were plugged into a wall or my computer. When its Plugged in, my iPhone will turn on ( Showing the Apple Logo) then turn back off. It'll constanly do this only when it's plugged into a Regular iPhone Charger, Either plugged into a Wall Socket or my Computer. So I Tried to Restore the Phone by using some of the Methods, given by other iPhone 4 Users, non of them worked. My iPhone won't Restart, Restore, Turn on without a Charger, Be Detected on my Computer and Detect my Service Provider. I really need help to fix my iPhone 4. I'm really not sure if it's a Malfunction with the Software on the iPhone, if my Sim Card is Broken. if the System is Corrupted but it only happens Rarely.

  • I've seen all the posts for fixing the wifi on the 4s, none of them work!  So, who can tell me why my iPhone 4S cannot find any wifi when it used to easily, and when it does it can never connect?

I've seen all the posts for fixing the wifi on the 4s, none of them work!  So, who can tell me why my iPhone 4S cannot find any wifi when it used to find wifi, and when it does find a wifi network it can never connect?  You think apple would have a clue how to fix it!  Because turning the wifi on and off doesn't work, resorting network settings doesn't work, even restoring phone to factory default doesn't work...

Did not work. I've selected iMessage to ON and left it. After a few hours I recieved a message "activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again". This has been going on for the past 3 days.
