Can't consolidate library (it disappeared in iTunes 8)

I recently download iTunes 8 and I am completely satisfied with Genius.
Thing is, now I can't consolidate my library to my external hard drive.
Anybody know what happened?
I would usually go to the top taskbar and use the consolidate library option in iTunes 7, but now, no more of that.

It's been moved to a slightly different location: File menu > Library > Consolidate Library.

  • ATV freezes or can't find library when streaming from ITunes 8

I'm running a relatively new Apple TV box, which shipped with software version 2.3. It's connected to a 64-bit Windows Vista box running iTunes 8.0.2.22. It's a wired network connection running through a Belkin N1 Vision router.
The ATV and iTunes see each other. No problem there. But when I try to stream photos or music from the PC to the ATV, either the ATV spins forever "loading" the library, or the library loads but the entire system freezes as soon as I try to actually access anything (it stalls on the shuffle/albums/artists menu).
I tried to get it to sync instead of stream. In this case, it stalls/freezes on the first song downloaded. I've restarted the ATV, unplugged and restarted the ATV and restored the ATV to factory settings -- each multiple times. No change.
Oddly, I can access the iTunes store via the ATV to purchase music or video. That part still works. It's only the connection to a computer that's causing the hearburn.
I removed the firewall, to no effect. So that's not it. Any help is most appreciated. The box is only about a month old, and this non-performance is more than a little frustrating.
    Thx --
    Joel

    Hmm.
It's possible the networking is fine and there's some other issue such as a corrupted itunes library database/xml fiel - this could cause problems when trying to sync or transfer to AppleTv if either itunes or AppleTV falls over parsing the files.
Could you create a new Vista user account, add some test files, then set this 'Computer' up for Sharing under AppleTv Settings. I'd log out of the normal user in Vista not just switch users as iTunes on my mac does not like 2 itunes user running concurrently when it comes to streaming - only 1 is accessible. If you can stream successfully, might point to an iTunes problem with the current user account.
I would not set the new user up as the (single) sync library as it'll delete any synced stuff already on AppleTv which could leave you with an empty box.
Other things you could try as a last resort might include uninstalling and resinstalling iTunes (you may need to deauthorise first, I would just in case) or performing a Sytem Restore of the AppleTV (Hold menu and down to enter diagnostics menu and select it from Diagnostics menu). Last resort things these though.
Also, if you've only rebooted AppleTV in software pull the power cord and leave for a few mins, then restart. If some internal component is having a 'bad hair day' then it might be stuck in that state as the power isn't cut by a software reboot.
    Good luck.

  • Can't "consolidate library" - transfer of iTunes library to ExHD

Hi - I've updated to Snow Leopard, also updated to iTunes 9. I am trying to transfer my iTunes library to an ExHD (Lacie). Followed the instructions in Apple iTunes help (although it doesn't seem to be updated to iTunes 9). Anyway so all my music files are on my ExHD, iTunes actual library files (.xml etc) are still on MBP HD. I've repointed the direction of where the music files are in iTunes preferences etc, but no luck. Each time I try and play a track it asks me to locate the file - which of course I can do and then it plays but I don't want to do this for every single music track....arrgghh!!! Help please?

Yeh I copied the entire Itunes folder, it has these items inside:
    Album Artwork
    Itunes library Extras.itdb
    Itunes Library genius.itdb
    Itunes Library.itl
    Itunes Media
    itunes Music Library.xml
    previous itunes libraries.
Just tried launching with option key held down, selected the Itunes file and again it hasn't loaded all the music into Itunes ? ? ?

  • Can't import library from iPod to iTunes

I was having troubles with my laptop so I was forced to re-load the entire operating system, deleting everything previously on my computer. Now, I'm unable to load all of my songs from my iPod into my new iTunes library. The only ones it is allowing me to import are songs that were purchased through the iTunes store. This is a pain because now I'm unable to listen to music on my computer. Can anyone help?

Go get some 3rd-party software like Yamipod, Copypod, etc.
    Just google "iPod restore"
As you've found out, iTunes will only restore purchased music.
I can't recommend any certain program, since I haven't had to do this.

  • How can I disable Library/Home Sharing in iTunes?

So, i have two apple computers connected to the same network, one iMac connected via ethernet cable, one MBP connected to wifi. There are also other apple products connected to the same network but i don't think they have any relation to the problem that i have.
On both machines i have Home sharing turned off and i have even disabled all the options from the General sharing menu (outside itunes). Despite all this, i can see on both machines the other machine's library and i can play everything, music, videos, playlists, etc. What is even stranger is that in iTunes general preferences i have unchecked 'shared libraries' so i shouldn't see it even if it was shared. I have even tried to activate home sharing but to select nothing in the sharing list...no change. i am not even loged in to itunes or app store. Both macs have 10.8.3 and itunes 11.
What i suspect may be related to this:
Initially i had only the macbookpro with a user id, password, library name 'username's library'. After i've bought the imac i have set it with the same accound name, password and of course library name was the same. At some point i had home sharing on both machines since i used the same apple for it.
Does anyone know how to fix this? I mean normally i wouldn't care but i think that because of this, my imac does not go correctly to sleep, or wakes up when i open itunes on the other machine. I have wake on demand ON and i do not want to turn it off since i keep it on to ssh from the MBP and run some scripts, etc while the iMac is sleeping
    Any ideea is welcomed! Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You would only need homesharing on your iPad if you want to use the remote app (which is quite handy actually). To be able to use the iPad with the Apple TV, you use AirPlay, but the iPad won't show up in a list on the Apple TV, you send content from the iPad itself.
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

  • Can´t burn Library to DVD with iTunes 7 -Error 8785

When Burning my whole Library to DVD (The new Backup Feature), iTunes 7 tells me about an unexpected error (-8785) while throwing out the 2nd DVD to burn. The first DVD is already finished. Any Ideas how to fix it?

For me the problem is solved:
On oct. 17. I bought this song:
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=14929468& s=143443&i=14929691
In iTunes it has the following track information:
    Title: We Are the World
Interpret: Ars Canto G. Verdi, B.B. King, Boyzone, Gianni Morandi, Gloria Estefan, Guatemala Choir, Joe Cocker, José Molina, Laura Pausini, Lionel Richie, Luciano Pavarotti, Mariah Carey, Marianne Tatum, Melanie Daniels, Orchestra Sinfonica Italiana, Pino Palladino,
On my harddrive I can find the file in my iTunes Library folder, but even spotlight isn't able to locate the file.
In iTunes on the information dialog of the song it reads "nicht verfügbar" wich is "not available" but the song plays fine.
I removed the song from my library and the backup worked!!!
After the backup completed successfully I added the file again and the backup throwed Error -8785 again.
Solution: I renamed the the interpret tag to "Various", the filename/directory changed in the finder and the complete name/path shows up in iTunes. Backup now works fine including this tune!!!
Look at the iTunes Tags for suspicious long names in the tagfields that are used the generate the filename on the harddisk. Inspect these files in iTunes on the information tab.
In conclusion I would say: This is an iTunes Bug!

P.S.: Let me hear, if the solution worked!

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?
    Scott

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • Need to import iTunes library, but can't "consolidate" first

I recently downloaded iTunes 7. Shortly thereafter, the program would unexpectedly quit within a minute of starting up iTunes. After so many times, my hard drive lost its ability to start up. With the help of Tech Support, I used Disc Utility from the Tiger Install DVD to determine that the drive was problematic and that I should copy files off of it before losing them forever. I now have a new hard drive installed and am able to read off of the old one through an external hard drive enclosure via USB. I have looked at how to move an iTunes library, but everything I read says that I need to start up from the old drive, open iTunes and "Consolidate Library..." (under Advanced). I CAN'T DO THIS!!!! The best I have been able to come up with is to open the new iTunes on the new hard drive and import from the old one. This gets me all the songs, but no playlists. THEN I import the .xml file and this gets me my playlists and fills up what it can. I can't figure out how to import all my ratings and without those ratings, some of my Smart Lists have no songs in them. So my first problem is: How do I get the ratings back? I also have a second problem: I had to "authorize" the music I purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Will I have to "authorize" for each iPod I update on this machine??? I'm hoping someone can tell me the correct way for me to move my music to my new hard drive that includes all my ratings and stuff and gives me no loss of "authorizations". HELP!!!!
P.S. - Startup Disk does not give me the option to boot in OSX from the old hard drive. Strangely though, I do get the option of booting in OS9! Perhaps this means I just need to repair OSX on the drive somehow??? If it's easier, help me get my old hard drive to boot again in OSX, that would then allow me to "consolidate" my library and do it correctly.
    G4 Mirrored doors   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Quit iTunes. Go to your user account/Library/Preferences folder and locate a file named "com.apple.iTunes.plist". Drag it to the trash.
Restart iTunes and the iTunes Setup Assistant will run again and you can select your choice for internet playback on the second screen.
You will have to goto iTunes > Preferences and reselect your preferences in each tab. The default general preference is to not show iTunes U, Books, Apps and Ringtones libraries, so if you want to see them, be sure to check them off.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    Missing tracks
Typically this can happen because a file or folder is accidentally shunted to the wrong location. iTunes can also get confused if it expects to be talking to an external drive which isn't there. If will often reset the default media folder location and may have trouble finding files in the old folders.
Select one of your tracks that is missing in action. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Cancel when asked to try to locate the file, then look at the location given on the summary tab. This where iTunes thinks the file ought to be? Now find out where it actually is. Post back the two locations for comparison. I should be able to give you some steps to reconnect everything once I can determine which of the things that might have gone wrong is most likely in your case.

  • Music on iPod disappeared from iTunes library. It stays on iPod even when I sync. Can I get it back in iTunes?

Thank you to anyone who can help me with this. When I got my iPod touch a few months ago, I first imported music from CDs into iTunes. I then created playlists and hooked up my iPod and synched it. My music library and playlists no longer appear in iTunes. When I sync  my iPod, the songs and playlists still remain on my iPod. Is there any way to get the songs and playlists to show in iTunes again?

  • I want to update my itunes, however i'm worried it will mess up my library. ast fall when i did the update it caused about 40% of my library to disappear, including a lot of music from cd's that i imported. if that happens again, can i unistall v. 11?

I want to upgrade our Itunes to version 11.0 We have not upgraded since last fall when about 30-40% of our library disappeared when an update was done. Is there a way to reverse or recover if that happens again?

What you should do now is make a backup!
Should something go wrong during the upgrade the following will usually work but it is no substitute for a complete backup.

Should you wish to revert to iTunes 10.7 after trying 11.0 first download a copy of the installer from here, uninstall iTunes. Probably best to also remove other supporting software, e.g. Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support & Bonjour. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram above, then install iTunes 10.7.

  • ITunes Library has Disappeared

Turned on the Mac Mini this morning only to find my entire iTunes library has disappeared. The finder indicates space on the drive implying the music is gone.
Further it appears that my account has been completely recreated - but empty.
(Desktop back to default - no desktop icons etc..)
I have backed up the library (80Gb) and can restore, but have lost the last two weeks of additions and ratings. Most annoying... Any suggestions?

I moved my iTunes to an external drive, and my library disappeared, although both the library data base and all the files were on the external drive (but no longer on the internal drive). I then went to edit/preferences/advanced and changed the iTunes Music folder location. No result. I then selected files/library/consolidate library with no result. I held shift, started iTunes, and instructed the computer where the library data base file was, but this didn't help. I then read the iLounge artice on Transferring your iTunes library and figured out that this was all wrong and should transfer my files back to their original location on my computer. I did so and the library still doesn't load into iTunes. I've spent hours pouring through these discussion forums and nothing seems to apply or work. Any advice?

  • While importing and burning some CDs, my entire library has disappeared.  Also, there no longer is a "burn file to disc" command in the File menu.  I have downloaded the latest version of itunes which restored only tracks I bought from the iTunes store.

Also, the "burn playlist to disc" command has disappeared from the File options.  I downloaded the latest version of iTunes but that only restored tracks I'd bought from the iTunes store.  I also tried setting up another logon.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied & renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • The operation can't be completed because the item "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" is in use.

I am trying to transfer my iTunes from my PC to my new Mac. After reading through this forum a bit, I followed the instructions at: http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/move_itunes_windows_mac.html
I backed up my PC's iTunes folder to an external drive after selecting to consolidate files, etc.
I connected the external drive to my Mac and did a copy and paste of the iTunes folder. I have not put any music into the iTunes on the Mac, so I just said Yes to overrite (it said there are 2 files that will be overwritten- I think they are apps I downloaded this weekenad i am fine to overwrite them). It starts to copy and then I get the error message: "The operation can’t be completed because the item “iTunes Library Extras.itdb” is in use." I verified that I do not have iTunes open on the Mac and made sure that when I backed up from PC, I did not have iTunes open there either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Katie

    I figured it out!
There was an iTunes folder on my new Mac. I may have installed it. I just deleted the whole iTunes folder under Music. I then tried copying and pasting from my External Drive again and now it is copying the data as I would expect.
