Can't control with remote, but can with Remote app!

Turned on my Apple TV today after work. As often happens, Netflix was "unavailable".
I usually fix this by unplugging my Apple TV, letting it sit, and plugging back in.
This time, after rebooting, the IR remote would not control the menu system. The white light on the Apple TV flashes as I press the buttons.
I tried 3 different remotes; same thing.
Did the reset procedure detailed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3180
Unplugged it for 30, still not responding to the remotes! UGH!
Funny thing: I CAN control it using the Remote app on my iPhone.
Any ideas??

See:

If the unpair trick doesn;t work I'd suggest hooking up the AppleTV 2 to a computer running itunes using a microUSB cable alone and reverting it to factory state with current software.

  • How can I play music from the icloud using apple tv (2) controled by remote app  on iphone so the TV is switched off but stereo on

I was blown away when I started using the new remote app with Apple tv to play music from my iMac on my best music speakers in the living room!!!  However there are still 2 things required to make things ultra simple:
1 Not to have my iMac switched on to have to stream music to the Apple tv (I've now started using iTunes Match which has almost fixed this one)
2 Not have to have my TV switched on to control my amplifier through the apple tv.  (I can do this using the remote app on the iphone but only for music streaming from my iMac it wont work for music I have in iCloud, apart from music now playing.  I can't search/browse any other music)
If this is fixed it will be absolutely awesome!!! As my apple tv will replace all the HIFI separates apart form my amplifier and I can control what music my amp plays using the best user interface in the world my iphone/ipad

Hi, I don't have this bug. I can play music through my apple tv with the TV switched off and use the apple remote app to control the apple tv.
    My problem involves:
icloud music ----> broadband router ----> apple tv ---->music amplifier.  Using the remote app on the iphone to control whats playing.  This almost works but in the remote app you can only see the currently playing song, you can't search/browse your music in the icloud (itunes match).
    What does work is:
iMac-itunes music ----> apple tv ---->music amplifier controlled by the remote app in the iphone with teh tv off.  I can view my itunes library with the tv off using the iphone remote app. I would like to do this but using my music in iCloud. That would be awesome!!!

  • HT1947 Can you use a mobile hotspot on your iPhone 4s to control the remote app?

Can you use your Iphone 4s as a moblie hotspot to control Itunes via the remote app?

The camera roll is not part of the sync process at all.
You should be importing these photos to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.  Youc an organize them on your computer and sync the to the iphone if you wish.
The photos sync from the computer to the iphone is one way.
The iphone mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.

  • What happened to control in remote app 1.3.1?

I was exclusively using the control part (remember the icon with the 4 directional arrows?) of the remote app to control my apple tv. It was great and mimicked the white apple remote very nicely.
Thing is, since I upgraded to 1.3.1 I can't for the life of me find the feature there any more. Now I stuck with the tv shows icon which is awful to use and it throws the episodes all over the place.
Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong as I just want my remote app on my iphone to mimic my old little white apple remote, nothing more.
Please tell me it wasn't done away with.

    Cheers for the idea.
I tried both to no avail.
I'm running Leopard on my mac mini which has the itunes library that my NAS is hooked up to so it's on 24/7.
My itunes library that I hook up my iphone to is on my macbook as that's the day to day computer for me. That runs snow leopard.
I have a niggling feeling that because remote is installed under snow leopard and the itunes library i'm connecting to is on leopard may be causing a problem.
    Dammit!

  • Connecting remote app to Apple TV

I've connected my Apply TV to my router via cable. My iMAC is connected to the router via cable as well.
I can pair my Touch with both my iTunes library and my Apple TV, but I cannot control any of them (cannot find Apply TV nor iTunes). When I enable AirPort on my iMAC I can control my iTunes from my Touch. So far so good, but Apple TV can only connect through either cable or WIFI, not both. And my Apple TV is too far away from my router to be "reliable". That's why I use a cabled solution.
Am I in a "catch 22"? Or in another word does the Apple TV have to be WIFI connected in order for it to be controlled by "remote app"?

But as far as I understand Apple TV uses either cable or wifi, not both.
that's right - as soon as you plug an ethernet cable into the TV, wi-fi is disabled
Maybe there is a back door:-)
there isn't any. what you're doing should work well. i have my Mac's and my TV hardwired to my TC and yet can control both iTunes and the TV using the remote app on my Touch.
i would would try a *power cycle* of all my equipment. shut everything down for @ least 15 minutes. then, in intervals of 5 minutes, turn your modem back on, followed by the router, next the TV, and last your Mac.
    any improvement ?

  • TS2972 I have signed in with same Apple ID & same network but still can't use Remote app to control my iTunes via iPhone 4s or iPad2.

I have gone through FAQ and tried all methods and checked settings in my iMac and my iOS devices (iPhone 4s and iPad2) and still can't useRemore app to control iTunes. I have used this app without a problem before with my old iPhone 3 and it worked fine.
    What is wrong with it?

Other than you have used it before and it worked - can you provide some more details? You don't see your iTunes library in the remote app?

To an extent yes. You can't control the master volume, but tou can turn the volume up and down, up to the maximum set manually on your computer.

I think this is probably a sign that your network could be better than it is.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

  • Can I control a remote Mac with Messages?

    My OS:  Mountain Lion
I need to control a remote Mac. The remote Mac has Internet with WildBlue Excede (satellite). I am on a cable modem. Both Macs are hard-wired to modems. I have had no luck establishing a connection with Apple Remote Desktop. I remember a day when I was able to control a remote Mac with both Macs running iChat, albeit fuzzy and somewhat slow. Now, we have Messages. Can it be done with Messages? Is there a better way?
    Thanks

If both machines are signed into iCloud with the same account, you should be able to do remote screen sharing.  This is a lot easier if you have an Airport Extreme or a Time Capsule that lets you put your iCloud credentials in there.
I think with message you'd be able to remote screen control but the remote user would have to accept your request.

  • TS1741 I have lost the original remote for my Apple TV. I went to install it at my fiancés house, and cannot use the remote app on my ipad or iPhone. Can I still control the Apple TV with the apps?

Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

  • TS1741 I am having difficulty connecting my Remote App on iPad to iTunes. It used to work fine, but with latest iTunes and latest Remote, I can't get it to work. iTunes should open a 'pop up' window to add 4 digit code, but nothing happens. Any clues plea

Would appreciate in connecting Remote App on iPad to iTunes. It used to work find, before iTunes 11.0 - but now pop up window to input  4 digit code does not appear. Any ideas how to prompt window to open on iMac? Remote App works OK, but says that Home Sharing is not Turned On, although it is. Both devices are logged into my profile account.

You no longer need the 4 digit code in iTunes 11.
    iTunes (10.0.1 or later)
Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
iTunes 11 or newer: Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes by going to File > Home Sharing> Turn on Home Sharing.
iTunes 10.7 or older: Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes by going to Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing.
Connect iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network that is connected to the local network that your Mac or PC is also connected to.
Open the Remote app (software version 2.0 or later) on your mobile device.
Turn on Home Sharing in the Remote Settings screen. Make sure to sign into the same Home Sharing account you used to sign in to from iTunes on your computer.
Once Home sharing is enabled for both your computer and your mobile device, Remote app will be be able to view and control audio and video playback in your iTunes library.

  • I can use the Remote app to access my Itunes but cannot make it work with appletv

I can currently use remote app on my Ipad2 to access my windows desktop itunes library.  I cannot use the remote to access appleTV.  I am setting something up wrong?  Home sharing is turned on, apple tv can access the internet no problem.  The remote app just connects to my itunes library and that's it
    thanks for any help.

The remote app requires home sharing to be enabled on Apple TV and both to be on the same network. If those aren't in place you will need to purchase a new remote.
