Can't copy large files to airport extreme USB drive.

Hi Everyone,
I'm positng because I'm unable to copy large files to an AirPort Disk using Moutain Lion.  I have the following setup.
AirPort Extreme:
- Firmware version: 7.6.3
- Airport disks secured by password
External Drive:
- Seagate 3TB External Drive connected to Airport Extreme thru USB
- Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Formated
Computers:
- MacMini(Mid 2010) - MacBookPro 13" Retina
- Both have Mountain Lion with latest updates
Airport Utility:
- Version  6.2
I am using the drive for a backup of .mv4 files. Files up to 4g transfer just fine. Files over 4g will get all the way to the end and throw a -36 error. If I plug it into my mac the files copy just fine. I have googled the issue and get all of these fat32 and win7 issues. Not really relevant from what I can tell.
I have also connected other drives the the Airport formatted the same and get the same problem.

That's not entirely unusual as using that port on the AEBS for backup is an iffy business, especially if you are trying to use Time Machine which is completely unsupported by Apple.
There may well be something wrong with the file you are trying to transfer, hence, the -36 error. I have no solution for you. Generally, there is no suitable solution. If you get the error while trying to copy several files at once, then try doing one file at a time which sometimes works. Archiving may enable you to transfer the archive, but then dearchiving on the destination may not work.
You can check the filename length and look for illegal characters or just rename the file, if possible. And, don't overlook the possibility that the file itself is corrupted even if it does not appear to be so from outward appearances. Lastly or firstly, try transferring the file to the external drive hooked up directly to the computer instead of the AEBS.

  • Can't copy large files to AirPort Disk Using Windows 7

    Hi Everyone,
I'm positng because I'm unable to copy large files to an AirPort Disk using Windows 7.  I have the following setup.

    - Airport Disk Preferences:
      - Automatically discover airport disks is enabled

    Computers:
    - 2 Toshiba Proteges, Both with 4GB RAM
    - Both have Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 64-bit version

A week ago, I was able to copy over large files (videos <4GB in size) to the drive.  Now, when I try to copy over these large files to the drive, the copy dialog box hangs.  I receive a message stating that Windows is calculating the size, but then it doesn't copy over.  Windows then gives me a message that it is unable to copy to the drive.  When I test the drive connection by copying a small text file over, it copies over quickly and seamlessly.  This problem occurs on both computers.
I am able to do the following with the drive connection:
    - Read files
    - Change file names
    - Copy files from the drive to my computer
    - See the contents of drive
I've tried all the combinations of the following with no success:
    - Turning off Windows Search
    - Downgrading the firmware
    - Reconfiguring wireless adapter
    - Rebooting computer
    - Rebooting wireless router
    - Rebooting external drive
The drive seems to be working fine except for when I want to copy <2GB files over to the drive.  Does anyone have a solution that seems to work?
    Thanks!

I'm happy to report that, after reformatting the drive to HFS+ (aka Mac OS Extended), there are no problems writing/copying large or small files to the AirDisk drive.  I'm also happy to report that I am copying to the drive at a rate of roughly 4MB/s.
As I mentioned earlier, the only catch is that I am unable to plug the external drive directly into a Windows computer via the USB port as Windows is unable to read HFS+ formatted drives.  (I can, however, plug the drive into a Mac computer as they can read HFS+ formatted drives.  The only problem is that I don't own any Macs at this time!  LOL!)
You're probably wondering how I formatted the external drive to HFS+ since I don't own any Macs.  (Windows only allows you to format drives in exFAT, FAT, NTFS and the like.)  That is a good question.  Basically, I downloaded an open source formatting tool called, Gparted, which allows you to format any USB drive to any major file format system.  Since Gparted is an open source tool, it is a little cumbersome to use. Once you figure out how to use it, it is a cinch to format the drive to HFS+.  (Of course, an easier method would be to borrow a friend's mac, plug the drive into their mac, and format it to HFS+ using their mac.)
For a step-by-step guide on how to solve this problem, see the steps below:
    1) Backup all data from external drive
        a) Fortunately, I have a 1TB ultraportable USB drive which has enough space to backup all data on the drive
    2) Format the external drive to HFS+ using one of the methods below
        a) Plug it into a Mac and format it
         b) Use Gparted (free) to format it
    3) Plug the drive back into the Airport Extreme
    4) Start copying files over to your networked drive!
I hope this helps you! Cheers!

  • IPhoto 7 Will Not Share File on Airport Extreme USB Drive

I have a USB drive plugged in to my Airport Extreme (n). I keep both my iPhoto 7.0.1 Library and my iTunes 7.3.2 Library on that drive. I am able to share the iTunes Library just fine from two machines. But if I open the iPhoto Library on one machine it works fine - but when I try to open iPhoto from the other machine I get a 'locked file/locked disk/inadequate permissions' alert. Have repaired permissions from iPhoto boot window - and the disk/file is not locked. I used to be able to share the iPhoto Library on this disk prior to iPhoto 7. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to cure this?
    Thanks, Tuck

Sure, I'll explain. Actually this is how network shared drives are supposed to work from what Apple's promotional material says. I have both my iTunes Library and my iPhoto Library on a USB drive connected to my Airport Extreme so that both my wife and I can share the music and the pictures. We will often listen to different things at the same time on iTunes - which will make sense to you as that activity is really only a read. But I can add and delete music at the same time that she listens. With iPhoto we both can look at different pictures at the same time - I suppose just like iWeb can import photos at the same time I am running a slideshow in iPhoto. My problem is that this ability broke during my upgrade to iPhoto 7.0.1 - although it is possible this happened during 10.4.10 and I didn't notice, but I don't think so. As I have mentioned above I now find that I can create a NEW iPhoto Library and be able to share it on both machines again. So - my current question is: can I copy the contents of my old iPhoto Library into a newly created library and retain all the edits, events, titles, rankings, etc? And if so, is there any trick to it.

  • Set up a Windows formatted Drive as an Airport Extreme USB drive

I have a USB hard drive that was formatted as a Windows NTFS drive.  The drive does not have data that I want to keep.  I assume I have to format it as a MAC drive to use it as a Airport Extreme USB drive.  What is the best way to set it up?  Should I format it with the drive attached to my Macbook Pro or can it be formatted attached to the Airport?  Are there any things I should be aware of in attaching this drive to the Airport?
Although I don't think it matters, this drive is a Vantec Nexstar MX400 enclosure with two 3TB hard drives configured as a 3 TB RAID 1.  If anyone has additional information I should know about working with an MX400 RAID 1 drive in formatting it for a Mac it would be appreciated.

You need to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), FAT16, or FAT32 while it's plugged into a computer. exFAT, NTFS, and non-journaled HFS+ won't work.
You may also need to use an USB hub with its own power supply.

  • Can't copy large files to NAS

I have a Cirago USB NAS adapter that I have one 120 GB external drive connected to.
The external drive is FAT32 formatted.
I can connect to the drive just fine and can copy small files to it without a problem.
When I try to copy larger files to it (~700 MB or greater) it gives me an error saying there isn't enough space on the drive.
The drive has over 40 GB of space available though.
Not sure what the heck is going on...

I ended up having to connect to the NAS differently.
The nas automatically showed up in the Finder when I started it up for the first time.
It just showed up as "nas"
Well, I needed to go to the Go menu in finder then click "Connect to server"
I then had to enter a specific address
    http://nas.local:9880
It then asked for login credentials.
The only difference is it connected via WebDAV this time around.

  • Can't copy large files to an USB Disk pugged in an USB hub

When I tried to copy large files to my USB disk pugged in an USB hub, it stopped at 220 Kb... When I plug the disk to the internal back USB port it works fine ¿Any idea?
    Thanks

    Hi, cguzman -
Related to what Templeton suggested, if your USB hub does not have external power (self-power), try replacing it with one that does.
If your hub is self-powered, many of those have a small selector switch on the side or rear which allow the choice of self- or bus-power. If yours has such a switch, make sure it is not set to 'bus'.

  • Can't Copy Large Files To External Drive

This is driving me nuts. I'm running 10.4.11 with an external Newer Tech Ministack 320GB hard drive that's only ten weeks old. Yesterday I downloaded some large (50mb or so) QuickTime files to my desktop, which is to say my internal drive. I then tried to copy them to my external drive, since that's where I keep my movie files since they take up so much room. One copied over without any trouble, but numerous attempts to copy the others result in the process freezing after anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 of the data has been copied, or else I get the "error 36" message. My first thought was that the external drive was failing, but I can copy small movie files (10mb or so) back and forth between the two drives with no problem. What's the point of having a large external drive if you can't use it for your large files? Repaired permissions on both drives, no improvement.

I have repaired permissions and run disk repair on the internal drive as well. Yes, I've played the clips in their entirety, but I'm going to do it again and look for any hiccups. That's an interesting theory and I want to check it out.
It has occurred to me that a workaround, although it by no means addresses the underlying problem, is to use QuickTime Pro to chop the clips up into several smaller files, copy them to the external drive, and then reassemble them via QuickTime Pro on the external drive.
FWIW, I neglected to mention (although I don't know if it's pertinent or not) that immediately after installing the external drive ten weeks ago I used SuperDuper to clone my entire internal drive onto the external firewire drive. I then erased the movies from the internal drive, which was bumping up against maximum capacity. I am able to boot from the external drive, and I want to retain this capacity should the internal drive (which is, after all, six and a half years old) fail.

  • Can't copy large files to any Samba share

Just updated to Mavericks but i'm having big problems moving bigger files (so far i've tried a couple of 4GB files) to a SMB share. Just the other day i could copy these files over just fine under Mountain Lion but Mavericks throws this error:
"The item blablabla.bla can't be copied because it's too large for the volume's format"
So far i've tried with a couple of files smaller than 4GB (up to 2.5gb so far) work just fine. No write errors either. The files can be copied without problems when i boot from my older harddrive with Mountain Lion still on it so i'm going to go out on a limb and say it's not a file or server error but a Mavericks error. Anyone know why or what to edit for this to work normally again?

I have temporarily resolved this problem by reconnecting to the server and shares differently.
    Disconnect from the server
In Finder, select "Go" and then "Connect to server..."
    For server address enter: CIFS://ServerNameOrIPAdress/
    Select the shares you need
You will now be able to move bigger files to SMB shares again. For ease of use, drag a share or a folder within a share to your Sidebar.
As it appears Apple has implemented a newer version of the SMB protocol, SMB2, that is still somewhat buggy and will throw errors like these.
I hope this helps someone else as well.

  • Can't copy large files from DVD

    Hi all,
I'm trying to copy a 4.3 GB .tar file from a DVD onto my harddrive, but it will only copy about 1 GB before I get the error
    Cannot read: Input/output error
I can copy smaller files just fine from the same DVD and other DVDs, but nothing too large.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you.

Brasero checks immediately after the burn. I presume your DVD is a bit older than one day . If not, you just burnt yourself a coaster.
I know there are some Windows programs to check the integrity of an optical disc, but I don't remember their names (nor do I know something like that for Linux).
I would do a few copy trials, with dd. If you always see it break on the same size and you have plenty of space left, then I think there really is a problem with the data integrity on your DVD. I have done copies with dd from optical media before, and I think you can be pretty sure the data is corrupt if dd can't pull it off.

  • Can't copy large file to FW drive

I'm not sure who to ask, but when I try to copy a 7gb file to an external Lacie FW drive I keep getting Error Code 1309. I've copied the file to another drive successfully, but wonder why I can't and what the Error Code means.
Is there anything I can do besides reformat the drive? If not, and I must reformat shouldn't it be as HFS+?

I assume your external drive is formatted FAT32, so it can be read by both a Mac & PC. However, FAT32 has a limitation of 4GB files due to the fact that 4GB is the largest 32-bit number, and the length of the file in the directory entry is 32-bits.

  • Can't copy large file

My n900 free space is 11G, I tried to copy a 9.5 file to it., but it says "no sufficient space to copy file...". What's the reason for this?

How are you trying to copy a file to the device? Mass storage mode? or are you using the device itself to pull the file from somewhere?

  • Itunes library on airport extreme usb drive is gone (or hidden)

i cant figure out why my entire library on my hard drive is gone. my music is stored in a folder called "music" on the networked harddrive. i have 1000 artists in my itunes library, but for some reason, only 156 show up in the finder app. when i play them from itunes they play, so i know they are somewhere, and from itunes, when i select a song and then "get info" on a song, it shows where its supposed to be, but its not there in the finder. is is possible that they are invisible for some reason. from itunes "show in finder" brings up a blank finder screen but the song still plays. any ideas?

  • Airport Extreme & USB Drive: Difference in ways to access the drive?

Hi, sorry for the lengthy explanation:
I have an Airport Extreme (Firmware 7.4.1) with an external hard drive attached. Settings are so it is shared (but password protected) on the home network as well as over the internet (via bonjour).
I see two ways how I can connect and mount my disk:
    1. Airport Disk: Only works when on the home network, in Finder I go to "shared", find the disk and connect to it. The Icon on the Desktop will look like a Drive that has the Airport bars on it.
    2. Server: Works from Home Network and the Internet. In finder, I "go to server" and put in my IP address. When mounted, the Icon will look like a drive with three people holding hands on it.
My question: What is the difference?
I am using third party backup software (Crashplan.com) to back up to this drive. When using method 1, backups work fine, when using method 2, backups fail. Otherwise I have access to all the files on the drive using either method.

    Hi Don,
Could it be that they are using different technologies to mount the disk?
Maybe the first method uses AFP while the second method used WEBDAV??
Also, which IP address are you using? The external address (your public IP), or the internal address of your router?

  • Airport Extreme + USB Drive Disconnecting after first Timemachine backup

    Hello,
    This is the setup;
    * Mac Book Pro's 15" and 17", both early 2009 release, 10.5.8
    * Airport Extreme 7.4.2 with
    * Lacie 1TB Poullon USB Drive
I've made the AP Usb-drive as the Timemachine drive. It always manages to do one back up but during the next backup the drive disconnects and I have to reboot both the macbook and ap to get it connected again.
Airport isn't working that good all together - the max speed on WiFi I get is 25Mbps, eventhough with a LAN wire connected to AP I get 97Mbps. The Airport is set up to run with 802.11n only 5Ghz, multicast rate 6 Mbps, 25% transmit power and with wide channels.
Could someone tell me which kind of setup is the best and why does the drive keep disconnecting during the second backup?

Im having similar problem and have a lacie drive? i have great performance from the router and my iphones however.
I dont have to reboot the MBPs. i unplug and plug the router and then reconnect the drive in the finder then go to time machine and reselect the drive and it works then fails at some point. happens on all my drives. could be a time machine problem could be an airport problem. could be the disk going to sleep.
I think its time to call apple and report the problem.
I am going to try and connect the drive to the laptops for a day and see if it does the increments directly.
