Can't copy project to external HD

Hi--
I am trying to free up space on my daughter's iBook (G3). I read on support, that ideally you should be able to drag the starred movie project onto the external HD and copy it that way. I keep getting a warning that says, cannot copy "icon, because the name is too long or has characters..." that's all I remember, sorry. The title of the movie is pretty normal looking. The HD is formatted for MAc OS extended, so I don't think that is the problem. Can you help?
thanks so much

Hi Matt--
thanks for writing. I finally just trashed the movie and that made room. However, you asked an interesting question about the HD drive being formatted
correctly and I think I should figure that out. I think it is, but how would I know (when I "get info" it doesn't say "extended". If it is not tformatted correctly, then how do I doo it. It did take iPhoto pix into it, so I know that it works for some things.
Thanks so much

  • Can't open project on External Harddrive

I'm using iMovie 5.0.2 and working on a project that is saved on an external hard drive.
After 6 hours of editing, the power cord came out of the hard drive. I connected everything and tried to save the project. I then got scared and stopped the saving. Now I can't open the project. I can't save it to another part of the hard drive and open it. Every time I try to open the movie it says :
    A project file is missing.
The file "_" couldn't be opened
and is being skipped. Click Ignore All
to skip any remaining missing file messages.
The iMovie quits. If I can find the files- all won't be lost. Plus, I have a high res quicktime file saved of the raw footage. But, I would like NOT to lose that 6 hours of work.
Can I open this file? Did I mess it up? Where are the video clips saved? I can't find them. I have iMovie on my laptop and the project saved on the hard drive.
Thanks for any help. This is why I'm so done with video Just a few more projects to do. After 15 years this type of crap drives me crazy.
    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't do anything more with your iMovie. Don't try another save, as that can write over your last good saves. You MAY be able to retrieve the prior save. Hopefully, you saved as you went along during these 6 hours so you can retrieve a very recent saved version.
(These types of accidents have made me realize the importance of backing up my movies-in-progress as I am editing them. I did not do this in the past, and now I try to do it at least at the end of each editing session so that not all would be lost. I had an external drive fail suddenly and all of my movies were gone. Fortunately, I was able to reimport the original footage, but frequent saves would have been best).
In iM6, you can access the project files by control or right-clicking on the star icon and selecting 'show package contents' to let you see the movie files. One or more of the icons will have a tilde ~ or several of them. Those are prior versions of the iMovie, and can be used to get back to a prior save.
In iM5, I think you can just directly open the project files and see the movie files as ~ files with the name as "yourmovie.mov" It might be in a Cache folder and might be called "Timeline Movie.mov." If you don't see anything like a Cache folder, try doing the process for iM6 above. If you see multiple .mov files with ~ and then more ~~ or even ~~~ those are more versions. You may have to try one or more of these to find the latest one possible.
Once you locate the .mov version of your movie, open a new iMovie project and drop in one of the .mov~ movies into it and see if it works. If so, continue editing with this one. This version will be all in one clip, so more editing is a bit more difficult, but not impossible and at least you will have some of your work back.
It's crucial you NOT save the messed-up project right now, for that will destroy the good QuickTime movie, replacing it with a bad "empty" movie.
(Thanks to Karl Peterson for the info re: retrieving prior saved movies).
    Good luck!

  • How can I copy projects and events to an external hard drive from iMovie 10?

I have created a project in iMovie 10, which I would now like to share with a colleague, in a form in which he can edit just like I can.  I do not see a way to copt projects and events to an external hard drive,  the way I could from previous versions of iMovie. Any suggestions?

You can copy an iMovie 10 library to an external volume (HD, Thumb drive etc.) with the Finder so as to share it with a colleague.   You may find the following link helpful:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Before copying the library you have to make sure that all media is in the library.  Media from iTunes, iPhoto and similar are by default linked to my iMovie and not copied to the library.  To resolve this you may need to consolidate media before you copy the library.  See for details:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351
Note that your colleague has to be using the same version of iMovie.  Even different minor updates may cause problems.
    I hope this helps.
    Geoff.

  • I can't copy files to External Hard Drive : Please help..

    Evening,
I've just bought a Macbook and am just getting to grips with it. This is my first question on this forum...the first of many no doubt.
Problem I've got is that I can copy file's from an external hard drive on to the MAC but I can't go back the other way and copy file's from the MAC on to the external hard drive - it says 'New Folder cannot be modified'.
When I go into 'Ownership and Permission' of the external hard drive it says I can read only.
The Hard Drive is a Octigen USB 2.0 drive if that helps..
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help

How confident are you that MacFuse/ntfs-3g is a reliable option for ordinary humans? It is at version 0.2.2, not long out of beta, the FAQ mentions slow write performance and other rough edges (possibly fixed in the current version), and this is a comment by the author as of 1/11/07:
"Small disclaimer: Please note that MacFUSE is a complex piece of software, and it is a work in progress. We believe in releasing early and often, so we're releasing it now so that the community can help us to make it more robust."
I have no need for it whatsoever, but if I did, I would have concerns about using it for a backup drive.

  • Since update: Can´t copy files to external HD anymore

I have a Iomega Network Harddrive (don´t ask me if it´s fat or NTFS formated or server software) and everything worked fine until the latest Patch 10.6.3
I tried to copy stuff to the external HD but failed with following error message now:
The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
    Need help !

    HI,
    Try repairing disk permissions..
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Can't copy applications to external drive

I am trying to manually back up my applications folder. Time Machine is also doing it just fine, but I'm paranoid. So I am just trying to copy all the files to my external USB drive - recently formatted with macos journalled.
    I get the message
The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access "Charles"
or such - various applications won't copy, and it blocks the whole process and stops, as opposed to skipping these files and copying the rest.
I have verified and repaired disk permissions on both disks.
I am logged on as my own account with administrative rights, and it's already prompted me to authenticate in order to copy other applications.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Does Time Machine by default exclude System and Applications Folder (I didn't click any option to exclude those I remembered)? How do I not exclude the Applications folder and System files this time around?
In Time-Travel view when I point it to the Applications folder, it switches to the Volumes folder and the Restore is dimmed. I wonder if it's incompatible because it's not Apple's Time Machine or it's a bug with Moutain Lion (the drive is backing up the new clean install of Mountain Lion now but when I test it, use Migration Assistant if I need to restore things again, it still doesn't see it as a Time Machine backup).
What could be the solution? Should I reinstall my applications again (I guess that's a blessing in disguise, now I can declutter)?
    Thank you.

  • Can't copy folders on external drives

I just can't figure this out.  I have several external drives I use to edit video.  Most are 1TB drives, and I recently got a couple 3TB drives I was hoping to use to consolodate my scratch drives and reorganize my footage, etc.
Ideally, I'd like to just be able to drag the entire contents of the smaller drive over to the bigger one, but I can't, because I keep getting error messages.  Sometimes it's "Cannot complete, [file name] is in use" or I get an "error -50" code.
Before I began the copy, I formatted the destination drive in Mac OS Extended (journaled), and zeroed out the data to protect against bad sectors.  I've scanned the drives since to determine if there are any verification issues (no), and I've tried turning off icon preview and the preview pane, none of it solves the problem.  What the eff is going on here??
    Thanks,
    ~Trav
(I'm using all firewire800 drives.  Currently several LaCie and Western Digital drives, but only trying to copy one at a time)

For the file in use message, open Terminal and try
    lsof -l +L -R -V | grep <path to volume you want to search>
    or
    sudo lsof -l +L -R -V | grep <"path to volume you want to search">
No quotes needed if there are no spaces in the volume name.
You'll have to do some scrolling through the output, but you might find the process or file that's open and quit it.

  • Can't copy files to external hard drive

I have had both my MacBook and external hard drive for over three years now, and have never had a problem. In the last week, my external hard drive stopped letting me copy files onto it. When you try to drag and drop it just comes up with the blocked symbol. I have tested this with other hard drives as well and keep getting the same error. I've read other forums where it seems the answer is just to reformat the hard drive to the correct format, but I've never had a problem before so it seems strange that the format would just suddenly change.
    All suggestions welcome!

me to no problem until nowdays
and the file is movies 1080 so is one file 7-8-9-10 gb
the weird is i see the movie from memory stick
    but i cant copy
i restared but i cant format the memory stick becouse i use it in windows

  • I have no problems copying iMovie Events from one Mac to another, however, how can I copy iMovie Projects from one Mac to another?

I have no problems copying iMovie Events from one Mac to another, however, how can I copy iMovie Projects from one Mac to another?  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you.

This should give you some good insight, I'd probably store them on an External HD on the old machine and then just drag and drop to the new machine.

  • Is there a way to copy & past an entire FCE project to external dr

Is there a way to copy & paste an entire FCE project to an external drive so that I can delete the project on my hard drive and begin another project?

You need to keep the following:
Your *FCE project file* (normally located in your Final Cut Express Documents folder)
Your *captured clips* (normally located in your Final Cut Express Documents / Capture Scratch folder)
Any other *source media files* - photos, sound files, etc. - that you used in your project.
You can copy the files to any folder you wish to copy them to.
There is no need to keep any of the render files. You can always rerender your project as long as you have your FCE project file and the source clips & other source media that you used in the project.

  • How can I copy an existing project?

I am using RoboHelp 9 on a virtual server.
I copied the entire folder of original project.
Named New Folder the name of 2nd project.
Can;t find copied project when I view open projects in robohelp.
I am very new to this but I desparately need to copy my original project asap as of next week, there will be two versions of the product and I will need to keep the two projects separate.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi there
    You're on the right track.
Copy the folder to a new location.
From RoboHelp, click File > Open and navigate to the new location.
Open the ProjectName.xpj file you should find there.
After you open the project, click File > Rename Project and give it a new name.
    Cheers... Rick

  • How can i copy files from one external hard disk to another using macbook pro with retina display

How can i copy files from one external hard drive to another using macbook pro with retina display?

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • OSB : How can we copy  actions from one project folder to other projects?

How can we copy actions from one project folder to other projects in OSB?
    For eg:
I have a service call out action in Project1/proxySer1
I want to copy this to Project2/proxySer2.
Espicially, in our case error handling callout is common to all of our projects and we should be able to copy from one to another.

    Thank you for the reply.
It was my fault. I was on two different servers, while i was doing this and so didn't work. But copy /past action works as you suggested.
Can I select multiple actions from one stage and paste to different proxy service? I have too many options to copy/paste and hence I have this question.
Is there any other way of copying all selected actions in one stage to another, but not the complete stage itselft?
