Can't copy some files from FileVault Sparsebundle in Time Machine backup

I've got filevault turned on for my mac Mac Mini (10.6.2). I'm using Time Machine to back up to a firewire drive. There's plenty of space - my Mini hd has 250 Gb of 500 used, and I'm backing up to a 750Gb partition on the external drive. The initial backup went OK, and when I logged out it backed up my filevault-protected home directory. When I logged back in, I was able to browse the Backups.backupdb on the external drive, go to the users directory, and open the sparsebundle that was my filevault-protected home directory (after entering the password). I can browse through this backup of my home directory. However, when I try copying files from the backup of the home directory, I get an error:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "(filename)" can't be read or written. (Error code -36).
I get this error for some files, but not all of them. I've tried running BatChmod to reset permissions on all files in my home directory, and then erasing the backup drive and having Time Machine recreate the backup. However I'm still having this problem.
I have also tried restoring the entire hard drive (to a 3rd external HD) by booting from the 10.6 DVD and going through the full-restore process. All of my files are fine when I restore using this method.
Is there something I should do so that I can restore individual files from the backup of my filevault sparsebundle? It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.
Thanks,

Don't try to restore files individually by hand using finder. TM backups are protected by very restrictive ACLs and are not designed to be accessed that way.
you can restore the whole sparse bundle with the home directory from TM interface. you should be logged in as a different user when you do this. the easiest is to be logged in as root so as not to deal with any permissions issues.
another thing you might try is doing it from command line instead of finder. this is also not the designed way but might work where finder copy doesn't.
to do this run the following terminal command after you mount the sparse bundle with backups of the home directory
ditto --noacl path/to/source/file /path/to/target/directory
here path/to/source file is the path to the file in the sparse bundle you want to restore and path/to target directory is the path to the folder where you want to copy it to. an easy way to get the path to an item is to drag that item to the terminal window. make sure that you have all the spaces correctly in the command.

  • Can't copy some files from Windows 7 to Mac OSX over network

    Hi,
I'm running the latest version of Max OSX v10.8.4 on a brand new Macbook Pro.
I have followed the setup instructions at http://www.7tutorials.com/how-change-workgroup-mac-os-x-easy-networking to access my Macbook from Windows, and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/24950/how-to-share-a-folder-in-os-x-with-windows/ to share some folders from my Macbook to Windows.
I am now trying to copy some files from my Windows 7 Pro (SP1) computer to my Mac, and have hit the following problems:
I can view my Macbook in my list of local networked computers on WIndows, but I cannot access it. Clicking on it causes Windows 7 to try and access it, but then I get a message after a minute saying the network path could not be found. However, if I manually enter the IP address of my Macbook in the Windows address bar (\\192.168.0.191), I can view and access all the shared folders. I can never access the Macbook via it's computer name (\\MACBOOK-ROB).
I cannot copy some files from Windows to my Macbook shared folders via Windows. There is nothing to distinguish these files from the hundereds of other files that I have successfully copied to my Macbook. They are pictures and music with no special characters in the filenames, not overly long filenames or folder paths, no access restrictions, or any other security restriction that I can see. However, every single attempt to copy these files to my Macbook results in WIndows reporting that access to the destination was denied.
I have tried both these above scenarios on WiFi and Ethernet, and the results are the same.
    So:
Why am I unable to access my Macbook by it's computer name on the network? How can Windows see it, but not access it?
What are the limitations on transferring files over SMB that is (presumably) causing these specific files to fail?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a fix for inability to copy files. I had the same problem moving a lot of old files across my LAN from a Windows XP machine to a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. After confirming copy of some special file, I would get an error that terminated the copy operation, and info on the Mac side would show a locked folder.
I finally decided to eliminate all special files on the Windows side, before copying, by running
         attrib -s -h -r /s /d [drive or folder]\*.*
in a command window. Running attrib /?  tells what the arguments mean, but it doesn't explain that you need the *.* to make the command go through the hierarchy clearing the special attributes on all the files.
After I did that, and then used drag and drop between two Windows Explorer windows (one on the Windows drive, on on the target drive on the Mac), the whole move operation ran to completion without stopping either for error or to ask for confirmation.
I do not have a fix for the inability to access some computers by name rather than by IP address. I'm looking into the possibility of activating bind on the Mac but I haven't done anything yet.

  • HT201250 can I copy and past from a doc in time machine

I'm a writer and I'd like to go back to an old version of a story and copy a chunk out to use in my current version.
Is there a way to do this without wiping out what I have?

You need not — and should not — do this in the Finder.
In Time Machine, select the old version and right-click. Choose Restore To… and choose a different location for the restored file.

  • I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

  • How can I copy mp3 files from my Itunes library to an SD card for use in a non-apple phone?

How can I copy mp3 files from my Itunes library to an SD card for use in a non-apple phone?  I can physically copy the tunes as mp3's but the phone does not seem to be able to play all of them.   Do I need to copy an entire album or can I just pick & choose individual songs?   The phone is question is an LG running who knows what for an operating system.

AAC is Advanced Audio Coding.  Basically it's a format that sounds better than MP3 but doesn't take up as much space as a lossless format (like you'd have on a CD).  More than likely you've had that encoding turned on when you ripped your music into itunes (it's the default encoder).  Therefore your LG phone won't play them.
You need to turn off the AAC format by going to the iTunes menu, Preferences, General (at the top), then clicking the "Import Preferences" button.  Change the AAC Encoder to MP3 Encoder.  After that you'll have to make MP3 copies of your songs by right clicking them and selecting "Create MP3 Version."  You'll get a copy of the song that should transfer to your SD card and have MP3 encoding.  Hopefully your phone will play that.

  • Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?

Message title says it: Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?
I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base that says these two options no longer work or still do.
I do not have a system capable of running Lion, but I need to know the answer nonetheless.

Gee, I don't know: "paste attachments mail Lion"? ;-)
One further question, if I may: in Panther (which is where I've aggregated nearly 7 years of mail), if you copy more than one file in the Finder, switch to Mail, and paste the files into a new message, only the file names paste in. If you copy one file and paste it into a Mail message, you get the file, not just the name. Is that still true, or has that (IMHO) bug been fixed since 10.3.9?

how do I import my video files from old iPhoto - in time machine - to new iPhoto?  Photoes came across, video said incompatible.
i have moved from a mac pro to a mac mini,
Mini now has mavericks and latest iLife stuff, I clicked import, was all good, then at end, no videos came across.
Is Mavericks,/iPhoto having a compatibiltiy issue with some video formats....???
Your help is appreciated gang.: )

Please describe exactly what you did. In moving to a new machine no importing is involved. The best way is to simply connect the two computers together and drag the iPhoto library from the old one to the pictures folder go the new one and launch iPhoto

  • How can I make I-cloud back up only the files created since the last Time-Machine backup?

    Hi everyone,
So, I wish to use time-machine to back up every six weeks or so. This means a whole range of files could be lost if my wonderfully fast but terrifyingly unrecoverable solid state hard drive packs up.
Has anyone any idea how I can make Icloud only backup files created since the last time machine backup?
    Best
    Danny

Automator is not the right solution.
Use a folder action script. Apple has an example here: (Auto-backup Script):
    http://www.apple.com/applescript/folderactions/05.html
the steps might have been written for 10.3, so the steps may not be 100% right, but this will do what you want.

  • Are files in "Latest" folder in Time Machine backup full versions

I need to transfer several gigabytes of files from a Time Machine Backup of an older iMac to a new Mac Mini. Can I just connect the external drive with the Time Machine backup on it to the Mac Mini, open the Backups.backupdb folder and copy all of the files in the "Latest" backup? Will these be full versions of the files? I spoke with a couple of Apple Support techs and one said that all of the backups were "threaded" together, thus my concern about getting full versions when I just drag and drop from the Backups.backupdb folder rather than going through Time Machine or Migration Assistant. The other tech said yes, the files in the "Latest" folder in the Backups.backupdb would be full versions, but I'm still not convinced.
Would prefer not to go the Migration Assistant or "restoring" through Time Machine. In some of my tests I wasn't comfortable with the way it worked.
Has anybody done this before - copying files directly from the Backups.backupdb folder rather than "restoring" through Time Machine?

  • How do i retrieve photos from iphoto on a time machine backup?

how do i retrieve photos from iphoto on a time machine backup?

To restore the entire library do the following:
For a single photo you need to  know the file name?  If so you can extract photos one at a time out of the TM backups for import into iPhoto.  You would do it as follows:
1 - download and launch  Find Any File.
2 - select the Time Machine external hard drive.
3 - enter the file name and search. It will take longer than a normal search due to the nature of the Time Machine structure, maybe up to 1 miinute.
4 - select the file that is in the Masters or Originals folder in the search results window and drag to the Desktop where it can be imported into iPhoto:

  • Can't copy all files from a CD-R

I have a number of CD-Rs of family photos.  I made the disks on a Dell PC with a horizontally mounted CD-RW Drive in 2005.  I recently tried to load them onto my iMAC, but I could only copy about half of the files before the drive hung-up.  The drive would often make noise and then slow to a near inaudible crawl and then say the file(s) could not be copied.
I was able to copy the missing files to a memory stick at a local library on an HP PC with a horizontally mounted drive, so the disks are OK.  Interestingly, I had trouble with the disks at a library with iMAC-like HP PCs, i.e., all-in-one monitor/pc/optical-drive with a vertically mounted drive.
Other drive-related problems: (1) friends have trouble playing Audio CD-Rs I've made for them, (2) I can't copy a DVD-R with MackTheRipper (PowerPC), the DVD-R plays fine.
Is this a drive issue, a drive orientation issue, or something else?
    Thanks for your help.
