Can't corrrect some files under repairs permission since 10.5.6

Hope, someone can help me. Since i have updated to 10.5.6 i have always 4 files that cannot be repairs, and wonder if i should worry about it.. My computer works apparently fine. the report of Disk utility says :
Reading permissions database.
Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.
Warning : SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afload" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning : SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks?Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning : SUID file "usr/bin/setregion" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning : SUID file "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MasOS/LPRIOMHelper" has been modifeid and will not be repaired.
Thanks for your feedback.

Won't it just keep saying "the file has been changed and will not be repaired"?
That message appears only if the file has been changed from what the database/BOM says it should be. Permissions are not part of files themselves but metadata about the files stored in the file system.
So yes, the messages will continue to appear until the database/BOM info matches the file, & it is possible that the permissions for those files will somehow become mis-set & not corrected by the permissions repair routine.
However, keep the following in mind:
1. Most of these files are fundamental to the operation of the OS. If the permissions are so mis-set that the OS can't use them, you will probably know about it without running the repair.
2. The likelihood of those (or any other system file's) permissions becoming mis-set is extremely low. The repair is without a doubt the most over-prescribed troubleshooting step for OS X problems, largely because in the early days of the OS (circa 10.0 & 10.1) some poorly written third party installers messed up system permissions & it was necessary to clean up the mess they left behind with a post-install repair. Currently, if something does mess up these permissions, it is likely that it has trashed more than permissions & the repair alone won't fix the problem.
3. Even if you do use the combo updater to update the database/BOM, you are likely to see these messages again as soon as you install any new updates that patch any system files that the current combo updater does not include. Given the frequency of the release schedule of complete OS updates (be they combo, delta, or patch versions) vs. small maintenance & security updates, it is unlikely that any up-to-date system will be completely free of these messages for long, if at all.
The bottom line is you can run the combo updater if you want, but it is extremely unlikely to gain you any real, practical, or lasting benefit.

I first received this message when trying to upgrade Pro Tools from 8.0 to 8.0.1 a prerelease for snow leopard. I tried numerous things such as repairing permissions, as well as some pro tools specific things and to no avail. Still got the same error message.
So then I tried completely uninstalling and deleting all things pro tools from my computer. After a clean uninstall and removing all traces of pro tools I proceeded to try and re-install pro tools from my pro tools 8 disk. About a minute into the process I get the EXACT same error message.
I know this issue has been going on since even before snow leopard. I really need to get pro tools installed and running again or at least be able to get the program installed. I've isolated pro tools out of the mix because its been several different installers and even an installer from a dvd. I know this is a Snow Leopard or plain OS based problem. I have repaired permissions, created a brand new user, wiped clean and started over. I don't know anything else to do. PLEASE HELP???!!!

Hi Dean@mac & welcome to the forums...
Any specifics why it wants to install to / instead of Applications, as an example?
    Seen these threads yet?
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?search=Go&q=pro+tools
One thing to help investigate the issue is to create a new user just for testing that is stock with no add-on's etc., then login there and try to install. If it works there you can bet there is something unique to your original account that is borking that install - otherwise the issue is most likely global to your system and you might be out of luck until/unless a reportedly qualified version becomes available, etc.
    Good luck in any case.

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

It seems like I'd be adding one more layer of complexity to the Vista machine...
Not sure how the Vista machine is involved in this, since these are drivers for the Mac.

If the filename starts with a dot (.thisfile), then it will be hidden on the Mac.
You can use a 3rd party App, such as EasyFind to search for the file on your Mac, and then re-name (remove the dot)

The clips that are offline in the timeline aren't playing back correctly, they just play as still images in the canvas. please help! i've tried restarting and reconnecting so many times. Again, in the browser, none of the clips say offline.

  • Can't copy some files from FileVault Sparsebundle in Time Machine backup

I've got filevault turned on for my mac Mac Mini (10.6.2). I'm using Time Machine to back up to a firewire drive. There's plenty of space - my Mini hd has 250 Gb of 500 used, and I'm backing up to a 750Gb partition on the external drive. The initial backup went OK, and when I logged out it backed up my filevault-protected home directory. When I logged back in, I was able to browse the Backups.backupdb on the external drive, go to the users directory, and open the sparsebundle that was my filevault-protected home directory (after entering the password). I can browse through this backup of my home directory. However, when I try copying files from the backup of the home directory, I get an error:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "(filename)" can't be read or written. (Error code -36).
I get this error for some files, but not all of them. I've tried running BatChmod to reset permissions on all files in my home directory, and then erasing the backup drive and having Time Machine recreate the backup. However I'm still having this problem.
I have also tried restoring the entire hard drive (to a 3rd external HD) by booting from the 10.6 DVD and going through the full-restore process. All of my files are fine when I restore using this method.
Is there something I should do so that I can restore individual files from the backup of my filevault sparsebundle? It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.
    Thanks,

Don't try to restore files individually by hand using finder. TM backups are protected by very restrictive ACLs and are not designed to be accessed that way.
you can restore the whole sparse bundle with the home directory from TM interface. you should be logged in as a different user when you do this. the easiest is to be logged in as root so as not to deal with any permissions issues.
another thing you might try is doing it from command line instead of finder. this is also not the designed way but might work where finder copy doesn't.
to do this run the following terminal command after you mount the sparse bundle with backups of the home directory
    ditto --noacl path/to/source/file /path/to/target/directory
here path/to/source file is the path to the file in the sparse bundle you want to restore and path/to target directory is the path to the folder where you want to copy it to. an easy way to get the path to an item is to drag that item to the terminal window. make sure that you have all the spaces correctly in the command.
It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.

  • How can I print some files in ipad

    Dear tutors
I am using Airport express to enjoy airplay and itunes in Hi-Fi system.
My printer that doesn't support airprint is connectted to the Airport express.
So I can print my file to the printer when I use window PC.
Recently, I bought ipad2 and I'd like to print some files in ipad
    How can I do?
    Is it possible?
    Thank you..

I think the Airport express acts as a wireless printer server because I can print when the PC is turned-off
Actually, I'd like to print some files from my ipad2 to my printer that dosen't support Airprint and that is connectted to the airport express.
There are apps on the appstore that allow you to print to non airprint printers.--> I could'd find the Apps, would you tell me the name of the Apps?
    thank you

  • Can't copy some files from Windows 7 to Mac OSX over network

    Hi,
I'm running the latest version of Max OSX v10.8.4 on a brand new Macbook Pro.
I have followed the setup instructions at http://www.7tutorials.com/how-change-workgroup-mac-os-x-easy-networking to access my Macbook from Windows, and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/24950/how-to-share-a-folder-in-os-x-with-windows/ to share some folders from my Macbook to Windows.
I am now trying to copy some files from my Windows 7 Pro (SP1) computer to my Mac, and have hit the following problems:
I can view my Macbook in my list of local networked computers on WIndows, but I cannot access it. Clicking on it causes Windows 7 to try and access it, but then I get a message after a minute saying the network path could not be found. However, if I manually enter the IP address of my Macbook in the Windows address bar (\\192.168.0.191), I can view and access all the shared folders. I can never access the Macbook via it's computer name (\\MACBOOK-ROB).
I cannot copy some files from Windows to my Macbook shared folders via Windows. There is nothing to distinguish these files from the hundereds of other files that I have successfully copied to my Macbook. They are pictures and music with no special characters in the filenames, not overly long filenames or folder paths, no access restrictions, or any other security restriction that I can see. However, every single attempt to copy these files to my Macbook results in WIndows reporting that access to the destination was denied.
I have tried both these above scenarios on WiFi and Ethernet, and the results are the same.
    So:
Why am I unable to access my Macbook by it's computer name on the network? How can Windows see it, but not access it?
What are the limitations on transferring files over SMB that is (presumably) causing these specific files to fail?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a fix for inability to copy files. I had the same problem moving a lot of old files across my LAN from a Windows XP machine to a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. After confirming copy of some special file, I would get an error that terminated the copy operation, and info on the Mac side would show a locked folder.
I finally decided to eliminate all special files on the Windows side, before copying, by running
         attrib -s -h -r /s /d [drive or folder]\*.*
in a command window. Running attrib /?  tells what the arguments mean, but it doesn't explain that you need the *.* to make the command go through the hierarchy clearing the special attributes on all the files.
After I did that, and then used drag and drop between two Windows Explorer windows (one on the Windows drive, on on the target drive on the Mac), the whole move operation ran to completion without stopping either for error or to ask for confirmation.
I do not have a fix for the inability to access some computers by name rather than by IP address. I'm looking into the possibility of activating bind on the Mac but I haven't done anything yet.

  • I can't put some files in the Trash

    Hello everyone,
Unfortunately, I'm having some trouble putting some files in the trash...
They say they're adobe dreamweaver files, but I've never installed dreamweaver - I was only flagged up about them when I tried to install dreamweaver, and was told that it was already installed and I needed to remove any files etc.
So I did a search for all adobe or dreamweaver files, and sure enough there they were. I consequently tracked to whack them all in the bin, but to no avail. The computer would say "this will permanently delete the file, are you sure?" - I would click yes, and it froze for a moment every time I tried and then popped up with this error message:
"Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred
    Error code -61"
    Here's a screen grab:
    http://img78.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture2cb3.png (the error message)
http://img213.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture3sx0.png (the files in question are highlighted)
If anyone knows how I could delete these, that would be extremely helpful...
I've tried the get info, unlocking trick, and there's been no joy there - the read only options are faded out and not possible to change. I've also tried TrashIt, which was recommended, and didn't work...
Any ideas would be very kind, thanks...

I can't find my OSX disk
I don't really understand this (that disk shows up in the screenshot you uploaded of the Finder window resulting from your search), but I also think it's irrelevant.
I went back and read your original post, and I saw this: 'The computer would say "this will permanently delete the file, are you sure?"'. I've since seen another entry in this Topic List which indicates that you get such a message when your .Trash folder is gone. (Of course, there may be other reasons why you can get the message too.) If that's true, then you really need to fix it. One easy way to find out is, try creating an ordinary file in your home directory, and then drag it to the trash? Does that work? I suspect you'll get the same message about "this will permanently delete the file, are you sure". But if you say "yes", it should succeed in deleting it. But it does indicate that your .Trash folder is probably gone.
if I create a new account that is also an administrator, then bin them, are you sure this will work?
(I assume that by "bin them", you mean "drag them to the trash".) In fact, you can just create a new account that isn't an administrator (unlike what I said in my previous post). If that account drags the stuff to its trash, Finder will prompt it for the name of an administrator account (like, yours), and its password. If you provide it, then empty that account's trash, the stuff should go away just fine.
Incidentally, the Subject of the item I mentioned above is "Trash deletes any file without emptying".
If I'm right about your trash not working, and you want a way to "fix" it, you can get back. Or maybe make a new problem.

  • Can I delete the files under C:\Users\MyAccount\CS6 Master Collection\Adobe CS6

    After installation I've been left with a ton of files under C:\Users\Nathan\CS6 Master Collection\Adobe CS6 - 8.3GB.
Are these files actually needed? They seem to mostly be setup files. Can I just delete them after installation?

    Hi Nathan,
The default location for software installation is the program files folder and the default location for the extracted files is usually desktop from where the installation is initiated. You might have chosen the aforementioned folder for extraction.
If you have already installed the software you can go ahead and delete this folder.

  • Can't see some files, even though I know they are there

    This is a strange one.
A couple of days ago, I began not being able to see most of the folders in my documents folder. I can see some, but not most.
I know the files are there, because I can access recently used files from the applications like Word and Excel that have a recent files list. And, they are working fine.
I just can't see the bulk of my folders. I've checked the things that occurred to me on security and sharing, and I don't think I changed anything or added any new software.
Any guesses? Thanks for your help.
    Mitch Goldstein

Got my answer. I had moved the files (or someone in my family did), and they were deeply buried in another folder. Thanks.
