Can't create a computer to computer network

Hi,
I have a 1.8Ghz iMac G5 and my partner recent bought a iBook 12". The iBook came with built in airport and so I puchased a airport extreme card for the iMac so we could wirelessly connect the two computers.
The iMac has 10.3.9 and the iBook has 10.4.3.
I've tried everything I can think of but I can't seem to get the computers to see each other. I've created a network on either machine but can't see it on the other.
My thoughts are that there must be a fault with one of the cards, any other ideas?
Thanks
Olivier

Rather than create a computer to computer wireless network it can be easier to use one of the Macs as software base station instead and allow the other Mac to connect to this Mac created wireless network.
On the iMac
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Tab
Share internet from (anything) via Airport
Your iBook should be able to connect to this iMac created wireless network.

  • CAN'T CREATE A WINDOWS 7 COMPUTER'S "HOMEGROUP" OR CHANGE ITS "WORKGROUP"

The Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit machine is connected to a "Home" (Windows 7 nomenclature)/"Private" (Windows Vista nomenclature) network. Yet, when I try to create a Homegroup (which I'm told in the Network and Sharing Center it is ready
to create) I get a message that "a homegroup can only be created on a home network". But the computer IS on a Home network, is discoverable and is sharing everything. Oddly enough, in the Windows Explorer, listed as being on the network, IT IS NOT
ACCESSIBLE TO ITSELF! This is the message I get when clicking on any of the computers on the network:
"\\[ComputerName] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have accesss permissions.
The specified network provider name is invalid."
When I tried to change the computer's Workgroup I get "A general network error". I have also found that ""Windows could not start the PNRP Machnie Name Publication Service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied."
What can I do to fix this problem?

    Hello dazimon,
If my understanding is right, you can access share folder from other computer, but you can’t open localhost share folder from the Network in the Windows Explorer.
Do you mean that if you click other computer in the Network will receive the error message ‘\\[ComputerName] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have accesss
    permissions.
The specified network provider name is invalid.’  ?
Please check if you have the permission to access other computer.
In your last reply, do you mean that you have Cisco Firewall ACL to deny the network traffic?
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories, and run Homegroup troubleshooter
    2. Temporarily disable the Cisco firewall and check if the issue still exists
    3. We could turn off the Windows Firewall to check if the Windows firewall block the access

  • Can't create VLAN's with Cisco Network Assistant

    Hello everyone
I have a problem with my newest Switch, a WS-C2960X-48TS-L
Normaly I can programm all my Switches with Cisco Network Assistant. But now I have a problem with creating VLAN's. I can create them, safe them but after a refresh, all the new VLAN's are gone!
I updated the CNA to the newest Build 6.0 and updated the Switch to 15.2(2)E, but nothing helps!
Over the CLI I can do everything, but this is not a option for me! To programm sometimes a switch CNA is perfect for me! If it works!!
    Thanks
    Tobi

yes I can programm the vlan's over CLI. That's works. I have not tested this if its really works, but the VLAN's are programmed.
hmm I checked the STP / VTP settings with a second identical Switch, but there are no differents. Made a backup of one Switch and restore on the other One, but I'm still not able to create VLAN's.
however, I contacted my vendor today, he tell me that it shouldt be a problem to take back the switch.
    Best regards
    Tobi

  • How can I Create Hyperlinks on a computer generated Table Of Contents?

I am trying to create hyperlinks on a TOC that was generated in InDesign CS3. It will allow me to make each item a new hyperlink destination, but I would like it to be just a new hyperlink. Is there a way to do this without having to re-type the whole Table of Contents?

Are the hyperlinks you want to make supposed to go to specific pages of the document, or to a url.
If it's to go to pages of the document, then click the Create Bookmarks when creating the TOC, it's in the bottom left, you may need to Show Options in the TOC dialog box.
If it's for a URL, or to link to a different page other than what the TOC points to, then you can
    New Hyperlink Destination
    Choose URL/Page
    Insert a unique name
    Insert the url/page no.
    Then say ok
    Go to Hyperlink Options
    Type: URL
Name: Choose the unique name you've created
URL: it should show up as what you've put in the Name, if not just type it in
    similar for page no.
Remember to inlcude bookmarks and hyperlinks when creating the PDF too.

  • Can I create a portable ad-hoc network between an iPad and other wireless devices?

I have a iPad that uses a third-part app to connect to and read data from a wireless hard drive.  This works great in my house over my local network.   What I want to do is create an ad-hoc network to use in my car or other remote site to basically just allow the wireless connection between the two devices, with no internet connection.   I have used an ad-hoc network in the past to sync data between my iPad and my iMac, so theoretically it should be possible, but I can't seem to find out how to do it using the iPad to create the network.  Is there a support article discussing this?   Has anyone out there tried doing this?   Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, but I must not have made myself clear.  I'm not looking for internet or 3G service.  All I want is a temporary network to share data over.  I have lots of movies and videos stored on a wireless hard drive and I just want to be able to access them in the car while on trips or on vacation.  It works in my house even when we lose our internet connection.  The cable modem is off-line and the Airport Extreme light glows orange, but the wireless network still works.  I guess that I could set up an iPhone as a hotspot and pay extra for a service I would only need sporadically, but I'm hoping that there is an alternative.

  • Can't create airport/wifi internet-sharing network with other laptop

I have an iBook running Tiger 10.4.11 connected to the net with ethernet. The internet connection comes through a radio antenna which acts like a router to which I don't have access.
I want to share my internet connection, and to be able to transfer files, between the iBook and another laptop. I've tried it with two - one running Fedora 11 (mine) and one running Windows XP, and have the same problems with both.
I turn wifi on on the ibook and linux laptop. I turn on internet sharing from built-in ethernet to airport in System Preferences. First I try it with no encryption. 'Other settings may interfere with internet sharing' shows up; it tells me to enable Personal Web Sharing, which I do. When I click start Little Snitch tells me natd wants to connect to 10.0.2.1 (presumably the router in the antenna), which I allow. I try to connect with the linux laptop and it tries then disconnects.
    1) isn't personal web sharing for serving web pages? — why is it necessary here at all?
    2) what am I doing wrong in making my network work?
If I enable encryption using WEP, the other password asks me for authenticication, I put in the password, and it then tells me the network has been disconnected.
    3) is WEP the best encryption I can use from Tiger?
    4) I think the problem's with Tiger (both laptops can connect to other wifi networks not set up by me). Is there a piece of free software I can use to share the connection instead of the built-in one?
I can't make a functional network in reverse either (i.e. setting it up on the other laptop and trying to connect wirelessly with the ibook).
What I am trying to do is precisely this (http://my.safaribooksonline.com/0596009135/runmacx2-CHP-11-SECT-13) — it just doesn't work.

When I click start Little Snitch tells me natd wants to connect to 10.0.2.1 (presumably the router in the antenna), which I allow. I try to connect with the linux laptop and it tries then disconnects.
Back on that part, at that Point the Mac is a NATD Router, don't try to connect to the other computers.
On the Mac, with Internet Sharing enabled, open NetInfo Manager in Applications>Utilities.
From there on out, it's a bit foggy, but iirc Config>DHCP>Subnets><the subnet>, then down where it says com.apple.nat... what does it report for IPs?
If it were say 10.43.29.1 then the others trying to join should have that as a Router/Gateway, and then 10.43.29.2, 10.43.29.3, etc. as IPs.
Apple says you can't set it Manually, but I've had it work a couple of times.

  • Creating folder with permission in network

    help me!!
    I have problem..
how can I create a folder in the network with permission that only the
admin and the users can only view?

the main suggestion is this: don't use dots in folder names. there are plenty of other characters to use. this just confuses the system into thinking its a file extension. in the short term reset your launch services database. delete the file home directory/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    see if that helps.

  • I can not create a computer-to-computer network

I am trying to create a computer-to-computer network to share files between my laptop and imac but everytime I start doing this the computer remains endless waiting in the creation process (both on the laptop and the imac) I switched the security in the meantime from WPA2 to WEP which should be ok as I understood.
So please help what should I do

Don't use WEP - it can be cracked in about ten minutes. Use WPA2, this isn't likely to be the problem.
The method of setting up File Sharing between computers (ethernet or wi-fi) is outlined here:

  • No security when creating computer to computer network?

No you are not alone in experiencing this problem...
My workaround involves using an Airport Express to create the secure network.

  • Error creating computer-to-computer network

Hello all, is there a fix for this issue yet?
Creating computer-to-computer networks over Airport is broken in SL for many many users!
Ad-hoc networking over wifi is essential for many iphone applications, come on Apple, sort this out?

Ok, thanks ... So Apple doesn't actually read these boards?
I've perused the numerous pages of numerous threads about the problem, and seen the numerous unhelpful replies.
Sorry, but i'm not cool with this. Apple has progressively crippled my computer's functionality with firmware/software updates. First it was the superdrive, (firmware borked by update, had to be replaced) now ad-hoc networking. These are known issues which have affected thousands of people, and have been discussed in these boards extensively. Discussions are often marked as "Solved" and locked down, when it is clear that the only solution is replacement of affected hardware as it is simply not supported by Apple anymore. This is a tactic to force people to buy new Macs. Several Mac users I know do not tinker, they just want ti to work, so they tend to buy a new Mac every 2-3 years because the "old" one has slowed down (usually due to a full hard drive) - or - in some cases, they accepted an Apple update.
The iPhone is a premium smartphone and its wifi connectivity with the Mac is much advertised. Guess what, it doesn't work for many who upgraded to Snow Leopard- yeah, "Error creating computer-to-computer network"
There is no solution other than replacing the laptop's Airport card (an operation too daunting for most users) or messing around wih windows Atheros firmware flashers . For most people it really means go back to Leopard, and if you don't know how to do that and your machine is out of warranty, tough.
I'm sorry if this isn't the place for complaining, i have already contacted Apple about it but the site says told not to expect a response. Maybe if enough people have the sme issues and make enough noise something can be done.
This must be a very easy thing to fix in the OS but the fix is probably blocked by some policy to accelerate the obsolescence of Macs. Sooner rather than later, your Mac wil be "legacy".

before upgrading to snow leopard airport worked fine and i could create a computer to computer network so i could use my ipod touch. now that i have upgraded i cant create a network and i keep on getting there was a error creating your computer to computer network can anyone help me fix this annoying problem please.
i wish i had have stayed on loepard i had no problems at all.

What have you done to try to create the network? Are you able to connect to the internet using Airport? For starters, maybe [this read|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8339.html] will help.

  • New 27" iMac:  Airport - cannot create Computer to Computer Network

    Howdy,
    I recently upgraded from 24" iMac (10.6.2) to a new 27" iMac (10.6.2).
Unlike the old 24" iMac (flawless Airport WiFi) the new 27" will not allow
me to create a Computer-to-Computer WiFi Network...... required to establish
WiFi connection for my iPhone 3G.
Have tried all channels 1-13... with no success. (also all combinations with & w/o Security)
However, If I switch on a Airport Express unit .... the 27" iMac will join with that Network
This is baffling me...... has anyone got an answer... or is it a SL bug ?
Is anyone else having this same problem?

That's funny, cause I had no problems connecting to wifi until I updated to 10.6.4. Now my iMac doesn't see ANY wifi networks
    Don,
I can only re-confirm that the Mac OSX 10.6.4 update... has completely resolved all my WiFi issues I had with this 27" iMac (C2D) .... which was endured for some 5.5 months - since its delivery.
I cannot account for your Machine.... However, there does seem to be a few variations on the 10.6.4 update ? Perhaps you could check which version you have applied ?
Good Luck... hope your problem does not last as long as mine did !!

I know it's Valentine's Day, but before you get your wife fixed up the first thing you need to do is recover the deleted albums for your own library.  See if the files are elsewhere on your hard drive, or in the Recycle Bin.  When you find them, get them back into your own library.  Now you are ready to help your wife.
As noted above, you can have two libraries in one Windows user account via the Shift-Start approach, but if you both use your libraries regularly, that becomes annoying quickly.  It is better to set her up with her own Windows user account. She can have her own iTunes library there.
Get a copy of your entire iTunes folder to start her off.  She can delete stuff she doesn't want without messing you up.
