Can't create aggregate device in SL

Just installed SL and i'm having problems with Audio MIDI Setup, i need to create a new aggregate device to use my mixer etc but when i click the + symbol, the new device will flash in the list and immediately disappear. Is this a bug or am i doing something wrong? This worked fine for me with the same setup in Leopard.

SOLVED!!!!! I spend about 5 hours one the phone with Cameron at AppleCare as well as some time on my own, and we FINALLY figured it out!
The important thing is that you can ONLY add aggregate devices from an admin account, but that may not be the only problem. It certainly wasn't in my case. So, here are the steps to follow:
1. Try adding/removing aggregate devices from an ADMIN account. If this works, you're good. If it doesn't, or if you're already on an admin account, try creating a new admin account.
2. If even a new admin account doesn't work, REINSTALL SNOW LEOPARD. If you just use the default install, it does an Archive and Install. It only takes about an hour, and you won't even notice OS X has been reinstalled except for the fact you'll have to reinstall the 10.6.1 update and any other misc. updates. Besides, it'll run a lot faster. It's so easy in fact that I'm going to start recommending you reinstall like this every couple months or so just to keep your Mac running in top condition.
3. NOW try creating aggregate devices from one or more admin account. It should work now. If it doesn't, then you have a different problem and I can't really help you much.
Hope this helps someone!

  • Can't create aggregate device?

Can anyone help me here, I know exactly how to create an aggregate device but when I go to hit the check boxes for various ins/outs it flashes like it worked for a second then appears back where it was on the list, unchecked. I have no idea what the problem is, but it won't let checks appear, it just appears checked and goes tot he top of the list for about a nanosecond and then appears again at the bottom unchecked, hence i cannot create aggregate audio devices.
EDIT: also, i've tried restarting, etc numerous times to no avail.

As a longtime user of Aggregate Devices, I can assure you that this issue is in fact real, and VERY new. What has happened since two weeks ago since I last used my setup?!?
Basically everything looks normal until you try to check the box to add the device to the list. You can click the plus sign, but when you try to check the boxes the check mark flashes in the box, and the "selected" item moves to the top for an instantbut then returns, unchecked to its original location in the list.
The forums and the genius bar have been no help (because I know more about this software than the staff) and I have tried varying the USB/firewire ports, only using certain devices, trying different devices... essentially everything I can think of save a system restore to earlier last month, which I do not have time to deal with right now.
This is a nightmare as I have a recording session tomorrow and have spent all day trying to figure out what is wrong... with no end in sight. Does anyone have a solution?
Apple, please address this issue ASAP!

  • Creating Aggregate device?

I'm having trouble with creating an Aggregate deivce on 10.6
Are there any tutorials for 10.6 (not leopard as it seems to have changed in 10.6?)
I basically want to record in Soundflower but output and monitor on my Edirol USB interface?
I have both of these selected in Audio MIDI setup and what i thought was "soundflower INPUT and Edirol OUTPUT but can't seem to get it to work
Any info or tutorials on creating Aggregate Devices in 10.6 or help would be great
    Thanks

Problem solved: Must be done from an admin account.

  • PLEASE HELP!!! Can't Use Aggregate Device in GarageBand

I have two iMics plugged directly into the two USB 2.0 ports on my iBook G4, and I used Audio MIDI Setup to create an aggregate device from the iMics. The aggregate device is recognized in GarageBand, but when I select it and say "OK" to the box asking me if I'm sure I want to switch drivers, it switches back to the input it was already set to.
I tried using the aggregate input in Sound Studio and monitoring it in the Sound System Preference pane, and it worked fine in both of those places, but I need to record multitrack audio for a recording session tonight, and I don't have any other programs besides GarageBand to do it!
Thanks in advance for any help. It seems that other people have had success doing this in 10.4 with GarageBand 2, but I don't have any luck yet.
[Edit: Also, I selected the first iMic as the 'Clock' source and I have both sample rates, and all other settings set exactly the same (16 bit, 2 ch, 44.100 KHz, etc.).]

Well, after a six hour recording session, I successfully used two iMics, and they did not drop out at all (or have any 'digital crud'). After I got them to work in GarageBand, I was unable to open GarageBand's preferences from within the application, so I had to use PrefSetter to change a couple things once I started recording.
Only after unplugging both iMics and opening a completely new session in GB was I able to change preferences from within the app.
Here's how I had the aggregate device set up:
    1. In Audio MIDI Setup, check the checkboxes ONLY for the iMics, and ONLY for the inputs (for some reason, if you check 'Use' for both inputs and outputs, GB can't handle it.
    2. Choose the iMic highest on the list as the 'Clock', and don't resample the other iMic(s) (no resample checkboxes should be checked).
    3. Click Done to get out of the Aggregate Device Editor, then, in the Audio MIDI Setup main window, choose the device you just created in the properties area, and make sure all the 'Streams' are set to 44.100 KHz and 16bit, 2ch.
    4. Quit Audio MIDI Setup, and open GarageBand.
    5. In GB, open the preferences, click on Audio/MIDI, then switch to the Aggregate Device you just created.
If GB won't switch to it, go back to Audio MIDI Setup and change the aggregate device to only include you internal audio, then switch to the new device in GB, save the file you have open, then quit GB, go to Audio MIDI Setup and add the iMics, removing the internal audio (set it up as I outlined above), then quit Audio MIDI Setup and open GarageBand with the file you just created, and the device should be selected (but you won't be able to change any Preferences now).
-Another note: The USB Hub I was trying to use (a high-speed USB 2.0 mini hub from Belkin) was not able to work very well - I don't think it quite had the capabilities of running either one or two iMics through it (the level was off, and the audio became out of sync quite quickly). I might be able to find a better hub (Griffen used to make an 'Audio USB Hub'), and I hope to try that out next recording session.
As a final note: The band I was recording decided to scrap all the work last night because they messed up on the first track we recorded, but didn't realize it until the end (all the other performers played off that track). Oh, well... Have a nice Saturday!

  • Create Aggregate Device for audio - Admin User Required

In reference to the thread, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1934270, I can confirm:
To create an aggregate audio device, you must be logged in as a user with admin rights. This was true on February 6, 2010 in Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.8.
Inconvenient, but understandable, because an aggregate device can re-route audio, possibly causing problems for other users who do not realize that's been done. Important for admin user to realize this.
Good to know that you need an admin userid.

  • Can't create loop device for dm-crypt

I'm trying to set up a disk image to use dm-crypt with, and after using dd from /dev/urandom to create an appropriately sized random file, I modprobed the loop module and ran:
    losetup /dev/loop0 /home/user/image
as specified on the Arch Linux wiki page for dm-crypt and got the error: "losetup: /dev/loop0: failed to set up loop device: No such file or directory".
I tried using the -f switch to create one, I got the error "losetup: cannot find an unused loop device: No such file or directory".
How do I get this to work? I also tried running these with sudo in case it was a permissions error, and that didn't help.

Yeah, it worked after a reboot. Thing was, modprobe loop had been done pre-kernel install, so I was a tad confused since the error didn't mention anything about a module needing loading or such. Either way, I ended up switching in the end to using veracrypt, it had better performance on my system and didn't take up an obscene amount of memory when mounting the image.

  • Audio MIDI setup not allowing aggregate device

I recently upgraded to a mac pro, and transferred everything from my old mac via firewire..
On my previous computer, using my aggregate device (Roland Fantom + Built-in output + built-in input) was no problem. I would simply choose in Logic my aggregate device under the core Audio preferences, and I could play logic software instruments with the roland keys, record audio through the roland, and play it back through the built-in line output no problem..
Now, on my mac pro, I can't do this because the aggregate device I created on my previous computer is not showing up under the devices pull-down menu in the core audio preferences in logic, and I cannot create a new aggregate device on this computer, as a matter of fact I cannot even seem to delete the old one... when i click the plus or minus (+/-), the blue shade highlighting the selected audio device just goes straight to the device at the top of the list (which happens to be built-in mic). it does not even allow me to deselect or select any checkboxes within the existing "9/25 aggregate".. when I try it just makes the devices listed in that window wiggle...
I have attached a screen shot of the Audio Midi setup screen (where one should be able to create aggregate devices)
Please let me know if you know what could be causing this..

    Ojan36 wrote:
Could uninstalling and reinstalling Logic completely possibly fix it? I guess that would be unlikely because the audio MIDI Setup window is OS X, unrelated to Logic..
    Correct.
when i click the plus or minus (+/-), the blue shade highlighting the selected audio device just goes straight to the device at the top of the list
This is one of the reasons why I am still suspecting some kind of permissions problem, even though you said this user has Admin privileges. I suspect a permissions problem because the symptom you described ("the blue shade highlighting the selected audio device just goes straight to the device at the top of the list") is exactly what happens if you do not have Admin privileges and you press the + button.
I think this issue has to do with the fact that there was not a clean install of snow leopard
I agree. My theory is that something about the way you moved items to this machine led to a permissions problem, and this permissions problem is causing AMS (Audi MIDI Setup) to behave the way you see.
I recently upgraded to a mac pro, and transferred everything from my old mac via firewire..
I know you connected via FireWire, but how did you control what was being transferred? Did you use Migration Assistant, or some other method?
In my comment here, I advised 55plus to check something. What happens when you check the thing I advised him to check?
You have not mentioned Disk Utility. I would use it to Repair Permissions. Then launch AMS. Does the + button work now?
Next I would try this: create a new OS X user account, with administrator privileges, and log in as that user. Then launch AMS. Does the + button work now?
55plus, I intend to respond to you too, but this is all I have time for right now.

  • HT3956 Aggregate Device Flashes then DISAPPEARS

I don’t have the option to add more devices. When I select the plus sign at the bottom right, the aggregator flashes then disappears.
I am running osx 10.6 and I do not see a menu item Audio > Open Aggregate Device Editor.
How do I find the Aggregate Device Editor?
I’m running Studio One free and attempting to use my Blue Mic via Blue Icicle. It registers in my Preferences > Sounds > Input but will not appear anyplace else.

Hey guys - I run into this issue some time ago, and now once again after upgrading to SnowL. I managed to fix it by changing the permissions on the Library/Preferences folder... then I was able to create aggregate devices! You can find a lengthier explanation on this post:

  • Aggregate Device doesn't recognize my Tascam US144 USB-interface

Hi! I hope this is the right category to post in...
Well, I would like to create an aggregate device with my Tascam US144 USB-interface as input and the built-in MacbookPro-speakers.
    The problem:
When I open the "Create Aggregate Device"-dialog and create a new device it doesn't list my US144, so I can't include it into my aggregate device.
It would be really awesome if you could help out.

I am having the same issue.
Ive called Tascam, the phone tech claimed they are unaware of this issue and told me to talk to Apple.
Ive called Apple and they believe it is in the driver support of Tascam - which I particularly believe more.
Has anyone found the answer to this?
I was trying out a M-Audio interface hardware yesterday that was showing up in the aggregate device list with the USB icon (US144 does not).
Was anybody able to use the Soundflower option to map the inputs from US144 to the Apple Default In?
I advocate a call campaign to TASCAM to get their software engineers working on a support for this!!

  • Aggregate Device Editor

I'm having trouble with my aggregate device editor: I can't save any changes or new devices. I've trashed:
    com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist
    com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
from both the user library and system library, but it makes no difference. It always reverts to the old aggregate device.
    What else can I try?

I stumbled upon this discussion trying to figure out the same problem I'm having with my M-Audio Fast Track Pro. It turns out you guys are on the right track. But the preference file who is the culprit is located in
    /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
The period "." at the beginning makes this a hidden file normally. It turns out my main account has read-write access to this, but the admin group and others only have read access to this. It's a binary plist file, but you can copy it somewhere and convert it with plutil. At any rate, it contains the definitions for the Aggregate devices that I created, and the lack of write permissions for everyone else explains why other users can't modify aggregate devices.
Hope this helps. Seems to me Aggregate devices should be a per-user preference. But at least other users can see the ones I create, so they aren't completely left out of the capability.

  • Help me in creating a Device Collection - i have a list of machine name (in a excel or CSV file)

    Hello Guys,
I have created a Device collection for UK region (2000+ machines)
Now i have been given a list of 1000 machines to which i need to deploy an application.
I have to create a device collection for this 1000+ machines. as an input i have a excel or CSV file with a list of machine names.
Please suggest me how can i create a device collection with CSV file as input. Is my CSV file should be in particular format.
Or is there any other way i can create a collection for this 1000 specific machines.
    Please suggest.

My previous post was for sccm 2012.
    here its for 2007
In the Operating System Deployment section of SCCM right click on Computer Association and choose
    Import Computer Information
when the wizard appears select Import Computers using a file
The file itself must contain the information we need in this (CSV) format
    COMPUTERNAME,GUID,MACADDRESS
    (sample below)
    Quote
    deployvista,3ED92460-0448-6C45-8FB8-A60002A5B52F,00:03:FF:71:7D:76
    NEWCOMP1,55555555-5555-5555-5555-555555555555,05:06:07:08:09:0A
    NEWPXE,23CA788C-AF62-6246-9923-816CFB6DD39F,00:03:FF:72:7D:76
    w2k8deploy,BFAD6FF2-A04E-6E41-9060-C6FB9EDD4C54,00:03:FF:77:7D:76
if we look at the last line, I've marked the computer name in Red, the GUID in BLUE and the MAC address in GREEN, separate these values with commas as above.
    w2k8deploy,BFAD6FF2-A04E-6E41-9060-C6FB9EDD4C54,00:03:FF:77:7D:76
the file can be a standard TEXT file that you create in notepad, and you can rename it to CSV for easier importing into our wizard...
so, click on Browse and browse to where you've got your CSV file
on the Choose Mapping screen, you can select columns and define what to do with that mapping, eg: you could tell it to ignore the GUID value (we won't however)
on the next screen you'll see a Data Preview, and this is useful as it will highlight any errors it finds with a red exclamation mark, in the example below a typo meant that it correctly flagged the MAC address as invalid
so edit your CSV file again and fix the error, click previous (back) and try again
Next choose the target collection where you want these computers to end up in
    review the summary
in SCCM collections, we can now see the computers we've just imported from File,
    Enjoy
