Can't create Gmail acct on my iPhone

Hi... I am trying to set up my Gmail account on my iPhone and having a bit of trouble. I have gone through all of the tutorials and entered the correct information into the phone:
- When I press 'save' it takes a while and then gives me an error message that it is unable to connect using SSL and then asks if I want to try without using SSL.
- I select yes and then I wait another long while.
- Gmail account verification failed: The IMAP server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding.
Anyhow, I have tried doing this through a wireless connection and through the edge network and am confident that I am connected. I have tried using the new 'Gmail' button for setting up mail as well as manually entering all of the information through the 'Other' button (per Gmail's instructions on how to set it up on an iPhone) but neither works. And yes, IMAP is enabled on my Gmail account.
Any help appreciated.

Umm... I must be a totally challenged individual. I put the wrong password in the iPhone, but the error messages I posted above are what I got for entering the wrong password. Which might be useful to other iPhone/Gmail users...
My home and work machines have the pwords automatically saved so I don't enter them very often... I guess I can be forgiven! =)

I'm considering signing up for the tethering plan with AT&T.
My main purpose would be to create a hotspot for my iPod Touch.
I use my iPod Touch at work using Keynote.  I would like the ability to download my Keynotes via Dropbox on my iPod Touch.
Can I create a hotspot with my iPhone 4 so my iPod touch would have access to the internet?

    Yes.

  • Can I create an album on my iphone and have it stores all the photos I take from then on to that folder/album?

can I create an album on my iphone and have it stores all the photos I take from then on to that folder/album?
I think that would be super useful before you go to an event, create a folder on the phone for that event and just use it to take pictures.  All the pictures for the event will be in that album and no need to move pics around at a later time!

That would be great, but unfortunately, all new pictures automatically go into the Camera Roll.
I wish that once you created an album and selected it to import from the Camera Roll, it would delete from the Camera Roll.

  • What??? You Can't Create New  Mailboxes on an iPhone???

    How incredibly stupid is that???
So I finally decide to buy one of these things (two, actually, since I can't get one unless my wife gets one too...) and one of the first things I tried to do is... move a message from the inbox to.... ANY other folder. There, at the bottom of the message, is the icon... a folder with an arrow. Tap that... and... what's this?? You can't create a new mailbox?
Oh wait, maybe you have to create the mailboxes in Mail on your MacBook, an then sync them to the iPhone. Nope, that doesn't work either.
So maybe you wind up on the phone with some charmin lass in Bangalore and you listen incredulously as she tells you that this INCREDIBLY SIMPLE AND S.O.P. CAN'T BE DONE with an iPhone!!!
And then you tell her... but... there it is, right in the user manual I downloaded. Three mailboxes in addition to "inbox" "sent" and "trash." Where did they come from???
Then you spend 10 minutes on dead silence, on hold, and she comes back and says, oh, you can only do that with an iMap account! Like, hotmail or gmail or something.
Well, I don't have hotmail or gmail (I do have Yahoo Mail but don't actually use it for anything) I have Apple Mail on my MacBook. Are they telling me that the mail program on this most-expensive-smartphone in the world is really so stupid that it can't create a mailbox?? That every message I want to keep on the thing has to be kept in the inbox? How stupid IS THAT???
So, please, somebody.... tell me I'm wrong about this -- that lovely Ms. Bangalore is wrong about this... and tell me how I can create an additional mail box on my iPhone so that I don't wind up with 1,000 messages in my inbox.
Really, how hard, how fundamental, is a task like that?
    Thanks,
    --PS

With .Mac you get 10GB of storage, you can divide that between email, and web/iDisk space by logging in and going to your account settings on www.mac.com.
EDIT: When my mailbox on an IMAP server that limits to 200MB starts to get full, I move old messages to a "local" or "On My Mac" folder on my computer.
Thanks again for all the patient counsel around this issue. Here's the latest, in case anybody's still paying attention.
I've been able to convert my primary e-mail account from POP to IMAP, so that it is now fully syncable with my iPhone. However, I'm still a long way from migrating my entire e-mail operation to Mac Mail.
That is actually something that I would like to do. But I'm having a hard time now figuring out what exactly will be my "e-mail strategy" going forward.
Presently, I am still doing most of my e-mail (which is a large part of my work) using Eudora in Windows on the Mac (via Parallels). I have had to do that mostly because I have thousands of messages in folders in Eudora, and I have been relying heavily on Eudora's robust search functions to find material that has formed the basis of a book I've been writing. For that and other reasons I have had to continue running Windows even as I've been migrating to the Mac platform.
Now that a first draft of the book is done, I would love to abandon Windows altogether. I'm much happier in a pure Mac environment.
But switching to IMAP for MacMail has actually made the prospect more difficult, because the service that hosts my primary e-mail account only allows 100MB of storage on their IMAP servers. I have hundreds of folders and several GB of files and folders in Eudora; with that kind of limit, I really can't see moving all those files and folders into MacMail, and having them sync'd to the server. It's impossible, actually.
I do not need access to 98% of what I have stored in Eudora from more than one client. So it really doesn't need to be part of my IMAP scenario.
What I do need is a way to clear from the server e-mail that I want to keep locally. How do I do that if everything in an IMAP client is duplicated on the server?
As it is, the next time I start Eudora in Windows, it is going to download all the e-mail and delete it from the servers. Then the next time I start MacMail, it will all disappear from MacMail because it's been deleted from the server, right? That's not such a bad thing, because it clears the servers and because MacMail is not (yet) the permanent repository of my vast e-mail archives.
This gets confusing to even contemplate, let alone write about. Bottom line is a) how do I make MacMail my main e-mail program when there is surely going to be more than 100MB of data I want to maintain, and/or b) how do I preserve the e-mail that I do want to save locally if my primary account is IMAP and I don't want to keep everything on the server.
Remember, this whole issue arises because 98% of what arrives on my handheld (previously a Treo 650) I could just delete, and the other 2% I could save to a separate folder. But that was a POP account. Now I've had to alter my entire e-mail regimen JUST so I can have a folder for "keepers" on my handheld. And I SURE don't need those those thousands of e-mails in my permanent archives on the hand held (even if there is room for them).
Sorry, I keep trying to boil it down to a simple question, and it keeps getting complicated. Is there a primer on IMAP management that somebody can refer me to?
    Thanks,

How about creating the ringtone on your iPhone? You may want to check this out:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2010514/how-to-create-a-ringtone-on-your-iphone- with-garageband.html
You need GarageBand 1.3 for iOS - is your iPhone compatible with that?

  • Can i create Excel SpreadSheet in my iPhone App ?

    Hello experts,
I need to create and apply calculations in the excel spreadsheet in my iPhone app and then email that file. Now email thing is simple. But can i create the Excel file in my apps Documents Directory and then apply calculations/formulas on the cells ?
If not, then i can go for server support but i really want to make it a independent application without any server side support.
Provide me some guidance regarding this.
    Thanks in advance.

Creating an Excel compatible spreadsheet App is non-trivial.
If you are looking for a working solution to your problem rather than how to write a spreadsheet program, look at Documents to Go, Mariner Calc or QuickOffice Mobile.

  • Can I create a firewall application for iPhone 4.0?

I am looking for intercepting all TCP traffic on iPhone. I have searched on iOS Developer Library but could not find anything.
I want to create a standalone application that would run in background (as Firewall). This application should intercept all TCP traffic, no matter which application has initiated it (Safari, Mail etc.). Is it possible on iPhone?
Can I somehow redirect all network traffic to Loopback-URL (localhost)?
    Thanks!

You won't find control to snoop on the device in that manner legally.

  • How Can I create a new event in Iphone and add invitees

I have created events in iCal and add invitees, I could not found the way to do the same in Mobileme nor my Iphone,Is there a way to invite someone to a meeting in the Iphone?

I was really frustrated by this change in Lion as I prefer to use the month view and I hate the way it defaults to an all day event.  So I was very pleased to find this solution in the Mac OS X Hints.  Simply type "Dinner at 6 pm" and it enters "Dinner" at 6 pm for one hour.  If you want anything other than an hour, put "6 - 8 pm" (or whatever period you want.  Brilliant.  Just wish Apple figured out a way to tell me that without having to search the communities here for an answer.
    Thanks Ferd II.

  • Error9808-can't create an acct to begin to purchase music

help! every time I go to create an account in itunes an error message comes up with this ---
"itunes could not connect to the itunes store. an unknown error has occured.
make sure you network is active and try again."
This isn't reffering to the internet connection is it? Because I'm connected already. I can search music and all that, but when I go to purchase or set up an account it brings up that error message.

  • HT3748 Can't access gmail exchange account with iPhone 5s

Cannot get messages on gmail exchange account.  Error message:  cannot connect with server.

Thank for comments.  I have fiddled around with oarental control and if I remove the web restriction its fine; when I put it back on its a problem.  I tried adding the addresses to the acceptable list, but it must be the https that is the problem.
Instead of WebMail, setup the Account in Mail App, either POP or IMAP, then you'll have control of who they can eMail, & once you OK ot they can get/send eMails.
I have set up in Mail, but not sure how that gives me control of who they can eMail.  Can you say a bit more on that?
    Thanks

  • Can't create iTunes ringtones for my iPhone

I'm trying to create ringtones from my purchased iTunes music for my new iPhone, but when I try to create the ringtone, I get a dialog that states:
*"In order to purchase ringtones, you must review and accept the iTunes Store Terms of Service. Click OK to go to the iTunes Store Terms of Service."*
I click OK, the dialog disappears, and then nothing happens. I've tried this repeatedly. I'm confused. Any ideas?

Okay, I tracked down a solution. It's not in any of Apple's related FAQs (it should).
"I was having the same trouble as those posted here, and finally called iTunes Support. They told me that there is a "TOS loop" that happens on the first purchase of a ringtone from a song that is already in your library (in other words, you are repurchasing the tune to make a ringtone). Here is their work-around:
"Go to the iTunes home page, sign in, and download the FREE Single of the Week. There will be no charge. That will give you the prompt to "Accept the Terms of Service" window, which you should accept and click okay. Now go back to the music library window on your desktop, and select the song you want, and choose Create Ringtone. This time, because you've already purchased a new song for a ringtone, you won't get into the TOS loop, and you should see the WAV box at the bottom, which allows you to select and preview your ringtone, then click buy when you're ready."
