Can't create recovery media -- R&R doesn't see USB dvd-r drive

I have a cheap asus usb dvd-r drive.  When I plug it in, everything's recognized by windows 7, however, when I get to the screen in create recovery media where I have to selected my device to record on, the drop down menu is blank and I can't select my USB dvd-r drive.  I have seen some other threads telling me to uninstall the driver and restart, but that hasn't worked.  Any ideas?
x201 tablet, windows 7 32-bit

plsfoldthx, welcome to the forum,
please do and check the following; attach the drive when the system is turned off, start the system and then enter bios (F1). Navigate to and open the startup menu and check that the drive is recognised by bios, hit F10 and then enter to save and exit. The system will restart.
Once windows has booted have another look in R&R to see if the drive is recognised.
I've always suspected that R&R calls up it's drive information from bios because hot plugging a drive has never worked for me with R&R.

  • X220i Can't create recovery media

I have a new X220i with a 128k SSD hard drive. I'm trying to create recovery files on an external hard drive. After clicking "ok" in all the dialog boxes, I get the message "No [sic] enough temporary disk space in the C drive, Create Recovery Media will exit now."
The C drive is 28.4 GB, but only 1.87 GB is free. Windows is taking up most of it. The "Lenovo Recovery" Q drive has 89.5 GB, with 75.8 GB free. MS Office was installed at the factory. I have not installed any other software yet. I can resize the partitions, but I think I need to create the recovery media first?

I'm sorry, carrme, as I haven't explained you clearly. I'm sure the partition sizes of your disk are not from factory. Let's compare with my 320Gb hdd - the partitions were about 1,1 (system_drv) / 310 (c) / 9 Gb (lenovo_recovery).
I think that was not your problem or mistake when you've installed ms and Lenovo updates prior of creating recovery disks.
In your case you can do the folowing:
    1. remove (temporarily) some files from drive C:. For example, the folder SWTOOLS. Lenovo sw and drivers for installation are stored here. Also, all installed Lenovo updates are stored in the folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\System Update\session. Then create Factory Recovery disks.
    or
    2. Resize partitions as you want. Then create factory recovery disks.
In order to save the OTR functionality after partitions resizing just reinstall Lenovo R&R. It'll rebuild MBR.
I think the factory image of your system (I mean the partition sizes) wasn't the same as you have now. But you don't have to worry about this.

  • Migration Assistant doesn't see USB Time Machine drive

My dad recently got a new MacBook Pro and wants to restore from his Time Machine backup, stored on a USB drive. He didn't use the Setup Assistant at the start - I'm really not sure why, but anyway...
Now we're looking at Migration Assistant, and it can't find the Time Machine drive. On the 'Select your disk' screen, the wheel just spins and spins. The backup drive is plugged in and mounted. We've checked the drive for errors using Disk Util, and it's fine. Moreover, I tested this with my own MBP and it's backup drive and the same problem occurs.
He also tried booting from the install DVD and using the 'restore' option from the Utilities menu, without success.
Is this because he has started to set up the machine using a user (as admin) with the same account name as the Time Machine backups? This website suggested that maybe that's what happening: http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html. Before I take him through a reinstall, etc, I'm hoping to confirm that this is really the problem!

Just create a new user account with a different name. Logout of the current account and log into the new one. Be sure the new account has admin status. You can then try migrating and see if it now works. Also see OS X 10.5- Migration Assistant keeps "looking for other computers".
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • Why only once for create recovery media???

When I created recovery discs for my laptop using HP Recovery Manager, I got the message:
You can only create recovery media once for your system. So ensure that you keep it in a safe place
why only once?? what is the problem with creating the same discs again?
what is the difference when creating the recovery discs with the Backup and Restore utils in Windows 7? is it also once only? what is the difference between discs created with Windows 7 versus HP Recovery Manager?

I believe it is due to MS license agreement that only 1 set is allowed. You can of course use a CD/DVD burning program to copy the set you made.
The Recovery set you burn restores the laptop back to factory shipped state. Recovery made with Win 7 utility is an image of the hdd that includes added programs, data ,photos, etc. You also need to burn the System repair disc to use with the backup. You can use it as often as you like.

  • Yoga 13 doesn't have an option to create recovery media in onekey recovery

    Hi All,
I am prepping a new Lenovo Yoga 13 for a user.  I want to create recovery DVD(s) for the new system with the OneKey Recovery software.  When I open the application there is no option to create media.  There are only a backup option and a restore option.  I called tech support and they advised if I attach a DVD drive the option to create media will appear.  I did this but no luck.....  I am attaching first a picture of what I see when I open One Key Recovery
And secondly to show that I do have a usb DVD connected here is a picture of the DVD attached with a blank DVD inside it.
I have downloaded the lastest update to the One Key Utility and am running version:  8.0.0.1519.  Can anyone give any insight as to why the create recovery media isn't there for me?.....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I found the answer to my own question.  Essentially in version 8 there is no way to create recovery media with this utility.  I came across the following link which I am going to try:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024

  • Can't Find Create Recovery Media Feature on T500 (XP downgrade from Vista)

Laptop is a T500 (2082-RF1), with XP Pro (sticker on bottom says Vista).
I cannot find any option to create recovery discs.
There is no Recovery option in ThinkVantage.
Doing a search for "recovery" finds only 3 files in PC Doctor folder.  None of them are launch files that I can recognize so I dare not attempt them.
How do I access (or install) the Create Recovery Media function?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Okay, for anybody else this could help...
    Go to Control Panel...
Click the Levono's System health and Diagnostics icon
and follow the flow of instructions...  you'll be led to download the Rescue and Recovery.
Now, why lenovo didn't include this with all new laptops, or make it easier to find (on the start-up screen, through ThinkVantage, etc) makes you wonder.

  • Cannot Create Recovery Media in Windows 7 Pro for x120e

You can have only one copy of the Microsoft Windows operation system. The Product Recovery Media Creator will exit now.
HI all. First, I have read "Creating Recovery Media in Windows 7" at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74040.
I get this message when attempting:
You can have only one copy of the Microsoft Windows operation system. The Product Recovery Media Creator will exit now.
What happened is that I blindly copied the recovery files to a USB and just copied to a folder on my desktop XP machine. So now my X120e is saying, sorry, you can't do that again. You already did it blockhead!
So how the heck do I undo this so I can create appropriate recovery media? System restore rollback? Registry key editing? Here are the files on my XP, I have no idea if I create Windows 7 pro recovery files from these.
Thanks all for any suggestions or known fixes,

    Hi chadnc
Have a look at the first bit of the post by The_Solutor  in this thread :Making a usb stick with the Lenovo recovery partition bootable maybe that will help.
Like many things Microsoft, the "you can only burn recovery media once" limitation just inconveniences the honest users, but doesn't slow down the bad guys. Oh well....

  • Having trouble creating Recovery Media

    Hello everyone
I bought a new Lenovo disk and tried to install XP with some previous recovery Media but it doesn't seem to detect the second DVD disk during the recovery so I am forced to create a new set of recovery media.
The only issue is that the application crashes at startup with an issue for RRMedia.exe.
I said no problem; I’ll just update the RR software. I’m currently on Rescue and Recovery version 3.01.0037.00.
Unfortunately when trying to update I get errors:
    - for RR3x versions I get a message that sais a newer version is already installed
    - for RR4x versions it forces me to uninstall the 3.01.0037 version
The only problem is that I cannot uninstall the current version. When I try to uninstall it halts and asks me for a msi file that should be in the “C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\” directory.
The said directory has the following subdirectories that are related to Lenovo:
    {0BF4011E-9066-4AA1-ABE5-0C21C7F86E6F}
    {462CED12-459C-4FC5-8BF0-AB6D4B18F9E5}
    {93D1D522-D1EA-4DBF-99B0-E68949FB99A4}
    {AE124339-6CC7-472C-8F3A-633EC608CDAE}
The uninstall registry key has the InstallSource key value at {93D1D522-D1EA-4DBF-99B0-E68949FB99A4}  but is does not seem to accept the msi file in that directory.
Also found another registry key that points to an upgrade :
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\F51209FBB7D248C4A8420AB34CB159DD\InstallProperties]
    Modify Path = MsiExec.exe /I{BF90215F-2D7B-4C84-8A24-A03BC41B95DD}
    "DisplayVersion"="3.99.9999.00"
    "DisplayVersion"="3.99.9999.00"
The problem that the update directory is not there and the version is not what I see in the RR application.
I’m wondering if anyone else had the same problem and found a solution… Or, perhaps someone can understand the intricate interactions between the components and can help me find a solution.
    Any input is welcomed.
    Thanks
    Ovidiu

    Hi Herik
Thank you for your reply and sorry for the slow response time...
Here's my update for this situation:
R&R - no solution as it simply will not upgrade or uninstall. Tried multiple installation packages but no success.
The original recovery partition is not there as this is a new drive that I wanted to install on my system (2623DDU).
Instead I focused on the recovery media and I think i found a solution... BTW the media was created on my system in 2008, the last time I reinstalled my system and the version on the disk is RR 4.20.0511.00.
Here's what I did the first time
    - Booted the machine with Rescue And Recovery Startup Disk (1 x DVD)
    - Application installed correcty without errors the prompted me to eject the disk and reboot
    - Ejected and rebooted and after a while I had access to the recovery console (don't know the exact name of the application).
    - Select factory install/reset and followed the prompts
    - Asked for an expansion recovery DVD or something like that - I chose NO
    - Asked for the Product Recovery Disk (1 x DVD) but when I inserted it would not read it. It only said this is not a correct Recovery media, please insert the correct media and retry.
The solution was to plug the second disk in the machine WHILE it was booting, before the recovery application took control of the hardware. This way and only this way it worked, the recovery process sucessfully created and installed the recovery partition with all its content.
After that I had a few issues relating to the XP installation not having the ACHI drivers for my new disk but in the end I forced it to install.
The fact remains that on my current drive (the old one) I am not able to upgrade or uninstall the RR application and luckily I have my Product Recovery Disk otherwise it would have been a headache to recover....
    Sorry for the long post...
If you have any suggestions, advice or experience to share please share it ...

  • Create Recovery Media from Recovery Partition

I'm trying to help my sister fix her laptop, it's a HP Pavillion DM3. The hard drive has developed a physical fault which is preventing it from booting into Windows, however the Recovery partition appears to be undamaged.
What I would like to do is replace the hard drive with a new one, and restore it using the recovery partition from the old hard drive. Is there any way I can do one of the following:
    1. Create recovery media when booting into recovery manager/the recovery partition?
    2. Copy the hidden contents of the Recovery folder on this partition (when connecting the drive to another computer), so I can copy the recovery partition to a new physical disk?
    Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

    MattGoldman,
When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your computer, inside the battery compartment or on the startup BIOS screen. Please DO NOT include your serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
Neither the methods you have described nor the procedures that have been provided will work. While, it possible that "D:\" HP Recovery partition is fully intact it is more likely that it isn't. The only way I think you may be able to recover the system at this moment is to purchase a new hard drive of like size and capacity as the failing drive, and "clone" the entire old drive to the new drive. This will / may require two USB 2.5" external drive enclosures and a working computer to accomplish.
After the drive is "cloned", place the new drive in the HP laptop computer and see if it boots. If it boots, immediately create the HP Recovery Media. If it doesn't boot, try setting the "D:\" HP Recovery partition as active using a drive partitioning utility. If this boots, it should start the HP Recovery process and return the computer to a factory like state.
If none of the above works, please contact official HP Customer Support in your region / country, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP Recovery Discs are available.

  • Can not create recovery discs on satellite C875D-S7330

Can not create recovery discs on satellite C875D-S7330. Drive runs and appears to be doing it thing, then aborts saying it has error to check disc for scratch or dust on media. Error code: OEO1B5-26-2AO3OC 00 . Tried 3 new discs all same results. Tried a 4th disc trying to continue on with disc 2 of recovery discs, got another error on this one. Error code: 020150-20-00000000.
Anyone have a fix for this? Had this machine less than 24hrs.
    Thanks
    Don B.

Personally, I would get a 16gig USB thumb drive and put your recovery on it.  It eliminates having to swap disks during recovery and it's easy to store.  I've used mine several times and it's worked perfectly every time.

  • Create Recovery Media low disk space on C error

    Hey everyone,
When I tried to create a recovery disc on my X301 Windows 7 to free up the partition, I got an error saying "No enough temporary disk space in C drive, Create Recovery Media will exit now." How much space do I need to free up on my C drive? I only have about 7.5 gb free on my 64gb SSD.
    Thanks for your help!

You'll want at least 10 GB free before doing anything.  As is, you can look at your recovery partition to see exactly how much you'll need, but Windows will always block off extra for some reason.

    Thanks.

    Reasons am asking this questions:
Sometime you test your computer doing a lot of things learning new technologies etc and suddenly you decide ok I want to take it back to factory state. Until now, most Thinkpad laptop does not come with recovery media. So how can I assure that my Recovery Media includes everything I used to have when I first receive unit.
I want to learn how to do that by myself by learning from the experts.
Until now what I know as follow:
    ThinkPad x201:
I tried recovery media  3 DVD only with original hard drive works. I did not try Flash and not sure there is option yet.
If I upgrade unit with 1T hard drive and 16G Ram, How can I do Recovery Media?
    ThinkPad Twist s230u:
I tried Flash and followed procedure on link in previous post. I took me less than 15 min to recovery whole. The question is does this process recover all the parts that is included when I receive unit.
I was unable to do recovery since I am not sure when in the Flash and during process showed to choose operating system was only Window 8 option not Window 8 Pro which came with unit.
I was able to do reset within system took longer and worked.
Is the recovery part build-in in the hardware or software partition? Is it included in the recovery Flash with all partitions?
Thank You. Awaiting for anyone to reply.

  • Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

    Hi,
I recently bought a T530 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I want to create recovery disc(s). However, in the "Create a recovery media" wizard, I don't have the option of selecting DVDs if tick the option "Copy the recovery partition to the media". I have a bunch of DVDs lying around and I would like to use them. Not to mention that I don't intend to buy USB drive just for this purpose.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Hi egrivel,
As stated above, there is no option to create optical recovery media.  You can use a flash drive.  8G 16G I believe, but verify that when running the utility.  Make sure "copy the recovery partition" is checked.

  • Folio 13-2000 unable to create recovery media due to known SSD corruption bug

My folio has been freezing and periodically showing the 'no boot drive' message. I tracked it down to the critical Softpaq sp60976. I tried to create recovery media (USB flash drive), but it fails at about 19% completion and says it cannot continue. The SSD firmware update requires a secure wipe of the drive, but I won't have anything to put back on it.
My computer is out of warranty by a year. Is there really no recovery media, even for purchase, from HP? I'll take DVD, as I can attach an external DVD drive.
