Can't decide between a 12 inch and 15 inch Powerbook, comments welcome.

I have a new PowerMac G5, and am looking to add a laptop. I love the size of the 12 inch Powerbook, but see enough differences between it and the 15 inch that I am looking at both. I will only be using my laptop when I travel, on airplanes, in airport, and hotel rooms. I see myself mostly reading email, surfing the web, and possibly working on individual scenes in Final Cut Express, and Soundtrack. I would appreciate any comments, complaints, or suggestions from anyone who has experience with either laptop.
Bill

I owned a 12" PB G4 and recently switched over to the new hi-res 15" Powerbook. I was really torn about it, I love my 12" PB, it is great to carry around, surf the web, etc. I did not want to give up the small size, but finally switched. Here is my opinion:
The 15" Powerbook is the clear winner. In terms of performance the 15" Powerbook with a 7200 RPM drive and the 128 MB video RAM is clearly faster in perceived day to day use. The significant extra real estate (specially in current generation of 15") is just stunning. I have not yet sold my old 12" and when I occasionally pick up the 12" the screen looks cramped and small. And as far as size differential the only real issue is that I could easily and safely pick up the 12" with one hand and I really don't want to do that with the 15". And place the 15" on one leg I have to carefully balance it (where the 12" would just stay).
I believe the 15" when open requires just under one extra inch in space for traveling no the airlines. My experience is that I have been on flights where even the 12" would get crushed by the person in front, so I am not sure how significant this part is to you.
Finally and before you commit you should go look at the display of the 15". There are some issues with alternate lines being a little dimmer, which bothers some people and not others (mine has it, but it does not effect what I do). Make sure it works for you in case Apple does not have a fix for this.
Good luck.

  • Can't decide between the 1st gen and 2nd gen 32GB iPod Touch, please help.

I would like to buy a 32GB iPod Touch, the problem is that i can't decide whether i should buy a 1st gen or 2nd gen.
Obviously 2nd gen is "better" but is it worth the extra $$$?
Best Buy has the 1st gen for $310 and the 2nd gen is $400, that's $90 difference.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    that's $90 difference.
Actually, it's only $80 because the 1G touch will come with the old 1.x software and it cost $10 to upgrade to 2.x software.

Can't decide between the iphone or ipad as my first apple product. Is there a difference other than phone and size?

    A couple of differences:
    iPad native apps
Interactive e-books with multi-touch and 3D support (in iBooks 2)
Layouts (kind of merges with iPad apps, Music/Settings, etc. all look different)
    Wi-Fi only models, no contracts
iPads are unlocked by default (3G models)
As paul said, I would really wait for the next iteration of iPad. That's what I'm doing

  • I Can't Decide between a iPod Touch (5th Generation) or a iPad Mini 2

I'm looking for an apple product from Christmas. Originally the iPad Mini came to mind then I saw the Mini 2 and I also a iPod Touch. So I can't decide between a 32GB iPod Touch 5th Gen or a 32GB iPad Mini 2.
You see one of the reasons I liked the Mini was the size factor for games and music but them I said to myself that's too big for listening to music on my daily commute. So I really don't know. If it helps I already have an iPod Touch 4th Gen but it's 16GB and the charging socket only works sometimes.

I would get the Mini because the design of the 5G iPod is over two years old. It will max out iOS updates before the the Mini will.
But the desire for a smaller device may be more important.

  • Deciding between a Quad-Core and 8-Core

Hi, I am getting ready to purchase a new Mac Pro and trying to decide between a Quad-Core with 3.33 and 16 GB RAM or 8-Core with 2.26 and 32 MB RAM.
I use Adobe CS4 Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, Quark 8, Parallels, MS Office and occasionally Final Cut Pro 5.
My current machine is almost four years old. I keep my machines 3-4 years.
    Any advice or suggestions?

Partitioning a boot drive helps... if the 2nd partition is just junk, clutter, static files, archived, or maybe those "Download" or updates you want to keep around for later.
Another use, a small 30GB emergency-only boot volume to do repairs (but best to be on one of your other drives of course, using small portion.
A 640GB WD Caviar Black is cheap and fast and nothing to sneeze at (stock OEM boot drive, doesn't hurt). A pair of 10K 300GB is nice, or two in RAID0.
System - Data - Scratch - Backup is a good way to use the 4 drive bays.
BUT! and HOWEVER! having at most 20GB (and probably less) is not a good idea. 10GB free minimum is cutting it close. Programs and the system like free space - unfragmented too. I try to keep 50% free, or at least 60GB. And find a 150GB is fine - for just the OS and applications (though apps can vary, X-Plane can take 60GB itself).
    So I'd pick up a drive today, whether $70 640GB or 10K 300GB $189 (try Newegg too).
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136555&Tpk=VelociRaptor %20600GB
You can always add drives and use some for backups (2 for each volume you have at least). The main thing, to get the Mac you need or want.
The 3.33's do show up on SPECIALS, and go even quicker

  • Can I share between my Maverick Macbook and my iPhone 5 using AirDrop

Can I share between my Maverick Macbook Pro and my iPhone 5 using AirDrop

Come on Apple you are suppose to be ahead of the game. This seems kinda rediculous that you can not air drop between iOS7 devices and OS Mavericks if the both support Air Drop, I know they are different platforms but figure it out already.
Also you can not connect/communicate via Blutooth between iOS7 devices and mac.  This is been an missing in action for far too long  What's going on apple, Give us what we want.   such a simple request.  I have been asking for years to have some simple way to transfer between handset and comp.  Let our mobile divices interact with our computers.   HELLO!!!!

  • Can't decide between MBA, MBP, or MBPR

I'm in my last year of college and have decided I need (want) a new MacBook. I have an older 15" MBP that only works when plugged in, a Dell Mini 9, and a 2010 iMac.  Planning on selling the three and getting either a 13" MBA, 13" MBP or have considered splurging for the 15" MBPR.  I've looked and looked and really don't know what would be best and be the best bang for my buck.  This would be my only computer and I would want to keep it for several years at least.  If I got the 13" MBP I would remove the disc drive and install a SSD to increase the speed but keep the storage of the HDD.  I have a decent music collection (40+ GB), do some work with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop occasionally, but mostly do basic stuff like word, excel, web browsing etc, travel a decent amount, and would most likely get an extra display for more serious work while at home.  I know this question gets asked a lot so I appreciate any responses for help.

Ordered (7/16/2012) the 2012 15.4" Macbook Pro (NON retina)
    With:
    2.6GHz i7 CPU
    1GB GPU
    HR Antiglare Wide Screen
750GB 7200 RPM HDD  (installed Crucial M4 256GB SSD with a fresh install of Mountian Lion)
I really wanted the rMBP but just could not see the real value of the Retina display when the (HR) 1680 X1050 is really ideal for me.  I also have the late 2011 Macbook Air that has 1440 X 900 resolution, it's not antiglare and not glossy either.  I also have a 2006 Black Macbook with 1280 X 800 and it's not antiglare and not glossy.  If the rMBP offered a antiglare display I'd probably still be deciding (took 3 weeks already).
The thoughts that keep me on the fence between the 15" rMBP and 15" MBP was "I need to buy the future and not invest in the past".  For sure the rMBP is the future.
Since I made the decision Im glad I did (15" MBP Antiglare WS).
    my Pros/Cons list
                             rMBP          MBP
Speed                   X                X     (tie, adding SSD)  (Im getting 285 Write & 502 Read)
Expansion                              X     (increase RAM and HDD or SSD)
Weight                  X                      ( rMBP about a pound lighter, not impressed)
Generation                             X     (decided long ago to NOT buy 1st generation anything, if possible)
Repairability                           X     (replace battery on MBP and other parts, but not the rMBP, yet)
Resale                  X                       (not sure here but makes since, new beats old)
    Antiglare                                X     (no contest)
Cost                     X                       (my configuration was about $320 more than the retina)
Ports                                      X     (FW800, Gigabit Ethernet, DVD/CD drive, have HDMI adaper)
Value                                     X     ( rMBP display would be a waste of money for me)
BTW, my GeekBenck score is 12096

  • I can't decide between the 20" and 24" iMac C2D

    Hey all...
I am in the process of selling my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8GHz with 2GB of RAM as I want to move to an iMac C2D. I keep flip flopping between the 20" and 24". The only upgrade I would get for either would be bumping the memory to 2GB. The price delta between the two is $500. That additional $500 buys me a larger screen, better video and better speakers. I am also leveraging my daughter's educational discount.
I don't use my Mac for business. I use it for email, web browsing and research. In addition, I am a heavy iLife user, except for Garage Band. I use iTunes and iPhoto a lot. I also import movies into iMovie and iDVD. It will be used every day after work for about 3 hours and a lot on the weekends.
My Power Mac is running fine and has served me well for the last two years. I figured I'd sell it while I can still get some decent money for it (my eBay auction ends tonight!).
I just really want an iMac. There is something to be said for using a Mac with an Apple display. My G5 was connected to a Dell 2005FPW 20" widescreen. I also have two AMD based machines running Windows/Linx connected to my new Dell 2407WFP 24" widescreen and it is almost too big! Those are used for gaming, development, virtual machines, etc.
Is the 24" overkill? I don't know. It looked beautiful last night in the Apple Store.
    Thoughts. Comments? Suggestions?

Hi there. I recieved mu 24" imac on Thursday this week having sent back my 20" as soon as the 24" came out. It was the best decision i ever made. I do alot of photo retouching and editing as I am a photographer and have only just started playing with the computer. The screen makes a massive difference, not only for photo's but for all other things, it enables you to keep windows open at a good viewing size and see them all on screen at the same time.
I know its a difficult decision as had to convince my girlfriend that it was worth the extra cost, but i am so glad to have done it.
The 20" was lovely and a fantastic size, the extra 4" is a worthy investment.
I was worried it was overkill also, but after using it today fully for the first time i could not imagine having a smaller screen.
Hope this helps, using Photoshop and Aperture means i really appriciate the extra space, but when i browse the web the pages do tend to look a little lost!! ;o)

  • When I use firefox and have several tabs open, I can only navigate between them by minimazing and maximazing FF in the taskbar and then clicking on the other tab. When I want to click on content on the website (say a link) I need to mini/maximize again.

If I want to switch to the other tab again, it only works if I do that again. It seems that I can either use the content of a website or use the functions of firefox, (like navigating between tabs, using favorites, typing in the address bar) but not at the same time. I always need to minimize and maximize the program by clicking on the task bar. This goes back and forth forever.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Can't decide between Macbook Pro or Air, any adivce?

    Hey everyone!
Well tonight the "Service Battery" warning appeared on my mid 2009 Macbook Pro with 868 charge cycles. I am assuming I can continue using the computer, plugged in, for a few weeks without problems?
Anyway, I will be getting a new laptop soon, and am debating between:
    1. the 13" Pro with 256GB flash, 2.4 GHz processor and 8GB RAM
    2. the 13" Air with 256GB flash and 8GB RAM
With education pricing at my university, the two will essentially cost the same. I am attracted to the great screen on the Pro but also the great battery life and light-weight nature of the Air (Although now I hear its okay to leave the battery plugged in constantly... And since I am always near an outlet, I am not sure battery life really matters?). I will be using the computer for mostly internet browsing, word processing and FaceTime. I am also really interested in longevity of the device and am unsure which to go with. Anyone have any suggestions, opinions or recommendations?

I also forgot to include that I have heard the Pro is noticeably faster, so I guess if that is true, that is another plus!

  • Can't decide on how much RAM and flash drive..

Hi, I've just started my university course in Graphic Design, so I'll be needing to use programs such as photoshop.. indesgin.. illustrator. I want to buy a macbook pro 15, but I'm not sure if I should conisder upgrading to\or purchasing one with the highest amount RAM or Flash storage, or both! The 16gb Macbook is quite a bit more exspensive... so I was thinking to purchase the 8gb one for £1,563.60 and then upgrade it to 16gbRAM, do you think that's the best solution? or should I also be getting the higher amount of flash drive? (the 512GB instead of the 256GB)
    Thank you

The RAM is integral to the logic board.  There is no upgrading.  Hardrive is not user changable.
    A drawback of the rMBP.
    At time of purchase only.

  • My friend should be able to sync her iPad and iPod so that she can stream information between the two devices and her computer. Her brothers were right next to her and did the same thing with there devices and same settings and it worked for them.

What would have went wrong because she should have been able to sync all three together at the same time? Her I pad is new so  restoring may be an option to make sure her settings are correct for this process. She doesn't use iCloud so she backs her information up to her computer.

There are mobile device management solutions that can do this, including in Apple's OS X Server system, but most parents generally find that setting this up is more work than it's worth. If you're interested, though, there are a couple that at least purport to be free (I don't know if there are any hidden "gotchas"):
    http://www.unwireddevicelink.com/features/
    https://meraki.cisco.com/products/systems-manager
    and Apple's system:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/#profile-manager
I don't think any, however, allow you to see current activity or browser history. iOS doesn't expose those to access from MDM solutions, to the best of my knowledge.
    Regards.
