Can't decided on glossy or matte for new/refurb MBP

I'm going to be getting either a previous generation new or refurb MBP. I can't decide on the matte or glossy screen though. I've got a white iMac(matte screen) that I really like and a PB G4 15" with a matte screen also that is getting dim.
I will mainly use the MBP for stuff like web surfing, email, photo editing, ect. Nothing high end.
I've never seen a MBP matte that is LED backlite. How does that compare to the white iMac screen?
thx

Indoors or outdoors? Reflections can be tolerated indoors. Outdoors, they will overwhelm the screen and tire your eyes. The glossy screen has a lot brighter colors, which can throw off your color perception, so many people dislike the glossies. However, Steve Jobs seems to think they're the wave of the future; let's wait till he's older and with failing eyesight and ask him then...

Brighter + instant illumination, no warmup period.

My home page opens in the initial FireFox window, but new tabs open with a blank page. To get to my default page I have to click "home", but now it's way over on the other side of the page.
Can I set a default for new tabs?

right click on the control bar and choose "adapt" (or something like that). A window will pop up. Ignore that window and move the home button to the place you want it ''on the control bar''

  • Recommended ExpressCards for new 17" MBP for video editing

Ok, so after sitting on the fence for months I had to buy the new 17" MBP. I just couldn't wait any longer and my trusty PB G4 is getting slow.
After reading the enormous amounts of posts I can see why people are so upset about losing the ExpressCard slot in the 15" models.
But, for the 17" models does anyone have any good suggestions of Expresscards? And what is the optimum set-up I should go for?
I am an Avid and Final Cut editor using a 4-pin Firewire Sony DVCAM deck and two Western Digital External Drives daisy-chained together.
    Would love some advice.
    thanks!

The Sony DVCAM is FW400 (aka iLink, aka IEEE1394a), so a 4-pin-to-6-pin or -to-9-pin cable will do. I'd get the 4-pin-to-9-pin (FW800 is fully backward compatible with FW400) so you can connect directly to the MBP's FW800 port, if needed. You can just get a FW800 ExpressCard, since it's backward compatible.
    I'd recommend this one:

  • Can you choose unlimited messaging package anymore for new contracts?

hi, my verizon contract is up next month so i was planning which phone i want next... i was wondering if it's possible to do this though. right now i'm just on an unlimited text plan, no minutes. is there an option to do that still? i tried picking out a new phone to see but all they have is the regular minutes/text+minutes plans.
if they don't have it i might go with family members' plans on att or sprint since it's a waste for me, i never use minutes. thanks if you know the answer

    Hello mochaaa,
Thank you spottedcatfish for the link on the messaging only options. May I ask, mochaaa. Are you looking just for messaging or are you looking for a minute package as well? If you want minutes, I have attached a link to our minutes & text rates.
    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?sortOption=priceSort&item=planFirst&action=viewPlanList&catId=323&sel=ind&typeId=1
There is a drop down menu that you can use to change from individual plans to family share plans & more.
    Hope this helps...

  • Have OSX & OS 9. Can't change chooser in OS 9 for new printer.

Hi - Here I am hours later. Please help.
I have a new printer ip4200. I am running both OS X and OS 9. All is well with OS X and printer, but I can not get the ip4200 to show up on my OS 9 Chooser. It shows 4 items: AppleShare, FaxPrint, LaserWrier8 and SC777 (my last printer).
I am trying to print from Corel Print House which operates in OS 9 only and cannot.
    Thanks much.
    Desperate Diane
    G4   Mac OS 9.2.x   also running OS X 10.2

Hi, Diane. Ralph has the right idea. To print directly from a Classic application, you'd need to have installed an OS9-compatible driver for the ip4200, so you could select that driver in the Chooser. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be one.
    http://software.canon-europe.com/Printers/BubbleJet_Printers/PIXMAiP420010232.asp
Indeed, the System Requirements for the printer include the following: "Macintosh computer with Mac OS X v10.2.1 or later..."
It appears that the printer probably requires some feature(s) not present in earlier versions of OS X (let alone OS 9) to function. If that's the case, there would be no point in Canon's writing an OS 9 driver for it.
If Corel Print House has the ability to save its documents in a file format that you can open with an OS X-native application (PDF format, for example), you could save them in that format, open them in such an application, and print them in OS X, using the printer's OS X driver. If CPH can't do that, you may have to find an OS X-native application to use instead of CPH. Or you may want to buy an older printer that does have an OS9 driver.

  • I can't install software on my mac for new rebel t5

I am trying to install the software on my mac for my rebel t5. Computer is telling me it's not compatible with operating system.

You'd need to tell us specifically which OS version you are using.
In the upper-left corner of your screen, click the Apple icon  then click "About This Mac".  That will report the version.
You will likely need to download a verison compatible with your OS.  You can find them all here:

  • IPhone 16 GB white  - Issues - Can I pay to restock and exchange for new?

    Hi,
My wife and I bought new iPhones on monday to replace our originals.
I have had nothing but troubles.
The first unit, the hold button broke and retreated into the shell - the exchanged it.
The second unit, the screen is way too yellow, ever after the update. Also, I have not been receiving calls. I went to genius and talked to AT&T, they say everything is working fine. Let us know if I keep having issues, etc. I think the phone is a lemon, my wife's 3G phone is perfect.
If i go back to the Apple store, and pay the restocking fee, can I just exchange for a brand new phone?

Apple will not accept a return for an iPhone purchased at Consumer Cellular. You cannot
add additional memory to an iPhone. If you wish one with more memory, sell
the one you have and use the funds received towards the purchase of the model
    you desire.
You can return your current iPhone to your wireless provide, purchase one with
more memory at Apple and take that iPhone to Consumer Cellular to have them
activate it on their network. Before doing so, be use that Consumer Cellular will
accept iPhones not purchased directly from them and if they do, which models
    they support.

  • Can't decide: MBA refurbish 1.86GHz vs new 2.13GHz

I found a refurbished, rev B 1.8GHz with 128GB SSD. The price is $1449, compare to the new 2.13GHz that is $1699 (with student discount).
The only difference between the two are the CPU speed and that the rev B doesn't comes with the Ethernet adapter.
I am not a graphic designer, and the most CPU intensive things I do are probably watching .H264 HD MP4 videos, and maybe occasionally play games like Tiberium War.
Including tax and everything, the 2.13Ghz is $270 more expensive than the refurbished 1.86Ghz, my question is, does the extra 0.27GHz worth the extra money?
    Thanks a lot!

Yes absolutely. Every speed bump you can get out of the MBA is helpful, especially if you want to play any games on it.
You will be much happier with the increased speed bump. If you can wait, of course, the next revision on the Apple line will probably be the MBA since all they did this time around was a speed bump. That seems to be their course of updating the Macbook line -- speed increases here and there, and then all new revisions a few months down the road...The MBA is the only macbook that hasn't seen a revision in the last year, so it's a guestimate, but I would expect something new shortly down the road.

  • Can You Set Snooze Off (by Default) for New Alarms?

I'd like to be able to have the snooze function off by default when creating alarms using the Clock app (particularly for alarms created via Siri, but also for manually set alarms), but there seems to be no way to do this. Do you have to create the alarm first and then edit it to set the snooze facility off?

When you create an Alarm, the snooze option is on be default and there is no way to set this specifically to be off each time you make a new alarm.  If you use Siri, it will be with the snooze on.  If you set it up manually, you should see the snooze switch on the same screen you choose the time.  If you deice to edit an existing alarm, you will also see the snooze button.

    You are correct.

No, in iOS 7.1.1 the snooze option is viewable when creating an alarm or editing.

  • Software for recording video with built in i-sight for new macbooks mbp?

Does any software exist that will allow a macbook or a macbook pro user to record video with their built in isight camera at the top of the screen? If so, let me know. I need to document countless hours of reading the forums...

iMovie will allow you to record from your built in iSight as well.
Lastly, Conference Recorder will allow you to record iChat video conversations. It can be found here: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/conferencerecorder/
