Can't Decrypt External HD After Mavericks

This is driving me crazy.
I have an external WD MyPassport HD that works well. I encrypted it and used it as my Time Machine backup disk for the past year.
Enter Mavericks. After a system failure a few days after Mavericks installation, I found a large iNode file in my root lost+found folder. The iNode is nothing special, simply a .pkg of the Mavericks installer. However, ever since that file appeared, my system refuses to acknowledge my password for the external HD. I know the password, it hasn't changed. But the password entry window does that wiggle thing whenever I enter the password. No, caps lock is not on.
So. I restarted in Safe Mode, according to a suggestion in another post. Voila! Now, Mavericks recognizes the password for my external! Ain't that something? I would love to know why it doesn't recognize it in Normal boot mode.
But I still have a problem. Of course, it logically follows that I should decrypt my drive, erase Mavericks, and reinstall. Because, you know, I'm afraid of forever losing access to that drive if I reinstall OS 10.8 or even venture for 10.9 again, and the drive is still unreadable.
All of my backups are on that external disk, and while Safe Boot will READ the disk, IT WON'T DECRYPT IT!
Help. Any ideas? Does this have anything to do with indexing? Because another problem I'm having is Spotlight doesn't really work since I installed Mavericks either.

Maybe because you installed the unnecessary WD software. If you did, remove it and see whether there's an improvement.

Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion. I have a Laice 1 terabyte external drive that worked fine with Snow Leopard and now no show ... tried connecting it to front port and Mac Pro can't see it. Also lost Office,Quicken, and Final Cut Pro says: " You can't open application because Power PC apps are no longer supported" this is Not a good surprise!

Does the drive work when just directly connected? If so, have you prepped the drive?
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Can't access external library after iOS5 update

For years I've kept separate itunes libraries on an external drive without a problem (well, mostly without problems). After updating itunes to work with iOS5 I can no longer access my external library files. All of them are greyed out and I can't choose them. Each collection of library files are located within separate folders ( I have one for music, one for audio books, and one for tv/movies) on the external drive. The data (musice, movies, etc) seem fine. Has Apple changed where the library files need to be located? or is it another issue. The only thing I could think of was to run repair permissions but that didn't change a thing. I really don't want to lose the organization and playlists for over 100GB of files. Please help!

iPhoto 9.6 only runs on Yosemite.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Logic will not open with out external soundcard after Mavericks upgrade

Recently upgraded my Mac to Mavericks and my Logic 9.1.8 (32 Bit) worked fine. I have a Digidesign 002 rack which I was using as an external soundcard. These all worked fine until I updated my Digi drivers. Now Logic will not open unless the Digi is connected, Logic has also been updated but still no joy. Logic freezes when opening on 'checking midi drivers...'
Is there a preference I need to change or do I have to remain connected to my Digi forever?! lol

Remove the Digidesign Midi drivers.....

How do i back up what i can to a external hardrive after im in the disk utility?

my mac wont boot, its a 08 i believe, 2.88 ghz dual core, 500 gb hard drive, has always been fast and reliable. i have been running osx lion since it basically came out, with no troubles. now it wont boot, im getting the apple logo with the loading bar, not loading at all. fine. im in disk utilities and now i have a external hardrive. i have about 3000 songs, and microsoft office 11. just the programs. a few docs would be nice to keep, but the music and movie files are all i really want. music especially. how do i load them onto the hardrive?

Some Folders not appearing on external drive after mavericks update.

This is strange but some of the folders on my external wont appear... It has a fat32 partition.. only a few folders show up,
the size of the partition is 100 GB, the size of visible folders is around 20 gb.. free space 118 mb... that means the folders and files that are not showing do exist.. just unable to see them... i tried switching on hidden files for finder - no success.

Do other peripherals work when connected to the MBP?

Can't mount external drive after erase

I have a 40gb hard drive that I erased and formatted as fat. Specifically, formatted as FAT, 0 data after trying 7pass and getting an error. I want to install the disk on my PC and reinstall XP on it. My problem is that when I did this I got an error (cannot remember type) and now the drive doesn't show up in disk utility, my desktop or my PC anywhere. I don't know where to go from here. I've tried a couple of Partition Managers, both on the Mac and PC with no luck. Also tried Diskpart from the PC terminal with no luck. I'm not very well versed at using terminal on either machine but it looks like I'll have to resort to it to solve my problem. I have an IBook running OSX10.58. My PC is a Dell 2400, Win XP sp3. Help of any kind appreciated.

Problem solved. I moved the jumper pin from Cable Select to Master. I formatted it in windows ntfs. Don't care about the data. I'm going to do a fresh install of XP sp3.

Can't see external drive after Leopard installation

Hi there, i hope i'm i the right place! I have just installed Leopard on my Intel iMac 1.83ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb HD and it no longer sees my external Maxtor One Tough 3 HD. Disk utility says it doesn't recognise it. I have checked the Seagate site for a Leopard update for Intel Macs but nothing yet.
Any ideas anybody?

Apparently turning off the password security on the drive from a 10.4 machine has fixed it for at least some people w/this symptom.

How can i restore all my emails from time machine after mavericks installation?

ALL of my emails disappeared from all my mailboxes after Mavericks was installed. When I try to restore from external Time Machine from earlier yesterday, for example, nothing happens. Can anyone help me with this huge problem?

Can't see anything in external drive after renaming a folder

Hi all,
I can't see anything on my external drive after renaming a folder. I have the drive set up as a Windows drive with access through the volumes folder (I had to transfer large amount of files from a PC and have it be readable on my MacBook Air); I read a FAQ to set it up a few months ago and it has been working fine since then. I saw the same issue come up with a PC HD on a PC, but the solution was for a PC. I don't see anything else like that in the support community (or if it's there, then I'm not searching for it the right way). There is no partition on the drive and it still shows as having the same amount of data written on the drive as before the accident.

If you upgrade the your router, it would be the firmware that will be upgraded. For more information regarding upgrading the firmware, try this link.
For your external drive, you might need to map the drive again with a different name.

Can I install OS9 on an external drive from Mavericks? I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on both my MBP and 27" iMac. I have my original OS9 install disc. I'd like to install OS9 on an external drive so I can use some classic apps that I'd like to use.
I tried to install directly to an external drive, but when I click on the Mac OS Install icon, I get the message "You can't open the application "%@" because it may be damaged or incomplete." The icon for Mac OS Install is the generic page with an A. Figuring that Mavericks doesn't recognize the app. Then I restarted and held down the C key - no luck.

Go to the printer manufacture website and download the drivers for your printer model for OS X v10.9 Mavericks.
Then open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print
Select your printer on the left then click - (minus)
Then click + (plus) to add the printer.

No, sorry. it won't work with the 2007 MBP. You can replace the optical drive yourself - just go shopping at OWC.

you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.
