Can't delete files in Adobe Bridge. "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient permissions." I am only user/admin. Can delete in Finder with PW only. Have run Disk Utility.

This is a MBP 13" Retina with flash drive. It is only a few weeks old. Problem started in last few days. I ran check and fix permissions in Disk Utiliity. Also made sure the folder with all my photographs has RW permission for me through Finder > Get Info > Sharing & Permissions. None of this helped.

Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

You can try to repair the permissions for the Firefox application files and folders.
    You can also do this:
    * Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re)install.
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded.

  • When I try to upgrade to the newer version of Firefox, this is the message I get (I am using OS 10.4.11): The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.

I have recently dropped Earthink as me dial-up provider. I now am using Virgin Mobile Broadband2GO. I was using Safari. I am now using Yahoo! Mail Plus. It suggested I switch to Firefox. I had an older version of Firefox (2.0.0.6) and started using it. It suggested I needed to upgrade because many of the newer web sites wouldn't work well on this older version. I downloaded the newer version and proceeded with the installation and it would tell me this: '''The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.''' I have re-downloaded and tried it again two more times. I haven't a clue what that means or what to do about it.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

  • The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privil

I am trying to empty my trash...and can't. I keep getting the above error message. How do I correct this? How do I empty my trash??
    Help!! And thanks.

    well ....
You can try one more thing: Put the folder on the root directory on the external drive, then boot the Mac in Single user mode and enter a Unix command (rm) to get rid of the folder.
BUT!! Using 'rm' from single user mode can wipe out your entire drive, OS, data, everything if it is done improperly. I would not want to recommend you do that ...
How close are you to an Apple Store? You could make an appointment with a Genius at the local Apple Store, take in the external drive, and ask them to delete the folder. That is "overkill", but it is safer than sending you into Single User Mode and running unix commands that could do irreversible damage if done wrong.
One other thing you can try: Open Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. Select the external drive, then run Repair Permissions on the external drive. When that completes, move the folder to the trash and use the Option Empty Trash technique that we tried above:
    - Press and hold the mouse button on the Trash icon in the Dock. The context menu for Trash will display.
    - Press and hold the Option key.
    - Select Empty Trash from the context menu for Trash.
    - Release the Option key.
Good luck. Sorry I don't have the magic bullet to solve this on the first try. (jk)

  • Dialog box says "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privliges for some of the items." How can I install it in my Aplications folder?

I am running 10.5.8 on a quad core 3.0 GHz Mac Pro. Have 2 GB RAM, and 2TB Hard drive with 538 GB space remaining. Have never had this dialog happen before.

I assume you are attempting to install a newer version of Firefox?
    It seems the solution is:
    # Download a new version of Firefox to your Desktop.
    # Delete the current version in your Applications folder.
    # Install the newly downloaded version.
Note: Your bookmarks and other data will not be affected.

  • I have downloaded an update to Firefox, but when I try to load it I get this message, "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items" and I have no idea what it is talking about or how to change it.

The previous version of Firefox is still on and operational. I get this message when I try to drag the Firefox icon to the application file icon. Since this is my computer, and I am the administrator, I don't know what privileges I lack, or on which items. If there is a way to correct this I would like to do so and activate the new version. It looks like the new version is 7.0.1 for Mac OS. This happens everytime I try to load the new version by dragging the icon.

I am able to open and use 3.6.8 but it wont over write the 2.0.0.14 version.

  • Whille copying error ""The operation cannot be completed because you do ...

Hi there I read a lot of post regarding this problem, I have some files that I copied from a USB drive that I can't copy since I have the error "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." when I try to copy them to another disk (trying different disks there is no difference)

Right-click on the file and choose *Get Info*. At the bottom of the window you will see *Sharing & Permissions*. Click on the lock and enter you password. If your name is there change the permission to Read & Write. If not, add your name to the list and make sure it's set to Read & Write. You should now have access.

It gives me the message 'the operation cant be complete because you dont have permission to access some of the items'

Then use a proper backup application.
Periodically using drag & drop isn't very reliable or complete, and backing-up your entire system is much better than just some selected data.  When your internal HD fails (they all do, sooner or later) or something else awful happens, reinstalling everything can be a very large, tedious, and error-prone process.  Among other things, 3rd-party apps will have to be reinstalled from the original discs or re-downloaded, and purchase keys or serial numbers re-entered.
You already have Time Machine -- it's built-in to OSX, and very easy to use.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
And/or, you can use a 3rd-party "cloning" application such as SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner.   See Time Machine vs. Clones and Archives for an overview of the differences.
