I'm not sure I understand why you say "I want the excel file storing part outside the case structure".
From the rest of your description, it sounds like you want to write to file only if something is true. That means that you put the write to file function inside the TRUE case.
You can pass the file refnum into the case and back out again, if you need to. Pass it straight thru in the FALSE case, and thru the WRITE FILE function in the TRUE case.

  • What is the "Other" category under storage and how can i delete items from this?

My disc is almost full.  "About this Mac" says that I have 47 GB of "Other."  What is this Other and how can I delete items from this?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Can't delete items in my calendar

    HI!
I'm using the Mozilla Thunderbird calendar on my computer at work and I was previously syncing it with the iPhone calendar using Google calendar, but that didn't work out too well as meetings we're placed at the wrong time and as I couldn't even book meetings at the end. So I decided to invite myself to all meetings and accept them using my iPhone instead (not the most efficient way, I know...). That way, both calendars were updated. But now I've encountered a whole other problem. None of the meetings I have accepted on my iPhone can be deleted or updated, no matter if I or someone else has arranged them. How do I get rid of the meetings that I don't want and how do I avoid this problem in the future?
    Best regards,
    // Marcus

    There are several ways
         - Selecting the event and hitting the "delete" key on your keyboard (as Wayne Contello said)
         - Selecting the event and opening the "edit" dropdown menubar item, and then selecting "delete"
         - Selecting the event and right clicking, then selecting "cut" (this option puts the event on your clipboard)

  • Can't delete items in sidebar in finder

i can't delete a folder thats in the sidebar. when i command click all it says is "open sidebar preferences". when i try to move the folder over to the same folder thats in the sidebar it says "the alias (foldername) can't be found because the original item can't be found". it won't let me delete the alias, so when i click "fix alias" it comes up with a box telling me to find the source file. but it won't let me click anything so i'm forced to say cancel, and when i say cancel i have box pop up saying "error code 8060".
how can i fix this and delete the folder that i have in the sidebar in finder?

Hi Debbie, try holding the Option/alt key while dragging off, or maybe it's the CMD key, can't quite remember.

  • Can't Delete Items from Music Library

I've upgraded to 7.01 and can no longer Delete items from my normal music library, whether they're checked or unchecked. It used to work with the Delete Key, now that does nothing...and right-clicking on the song gives no delete option. Also, with the song highlighted, the top menu Edit/Delete option is greyed out.
In other words, I can't delete any song from my library. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
    K Culberson

If the songs are greyed out, it sounds like you're looking at the contents of your iPhone while connected to iTunes. If that's the case, you would need to do all your editing on your library (not the iPhone's contents) then re-sync the iPhone to your library.

  • How can I delete items purchased but never downloaded?

I have several TV shows and movies that are on my cloud that I purchased years ago on my iPhone, now they are on my ipad but since I never actually downloaded any I can't delete them...help?!!?

If you mean that they show in the Videos app then check to see if Settings > iTunes & App Store > Videos (in the 'Show All' heading) is 'off' - if it's on then set it 'off'.

I had this problem, too. What worked for me was going into Settings > iCloud > Photos on my iPhone, and turning off iCloud Photo Library.

  • Outlook 2010 Calendar issue - can't delete items of shared calendar, but can move it of

So I'm deploying Office 2010 to our group and our office assistant/receptionist helps manage several calendars and he was able to do so witout problem after the upgrade from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2010. But the other day out of the blue he started to not
be able to add meetings to peoples calendar, but that now works in part to the /cleanfreebusy switch, but he is not able to delete meetings from other peoples calendar. He keeps getting the following error mesg: "Could not complete the deletion.
The items may have been already deleted or moved. "
He does have full editor access for the calendars. The other users are still using Office 2003, except for two (who are using 2010), but he has the same issue with their calendar also. Now here is the really strange thing, he is able to drag and move (holding
the shift key down) the appointment from the users calendar to his and then it's gone from the other persons calendar, then he is able to delete it from his calendar without any issues.
I have removed and recreated the Outlook exchange mail profile. The meetings he puts on peoples calendar does show on those peoples calendar. I've run every Outlook command
    line switch I could find.
    Help!

    Dear David,
Based on my research, this issue might be related to many factors, such as some third-party add-ins’ conflicts. At this time, I suggest checking the issue by
    starting Outlook in safe mode.
Start the Outlook program in safe mode
    ==============
    1.
Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to
    Microsoft Office.
    2.
Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click
    Microsoft Outlook.
If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Office program, we can try to disable them. Normally,
you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Outlook program:
    Disable add-ins
    a.
    Click
File menu à click Options à
Add-in à click Go button in the Manage:
    Com-in Add.
    b.
Check if there are any add-ins,
clear the checkbox to disable them.
    c.
    Close the Office program and
    restart it.
    d.
Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In,
restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.
    Best Regards,

  • Can't delete items in "Send" folder when iCloud account disabled.

I'm trying to simplify my email by using gmail as my one account through which all e-mails are directed.
I am using Apple Mail, latest version.
I've managed to find out how to do almost everything, so that all e-mails come in through my gmail account, and I can send using multiple accounts.
But, when I try to disable my iCloud account, I can no longer delete e-mails in the "Sent" box, even if the sent items were from my other accounts. I click on 'delete', and all that happens is that the email header changes to grey. If I 'right-click", then I have the option to 'undelete', which turns the header back to black.
If I re-enable iCloud, then I can delete the e-mails, but once I disable iCloud email, then the most recently deleted sent items are back again.
The other thing I notice is that when iCloud is disabled, there is no 'Trash' folder in my email programe.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

No, the only workaround is to remove all icons using a terminal command and to re-add all that you want by dragging them onto LaunchPad.

  • Now that I have backed up, can I delete items from my desktop? One of the reasons I got the time capsule was so that I could free up some space on my computer. I am confused about whether the backup will one day remove my photos/video

I purchased a 2TB time capsule yesterday. I set it up as a router and did the backup no problem. I then navigated the backup folder and found that all my photos/video that I am nervous about losing are on there. So far so good.
Taking a step back, the reason I bought the time capsule was 1.) I needed a router 2.) I have a mac and 3.) I am running out of disk space on that mac (I shoot and cut a lot of video and have years of high quality pictures on my mac hard drive)
Can I now delete them from my mac computer to free space? I have used standard external disk drives in the past, but the whole "Back Up" piece of things has me confused. I love the idea of backing up my computer so I want to keep that functionality, but will the drive still function as a static external hard drive? Or do I need to move that material in seperately as a folder outside of the backup folder?
I am nervous that if the backup overwrites information as the disk space becomes limited that in 10 years when I fill this drive up, that I will lose all of my photos that are part of the backups that I am running now.....
Or worse, I am nervous that if I remove things from my mac right now, that the next time that a back up is performed that it will lose this data as it is not currently on the device I am backing up? How does this work?
I apologize, the back up is a very new concept to me and I want to make sure I do not goof anything up.

    applefool wrote:

That's an entirely different thing from backups.  A backup is an extra copy, in case the original is lost or damaged.   Additional space is just that -- more space for originals.
While it's possible to use the same disk (such as the TC's internal HD) for both things, it's dangerous -- when (not if) something happens to the TC, you risk losing the originals that are on it.   To be safe, you need (at least) two copies of everything important, in (at least) two different places.
Many (including me) recommend at least three copies (originals plus 2 backups).  While it's not common for the Mac's hard drive to fail about the same time as the backup drive, it does happen.  There are several threads here where it did, and very expensive data recovery was needed, but in some cases everything was lost.
So as the others recommend, getting an external HD for the stuff there isn't room for on your Mac is one solution for not having enough space.  But you might explore getting a larger internal HD.   If possible, that might be bettter.
Then, also get another external, for "secondary" backups, so you're doubly protected.  If you get a portable model, you can take it offsite for even better protection.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details and some suggestions.
Can I now delete them from my mac computer to free space? I have used standard external disk drives in the past, but the whole "Back Up" piece of things has me confused.
You're not the first or only one.
There are different types of backup apps, so there are different answers for the different types.
As the others have posted, Time Machine will, sooner or later, delete it's backup copies of things that are no longer on your system.  Depending on how long the original was there and when backups were run, that can be in as little as 24 hours, or as long as there's room.   So no, don't take the chance with data that's important!
Is there helpful information on how to add an external drive to your backup set up?
See the green box in #2 of the FAQ article.  All you have to do is format it for a Mac and remove it from the exclusion list.
Once I set it up, will I need to leave the hard drive plugged into my mac in order for the data to be backed up?
It can only be backed-up while it's connected.
If I do, and a back up is performed without the hard drive attached to my computer, will it remove the backup of  what was on the hard drive
No (unless you leave it disconnected until Time Machine starts deleting old backups).
It will back up the external when it's connected, and not complain if it isn't.
