Can't delete old version of Skype

I have 2 versions of skype on my iMac and can't delete the first. I had version Skype 2.8.0.722 then I subsequently upgraded to version 5.0.0.7994. However, the later version did not seem to overwrite the first and the old version always stills opens up when I turn on the computer. I then have to eject the old version and open the the later version. When i try to drag the old version to trash, a dialogue box opens saying "The item “Skype” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted."
Can anyone help?
thanks
Ri

You say you are trying to eject Skype which doesn't sound right and sounds like you may be running it from the desktop.
Did you definitely install correctly - downloaded the app, expanded the downloaded file and then dragged the app onto your Applications folder? If Skype 2.8 is located there it would definitely be overwritten by the new version, prompting you with a warning that you're about to overwrite an older version.
Have a look in your Application folder and check that Skype is there, highlight it and do Command+I and that will confirm which version number it is. If you also have the Skype app on your desktop do the same to confirm that is the later version and drag it on top of the Applications folder. If it's not on your desktop it must be lurking in another location on your computer so in Finder do Command+F and search Skype - it should show you where they're all hiding.
HOWEVER, before you commit to Skype 5 have you read the negative press and had a look at the Skype forums which are full of vitriol about this hideous new un-Maclike incarnation of what is a great app?
Edited to add: If you're still having trouble deleting one of the versions you could try an app like TrashMe ( http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33863/trashme ) but it'll probably delete all your Skype files and you'll need to start again (that's what it did to me but once I re-logged into my Skype account all my contacts re-appeared).

  • Can anyone tell me why I can't update my itunes on my p.c?  I get a message saying: the feature you are trying to use is on a net work resource that is unavailable.   Tried uploading from websit, get msg can't delete old version.

    I need some serious help!
I have been trying to update my itunes to version 10.7 and my Quicktime to version 7.7.3!
    Having no luck!
So I tried selecting repair software on all of the Apple applications and they seem to have worked.
Then I selected look for upgrades on my itunes (Help) main screen
It said their were two updates -   Itunes  10.7   and  Quicktime 7.7.3
I selected the option to update and the .exe files were loaded to my  Windows 7 p.c.
However after part of the Itune update completed a message came up on the screen
saying   "The feature you are trying to use is on a net work resource that is unavailable.
    O.k.
I then went to the itunes website and tried again.  This time it checked my system the process seemed to be working and all of a sudden I got a message saying my old itunes programs could not be removed and or deleted.  So I tried to delete my old version myself without success it won't let me.
I've run out of options and am not completely fustrated.
I have itunes on my desktop, my iphone4, my ipod and in my car.
Anyone have any clue how I can resolve this problem?

Which particular .msi file does the message go on to say cannot be found? (Several different .msi files might be mentioned in this context: itunes.msi, bonjour.msi, AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi, etc.)

  • Install update of itunes -won't let me because it can't delet old version

I went to control panel and tried to remove the itunes that was there. I couldn't. It said to talk to software person. Can anyone help me? I can't access itunes AT ALL now. The files are there but cannot be accessed. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thank you

OMG! I am so glad I am not the only person having this problem. I have been trying to figure this out for 2 weeks now. I followed all the steps to remove Quicktime and the old version of itunes. I also went in manually to remove the apple software update in the regedit, it stills says it can't be removed when I try to install new itunes.
I can't use any of my ipods now. I CAN NOT WAIT for someone to help us with this issue.

  • Can I delete old versions of JRE?

I am currently running JRE 6.1. Can I delete all the old versions? These are the ones currently installed on my computer:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment SE, v1.4.2_03
    and of course,
Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Thanks for the help with this.

yes i have a question about this also. i have deleted and still see that it works with some websites. but each older version takes up about 90 MB size. the updates will not be left without deletion if there is no use for it. so, anybody has anything to say about this.

  • Can't delete old version of itunes for xp

When downloading the updated version of itunes, the installations stops and windows installer pops up. How can I locate itunes.msi. unable to to delete the old version of itunes.

These sorts of msi-related troubles have gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly this time?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

When I open the .sqldeveloper directory, I see the following directories: 1) system1.5.5.59.69 2) system2.1.1.64.39 3) system2.1.1.64.45. Can we safely delete the older versions?
I would like to save some disk space.
    Appreciate your inputs.

Update: 11g also comes with its own SQLDEVELOPER. Is it possible to uninstall/delete the sqldeveloper under $ORACLE_HOME? I am facing disk space issues.

  • J2SE Runtime Environment - can I delete old versions?

Hello - I know nothing about JAVA so this may be a silly question. My computer has been running very slowly lately, and I noticed I have 3 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 updates - update 6, 9, and 10. Can you tell me if I can delete the older updates? They're huge files, and I'd like to delete them to free up space if it's advisable.
    Thank you.

Shouldn't, I repeat shouldn't, not won't, be a problem, but that won't help with your "running very slowly" problem.

  • Can't delete old iTunes after Mountain Lion install

I updated my Macbook Pro (late 2008 version) to Mountain Lion and everything was working great until I tried to open iTunes from the Dock and got a message about it being unable to open, investigated the Applications folder and discovered that I now have two versions of iTunes, 10.6.3 and 10.7. 10.6.3 is in the applications folder but 10.7 is in a sub-folder within Applications. In the past I've organized apps in folders according to subject - home office, internet, graphics, games, etc., and have had no problem deleting old versions of Apple apps after system updates by either dragging them to the trash or dragging the updated version into the applicable folder and using the "replace" function. Now I cannot move either the new or old version of iTunes to trash or between folders. I'm getting a message "iTunes cannot be modified or deleted because it's required by OS X".. I've searched these forums and googled the question, and the only solutions I've found have addressed Windows PCs.
From checking the "Get info" panel I can tell that the 10.6.3 version was installed prior to installing Mountain Lion, and 10.7 appears to have been installed either with Mountain Lion itself or in a system update shortly thereafter. I tried unlocking 10.6.3 in the Get Info panel, but that didn't allow me to move 10.6.3 to the trash.
    Thanks for any help.

Sure, but its the best you learn how to use the terminal. OS X is Unix and the most advanced tasks can't be done in the graphical enviroment:
    1. Open Terminal (You should startet in your "home" directory, this is the default)
    2. Type: mdls /Applications/iTunes.app (This will output a lot of information)
    3. Look for the last keyword "kMDItemVersion", it should show the program version (e.g. "10.7")
    4. From now on what to do depends on the position of the iTunes version you want to delete. If this is the most recent version you will leave this file alone. If this is an older version of iTunes you will want to delete it. So there is a decision to make.
    4a. Leave this file
    or
4b. Delete this file with: rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app (maybe the permissions don't allow this to do, I could not test it)
    5. After that you could use the finder to move your regular iTunes version to your desired position
    6. If you most recent version is in an other directory, e.g. /Applications/Music/iTunes.app, you have to do the steps above with this path
It makes sense to locate first the iTunes version you want to delete. You can get this information with the showed mdls command or with the information dialog of Finder. Click in Finder the particular iTunes icon once, so it is selected, show the information dialog (cmd+i).

  • Deleting old versions of Ipod

Can deleting old versions of Ipod for Windows in Add/Remove programs safely free up disk space without harming the library? I need to make space on my hard drive! Any info would help. Thanks!

If you have itunes 7, you can delete/remove all of them. If you want to be on the safe side, remove all but the most current one (aka 2006-06-28)

  • Can I delete early versions of "Lightroom Database 2 Preview.lrData

Can I delete previous versions of "Lightroom Database-2 Previews.lrData

    Thank you, Jim!
Just to clarify--I was puzzled upon first reading your "No".    However, upon reading further, I now will happily delete the old programs. (2.667 GB!).  It was interesting to see the size increase for each one--from 207MB (3.4) to 780MB for 4.4....  The Control Panel (Win7HP) only lists 4.4, so I'll have to delete the old programs up to & including 4.3.
Your quick response was very much appreciated!

I thought I could do the same with my other Adobe program files, but only the CS6 programs are listed.  Does this mean the previous files are automatically deleted when upgrading?

  • Old versions of skype (3.8.115)

Hello, please let us log in to old versions of Skype. I've been using the 3.8.115 version for many years and it's always have been my favourite Skype version. I loved the chat interface, it was clear, in good soft colors and the messages were aligned - one on another, in the same spot. Actual version of skype has much worse chat interface, with many weird colours, messages are thrown to both sides and the adressess nickname field colour is darker (which should be lighter). You don't have to support and upgrade the od version of skype (but, hey, why not?) but you could just let us use them, let us log onto them. If a Skype user wants to use the older version why don't you let him doing that?

It's not about the RAM, it's about the graphical userinterface which is just bloated. I am using a GPU from the stone-age.
However, as I said, all Microsoft Installer Setups were removed from the Skypeservers, so no links from this forum showed me a setup.
Nevertheless, I've managed to download some old setups via archive.org but I don't know how long they are in the cache of it, so I'm just posting some links here now and close this thread.
(All these setups are signed by Skype, if you want you can check the hashes.)
