Can't delete or save new bookmarks in safari

I am running OS X 10.8.2 and safari version 6.0.2.
Safari is not allowing me to delete current bookmarks or save any new ones. Manually deleting them from the bookmark page does nothing once I close out and reopen safari. Same goes with saving new ones. I attempted to look at similar threads to find a suggestion and what I found was the advice given to those questions can't be applied to this situation. Mainly because the file path they suggested to go doesn't exist on mine. Any help will much appreciated.

Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’renot going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

  • I can not delete or copy new files to my Iomega external hard drive

    Hi,
I can not delete or copy new files to my Iomega external hard drive. Opening hard drive folder I can see that I can not overwrite it. I have heard that I need to install some program for the external hard drive to operate properly in Mac.
Please help what to install or there is some other option.
    Thnx

I'm not the expert on this since I have never done it. It sounds like you may need a data rescue program like Data Rescue III. I believe you can download a demo and see if you can see the files. If you can, then you can buy the program and retrieve the files. I don't know if Disk Utility can restore them--I think they have to be visible but this is not something I have ever had to do.
In the meantime, don't do anything with the drive--you don't want to overwrite any files. Hopefully all or most of the files are still there and you will be able to retrieve them. The less the drive is used, the better your chances are of retrieving the data.
Forgive me for not realizing that there were files on the drive that you wanted to save. Upon re-reading your question, I now see that there were. I should have known to warn you, and my bad that I didn't.
    Good luck!

  • Whenever I add a new bookmark into Safari, it disappear the next time I launch it.

I am now using Mavericks. However, whenever I save a bookmark in Safari, it does not appear in Safari (the bar above the page). I have reinstalled OS X but it's not helpful. How can I solve this?

You want to transfer purchases from the iPod to your iTunes account.
Connect the device to iTunes but do not sync.
    Select File > Transfer Purchases.
This will copy the content purchased via iTunes on the iPod to your iTunes account.

My iPad won't accept new bookmarks in safari.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the iPad shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the iPad back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • I can neither save new bookmarks nor delete existing ones.

My bookmark system worked until a few days ago, and now will not let me save new pages or delete existing ones. Tried the two methods described on main site, neither worked.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Ios Safari. How do I save new bookmark in new folder AT THE SAME TIME??

    I'm dumbfounded.
I'm on ios7 using an iphone, on Safari...
and I find a page I want to bookmark.
So I click the "share" button, click "Bookmark" to add it. Fine. Then I get options to choose a folder to store it in. Yay!
But nay! There is no option to save it in a brand NEW folder that doesn't already exist!
Do I REALLY have to cancel, click the bookmarks menu, click edit, click new folder, create a new folder... then go back to the share button, and save the bookmark in the new folder??
I can't be bothered to count the number of steps I have to take to do this but, it seems like TOO MANY!!
Am I being dumb? Is there an easier way?
Am I the only one who finds this infuriatingly inefficient?

To emphasise my point: To do this it appears that I actually have to:
    1. click Cancel (upon realising I'm an idiot for thinking it could be so simple)
    2. click the bookmarks menu,
    3. click Edit,
    4. click New Folder,
    5. type the name of new folder,
    6. click Done.
    7. click Done again.
    8. err... So "done" doesn't mean done apparently, so click Done YET AGAIN
    9. then click the share button
    10. click Bookmark
    11. click Location
    12. choose the folder
    13. click Save
Who is designing all this software? And how did they get the job?

  • Safari wont save new Bookmarks

No matter what I try, Safari 1.3.1 will not save a new Bookmark. If I drag to the Menu Bar, use the pulldown etc, when I reopen Safari the Book mark is gone.

Safari 2.0 (as part of Tiger) has an Import Bookmarks option in the File menu. Not sure about your 10.3 copy though. You can install Safari Enhancer to enable the Debug menu (which has this Import command hidden therein). Good luck.

  • Bookmarks box will not show up and I cannot save new bookmarks.

I cannot save any new bookmarks and the bookmarks box to enter in information about the website you want to save will not pop up. I already did the trouble shooting for extensions and themes with no results. What should I do?

Have a look at this rather long article [[Lost bookmarks]]
The article covers most reasons why bookmarks may be problematic. I would also recommend you make a manual backup of any bookmarks you currently have to guard against further loss and any accidental overwriting. See [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks#w_manual-backup| manual backups ]]

  • Why can't I create a new bookmark?

For the last several weeks I've been unable to create a new bookmark on my Mac Pro. I can do it on my MacBook, which is networked with the Mac Pro and synced through .Mac, but all the bookmarks I thought I was creating on the Mac Pro are not there. Wassup?

No, it's not a bug; it's intentional. You can revert to the old behavior by installing the following add-on.

  • Lost bookmarks, force quit and re-boot with no change. still cannot save new bookmarks. is there a solution?

    help

    Hello Badgeptfc
I would try first to reset all settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. You will not lose any data by doing this and test it out. If you still cannot save a bookmark, then you will need to restore your iPad and not restore from back up. The instructions for restoring are outlined in the article below.

  • Why can't I add a new bookmark, all of a sudden

I am unable to add new bookmarks. This happened a day or two ago. I did the reset toolbar thing in Safe Mode, but it didn't help.

  • Cant add new new bookmark in Safari

Quitting Safari after adding a new bookmark results in losing the bookmark when I reopen Safari. Quitting Safari after deleting a bookmark results in the deleted bookmark reappearing when I reopen Safari. Any suggestions for fixing this problem.  This problem does not occur if I close but do not quit Safari.
    OS is 10.7.4
    Safari 5.1.7
2.5.3 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacMini
    4GB Memory

Quit Safari. Disable bookmark synchronization, if applicable.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar. Copy the following line into the text box that opens, then press return:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the Finder window open. Relaunch Safari. Select File ▹ Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Test. If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put back the file you moved, replacing the newer one with the same name. Close the Finder window and post again.

  • Unable to save a Bookmark in Safari

I try to add a bookmark in Safari by choosing a location; execute the command and no bookmark gets added.
This started when I upgraded to Mavericks. I must use a different browser.

Yes, the good old days, when you also had a chance to edit the sloppy descriptions that some webpage designers use to define their webpages.  Such as, for instance, descriptions having absolutely nothing to indicate the name of the company whose page you're trying to bookmark.
Command-D does work, but I agree with the OP: the old way was better, and I'd like to disable the reading list.  I never use it.  I bookmark things in an organized fashion, and the new Safari seems to do everything it can to get in the way of doing so.

  • How can I watch the save password in iPad3 safari ?

Hello all my apple friends. Please tell me how can I watch the save passwords in my iPad 3 safari.
I save my password in safari but I want to know how can I watch this password .
    Please suggest me .....

When you type a letter you can see that letter for a second and then it changes to the dot. That's how it works. I suggest writing the password down first.

  • I deleted some files in my Documents and Settings. Firefox no longer responds. I have re-installed but no luck. Where can I access and save my Bookmarks? Thank you.

When I try to open Firefox, I get a dialog saying: ''Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system.''
I can't close Firefox, and it doesn't show up in the Task Manager. I've tried re-installing Firefox, to no avail.
Which folder contains my Bookmarks?I would like to save them and do a fresh install.
    Thank you.

I am going to ring optus tomorrow and request for the network to be unlocked or for a new sim. I do know someone else who uses them but i can't get in contact with them at the moment. I did read that maybe as the sim card is quite old that once you update you can have problems even though it was working just fine before i updated the software. Thanks
