Can't Delete or Unlock Locked File

Running Mountain Lion on  Macbook Pro
Hi, Y'all.
This issue relates to a document that I locked to prevent accidental erasure or editing but now the ownership has 'gone strange' so I can't unlock it, delete it, or change the access privileges via Get info window.
Here's what the Permissions list looks like:
Fetching…?
I am able to open the file and cut copy paste the contents to a new document, so I just want to delete the troublesome file. I'd also like to know why the permissions have gone 'pear-shaped' but that's secondary to a suitable solution.
From a related thread, I've tried:
Booting from the Recovery drive, etc. = No joy, still locked!
via a prescribed command in Terminal = No joy, still locked!
Help Appreciated.

Norton's tentacles can run pretty deep.
-- JDee
They sure do. It took me several steps to THOROUGHLY delete all the Norton stuff. The Uninstaller on the Symantec site got rid of most files, the uninstall Terminal script got two more, but the invisible NAV (antivirus) Scan file in /Library/Startup Items/ was a bear.
The only way I could do it was to copy everything except the NAV file to an external disk, erase the whole computer HD, then clone the external back to to the computer.
Whew! It finally worked, but it was a lot of trouble (but I got a real clone out of it—thank you SuperDuper!).

How can I delete the photos or files in my icloud storage that is no longer needed?

Explain how it didn't work and what you are trying to delete.  Since icloud doesn't store photos except for those in a backup (then delete the backup); photos in photo stream do not count towards your storage limit.

  • I can not delete or copy new files to my Iomega external hard drive

    Hi,
I can not delete or copy new files to my Iomega external hard drive. Opening hard drive folder I can see that I can not overwrite it. I have heard that I need to install some program for the external hard drive to operate properly in Mac.
Please help what to install or there is some other option.
    Thnx

I'm not the expert on this since I have never done it. It sounds like you may need a data rescue program like Data Rescue III. I believe you can download a demo and see if you can see the files. If you can, then you can buy the program and retrieve the files. I don't know if Disk Utility can restore them--I think they have to be visible but this is not something I have ever had to do.
In the meantime, don't do anything with the drive--you don't want to overwrite any files. Hopefully all or most of the files are still there and you will be able to retrieve them. The less the drive is used, the better your chances are of retrieving the data.
Forgive me for not realizing that there were files on the drive that you wanted to save. Upon re-reading your question, I now see that there were. I should have known to warn you, and my bad that I didn't.
    Good luck!

  • I can not delete some power point files in the trash.help?

I can not delete some power point files in the trash.help?

    Hi Gary,
The presentations were created originally with PowerPoint. I have been using them on both KeyNote and PowerPoint with no problem, even after updating to MountainLion. Problems started at the 10.8.3 upgrade. The installation was an upgrade form Lion. Yes I mean Open Office, I am able to open the presentation with Open Office and play it with no problems.
The presentation gets loaded by Power Point and the Power Point freezes. Key Note can not even load it. Stops 3/4 of the way. This happens with ALL my presentations.
I want to thank you for your help.

I have over 11K songs on my i tunes and almost 30k songs on my music.  It's taking up too much room on my computer.  Can I delete the my music files just have the I tunes,   or delete the my music file and then drag the music from I tunes and put it in the my music.
I sure there are a lot of doubles in the my music file.
I also have an external hard drive.
    Can you please help  me.
    Thank you so much.

Yes... With iTunes closed move the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> to the top of the external drive, e.g. as X:\iTunes where X:\ is the drive letter, then click the icon that starts iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key and keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose then browse to and open the file X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl - your library should show exactly as before. Double check that the media folder under Edit > Preferences > Advanced now reads X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. (I'm assuming here that your library won't be old enough for the media folder to have been called iTunes Music as it was back on iTunes 8.) Once you've checked that use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files in case the library is connected to any files stored outside of the media folder. This brings in copies of those files.
If you think there is media in <User's Music> that was not previously connected to the iTunes library you can move this into X:\iTunes\Automatically Add to iTunes otherwise you can discard files that you know to be duplicates.
As for duplicates already within the library, or created by moving the remnants of <User's Music> into Automatically Add to iTunes, Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls. (Such as lost playlist membership!)
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • To save room on my hard drive, once (fcp1).dv files have been created, can I delete the original .dv files?

I've got a lot of what seems to be redundant media files on my hard drive, but I'm not sure how necessary all these files really are.  To save room, once (fcp1).dv files have been created, can I delete the original .dv files?

This is FCP X related.  I haven't used Final Cut Studio.  Regardless, for some reason I have many clips twice.  The only difference is in the name, not in the kind or size of the clip.  For instance, I've got a "clip-2008 09:25:11.dv" and a "clip-2008 09:25:11(fcp1).dv".
I don't know how that clip was created, but all my clips have been duplicated that way.  Now it may be that I ingested them in iMovie and then used those clips in FCP X - or perhaps when FCP X says this new version "needs to convert your clips".  But the point is that half my media space is taken up by these duplicate files, and I would like to remove one or the other of those duplicates.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks.

  • I can't delete the .thumb.db file from a client computer

In my LAN I have a main computer, the server, that shares a folder. Other users of the LAN can access to the foler and copy, modify and delete files. However, many times when the user try to delete a folder get an error that says that the file thumb
can't be delete because the file explorer has opened the file. That's is not true.
The user has the needed permissions to delete the files, but for some reason he can't.
I know that one solution is to show icons instead of miniature in the file explorer, but it is not a solution in this case, because the user uses many photos and it's easier to see the miniatures instead of the icons.
How can I solve the problem and delete this file? Any easy and permanent solution? because this occurs in many folders and the user don't have a hugh knowledgement of windows.
    Thank so much.

    Hi,
We can disable the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files via Group policy to fix this issue:
    1.Run gpedit.msc
    2.Navigate to:
       User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer
3.Set “Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files” to Enable.
4.You may need to log off or force group policy to update before this takes effect, I am not sure.
To force group policy to update, run gpupdate /force
Now you will need to clean the thumbs.db files that are already created. To do this we are gonna use the disk cleanup tool.
Press again Windows key + R to start run and write there cleanmgr then Enter。
This will start the Disk cleanup tool. Select the drive you want to clean , if you have more drives you gonna have to repeat this for each drive.
Disk cleanup tool will calculate for a bit what files can be deleted and then the following window will appear.
Make sure the Thumbnails is checked and press OK .  That is it. Now you can delete those folders you want to go away.

I've tried to download some podcast content from iTunes. But I've failed to download these files. In the iTunes, there is another same contents that has a little different name of file. So I wanted to delete these files from my iPhone. But I can't. I know how to delete the file but that way is not working. Could you let me know how can I delete these files?

Yes, i did. But that was not working. Normally that way is good, in my case that is not possible.

  • Can't delete Time Machine Backup Files - Authentication Issue??

Using time machine on my 20" iMac, Leopard v10.5.2 with no issues on an external Firewire 800 drive. When I go to the Time Machine view and choose a file, then the gears icon at the top so I can "Delete all backup copies of this file", when I choose to do that it brings up an authentication window asking me for my admin password however it will not let me click or type in the dialog box (though I can choose the OK or Cancel buttons). Given that I can't authenticate I can't delete back files, any clues??
    Thx.
    JS

I have the exact same problem, so your not alone.
When you select a file, and then delete all backups of this file, you get asked to authenticate, but aside from being able to click any of the buttons, it will not allow you to enter a name and password.
I first thought this may be due to the text not being visable, but even when entering the correct admin username and password, still nothing happens. All your able to do is click cancel to get out of the time machine area.
Clicking OK just gets a wrong password entered message.
I've tried doing a permissions repair and a disk util check, all is fine. Even techtool pro 4.6 checks out fine.

  • Can I delete the actual .pkg files after they've been installed?

    Hi,
My hard drive is totally full and I'm going through deleting everything thats accumulated over the years. I've found the packages/.pkg files that get downloaded automatically taking up 2Gb of space and I would really like to get rid of them. I've got the receipts folder, but the actual downloaded files are all still there. Can I delete them without ruining my computer?
    Thanks,

  • Can you delete old back-up files?

There tens of thousands of files in my iPhone backup area (Library>Application Support>Mobile Sync>Backup), most with old dates from previous back-ups. It doesn't appear that the backup process overwrites the old files.
Can I delete these old dated back-up files to free up space on my Mac? Can I assume the iPhone backup process is not incremental and a restore would not need these old files?
    Thanks

I'm on 10.4.11.... forgot to update my sig (now updated).
I'm only concerned about it for eating too much (useless) space on my laptop, and perhaps running into some sort of file number limitations (if any).
I called Apple support on it and they said it's a result of me manually backing up (I don't auto sync backup due to the time involved, I right click the device to initiate the backup... maybe once a month).
When you manually backup, they said the system does not delete older backups. They said if you backup manually, the system also expects that you manage your old backup files manually. They said the manual backup files are not incremental - they stand alone each time you do it - so it safe to delete the older dated files, although advised to keep at least the two most recent backups intact.
    Thanks for the input everyone.
