Can't delete, rename files, or move to another folder

I had posted earlier about not being able to delete, rename files, or move to another folder. It never was resolved here, and I guess Apple still hasn't done anything about it. Here's a great workaround I found though in case others need something. Download the program called "Unlocker", it's free and you can get it at http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ When you get the message about the file being in use, even though QuickTime isn't even open, you can unlock the f'ing file and do whatever you want to then, move, uh DELETE, or rename, or whatever. Try it, it's the best thing going so far seeing Apple isn't doing anything about this problem.

Hi there,
I am still struggling with this problem. Actually my coworker has the same machine, Apple pro with windows xp installed, but he does not have this problem with his quicktime 7.5. I uninstalled 7.5 and installed 7.2, but it did not solve the problem. The fact is that I don't have the problem in my laptop which I am using it in the office. I am still trouble shooting. Hopefully I can find an answer.
Peace

  • How can I delete a file from an invisible Library folder on a backup

Somehow, when installing RealPlayer I managed to get something called RealNetwork (a Folder full of files) installed in my User Library. It was 395.62 GB so must have been some sort of malware. I was able to find it and delete it from my hard drive. BUT I had backed up my hard drive to a non-bootable backup the day before so that file is still in the invisible Library folder on that drive, taking up almost 400 GB there, too.
Does anyone know how to delete it from the backup drive since I can't boot that drive?
I'm using Mavericks 10.9 on a MacBookPro with a 2T Seagate backup drive.

Here's what I just did. I went to the Go menu and pressed Recent Folders, and in the command box typed a path that should have taken me to the backup drive user library folder, and it did. So thank you. I managed to figure out from what you said, something to do, though I still struggle with the techno-babble. It seems the folder that was 395.62 GB that should have been backed up to this drive is not that size on the backup, but only 28.88 GB. I deleted it anyway.
So, now I'm back to figuring out what just ate up so much of my backup drive so suddenly, and in about the same amount as removed from my internal drive. I still suspect I'll find that folder somewhere.

  • Deleting & renaming files - is there a shortcut to finder?

I am a recent convert from PC to Mac. So far so good. However, one thing starts to drive me up the wall which is deleting/renaming files in programs such as photoshop, word, excel etc.etc.
As far as I can tell, this is only possible in the finder menu. Is this Correct? I am using a lot of folders and subfolders - sometimes 3-4 levels deep. Every time I need to change/delete a file or filename - lets say while in photoshop, I have to go to finder and click my way through several levels of folders to the actual file I need to change. This is somewhat annoying and timeconsuming.
Question 1: is there a way to do these operations in - lets say photoshop directly?
Question 2: If not, is there a shortcut key that would point me automatically to the file in finder where I can make the changes?
Your input would be very helpful and save me some aggravation.

    Hi Greg,
Thanks for your input. You are correct as far as "save" and "save as" is concerned. Windows and Mac work the same way.
However, as far as I can tell, in Mac you can only "delete" or "rename" a file in "finder" which forces you to open up finder and locate the file in order to delete or change it.
In windows you can do these 2 functions directly in the program (such as photoshop, excel or words). You do not have to go to "explorer or root directory" to make these changes which I believe would be the equivalent of "finder".
In any case, Terence solved the problem. By command clicking the name (title) of the file in any program, it opens up the directory in "finder". This way makes it easy to select the file and do the changes.

  • Creative Zen 8GB - Can't delete certain files (Write Protected it sa

I have added a bunch of mp3s, images and videos to my player, but now when I try to delete some of these files I get a "you can't delete this file because it's write protected", if I check the properties of such files they are infact write protected but there's no way for me to uncheck the box and make them deletable.
Anyone with the same problem or with a handy solution?
P.S. I updated already to the latest firmware.

Yes; I got my Zen this week and had the same problem when I copied over some MP3 files from a CD-ROM, which are write protected when the CD-ROM is created. I thought that the Zen was defecti've but now feel this is either a programmers misunderstanding of Windows Read Only functionality in the Zen -or- when you protect a file from deletion within the Zen, this is what the firmware sets to flag the file as 'Protected (I have not researched this yet).
My Fix: For some of you this will not be the answer you are looking for but it works and will kept your Zen music file structure and library intact.
You may need to switch to MTP mode in the creative software before you are allowed to use this technique. Search the forum where to find this checkbox. Otherwise your XP may be able to nati'vely open Explorer windows to the Zen.
Setup: Open two Windows Explorer windows on your desktop. In one, create a new folder on a hard dri've that has enough space to handle all the music files on your Zen. In another Explorer window, navigate to the Zen music folder.
    1. Use Windows Explorer to copy ALL of your music files From the Zen to a new folder on your computer's hard dri've. If you don't have enough room on your hard dri've (and if not, why don't you? ) move files in stages.
    2. When the files are in your hard dri've's folder, right-click on the new folder and select Properties. Deselect (Uncheck) the Read Only attribute checkbox. If another dialog is displayed, select "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" and click 'OK'. This will make all your files deletable on the Zen.
    3. Copy (drag) all the files back to your Zen, overwriting the original files.
That's it. In the future perform step two before copying any files to the Zen.

  • Can't Delete Some Files on Media Vault

I have hundreds of files on my Media Vault, and I often delete old files I
no longer need. But once in a while I can't delete a file, and get this error
message:"You require permission from Unix User\nobody to make changes to this
file." Does anyone know how I can get in touch with User\nobody so I can ask for
    permission?
    Thanks
    Michael Trombetta

No, I tried that before I posted. I am the administrator of my systemS.
Actually I'm trying to move the files and directories from a permanent directory (HP defined) to a user defined directory. I was able to move 90% of the data with using the context entry "Move to Folder". I was trying to move the remainder, but I keep getting messages from UNIX that I don't have the authority. I'm running Win 7 Pro on an HP 6250. I have tried to change the permissions to no avail, see attached. Should I try an XP system?
I did check and the files are marked as N (not indexed). I had 3 screen prints but I see no way to include them.

How can I delete a file from Adobe Acrobat Reader DC?

What operating system do you use? Where do you store the files?

  • How can I delete the files .DS_store in Mac OS Yosemite?

How can I delete the files .DS_store in Mac OS Yosemite?

The .DS_Store file is normal. It holds certain settings related to the folder it is found in. Removing these files is futile, as they will come back, as you have observed.
If you are seeing them on your Mac, that means you have changed settings so that your Mac is showing invisible files in the Finder. To reverse that, run the following command in the Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
This will hide them, and any other invisible files, from view.
If you are seeing them on a Windows machine, just ignore them. They're not doing any harm.
If you found a Terminal command that is supposed to stop them from being created, I would be extremely skeptical as to the wisdom of running it.

Or, does AirPort Utility scan for the Time Capsule and then not find it?

  • I can't delete a file in the Content-Management

    Hello,
I can't delete a file in the Content-Management, altough I have full control.
I get the following error message:
    System error (com.sapportals.wcm.repository.ResourceNotFoundException): null
    Many thanks for the help.

    Dear SAPMuffel ,
As far as we can see the error "com.sapportals.wcm.repository.ResourceNotFoundException" is telling that the resource you are trying to delete could not be found, that is also to say, it might not exist any more.
So please let me know exactly how you can reproduc this issue?
and what kind of file it is? under what kind of KM repository?
Is there any other file under the same KM folder?
Also you can reproduce the issue and then check the lastest defaulttrace file under this folder:
    ../j2ee/cluster/server0/log/defaultTrace.*.trc
here you can find the detailed exception.
    Best Regards,
    Thunder

  • I  can't delete raw files in bridge

I can't delete raw files in bridge anymore. I used to and it worked. Now if I click delete button, nothing happens.

Adobe doesn't support CS5, an when I spoke to Apple, I was told that this is a known issue with OS 10.8.5 and that they're working on a patch.  In the meantime I'm using Adobe's DNG as a workaround.
Have not heard before of this Known Issue, also find it hard to believe being true. But can't test my self because I only have CS6 and CC installed and always use Photodownloader to convert to DNG upon import. I have just installed the 10.8.5 update and checked in Bridge CC pointing to an attached card reader. no problem in showing the CR2 thumbs, it works as always and as expected.
To my knowledge Bridge CS5 is already 64 bits and I can't think of any valid reason why an OS update would cause this problem so suddenly (but I'm not a technician I have to confess…)
However, I would first try a check and repair permissions from Apple Disk Utility and also try Cocktail (good and cheap 3th party maintenance application for Mac) to clear caches and check permissions.
Also try a new user account just for testing to rule out your current account as the culprit.

  • Can i delete a file on my external disk?

I have a toshiba external hard disk. When i plug it into my macbook air, i can only see my documents and copy them to the macbook or copy files from macbook to hard disk. But i can't delete any file on my external disk. How can i can do it?

It sounds like you originally used this drive with a Windows PC. Drives formatted as Windows NTFS can be read by a Mac but not written to (files cannot be deleted). If you want to keep the files that are on the drive, you can use Paragon NTFS (it's about $20) to install a driver allowing your Mac to write to the drive and delete files. This will allow you to continue to use the drive with both Mac and PC.
Or, if you have copied off all the files you need, you can use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder to wipe and reformat the drive to Mac format. You will no longer be able to use the drive with a PC.

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • Hallo! How can i delete my files wich are saved not on the C: drive?

Hallo! How can i delete my files wich are saved not on the C: drive?

I'm guessing there must be more to this question than you are stating.
But to answer the question you asked, if you want to delete files that are not on the C drive, select the files and then delete them (press the Delete key, and then Delete from Hard Disk or not, your choice)
