Can't delete, rename or unlock a file

My wife (running 10.8.5 on a 13" MacBook Pro July 2012) changed the name of a downloading file seconds before the download completed.  She now has a 15.6 Mb .mp3 file on her desktop which can't be played (I have tried MPEG Streamclip as well as Quicktime), deleted ("The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found. (Error code -43)"), renamed, unlocked or have its permissions changed.  The information window looks like this:
Sometimes these "ghost files" can be cleared by relaunching Finder - didn't work, neither did a restart.  I used Disk Utility to check the Hard Drive - OK - and correct permissions - lots of changes but not to this file.  I tried changing permissions on her desktop folder using "apply to all" but that didn't work.  I tried using the command "chflags -R nouchg" in terminal but that didn't work either (found in another discussion) probably because dragging the file to terminal only inserted the name and not the full path to the file.  I then tried restoring my wife's desktop file from Time Machine. That removed all the files from her desktop except the errant file without replacing them because Time Machine skipped that step because the permission were incorrect.  I spent 3 hours copying the deleted files back manually from the Time Machine Back up.
In the course of copying from Time Machine, I noticed that the back up copy of the errant file on Time Machine was behaving properly, so I copied it back to Desktop hoping that it would simply replace the errant file.  Instead, I got two copies of the errant file which now both behave normally:
changed to but when I renamed one of the files, the other lost its properties and went back to being untouchable.
One solution would be to start up from Time Machine (as a network disc - I believe this is possible but haven't done it), completely reformat the Hard Drive and then restore my wife's Hard Drive from the Time Machine back up.  This seems like a lengthy and risky procedure just to get rid of this annoying file.
Any other ideas?

The following will delete that file immediately, no questions asked:
Pay attention to these directions very carefully, and use at your own risk. One typo (an extra space inserted) could destroy your entire installation. Be absolutely certain that when you enter this command it looks EXACTLY the same for spaces and case (excepting the Chinese characters) as it does here.
Open Terminal.app in Applications>Utilities and enter
sudo rm -rf
Important, leave a space after the -rf and drag the problem file into the Terminal window, which should then appear as:
sudo rm -rf /Users/el/Desktop/xxx.mp3 (with the three Chinese characters replacing the xxx)
There are single spaces only between sudo and rm, between rm and -rf and between -rf and /Users....  (It is possible, but not likely, that the Chinese characters may appear with spaces, including a backslash \ after the file is dragged into Terminal).
Hit enter/return, whereupon you will be asked for your admin password, which won't appear in any form as you type it in. (If you have never used the sudo prefix before in Terminal, you will get a warning. Ignore it and proceed anyway.) Then hit return again. The file should be gone from the Desktop.
If you like, you can do everything here up until hitting enter/return, then post back with resulting command in Terminal copied and pasted before proceeding, so I can check that it's looking OK.

    Hi sutterrot,
    After a successful conversion from PDF to Word, you need to download the converted file locally on your computer.
    You can then choose 'Enable Editing' button and then delete images/text or make other changes.

  • Can't delete, rename files, or move to another folder

    I had posted earlier about not being able to delete, rename files, or move to another folder. It never was resolved here, and I guess Apple still hasn't done anything about it. Here's a great workaround I found though in case others need something. Download the program called "Unlocker", it's free and you can get it at http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ When you get the message about the file being in use, even though QuickTime isn't even open, you can unlock the f'ing file and do whatever you want to then, move, uh DELETE, or rename, or whatever. Try it, it's the best thing going so far seeing Apple isn't doing anything about this problem.

    Hi there,
    I am still struggling with this problem. Actually my coworker has the same machine, Apple pro with windows xp installed, but he does not have this problem with his quicktime 7.5. I uninstalled 7.5 and installed 7.2, but it did not solve the problem. The fact is that I don't have the problem in my laptop which I am using it in the office. I am still trouble shooting. Hopefully I can find an answer.
    Peace

  • In making a "highlights" movie, using clips from different imported iMovie events, can I delete the larger iMovie event file from the Events browser and still work w the smaller clips in the Projects browser w/o having the larger files still loaded?

    I have sucessfully imported 150 Sony digital 8mm movies (each one hour in length) into iMovie as 150 iMovie events. I have since successfully converted them from their original 13 Gb (.dv) file to an exported smaller 1.3 Gb (.4mv "large file") movie that I am happy with, using the iMovie projects browser. So now I have 150 " .4mv" movies on my internal HD as well as about half of my original raw data " .dv " movies on my internal hard drive.
    Due to their large size (over 2 Tb), I do not have all the larger raw data (.dv) files on my 2Tb internal drive, just about half of them. What I want to do now is to create a new project in the Projects browser for each of my kids, and reload, starting with Tape #1, each of these larger files and do a highlights movie for each of my kids, wherein I pick out smaller clips from each 1 hour .dv iMovie event and paste them into the appropriate kid's Highlights project in the Projects browser.
    Here's my question: If I load the first 5 large files back onto my internal HD, and paste in various shorter clips into each of my kids' Highlights project, and then if I delete those first 5 large files (they are backed up on 2 other 3Tb external HDs), can I keep doing this (reloading the next 5 large .dv files to work with), and ultimately take each of my kid's Highlights project and export as a .4mv movie EVEN THOUGH the earlier large .dv files are no longer on my internal HD, OR does my iMac need to have all these larger files loaded on my internal HD for me to eventually export each of my kid's Highlights project to a .4mv movie?
    I have a 2011 era 27" iMac desktop w 2Tb HD internal and 250 Gb flash drive, and Lion OSX and iMovie 11.

    Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2  "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
    I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
    Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.

  • How can I delete an alias of a file that has been deleted already?

    A couple of days ago I took a screen shot of my flight's itinerary for this summer vacations. Without noticing I created an alias of the file...I deleted the screen shot and now I just have the alias and i can not delete it nor dragg it anywhere .... it gives me the option to delete it or fix it but nothing of that works ... I tried to hold command and dragg it but it wont go anywhere and i also tried dragging it to the terminal but it wouldn't go there either...the file just won't go anywhere!!
    Help please!

    1. Consider using a Database.
    If this option is bit "too heavy"
    1. Using a BufferedReader read the whole line.
    2. Use StringTokenizer to split into tokens .
    You would get name and age.
    3. If thereare more attributes of person consider creating an Object to represent this person.
    class Person{
      private String name;
      private int age;
      Person( String name , int age ){
      public int getAge(){
       return this.age ;
    }4. Put these entries in Hashtable using name as key
    HashTable  h = new HashTable();
    // ... somewhere  later in code
      Person p = new Person( name , age );
      h.put( p.getName() , p ) ;
    // Somewhere later
      String name = "xyz" ; // or read from somewhere
    ((Person)h.get(name)).getAge();

  • Can't delete Apple folder in Common Files

    I went to the Genius Bar today.  They were not able to solve my problem but they did a full restart of my iPod and told me to reinstall iTunes on my home computer.
    Before reinstalling iTunes, I followed Apple's instructions for deleting all Apple software on my computer (Windows 7).  However, I have been unable to delete the Apple folder in the Common Files folder.
    I searched for hours online for solutions to deleting this file.  It looks like several people have had this problem and several suggestions have been made  but nothing has worked for me.
    Among the things I have tried are stopping and restarting explorer.exe.  I also downloaded Byetunes but it looks like I can only delete one file at a time and there must be hundreds of files in this folder.  This is madness.
    I would deeply appreciate as complete a list as possible of ways to delete this file.
    It should not be this hard to find out how to delete a file!
    Thank you.

    Followed the procedures as layed out in Apple Support online, but now I still can't delete the "Apple" folder in "Common Files" (during the 'verifying you've actually deleted iTunes' step...).
    Do you have the iCloud control panel currently installed? If so, try uninstalling that. Can you do the deletion now?

  • How can I delete pages from a pdf file

    How can I delete pages from a pdf file

    Hi timk,
    None of the Acrobat.com online services allow you to edit a PDF file. But, in checking your account, I see that you purchased an Acrobat Standard subscription, and you can certainly use that to edit a PDF file.
    Have you downloaded and installed Acrobat Standard? It sounds to me as though you may be opening the PDF file in Adobe Reader, rather than Acrobat. (Reader doesn't allow you to edit PDF files.)
    If you haven't already, download and install Acrobat from https://cloud.acrobat.com/acrobat. Then, make sure that you're opening your PDF files in that rather than Reader, when you want to edit them.
    Please let us know how it goes!

  • Can I delete adobe/common/media cache files?

    I've a seriously shrinking hard disk.  Have found 20 gig of data in my Home/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Media Cache Files.
    Am I right in assuming I can safely delete these files and if I need them again, all apps that created them (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro etc) will just rebuild them?

    I recommend you to use specific software like Onyx or CleanMyMac to delete cache files. These programs aren't perfect, but it's very difficult to have a problem with them.

  • Leopard FAT32 Issue, Can't delete Panasonic P2 media locked files

    For all final cut users now using a P2 workflow - I ran into an issue with leopard and have to downgrade to tiger.
    Leopard is now honoring the "read only" setting on all the media files created by a panasonic P2 camera. My workflow was to dump a card onto my macbook pro while shooting on another card. When the transfer was complete, I would erase the media on the P2 card and put it back in the camera to continue shooting.
    Unfortunately in Leopard, I cannot do anything to delete the files on the P2 card. I cannot unlock them in the get info window, I cannot unlock them in the terminal, I cannot drag them to the trash and force empty the trash, and I cannot even delete them via "sudo rm -Rf". I have tried numerous ways of formatting the card via the terminal, but something about its formatting is very specific, and the camera will not shoot on the card if I format it in OS X.
    It seems the Leopard Fat32 implementation here is too strict - as I can't remove locked files. Even when running as sudo - Has anyone been able to do this?
    Unfortunately I have to downgrade if I can't solve this, because formatting the card in the camera is not an option, as I need to run a continuous shoot.

    Yes, this is true - In Tiger, a flawless way of erasing the card without messing up the formatting on the mac was to use the panasonic software. But now in Leopard, you cannot even use the panasonic software to erase the card, because something in the system is not allowing anything locked on a fat32 partition to be modified.
    It seems someone tech savvy out there could figure out the proper terminal command on how to format those cards - Which brings me back to the question - why does "sudo rm -Rf" get a permission denied.

  • How Can I Delete All Keywords in All Files?

    I'm starting to get the hang of how to use the keyword functions in Lightroom, and I can see that I've been sort of mis-using them for a while.
    In one of my catalogs, I would like to eliminate ALL the keywords I associated with ALL the files (about 3,500) in the catalog, and start over.
    Is there any easy way to remove all the keywords, without having to go through every image individually??
    Even folder by folder would be preferable to image by image.
    Doable?
    Thanks,
    --PS

    Actually, what worked was the solution I found here:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/2.0/WSA83AE0BC-9C98-4699-BCC2-33FDE227AF92.html
    "To permanently delete a keyword tag from photos and the catalog, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the keyword tag in the Keyword List panel and choose Delete from the menu. You can also select keyword tags and click the Minus icon (-) at the top of the Keyword List pane"
    I went through and deleted the keywords themselves, and that removed them from all the images/files that had those key words.  That also allowed me to leave the few keywords I wanted to actually keep.
    So that problem is solved, I think...
    Thanks,

  • How can I delete ALL of the offline files in the catalog?

    I have Photoshop Elements 10, and a catalog with over 60,000 items in it.
    About 10,000 of those items were on an external drive ("E: Drive"). The E drive crashed, and all of those files are now on a different external drive, the F drive.
    On the E drive, they were in a very disorganized folder structure with hundreds of sub-folders. I think the easiest thing to do will be do just dump all the catalog entries related to the E drive and re-catalog them from the F drive, with a better structure.
    However, the only way I can see to do this is to manually delete EACH of the hundreds of subfolders.
    Any ideas for me?
    Thanks!
    Mary Miller

    If you're willing to directly modify the database, this procedure can be used to change all instances of your E: drive to your F: drive.  The images will show in Organizer as "disconnected", but at least you can use "Reconnect all missing files" and point the reconnection process to the root folder of your F: drive.  Or, you can use the Thumbnail View to select all the "disconnected" files and delete them from the catalog (but not from disk).
    The fastest way is to directly change the values in the catalog.pse10db database. The database is a SQL Lite database, so if you know (or know someone who knows) how to run SQL queries against a database, you're in luck because Adobe did an excellent job of designing a highly normalized database schema.
    I highly recommend first trying this on a copy of your database. In general, the procedure goes like this:
    Run a SQL query against the volume_table table to see a listing of all the rows.
    Note the values of the "id" column for your "E:" volume and the "F:" volume.
    Run a SQL query against the media_table table to update the value of the volume_id column, replacing all instances of the "E:" id number with the id number of your "F:" drive. The SQL query will look something like this:
    Update media_table
    set volume_id = "<your new value>"
    where volume_id = "<your old value>"
    I use the free Database.Net SQL tool:
    http://www.fishcodelib.com/Database.htm
    which is simple to install -- just extract the executable file.
    Good luck!
    Ken

  • How can I delete all those ! dead files from iTunes without having to do it manually?

    I recently merged 2 iTunes libraries into 1 on a PC. This has resulted in 1000's of dead files, notated by a ! (exclamation point). Does anyone know of a quick way of removing all of these without needing to spend many hours doing it manually?

    Lost & Found
    Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist (it may take some time to count the tracks that are to be dropped). Create a smart playlist called Lostmatching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You should be able to select all the tracks in this playlist with CTRL-A and then remove them from iTunes with CTRL-SHIFT-DELETE.
    Or use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to check for dead tracks on start up.
    However if the broken tracks are duplicates of non-broken files then I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates, merge ratings, play counts and playlist membership, and remove dupes with dead links as long as there is one real file to merge the stats to. See this  thread for background. I also have a tool called FindTracks for fixing the broken links if the files are sill there but not quite where iTunes is looking for them. For more details see this thread.

  • Can't delete folders in d:\Program Files due to TrustedInstaller

    Hi
    I have a new c: drive (its an SSD and I love it), but now I'd like to delete the Program Files on my second drive (which used to be my primary drive). I followed the instructions found in this forum below (I couldn't past a link here because apparently my
    account is not verified).
    1. Please navigate to the target file/folder.
    2. Right-click on the file/folder and choose Properties.
    3. Click the "Security" tab and see if your current user is listed in the "Group or user names" list. If not, please click Edit-> Add button, type the name of your current user in the "Enter the object names to select "
    box, then click "OK" to add this group.
    4. Select the user from the list and then check the "Allow" checkbox next to "Full Control".
    5. Click the Advanced button and click the "Owner" tab. Then, press "Edit" button.
    6. Select current user from the list and check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" checkbox.
    7. Click "OK" to save changes and wait for Windows 7 to transfer the ownership of all the objects on the partition.
    8. Click OK again to save changes and exit the Properties window.
    but when I try to delete the folder, windows 7 says
    "Are you sure you want to move this folder to the Recycle Bin?"
    I select Yes, then I get
    "You'll need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder"
    I select Continue, and then get
    "You need permission to perform this action
    You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder"
    I've tried running windows explorer as Administrator
    I've checked my user account and it shows me as Administrator
    I've verified that the owner is Administrators and that they have "full control" permissions on the folder.
    What else do I check? I've checked other posts and can't figure out what I'm missing.
    Cheers2u

    This could be due to the folder/file permission issue just as  ZigZag3143x explained.

    I have recently reinstalled my OS on a new drive and have just successfully restored my old bookmarks and imported any new bookmarks I had saved since the OS install. I just want to know know if it is safe to delete the json file i restored from since this was on the old drive I want to format and can I also delete the html file i created by exporting my new bookmarks before i started this process?
    Marc

    You can keep a backup copy of that old file or make backups of the JSON backups on the new computer.<br />
    You can decide for yourself if you would have a usage for that file.<br />
    If all bookmarks have been restored successfully then you won't need this backup and you can create a new backup regularly if you have modified or added bookmarks.
