Can't delete unwanted mail

After a minor app-freeze problem I restarted and discovered that now I can't delete some messages from my email (Apple Mail version 3.6 (936)) inbox: instead of moving to the Trash folder, the email stays right there in the Inbox and the title turns from black type to grey. I'm reluctant to trash the Mail prefs because There doesn't seem to be any way to do that without losing the Inbox contents. Is this a virus? Any ideas?

Is this a POP account or IMAP? If POP, open the Inbox of only one account (if you have more than one), click on Mailbox in the menubar and choose Rebuild. Wait patiently for Rebuild to finish, and be aware that for a short time all messages will seem to disappear.
Once the index has been refreshed for this Inbox, you should be able to trash the messages.
If IMAP, remove the account, and then add it back.
If you have any questions, ask before doing any of this.

When I go to type a mail adress on my ipad I get a drop down list of previous mail addresses including all the typo's and used once. There doesn't seem to be a way of deleting unwanted one's. Unless anyone knows better?

Close out of the mail app, double tap the home button and completely close out of the app.
then do a reset, no data loss. Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
then check and see if you can delete emails.

Whe I use my ipad to view my mail, I can move the unwanted mail to the trash without any difficulties. How come I can perform moving the unwanted message from the ipad to the trash but not the notebook and desktop.

Did anyone ever provide a resolution, because I am having the same problem.
My iCloud backup said yesterday that over 500 MB was being used by the Mail portion of the backup. So I went into iCloud.com, deleted all of the mail in my Sent Mail folder, then emptied the trash entirely. When I did that, it got worse; it said that 1.2 GB of the iCloud backup was taken up by the Mail backup. That doesn't make any sense. That is actually the opposite of what was supposed to happen.
Today, it is back to saying that Mail takes up 609.4 MB of space in the backup, but there is next-to-nothing in any of my iCloud email folders. What is going on?
Any suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

You do realize that you cannot delete the preinstalled apps?
If you have restrictions turned on - you may have disabled the deleting of apps as well. Settings>General>Restrictions>deleting apps>Off.
BTW ... You do realize that you don't have to start another discussion either - don't you?

Don't worry about your english, my Italian is probably even worse! If your applications and other data are synced as they should in iTunes, photos from the camera roll are imported to the computer, music is all in iTunes and calendar and contacts are synced to a supported application, the only thing you will lose is wi-fi settings (they can be re-done) and applicaiton data, such as scores, etc. After restoring as new, sync the content back. You will not be able to restore from a backup as the addresses will exist in the backup and just return.

I have two trash folders with different icons. The trash folder with a garbage bin as an icon has a Delete All function but the other trash folder does not. When I delete messages they go into the second trash folder. I then have to delete them one at a time. Then they pear in the trash folder with the garbage icon. If it is a Yahoo account (Y!mail) it will setup as an IMAP account and whatever is on the server will show up on the iPhone.

When sending an email (with iPhone 4, iOS5, Gmail) and you are starting to type the recipient's name at the "To:" field, the autofill function suggests addresses some of which are dated / no longer valid / unwanted ones, from previous recipients.
