Can't detect second display

I adore this shiny new iMac, but oy, is the learning curve (from 10.4) steep...
The current issue has to do with setting up a second monitor, in this case an old but serviceable 15" NEC MultiSync LCD.  I bought the correct adapter to attach to the venerable VGA cable on the NEC, but I'm not getting a signal to it and Displays shows only the main monitor.
My suspicion is that the NEC is just 'too old,' but I'd be happy if it actually could be used. Back in the day I was used to a LOT of real estate (20" Apple and 19" e-Machines) and it'd be nice to have that kind of space again...
Anyone have any suggestions? If I have to I can swipe my girlfriend's newer LCD display to try a different monitor, but it'd have to be returned before she wakes up.

I just tested with my Sony 3D display. The moment the HDMI cable was plugged in, "clone" mode was activated.
The HDMI port is quite deep, so make sure the HDMI cable is all the way in. The last centimeter or so is really stiff, so it may not be all the way in. The plastic shell of the HDMI connector should be flush with the case.

ATI Radeon 4870 won't detect second display I have a sony that come up as a sdm-hs95p and a asus that i want to connect they both have vga and both have conveters vga to dvi and on the asus it also has a dvi to mini dp because on the graphics card it has dvi and mini dp

You can't use more than one converter per display.
You need to get single converter that connects directly from the Mac port to the display.

Can't detect second piece IDE hardware

Quote from: LauritsT on 15-September-05, 14:30:15
Thank you for your replies. I have used the same config om my last MB, so I assume the jumpersettings are ok. I have my HDDs on different cables. Each IDE cable is attatched to a HDD and a CD-burner or DVD device. One HDD is a master and one is a slave. Same goes for the CD/DVD devices.
I'll try setting them to cable select and see if that will solve the problem.
If all of the above suggestions do not pan out try using a different IDE cable.  I had an identical problem to yours and after much consternation I decided that it might be the cable.  Sure enough after trying several extra cables I had lying around one worked.  The MSI one didn't work, other's that worked, (and still work)  perfectly fine in my other systems didn't work on my MSI board.  For some unknown reason that one special cable did.  Lest people think it was a simple configuration problem or that the connectors were not snug or properly set up this was not the case. The IDE system on this MB is , (or at least can be) very sensitive.

  • My Mac Pro Desk Top computer no longer can "see" my second display??

I've tried reversing the connections on the back of the MacPro but it still doesn't "see" the second display.  I've had these two displays hooked up for years with no problems.  I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and I just had the MacPro in the Apple Store for a  "One To One" transfer of data to my new MacBook Pro laptop.  When I brought it back home it still worked fine.  I then was cleaning up some stuff and I know I went into my "Users and Groups" panel in System Preferences and I did remove some items from the "Login Items" list that open automatically so maybe that is the problem??  I know the second display is getting power and recognizes it's connection to the compuiter because when I disconnect it, it says, "no signal" and when I reconnect it, it just goes to sleep.  Advice appreciated.

Some of the graphics cards that had two DVI connectors had one Dual-Link (suitable for all resolutions including wider than 1920 wide) and one Single-Link (suitable for resolutions up to 1920, but not wider). This does not appear to be your problem, since both are less than 1920 wide.
The "Drivers" business is a complete Red Herring (Not Applicable), as the Mac does not use Drivers for displays -- it uses a unified driver for the Display CARD, and customizes it based on the capabilities reported by the Display when connected. In order to get this to work, the display must correctly self-identify.
To verify that the display is correctly detected, look in:
About This Mac > ( More Info ) > Graphics and Displays ...
... a correctly self-identified display shows its Name and its maximum resolution. be skeptical, this information does not update when you plug/unplug the display, and you have to close and re-open this window (or possibly the entire program) to get the information to refresh after a change.
If either display provides a USB cord, it must be plugged in to complete the display connection and provide display ID and control (this is much more common with Apple displays that third-party displays).
Is there any evidence of trauma to the display connectors or cables? Any bent pins on the connectors?

  • IBook detects second display even though there is none

I recently purchased a 900MHz G3 iBook and I want to run OS 9 on it, for nostalgia and for some older apps. Anyway I wiped the drive and did a clean install of OS 9.2.2 on it but when it boots the screen shrinks to 640x480. I looked at the monitors control panel and it says my only resolution is 1024x768 and that a second screen is plugged in that is set at 640x480. The problem is that a second monitor is not plugged in, I did plug one in and unplug it to see if it would detect that it was removed to no avail. I installed OS X on it and it does not detect a second display and allows me to use the full 1024x768 resolution.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Thank you for the info. I just looked at your profile and do you really have an iBook G3 800? Perhaps your startup disc would work on my iBook G3 900 Mhz. Is there any way you'd be willing to create a disk image and upload it to my server? I do have a iBook G3 900 Mhz, so I would have a legal license to the software, so it wouldn't be piracy. Or if you have a .Mac account (MobileMe) you could place it in your public folder and allow me to download it.
If you would be interested or willing to do that for me, I could send you the details offline. Let me know at ryandary at mac dot com.

  • Can't detect Cinema Display after new patch applied

A few days ago I downloaded and applied a patch to my MBP for its display.  Now I cannot detect my 27" Cinema Display.  What gives?

I'm seeing the same thing on my macbook running as a closed clamshell connected to an external keyboard/mouse/monitor. It boots OK but if it falls asleep I'm in trouble. The external keyboard/mouse will wake it, but only for a few seconds before it falls asleep again. The only way to get it awake is to open the MacBook and use it as a secondary monitor. Kind of irritating since I use the macbook in this configuration often. I've also set sleep on power adapter to "never" to try to avoid the problem, but the system doesn't seem to be honoring that setting.
I'm guessing this might be related to the "extensive graphics updates" in 10.5.5, as I've only really seen the issue crop up since 10.5.5.

  • HP Phoenix computer can't detect second monitor

    HI,
I have used this for a while (18 months) on one monitor and wanted to extend the desktop to a second monitor - but the system fails to detect a second monitor when it is plugged in.
It has an AMD Radeon 6850 with two DVi slots - both monitors work as I can swap them over.  But neither the auto detect (HP Catalyst) or the manual detectoption  show up a second monitor.
I have updated the ADM driver, restarted etc etc........ not sure what else to try.  Any suggestions?
    thanks

  • Can't remove second display with 8800 GT. please help! this is frustrating!

I have dealt with this problem for a long time now, but having just bought a wacom tablet, I need to finally resolve it and I hope someone here can help because I am at my end with it. I just can't think of anything else.
I have a 8800 GT video card in a Mac Pro. All software is updated.
I have a 30inch apple cinema display, and was using it solo for a long time, then for a project, I hooked an old LCD monitor vida the VGA to DVI adapter to the second monitor slot on the card, and had both monitors running in the extended desktop mode. Everything worked fine.
The problem is, now that I want to get rid of the other monitor, my cinema display does not want to run solo anymore. I have tried rebooting with only the cinema display plugged in, I have tried switching ports on the card (both with and without rebooting), and I have tried unplugging the unwanted monitor. When I do ANY of these, the cinema display goes blue, then black, and the light on the front blinks three times over and over.
It is as tho the video card does not want to autodetect the displays, nor does it want to reset any settings and run without both monitors in extended mode. And since OSX does not give specific software for the video card, I am limited in displays to make any real changes. There is no option for turning off extended desktop, only mirroring the displays (which, yes, when I choose it then unplug the other display results in the same problem of no picture).
My wacom tablet uses the tablet as being the screen from corner to corner, so obviously with the extended display, the center of the tablet is not the center of the monitor and it makes it impossible to use easily.
Please, if anyone has any ideas for me, I am begging for help. This is frustrating to no end!!
    Thanks in advance.

    Buzz,
thanks for the help. I especially want to thank you for being the first person to reply a post of mine on this subject ever (on multiple help boards as well).
Unfortunately what you told me to do still didn't work.
When I re-mirror and then un-mirror the displays it puts it back into extended mode. and when I unplug the second monitor, the HD display shuts down and goes black. it will not turn back on (even with a reboot) until I have something plugged into the other port, at which time it goes back to extended mode.
This is really frustrating, and the first time I have felt helpless with my mac. I try support and they of course tell me they can not help me since the monitor's extended warranty ran out...even tho the computer's warranty is still up and this is of course a video card problem, not monitor.
I'm about to give up and either reinstall EVERYTHING on this **** computer (which will result in me losing a lot of editing add-ons and other programs I bought but stupidly can't remember where I got them from) or just throw the whole thing in the trash. (heh yes, I am that frustrated). :/

  • [SOLVED] Z77 Mpower can't detect second graphic card

    Hi everyone
I'm experiencing a problem with my Z77 Mpower.
It's not able to detect the second graphic card.
    The complete configuration includes:
    Z77 Mpower
    i5 2500k
    2*4Go G.skill 1866MHz
    GTX680
    8800GT
    Crucial M4 256Go
    Corsair AX750
The idea was recycling my old 8800GT as a dedicated physx card
Due to massive cooling the GTX680 will be installed on the second port
Both graphic cards works perfectly when installed alone and I also tested with a GTX570 and results are the same
When I install only one card, it works on 1st port at 16x or 2nd port at 8x,
but if there is 2 cards installed only the first works and bus-width is 8x according to CPU-Z, the second one is invisible in windows, GPU-Z or driver
I didn't tested the 3rd port because my sandy bridge has limited pcie lane
I tested it with bios 17.4 and beta H53, results are the same, I also tried with and without 6 pins power supply on the mainboard and the problem is still the same.
I tried this graphic cards configuration on a gigabyte z68 ud4 and same cpu, ram, vga and psu and it works perfectly.
Is there a bios setting to enable multi gpu ? (tried to enable igp multi screen without result)
Is it possible to have defective pcie port for multi gpu when all pcie ports works alone ?
I have another question about this motherboard
is it possible to have a dynamic vcore related to eist while overclocking ?
on the gigabyte z68 ud4 it's possible by setting vcore on normal and playing with load line calibration and offset
on the mpower this settings appears in bios but are not graduated the same way and I don't understand how they works.
    Thanks for your help

    Thanks for your help flobelix
I already tried and benched this physx configuration on my old gigabyte motherboard
in non physx games the 8x limitation barely don't affect the gtx680
in physx games the 8800gt isn't fully loaded and framerate is near the gtx680 alone with physx disabled.
this configuration gives physx graphical bonus without affecting framerate
the 120W limit of the MK13 may be for fanless use, I have 2 90mm fans attached directly on the heatsink and under furmark the card runs 20°C lower than stock cooling and is very silent
I also kept the stock molded metal plate that cool the power supply and ram under the MK13
But due to this cooling this card can't be installed on the first slot
on the gigabyte until you set the dedicated physx card in the driver both cards and all outputs on cards sends the same signal to screen (bios screen is also sent to all cards)
on my mpower only the first sends signal to screen, but i should be able to set (only for testing purpose) the 8800gt as main device and the gts680 as physx card
unfortunately it don't work because it looks like when a card is plugged on 1st port the mainboard disables the 2nd

  • Macbook can't detect external display via DVI cable

I just bought Samsung PX2370 monitor and attempt to connect it with my Macbook Aluminum (late 2008). I have mini display port to DVI adapter and DVI cable. When I hook up my Mac, nothing comes up. The screen on macbook goes blue briefly and then back to normal, but nothing has been detected. I've manually set the source of signal to DVI, and tried to use Detect Display but nothing happens. Even I try to detect the monitor by using Windows 7 (via bootcamp), the display remains idle.
I had tested the monitor using DSLR although by HDMI, it work.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey hparekh and welcome to the forum -
It looks like you have the correct hardware. You should check your connections... make sure your using the Mini DisplayPort and not the Ethernet port (common mistake) and all of the connections are plugged completely. Make all of your connections with your MacBook on and then turn your Dell on. You might need to go through your Dell's setup to make sure that it's recognizing a DVI input rather then HDMI.
Might be a bad DVI cable or a defective monitor or maybe a bad Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. Are they all new products?

  • IMac detecting second display, but no image on second monitor

I'm trying to use a Philps HDTV as a secondary monitor for my new 21.5 inch iMac.  I'm using a MiniDisplay to HDMI cable, and the iMac detects the TV just fine, but there is no picture sent to the TV.  I hooked up a MacBook to the same TV with the same cable, and it worked perfectly.  I've also hooked up the iMac with the same cable to a different HDTV, and it also worked perfectly.  I've run all available software updates, which has not resolved the issue.  I've also toggled between all the different display resolutions in System Prefs to see if that would make a difference.  I feel like I'm out of ideas on how to resolve this issue.
If anyone has run into this issue or has any other troubleshooting tips that I'm not thinking of, that would be amazing.
    Thanks!

Checked the mini display with Dell flat monitor and Samsung LCD tv , works perfect. The VGA port of my old monitor is not in good condition.

  • Can't detect second screen on macbook pro

I have a macbook pro and when i plug in the vga adapter to my computer it doesnt work, but it does work with other computers.

Sorry i was frusterated and just said that.
I have a 15 inch macbook pro from late 2009
I have the mini display port VGA adapter going to a VGA cord going to the tv. I know the cords work just fine because they worked on another computer. The problem is when I go to system preferences<displays and click detect displays, nothing happens. My computer wont even recognize an outside display.

  • Using Second Display

I am in the process of buying a flat panel LCD. It has a PC input. I was curious if it anybody knew if it was possible to use the flat panel as a secondary monitor. The trick is I'd like to use it wirelessly. Something as simple as sticking in a Wireless USB hub, and the Mac detecting it as a secondary monitor. (too simple for even the mac? =] )

    Hello,
The +iMac (Flat Panel)+ can use a second display via the MiniVGA connector but can only mirror the image of the internal display so if you have the 15" model you can only use a 1024x768 display. I don't think any of the USB/VGA adaptors are Mac compatible (or at least that I've seen).

  • Second display refresh rate lower in Mac OSX than Windows

I use a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB CRT monitor connected to my MacBok via a miniDVI to VGA adapter; I span the desktop on both monitors (i.e. I do not use the Mirror Displays option). I use this configuration in both Mac OSX and Windows (via bootcamp). On Windows, I can set the refreesh rate of my CRT monitor to 75 Hz at 1600x1200, but I am stuck to 60 Hz on Mac OSX at 1600x1200. To get a more respectable refresh rate on my CRT, I need to lower the resolution to 1400x1050.
Obviously, the video card of the MacBook can handle a second display at 1600x1200 at 75 Hz since I can do that on Windows. Any ideas how to get the same result on Mac OSX?

Either DisplayConfigX or SwitchRes X should be able to remedy this. But I am at a loss to explain why OS X would itself not allow for the 75Hz choice.
