Firefox is crashing or closing unexpectedly
== Description
==
I have a bad habit of leaving too many web pages open and leaving them minimized in my dock till I can get around to them later. This time it caused Firefox to eventually stop responding (rotating beach ball never stopped) so I planned to restart the computer and do the restore last session option, which I've done before, so all my open windows would be restored when the computer turned back on. So I started saving some text files I had been working on and starting closing programs that were open and closed Firefox. However the mistake I made was that I accidentally open Firefox again before restarting the computer. It opened and the "well this is embarrassing" screen came up but I wasn't ready to restore it yet. I wanted to reset the computer first to clear out RAM memory etc. so it hopefully wouldn't freeze up again. So I closed Firefox again and restarted the computer. When I then opened Firefox again after reset my home page came up, not the "well this is embarrassing" screen to restore the last session. Is there any way I can still restore all those open web pages or is it too late?

  • Usually after Firefox crashes I can restore session but sometimes it won't let me. Is there a way to restore a session once automatic option goes away?

    1. Firefox crashes and an error message appears.
    2. I open Firefox again.
    3. Automatically Firefox asks if I want to restore the last session or start a new session.
    4. Usually it works to restore a session, but at random times, it does not and the following happens.
    5. I move the mouse toward the restore session button but don't quite get there when my usual home page opens.
    Question: once this happens is there a way to get my old session back, like a place where you can manually request Firefox restart the last session?

    did not have that extension installed, but did it now and can't find anything there that would concern tab groups. (also referred to as Panorama). This session manager seems to provide a lot of stuff that the browser is supposed to do anyhoo, but with more options of configuration. Hope extension and browser won't cause a mess while attempting to do both the same thing.
    Yes, I know that Bookmark all tabs is still available via right click - after a google-search told me so. My feedback was - why remove functionality from the menu? It's really not overloaded - and I'd expect a menu listing me the complete set of functions a software allows me to do, unless it busts the menu. So I was just asking myself - how come it has been removed? Makes no sense to me.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Can I avoid having "Restore Previous Session" box when launching?

    After opening Firefox and then closing it normally (with the red X or using File | Exit), then the next time I open Firefox there is a blue window in the lower middle of the screen to "Restore Previous Session." What if I don't want that window there? There was no fault, no crash of any kind. I've disabled the "restore session after crash" but that didn't help.
    I do want the browser to remember my browsing history to help fill in the address bar.

    Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
    Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" if you want to restore multiple windows.<br />
    You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
    There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.<br />
    Firefox 4 uses a new build-in home page called about:home
    That about:home page only shows some snippets and has a button to restore the previous session if applicable.
    If you want a home page without the Restore Previous Session then set another page as the home page like www.google.com or www.google.com/firefox used in Firefox 3 versions.

    When you quit firefox with tabs and windows open it "remembers".  When you start Firefox it tries to restore the tabs and windows you had open.
    You may also want to check the preferences for Firefox:

    I have the same problem- my Session Restore quit restoring my sessions all by itself one day. I have checked the Preferences setting, I have been to the link cor-el provided, I even found a place in the preferences settings for the Tab Mix Plus add-on where you can select Session Restore BUT IT IS STILL NOT WORKING!!!
    Help! I rely on this feature!

  • When I close Firefox, my session can no longer be restored. This is frustrating because I have customized my App Tabs.

    The option to "Restore Session" does not appear. I get an ooops Firefox apology with only the option to start a new session.

    It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

    Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Is there a way to save a restored session (without opening it) to bookmarks?

    I kinda get carried way with opening tabs, like I'll have 50-200 open at any time. And you can imagine what it's like when Firefox crashes and you attempt to restore a crashed session - all the tabs reopen at the same time.
    Is there any way to save a crashed session's tabs/windows to bookmarks directly from the restore session list? This would be so useful... sometimes I just want to go to a couple places and then close Firefox, worrying about the crashed session later, and without having to open every single tab in it at once.

    It would be very practical if we could choose to save the crashed session as bookmarks into a date-stamped bookmark folder instead of restoring, and even an option to "copy to clipboard" just like "CopyAllurls" does (firefox add-on) - with title and urls, grouped by domain, for example. When a 200+ tabs session crashes, what we need is mostly to not loose track of what we worked with, but not strictly loading them all in one go at startup. Furthermore, whenever we really do load them all, then it would be smarter if Firefox loaded just a certain (configurable figure?) number of tabs, then waits for them to load, and fill in with the next tabs as the currently loading tabs finish. It should not attempt to load all 200+ simultaneously, as that creates other problems. Will look for any existing feature requests about this and chime in there. If anyone has a direct link to relevant feature requests, please post here. Thanks.

  • When the first version of the Restore Session tab was implemented in an update for Firefox?

    ''Duplicate post, continue here - [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/806369]''
    Essentially, I'm trying to find out how many sessions I can restore since, after the creation of this feature, I typically allowed the "Restore Session" Tab to remain in the window, allowing me to at least access the last few sessions later on when I'm much less busy. Unfortunately, I let it get a bit out of hand. Is there any way for me to find out how many sessions I have saved in this way by searching through files or folders affiliated with this browser? Even if the history clears about every 290 something days, are these sessions and the information they require stored in such a way that the clearing of history would not create a problem if I want to restore very old sessions that were left in this manner? (I recently changed it to allow all of my history to be saved, rather than just limiting the number of days, but I fear I might have taken this action too late. And I'm going to download a "Session Manager" add-on, to help me with this in the future, but, I'm still worried about these past sessions.) Any help or information would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

    You can only manage multiple sessions with an extension like Session Manager (extends the build-in session restore) or Tab Mix Plus (has its own implementation of session restore, so can be less reliable if Firefox doesn't close properly). The basic build-in Firefox session restore only handles the previous session. Firefox 4 has a button on the about:home page and a menu entry (History > Restore Previous Session), but Firefox 3 doesn't have that feature. Session Restore stores a list of currently open tabs, so the amount of history that you keep shouldn't matter.

  • How to use restore session in firefox 4?

    When I close sessions, the restore session does not respond when I reopen firefox and cannot thus restore previous sessions.

  • "Restore Session" in Firefox 2.x problem

    We are using custom authorization. All works fine...when user logout or close its browser, his session cannot be reused.
    Problem is with FF 2.02.
    If any instance of FF has been violate killed (from process explorer or PC has been rebooted), on first next start, FF is able to restore all sessions.
    The problem is that in our case, it can restore session on Apex 2.2 authenticated pages also!!
    Any help to ensure that this behavior cannot occur in a case of subnormal termination of Firefox browser?
    Apex 2.2.0.2 , Oracle 10.2.0.2
    P.S
    IE 6 or 7 is working OK!
    THX!

    Maybe you are right...but...
    <br>
    I tried the same test with my internet banking (cannot give you a link because it is secured with token), the same problem is somehow solved!
    <br>
    This mean that FF "restore session" cannot reuse previous session in any way. So it seems that this technology (it is not apex but some jsp version) can handle with this really big security issue.
    <br>
    Please understand that site like ours would like to secure our Internet clients who will make allocation, registratatio or even sell the stocks!
    <br>
    So could anyone help me to implement such a feature or point me to where to look for the solution.
    <br>
    THX
    <br>
    P.S.
    <br>
    Article (forum thread) is missing the point. With word you are not going to pay the bills or sell the stocks or do any manipulation with sensitive data through Internet!
    <br>
    <b>browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash</b> is on client side and it is not the default option. So we cannot place that kind of security in any way.

    5.0.1 Firefox, application froze then crashed. Restarted it, but no 'restore session' and i've lost all my tabs. Help please?!?!
    Done config:restoresession, and nothing.

    There shouldn't be any numbered sessionstore-##.js in the Firefox Profile Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    The presence of such files usually indicates that that was a problem with accessing the main sessionstore.js file that prevented Firefox from renaming the temp file with the number.<br />
    In this case you may be lucky that the file with the highest number may have that session.<br />
    You can try to rename the file sessionstore-3.js to sessionstore.js to see if that brings back the lost tabs.
    If you use the Time Machine then you can try to restore a copy of sessionstore.js from around the time that you lost that session.
