Can't download purchases due to download folder permissions on NAS

I downloaded several podcasts using my iPhone whilst away at Christmas. My media library is stored on a Buffalo NAS with the library xml stored locally and after syncing with iTunes I can no longer download new purchases reporting error - 5000.
"There was a problem downloading ************. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.
Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again."
I've investigated exhaustively to solve the issue. Apple's iTunes Store troubleshooting suggests the following:
If you encounter this issue while while downloading something from the iTunes Store:
Delete your iTunes Downloads folder, located in:
Mac OS X:
  ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads   Note: "iTunes Media" may appear as "iTunes Music. Also, the tilde (~)  refers to your Home directory.
However, I can't delete the Downloads folder because I do not have sufficient access permissions. Worth noting that the files on the Downloads folder correspond to those downloaded by my iPhone so the iPhone has caused this issue, even though I have been able to perform this task away from home before without these issues before iCloud and Match came along.
So, now I'm faced with a Downloads folder that I cannot delete even using Sudo rm -rf in terminal, CHOWN, CHMOD or even MV to relocate the files. There are no answers on this issue on the Buffalo forums so I am opening this frustrating issue up to the geniuses on the apple discussions group to see if anyone can help. Thanks

Okay, I solved it myself - surprisingly.
I logged into the NAS using Telnet as 'root' and this allowed me to delete the 'Downloads' directory without any permission issues. After re-opening iTunes it was able to download the backed-up purchases without error.
I don't know if the iPhone will cause permission issues again down the line though, so this may well be a bug in the latest iTunes version?

    Look for a folder called "Downloads" in your iTunes Music folder. If there is such a folder, look for files that would be the partial download and delete those, so that the download starts over from the beginning. Then try again using the "Check for Purchases" command under the iTunes Store menu.
    If that doesn't work and the problem persists, contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the form at the bottom of their web page and explain the problem to them.

    I have a really large iTunes library. Yesterday I purchased a movie from the iTunes store and couldn't find it. I located it in a download folder on my NAS inside itunes with a plist.

    I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
    How are you achieving the above? What are your copy setting in preferences? If you are manually overriding the copy-to by holding down the option key while adding media then that won't apply when you import a playlist (as in importing the .xml).  When you import a playlist like that you are essentially adding the files to the library again and it will obey the  preferences setting since you can't option add them that way.
    Correct on the .itl.  Only iTunes itself can edit that file.
    I think you need to review your basic wants/needs in doing all this.  If your reason for not wanting to use the Media Folder settiing is because you do not want it to go on the internal drive, but you don't actually mind if it organizes it as long as it is on the NAS, change the Media Folder preferences setting to the NAS and let it consolidate to there.  If you want to move the stuff but keep it organized in your own folder structure you may need to do it as I suggested initially.  Once it is on the NAS and iTunes recognize the file locations you can do what you can only do if you manually manage music which is move it around in Finder afterward once it is on the drive and recognized to tweak location to your final wishes.

    Recently I have experienced a problem with iTunes. Suddenly I cannot download my purchases anymore as it sais 'Cannot Connect to the iTunes store. try again later'.
    The funny thing is I can connect to the store itself and if I make new purchases it will download them perfectly fine unless I won't interrupt the download and ask at a later stage to load availabe downloads.
    I will also receive an email if a new episode of my series is available but since 3 weeks I can't load them either.
    My Internet is working fine and I made sure that all my software is up 2 date.
    I also contacted the support team but they couldn't help me and said I should try here in the Forum to get help.
    So Please help me
    I don't really know when and why this problem occured.
    It could be - but I don't think so - that it has something to do with the latest update or because I built in a new internal hard drive - as I needed more space - and I moved the itunes library on the new Drive and created an Alias folder on my HP disk. But I haven't experienced any problems with it before and otherwise I wouldnt be able to download new purchases either I guess.
    I really hope someone has a solution for me.

    I had the same problem. It appears that the servers chuck a hissy fit if you don't download your purchases in a timely fashion. I used the 'report a problem' feature in my iTunes account to contact customer support via email. They replied about 24 hours later, reset my download cue and the problem has now been resolved.

  • Folder Permissions for NAS Drive Affected After Upgrade

    Hello,
    I've seen similar questions asked all over the Internet, so I'm sorry if it's 'out there', but I can't seem to find a solution for the problem I have.
    I've only just upgraded my OS from 10.6.8 to 10.8.5 and have stumbled across a problem with folder permissions.
    I have a NAS drive connected to my router which has been serving it's purpose for the last couple of years, today I decided to upgrade to 10.8.5 - the install went through without a hitch. After the install, I attempted to connect to my NAS drive but I found I couldn't access any of the folders (all of them have the little red "No Access" icon in the bottom right corner), although files in the root folder can be viewed and opened, even though the root folder also has a "No Access" icon on the folder (see below, "true-replica").
    I have tried changing "File Sharing" permissions but I don't really know what I'm doing or where to look. I have no idea how the permissions have changed to "custom access" but is it possible to change the permissions back to "Read and Write" for this drive?

    I have an I Mac and on it is Aperture one. i have all my photos on it. When I bought Snow Leopard, I could no longer use Aperture because it says i can't open it with Snow Leopard. Do I have to buy a brand new Aperture 3 or can  i just download the most recent Aperture 3 download. In other words does the recent download allow me to start using it again, or do I have to go through buying all the downloads?

    You can just purchase Aperture 3. If you do this from the App Store it will cost you $80 US but this is still cheaper then buying the individual upgrades.

    I'd like to watch tv shows I've already purchased without downloading them to my laptop.  The only options I can find other than downloading deal with Apple TV and Airplay.  Seems like  there should be someway to watch them directly from the cloud.  If it makes any difference, if working with a PC running Win 7.

    If the song does not appear in your Purchased folder, then you can go back to the Store, select the song again, go select "Buy", and press Enter. iTunes knows you already purchased it, so it won't charge you again. It will, in fact, tell you that you have already purchased this item, and will ask you if you want to download it again for free....
    Just in case it is not to be found in the Purchased folder!

    If you are trying to reinstall Lion, you need to use Lion Recovery

    For that issue, quit the App Store if it's open. 
    Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
    Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    Click Go
    Move the NetworkInterfaces.plist file from the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch the App Store and try downloading MLion.
    *****   Your post is rather confusing. There's a difference between reinstalling Lion and downloading Mountain Lion.

  • Can't download purchased iPad apps

    I have searched these boards, Google, other boards, and have tried all of their suggestions but have had no resolution.  I have 11 iPad apps that cannot download in iTunes.  Everytime I open iTunes, they all try to download and fail instantly and I'm met with the error in the picture:
    I've shutdown my virus protection software, accelerators, etc...  I've tried the Parental Control trick, renaming the roaming folder to old and copying the preferences, command prompts, and I've been having this issue before and after updating iTunes.  It's just these though, I have been able to download new purchases since this and did two today with no problem!
    If there's any other method that I've missed that can be provided, it would be greatly appreciated!

    Although you can (and should) certainly trash anything in the Downloads folder, note that there are some considerations before doing so.
    First, some apps require uninstallers to remove them, and in many cases the uninstaller is stored on the original disk image that was downloaded. You can always re-download the software to get the uninstaller, but it's always possible that the uninstaller for a future version won't do the job properly. So if the disk image contains an uninstaller and you think you may want to uninstall that software at some point in the future, it may be wise to keep a copy of the disk image file.
    Secondly, some apps that you purchase may not be easily re-downloadable. In those cases, you will want to protect yourself against having to pay to re-purchase or re-download the app if something happens and you have to reinstall the app. (Like if you buy a new machine, or if your hard drive dies, or your system becomes corrupt requiring an "erase and install.") Keep a copy of the downloaded disk image file.
    In cases where you want to keep the installer, you will probably want to move it somewhere other than the Downloads folder. (Keeping the Downloads folder empty is a good idea.) You will also want to make sure it's backed up, like the rest of your system, so it's available in the future if/when you need it.

    I have downloaded books and music for two years. Now when I try to the songs do not download. When I press green buy book it goes blank and nothing downloads. My visa is fine and details current.     Ah yes school boy error there out of frustration and discontent..
    My issue is with music/apps/films etc not downloading from iTunes / App Store.
    They initially fail and message is displayed stating unable to download / purchase at this time, yet if I retry it says I've already purchased (?) or alternatively I go to the purchased section and there they are waiting with the cloud symbol..
    However some items get frozen in the download window and cannot be retried or deleted. Message appears stating to tap to retry, but even if you stole every bath and sink in the uk you'd still not have enough taps.
    I post here as the iTunes guys are useless in there 'help' and have only advised posting here or phoning apple, at my expense, to explain a problem that could be rectified by forwarding my original email to a techie. However the tech team apparently don't have an email address as they're from ye olde Middle Ages..!
    Anyways I digress.
    So I tried sync to pc, but instead of showing the file as ready to listen/use/view, the iCloud symbol shows and I'm back to square one as the item is unable to download..
    At frustration station waiting for a train from pain...
    All my software is up to date, and had all worked fine prior to the last big iOS update that resulted in all the changes in display and dismay.
