Can't drag and drop files onto desktop any more

I have always been able to drag/drop files and images onto the desktop from within the body of an email message or a web browser window. Now it won't let me do that any more and I have no idea what has changed. The cursor "holding" the image never changes into a + to allow for adding the file to the desktop. Instead, the file "bounces" back into the email body or the browser window. My only option is to do a right-click and "Save as" or click the "Save as" button in the email window.

Finder - Can't drag and drop files onto stacks on the desktop anymore.

This might sound like a strange question but in the past I was able to select a group of files in a window and drag that group to the desktop where they would stack upon one another creating a neat stack of all the files in one place. Now when I do this they drag onto the desktop and remain spread out all over the place. It's not terribly difficult to deal with except if I'm dragging say, 30 photos onto the deskop. Before they appeared stacked upon one another and I could simply drag one off the stack one by one. I am however experincing harsh symptoms of OCD because I can't figure out why. My co-worker's Mac is the same as mine (both running 10.8.2) and his files stack just fine.
I've done a fresh install after having no luck and it's till doing it.
This is really bumming me out. Any suggestions are very welcome. I've even booted into safe mode and it still won't stack drag and dropped files onto the desktop.

Can't drag and drop files onto Applications in Dock since upgrading to 10.6

Ever since my wife upgraded her iMac (2 GHz, 2 gigs) to 10.6, she can no longer drag and drop files onto certain applications in her dock to open the file. She has to go into the application and go to "open file" or whatever.
For example, if she has a Word doc on her desktop, she cannot drag it onto the Word icon in her dock.
Any advice?

You have many issues with your and your wife's machine(s). Everything you've posted works here. Reinstall Snow Leopard, repair permissions, and see if that fixes things.

As I often do, I went to drag four new files into a playlist in iTunes and suddenly they will not go in. I just get that circle with a diagonal line across indicating that this is not possible.
Lately iTunes has been giving me all sorts of problems such as not recognizing my iPhone or iTouch.

JollyGeri, after I installed the 10.5.3 version a few days ago I began to have the same problem. The first time i used iTunes after the new install is when the problem of not being able toI manipulate my music by dragging and dropping began. My computer is a Mac and it appears you are using Windows Vista so the solution to my problem will likely be different than yours. I'll just mention that on a mac there is a program called disk utility and with that we mac users can have it repair permissions. After a second attempt yesterday to repair permissions I was able to move music by dragging and dropping as I previously could. However, when I opened itunes today and tried, the same problem was back. I've used the disk utility program to repair permissions again but so far the problem persists. I hope someone is able to help you with your situation. If there is a similar type of program on your windows pc, perhaps by repairing the disk permissions you may be able to get your problem solved. This is very frustrating and I believe there is something in the new version of iTunes that has caused this because I have not installed any other upgreades, etc. since downloading and installing the itunes upgrade. Drag and Drop Files Onto EXE Icon

I was wondering if there is a way to have the user drag and drop files onto the .exe icon and this would initiate the program to do something with those files automatically?
For example: Some PDF convertor programs allow you to drag and drop documents, images, etc. directly onto the PDF convertor icon on your desktop and it will automatically convert them all to PDF's, without the user even having to open the program.
Can this same type of functionality be done with a Labview EXE file?

The only side note that I would include to others that are trying this is to make sure you have the "Pass All Command Line Arguments to Application" box checked in the "Advanced" section when you build the executable.

In iTunes I can't drag and drop podcasts onto my iPod anymore.

In iTunes I can't drag and drop podcasts onto my iPod anymore. I can still drag and drop songs onto my iPod and I can still drag and drop podcasts into other playlists. I've tried restarting my computer and my iPod and I've also checked for software updates for the iPod and iTunes. Help?

Update: I seem to have fixed the problem! I went to the "summary" section of my iPod after clicking on the device on the left side of iTunes. I checked the box that allowed me to "manually manage music and videos" and applied this option. The songs are syncing! And, yay, they're playing on my iPod now! Hopefully, this helps anyone else who might have this problem. There might be other issues, but this is working for now.

Can't drag and drop files into Indesign.

My ability to dragon and drop files into InDesign has stopped. I also cannot copy and paste. I have tried dropping previously used jpg's and PDFs as well as copying text from Acrobat, Chrome and Word. I reset the prefrences with control option command shift, but still no luck - I can't drag and drop files. Also, I cannot move files with my mouse in the program.

Nobody can help you without system information. Could be anything from graphics driver issues to a defective mouse to a busted operating system...

A lot of people are having this problem. Most commonly, they are using a Wacom tablet, and sometimes updating its driver helps. I don't have a Wacom, but still have the "can't drag" problem. Here are the workarounds I have found in the forums so far...
1. "gusto drag" -- slide the pointer across a song and click.
2. clicking with both left and right mouse buttons.
3. selecting items and do a "create playlist from selected". Then select the iPod and autofill from that playlist.

There are apps that will let you drag and drop files from the computer to the iPad. I have an app called File Manager Folder + that will let you drag and top files and also transfer them via WiFi. It's a pretty useful app actually.

Look in the Applications folder to see if iPhoto is still there. If it is drag it back to the Finder Sidebar. If it is no longer in the Applications folder post back, you can also look in the Trash it might still be there.

Out of nowhere, I can no longer drag and drop files on my desktop or within my Finder windows. I also cannot drag pictures from Safari onto my Desktop. I do not think there is a problem with my Trackpad as I can still move Safari windows and the like around the screen. I am using an Intel-based Mac Book Pro with OS X 10.5.8 Any help would be amazing and much appreciated. Thank you!

I'm having the same issue. I can no longer drag images from Safari (5.1.2) to Finder. I am on Lion (10.7.2). Has anybody found a fix for this? Having to right-click and "Save As..." makes me feel like I'm working in Windows XP, which is, needless to say, he11 of an unbearable kind.

I want to have two folders of Finder so that I can easily drag and drop files from one folder to another

I have been trying to reorganize my files. When in Manila I created a folder called Manila 2015 in Documents. I have the Mother folder Files 2015 with several subfolders like Finances, Personal, Tax etc. I want to have two finder folders simultaneously so that I can drag and drop files from the Manila 2015 folder to the various subfolders in the mother folder Files 2015. I am not able to open two windows of Finder on the desktop.

I have since found out that a new finder window can be opened witht the short cut Command+N.

Dragging and dropping files onto DVDs

I am new to MAC and want to copy some of my written files containing photos onto DVDs for storage.
On my old PC (not a MAC) I would simply format a new DVD and then drag and drop the files onto the disc - job done !
However I can't find out anywhere how to do this on my MAC and a long and probably expensive phone call to Apple Tech Help, left me frustrated and no nearer finding a solution as the Tech on the phone couldn't even tell me how to format a new DVD let alone how to get my documents onto the DVD ! I don't want to 'burn' the documents onto the DVD as I need to add to it on a regular basis I just want to get the files copied to the DVD. Can anyone out there tell me in simple terms how to do this please ?

The Mac supplied software doesn't support multiple writes to optical media.
I though perhaps you could do this with Roxio's Toast, but their support site says: "As such, Toast does not allow burning multi-session DVDS."

You don't "Format' a data DVD - you simply drag and drop files on the disc logo on your destop.

Can't drag and drop files into Attachments while in Administrator mode

I can drag and drop files into attachment easily when I'm not in Administrator mode. But I need to be in Administrator mode at work and therefore for some reason I cannot drag and drop files into attachments; I'm forced to manually search and select particular files for attaching, which significantly slows my day-to-day work.
Is it a bug?
I have the up-to-date version of Thunderbird and I use MS Windows 7 Ultimate.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
