Can't drag & drop files into folders

So heart-attack was just adverted, however I need to figure out what's going on.
My work comp just got upgraded to Mountain Lion along with a few coworkers (who for whatever reason aren't experiencing this same issue). Basically, if I have a folder (folder 1) and inside it is some PSD's sitting loose and another folder (call it folder 2) - when I try and drag those PSDs into 'folder 2', they disapear from 'folder 1' (which is expected), but when I go to 'folder 2', the PSDs aren't there. Searching for the file name in finder came up with nothing, trying to open it from 'recently open' in Photoshop didn't do anything. Eventually I found the missing files on my desktop (not sure why it didn't show up in the Finder search). Did a test and sure enough, every time I try to drag and drop files into a folder (regardless what folder it is), everything gets dumped on my desktop.
Help?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Drag and drop files into folders in iPad reader? or iTunes?

is it possible to drag and drop files into folders in iPad reader? or iTunes?  It is very clunkey to have to click each separate file to instruct it to move to the folder.  Better still, can I just sync an existing folder on my hard drive so the pdf's inside always remain up to date on my iPad?

There is no way to drag and drop in Reader on an iPad.
There is no way to sync PDFs in a folder on your hard drive to those inside of Reader.
There are readers (which are NOT free) which let you do some of these things and have more capabilities. You might check out PDF Expert from Readdle which costs $9.99 US.

  • I can't drag/drop files!! HELP :( :(

I can't drag/drop files from one place to another, like across my desktop,i have to cut/copy paste them into another location.
It randomly change as before i could drag/ drop files, etc

OS X will move the file if you hold the command key while you drag and drop.
What happens if duplicate files are found during the move drag and drop. If you release the command key to answer the dialog box that appears, the file will be copied but not moved. If you continue to hold the command key as you click the Replace button, the move action will be completed.
To move files in Finder first press Command+C to copy the selected files, then press Command+Option+V to move the copied files to the current folder.

  • Urgent Q - Can't drop files into folders

Hello all. I have an urgent problem that has me stopped in my
tracks. Suddenly I can't drag a file in RoboHelp (we use Flash Help
layout) from one folder to another. We don't use source control or
anything "exotic". The only odd thing I have done recently is to
generate a printed doc layout for a job aid for some of our
customers from the content we have elsewhere.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum.
Has the PC been rebooted since this started?
Is it the same if you create a new project with a few folders
and files or if you open one of the supplied projects?

  • Can't drag motion files into Compressor anymore

I used to be able to drag Motion files into the batch window in Compressor, and now I can't. I've tried trashing preferences - no effect. It's frustrating because loss of this ability doesn't coincide with any update, so I'm not sure what it could be. Does anyone with more compressor experience than me have any ideas?

Somehow, when I tried to drag from the finder, I didn't always get the right song!  But if I double clicked that song in the finder, the right song was played by iTunes, even though the wrong song showed up in Garage Band.  Dragging to and from the desktop worked fine, and I just dragged it from the desktop to the trash after I worked on it in Garage Band for editing and "sharing" back into iTunes.

  • Can't drag video files into library - Please help!

Just got my iPod 30G video, and while I can drag mp3 files into the Library without any problems, when I try to do the same for video files (.avi and .wmv files), nothing happens. I don't get any error messages, but the files just don't appear in the Library. What am I doing wrong?

You must convert the videos to MP4. To do this, you must download a video converter. I got mine from Videora. Just google that name and download their full program. You will then need to convert the videos with the program and drag them to iTunes.

  • Can't drag local files into a playlist

I like to drag local MP3s into a playlist.  I can't do that anymore.   I can see them in my Local Files and then drag them.. but it was so much easier to drag and drop the ones I want from my finder window.  Anybody else?

I've reverted to an old Spotify version - http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2015-03/12/how-to-downgrade-spotify - until they fix this and various other issues introduced with this update (although note - I'm having problems getting this downgrading to work on OSX).  All in all a very unfortunate turn of events, as picking such an app like Spotify to use to entirely manage one's music, create all one's playlists in it, etc, requires a huge amount trust in the system (since all the playlists one creates etc are somewhat stuck in that system), and this update breaks-down that trust by showing Spotify's willingness to break all kinds of features which many users depend on. I imagine I'll stick on the old version a while, then see if things have improved, and if not I'll have to pick an alternate solution, hopefully with a company that actually cares a little more about its users. These are by no means the first issues Spotify has created or failed to resolve regarding local file support (syncing them to devices has always been painful and hasn't fully worked for all my playlists for years despite a few fresh installs for example - compare this to google music which has cloud support for your own music), among other things, but definitely for me this was the straw that's broken the camel's back.

  • No "Ringtones" tab and can't drag & drop ringtones into iTunes

I have an iPhone4 running OS4.3, using iTunes 10.2 on a Windows Vista PC. I used an iPhone app to create custom ringtones, and have followed the app's instructions to save the ringtones to my PC and then copy into iTunes. Two problems:
    1) The instructions say to drag & drop the .m4r files into iTunes. I've seen this mentioned in other posts on this topic. When I try to do this, the files won't "drop". I see the "no" symbol (circle with line) when I hover over my music library.
    2) The instructions say to click on my iPhone in iTunes, and then on the "Ringtones" tab along the top of the screen. I don't have a Ringtones tab. There's also no reference to Ringtones in the left navigation pane.
    How do I correct this?
    Thanks

!!! JUST DOWNGRADE YOUR ITUNES VERSION, AND USE THE OLDER ONE - THAT'S ALL. SORRY FOR ALL-CAPITAL LETTERS AND EXCLAMATION MARKS, - IT IS JUST OUT OF EXCITEMENT, AFTER HOURS OF SEARCHING AND THINKING ABOUT A SOLUTION !!!
    Shalom all,
Our frustration and pain is over, for sure… With some help and hints from this forum I’ve found a precise solution to the above mentioned can’t-get-the-goddamned-ringtones-tab-to-appear-in-my-iTunes problem.
Now let me try and get up to the point:
The 10.5.2 version of iTune is worthless (at least, it’s 64-bit modification, which I’ve been using up to this point). By reading a few comments on your forum, I’ve quickly decided to try and downgrade to 10.4.1.10 version (seems to me, 64-bit), which can be downloaded from apple.com site with just a little extra-search.
By the way, I do have Windows 7 64-bit OS on my PC, and “Apple” warns that one MUST use 64-bit installation in my case…
One must uninstall previously installed 10.5.2 (if there used to be one, of course). In such a case, please, also uninstall a “Bonjour” program by “Apple” (don’t know what’s that, but you will not be able proceed any further with, as it was said in my case, higher version of “Bonjour” left behind).
After uninstalling those two abovementioned things, I have installed iTunes 10.4.1.10 , even without being asked for reboot by the end of the installation. But, alas, when I tried running iTunes, it failed with the complain about a “iTunes Library.itl” file (found in C:\Users\<My_User>\Music\iTunes). I’ve just renamed the file (could’ve been removed as well, of course) and restarted the iTunes. This time everything went smooth.
The rest of the story, I assume, you can imagine much better than me. Go to Edit->Preferences and tick “Ringtones”. After connecting the iPhone (well, probably one more iTunes restart will be required in this case, - not sure about that), we will get the “Ringtones” tab set also under the iPhone definition (see “DEVICES” in iTunes).
Next, create an .m4a file out of your favorite ringtone, move it to the Desktop, change the extension to a4r, add it back (drug-and-drop) to “Ringtones” tab at the iTunes LIBRARY. Then make some blessing, take a deep breath and… that’s pretty much done. One important thing not to forget before sync: click on your phone (under iTune’s DEVICES), and click on “Ringtones”, located right under the gorgeous :-) apple picture in the top middle of the iTunes window. Mark “Sync Ringtones” and “All Ringtones” (?) there, of course…
BTW, no need whatsoever to register your phone, - you can just postpone the registration...
Phew… Let’s hope I haven’t forget anything. Anyhow, the idea was to get rid of iTunes 10.5.2 as soon as possible, uninstall it together with “Bonjour” (say good bye to “Bonjour”  ), then install a good old iTunes 10.4.1.10, get over few problems and… The rest of the procedure - you know it by heart, by far better than me…
I’ve been struggling with the problem for less than a day (thanks to all of you, pals), but I can imagine there are still some poor pal chaps around…
Let us help them… Very unfortunately, English is not my mother tongue, as you can see… I wish, it would be different, but G-d decided other way… Please, (1) make some corrections and clarifications to this notes (I could've made it better, but in a crunch now, really), and also, (2) try spreading it among as many guys as possible… If you can pass this solution to “Apple” tech support, - it should be taken to consideration...
And I'll be waiting now for a generous job offer from that great company... :-)
Let me just wish you all a very Happy New Year...
Thank you all, dear friends, and do enjoy the best of your own FREE ringtones……
P.S.: iTunes 10.4.1 (64-bit) can be found here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1427 , at the bottom of the page...

  • I can't drag .mov files into an iMessage as I could earlier

Used to, I could drag a movie file into iMessage and send it to my friends quite easily. It was the most convenient way to send content and raw footage to schoolmates for projects and what not, but now when I do this it doesn't add any footage, but instead a blank line?  I really need to be able to send videos this way as my class almost requires us to share content.

I've seen where you've helped a lot of people and hopefully you can help me as I'm stumped. I have a Canon Vixia HFS200 and having trouble getting some movie clips to import from SD card. In the past, if a 'still' pic is taken on the same card, iMovie won't recognize anything as being importable. If I deleted the photos, I was able to import without a problem but this time, there are no stills on the card but still doesn't recognize anything importable, even though there are 140 or so .MTS files.
I've tried a conversion software that I was able to view them but had the company logo over the top. I wasn't sure if there was a way to manually or 'force' them to import? Appreciate any suggestions.

  • Can't Drag & Drop Songs into Playlists

I am astounded that this appears to be such a wide spread issue and there do not seem to be any useful responses to the issue. I have always been able to drag music from my iTunes library into playlists I have already created. Now the playlists I previously created (they were not created as genius playlists) all have a funny "gear wheel" shaped symbol next to them and will not accept anything dragged from the library. If I create a new playlist (which now shows a "purchased music" symbol) and give it the name of one of the already created playlists, I can drag library music into it, but I don't want to have to recreate every playlist and manually re-drag every song into the playlists. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks

I have about 50 playlists that I created as playlists and have always been able to add songs to as I purchased them. The lists were originally created as regular playlists. Then, one day I opened up iTunes and all the existing playlists I had created as playlists, and has always added songs to, had the "gear" symbols and acted like genius playlists. How can I change them back and why did this happen...any ideas?

  • Can't drag text files into my iPod

I've seen that usualy below the iPod icon on the left side of the window of itunes, it use to appear "90's" "most popular music", something like that (some sort of playlists), but now it only appearas the little iPod image with nothing below (unless I create a Playlist). So there's nowhere I can drag my text files (Help says I should drag them into the "Notes" folder, but id doesn't appear there!)
    What can I do??

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First you have to enable your iPod for disk use. Go into Edit-->preferences and hit the iPod tab. Then check enable disk use. Click ok.
Now go into My Computer and find the drive representing the iPod. Open that. This is where the notes folder is.

  • Can I Drag & Drop music into player w/1.11 firmware? (mic

Do I need to get the 2.20 version to do this or can . do this?
What drawbacks (aside from taking up more memory) does 2.20 have?Message Edited by ebsameer on 0-06-2005 04:55 AM

You do need V. 2.xx firmware in order to drag and drop without using external drivers or software (though you do need to have Windows Media Player 0 installed on your computer).Message Edited by Artemesia on 0-06-2005 08:3 AM

  • Can't drag music files into new shuffle. Pls? Thx.

    Good Morning.
Using a computer (G4 MDD) with an iPod mini on it already.
Created a new user account named ipod.
Switched to that user account, installed/configured new iPod Shuffle named it
Nicks and tried to drag music over to the main iTunes page to no avail. (Keeps snapping back)
See both ipod mini and Ipod shuffle in finder while under "Nicks" login account.
    Any advice please?
    thanks
    Tom

I'm not sure you have to create a new user account, but you do have to give the Shuffle a different name than your other iPod. If you plan to share the same Library with the two devices (which I do with a Shuffle and a 30G 3G) you don't need the separate accounts.
Do you really have OS 9.2.x or is the software here having problems with the profiles?

  • Unable to double-click or drag/drop files to open.

I'm running Photoshop CC 64 on a Windows 7 64 machine and am only able to open files in Photoshop by going to File->Open. Double-clicking from Explorer doesn't work and i can not drag/drop files into the open application window or taskbar icon. Right clicking on files and selecting "Open with" also doesn't work.
I checked file associations and made sure to choose CC 64. If I right click on the shortcut and choose "Run As Administrator" which I have to do in order to get files to open between Lightroom and Photoshop (both need to be Run As Administrator), I'm still unable to open from Windows Explorer. However, if I check the box to "Run this program as administrator" in the shortcut's Compatibility tab, I can double-click to open from Explorer but am prompted with a UAC warning every time. Dragging/dropping into the open app still doesn't work.
Opening between Bridge and PS works as expected so long as both programs are "Run As Administrator"
Been searching the forums here and seen suggestions of similar but not the same issue, at least not that I've found.
    Anyone else experiencing? Suggested remedies?

This is an OS permission problem.  Make sure you have ownership of the HD.  Do a web search on how to check.  External HD can be a problem for permission.
