Can't drag out anymore folder in finder lateral bar ? Why ?

Hi.
Even if I repair the permission of my computer, I cannot anymore drag out folder alias that I put into the lateral bar of the finder. Why ? How can I debug this ?
Usually when you drag an alias folder out of the lateral bar, there is a white cloud showing. Doesn't work anymore !
Thanks.

Ok that was simple ! :-/
Could have found that on my own. lol
Thanks man.

  • Can't drag out some pics

I'm trying to get a few pics out into a folder on my desktop. I'm dragging them out and all's going well, but all of a sudden, there are a few random pics that won't go out. When I try to drag them out, I get the little circle with a line through it next to my icon. Why on earth would there be some images in my iPhoto that I can't drag out of iPhoto???
    Thanks,
    Dan P.

When I select "Show File" it takes me to the modified folder for that event, but the file is NOT there. When I select "Show Original" it takes me to the actual file in the originals folder.
It appears that a LOT of my modified files (modified only because of the camera's auto rotation I believe, not due to anything I did) are gone.
I tried choosing "Revert to Original", but that appears to have no effect, since after doing so, the menu still has the options "Show File" and "Show Original". I tried simply copying the original over to the modified folder and that appears to work, but have been told I should never manually move files around in those folders.
This is VERY frustrating, I don't know what to do. I just tried to export a picasa web album, and it won't let me because it's looking for modified files that aren't there.
    Any further input appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dan P.

  • Really stupid that you can't drag and drop photos from Finder into Events

There is no way in iPhoto to do what I want and need to to, to wit, drag and drop photos from the Finder into existing iPhoto Events.
It really doesn't make sense that you can't do this. First of all, calling these groups Events to begin with is not smart; in my case, a group of photos in a folder on the Finder is rarely all from one photo session or so-called "event"--- instead of Events they should just be called Groups or something, and you should be able to drop individual photos into them. I have thousands of family photos that were accumulated on my hard drives over the years, some scanned in from film negatives, slides, or prints, others from digital cameras, and when I have changed Macs and hard drives over the years, every time a folder of photos was moved from an old hard drive to a new one, or regrouped into various folders, the photos seem to have acquired new dates of origin, etc.
Anyway, what I mean is, if Events are all time based, then somebody like me who has thousands of photos with all sorts of dates of origin, mostly unrelated to the date that the photo was actually shot, is screwed. I have old photos with new dates of origin and other mismatches between photos and the dates when they were actually shot or scanned.
My gripe is, again, that when I find photos on my hard drives that belong in certain iPhoto Events that have already been created, I cannot just drag these photos from the Finder and drop them into the Events they belong in. Instead, the stupid program creates a new Event from each photo I try to drop into an existing Event. That means I have to chase these new photos all over the place inside of iPhoto, trying to figure out where each new photo (now called an "Event") has ended up, so that I can drag and merge it into the Event I wanted it to go into in the first place. A real pain in the neck. It simply takes too long to do this for each photo added.
What this means is that iPhoto is not going to be a practical way to organize for a person like me until Apple makes it possible to simply drop any photo from the Finder into an existing Event. There should be an option to allow that. I'm really surprised there is not one. <edited out by Hosts>
    Tom

Tom, iPhoto will not overwrite photos with the same name. I have plenty of photos with the same name in the same event. Each photo most likely has an internal handler that manages the photo, and not just the name of the file.
I agree with you that this is sub-optimal, and (IMO) I think what happened is iPhoto 6 had rolls, and they came up with a really cool interface for mousing over those rolls, and decided it was more consumer friendly (and because film is a thing of the past) to call them events, rather than rolls. I think it was worth a shot, but they just slightly missed.
Right now in iPhoto08, any serious organization is done in folders and albums. Personally, I think they need to combine the two concepts -- the great "mouse over" view of events with the organization abilities of folders and albums. I'd like an albums view where I can mouse over the albums. Actually, Aperture 2's interface for organization is more functional than iPhoto, so I am hoping some of that benefit creeps into the next iPhoto release.
What I do is: I use events for high level grouping (like Winter 2007) and I organize folders and albums to break that down further ("trip to Montreal" "Christmas" etc.). But I do it backwards. I fill albums first, then I organize events.
When I drag in pictures to iPhoto, first I make the target album in iPhoto that I want to populate, then I drag the photo directly to that album (not to events). iPhoto automatically puts the photo into the album I created and also into a new event. Later, I go into events, right-click on this new event to "open event in separate window" then I move around the events view, to drop in the pictures from the "import" event I just created. If I move all the pictures into other events, iPhoto automatically deletes the event I just emptied. You could skip the event organization all together if you wanted to, but you'd lose the cool mouse-over feature, which can be handy.
One nice thing about having events AND albums is you can have the photo just once in iPhoto, in an event, but then have the photo appear in as many albums as you want (as well as projects and web galleries) all while only having one photo on your hard drive. So, there are benefits to events, but I think iPhoto is missing just a couple little bits of organizational ability to make it perfect. (and yes, I've submitted this all to Apple as feature requests)
Just in case you don't know -- events don't have any hierarchy. That is, you can't nest events. But you can have folders with subfolders, and any folder can contain albums. Albums cannot have sub-albums, and folders don't hold photos. Only albums hold photos, and folders (or sub-folders) hold albums. Try create some folders and albums and you'll get the hang of it. One other issue that Apple needs to address. When you create a new folder or album, it doesn't put it right where you want it, but rather puts it at the bottom of the list, so you have to drag it up to where you want it. Try it out, and you'll see what I mean, then submit it as a feature request to improve that.
I agree it's not perfect, but it's not too bad once you get used to it. And the benefits of working with the rest of the features of iPhoto is worth it. I'm just really hoping they do a few tweaks on the next release. They are near greatness here. They could just use a little nudge on the last bits. (in my opinion of course. Others may disagree, but I've talked to enough people who have the same issues you are having to know we are not alone on this).

  • Mac: can I drag and drop files from Finder into Files panel

I am relatively new to Mac so forgive me if this is obvious.
I just switched from Windows to Mac and now something I used to
know how to do in Windows I can't figure out how to do on Mac. In
Windows I used to open an Explorer window over Dreamweaver, select
some files, and drap and drop them into the Files panel in
Dreamweaver, and they would be sucked in.
Now on the Mac whenever I select the Finder window to select
files to drag and drop, the Dreamweaver panels disappear
completely, rather than just move beneath the Finder window. So
when I'm ready to drag and drop there's no Dreamweaver to drop
into. I see that if I put focus on Dreamweaver, then Finder won't
disappear, and I can click on Finder to begin a drag without
Dreamweaver disappearing but then it is unresponsive to a drop.
In short, I can't seem to drag and drop files from Finder
into Dreamweaver on the Mac. Am I missing something? I'm using
Dreamweaver CS3 on Leopard if that makes any difference.
    Thanks,
    Jan

I don't believe you can do this on the Mac platform. The only
other thing you could try is to use Spaces and have the Finder open
in one Space and then drag it over to Dreamweaver in another space.
Outside of that I can't think of how this would work.

  • Can't drag out the bottom right corner of image to resize

Hi, I'm running PS CS3 on Mac iBook with 10.5.8
I've been using this setup for years & have always been able to drag out the right bottom corner to increase the grey space round an image so i can transform better or what ever. But now when I try to drag out that corner the image window flinches slightly & a line appears around the image which disapears when I let go.
Also when I try to expand the layers palette down by dragging it's lower right cornes so I can see more layers nothing happens, there is no stripey corner marks on that corner & when i try click & try to drag nothing happens.
Thanks for any suggestions on how to be able to resize my windows again.

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.

Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Can't Drag in MIDI files from Finder

    HI,
I can't drag in MIDI files from the Finder in GB. I used to be able to do this easily a month or so ago.
HELP says that I am doing it correctly. Anyone else have this problem?

Great suggestion. That worked great. Weird thing is that previous versions of GB allowed me to drag in the very same MIDI files w/o the QT round trip. Perhaps a different version of the OS or QT has changed this. Well, thanks for the help.

Check, if you have the "Primary Only" option enabled. Then keywords will only be applied to the "Primary Image":
See:                  Keywords or ratings are applied only to one of the selected images - why?
Uncheck the little square button with the "1".

  • Can you drag and drop folder names into Photos like iPhoto?

I use to be able to drag folder of pictures into the sidebar of iPhoto and it would import the photos and put them in a folder with the exact name as the folder on my desktop. Photos does not seem to have th same feature. Does anyone know if this should be working?

No because there are no Events in Photos.  A folder of images can be added to an album already in Photos.  But the photos will be located in the Moments that represent the date each photo was taken.
If you import a folder into Photos you can go to the Last Import smart album, select all of the photos there and create a new album with them in it.
Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.
When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.
Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos and any missing features you'd like to see restored via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • Recovering clips from Trash - can't drag out

I recorded some clips using the built in camera, hadn't saved the project and it shut down on me. I reopened the project, and they were all in the trash. But I can't seem to get them out of the trash... can any one help or should I just empty the trash and start over?

Yeah I am having this issue today too. Not able to copy / paste or drag and drop anything - it's almost as if the file is suddenly protected and not letting me make changes.
I am scouring the HD board here to see if the question's already been answered.
I too am using Imovie HD on the MacBook.

  • Cannot change iCloud ID in iOS8 - Can't Sign Out without turning off Find My iPad - which needs the password for the old iCloud ID

I have read the older responses to questions re how to change the iCloud account from an old ID/email address (OLD ID) - to a new ID/email address (CURRENT ID).  They all say go to Settings>iCloud - and Delete the iCloud account.  In iOS 8 - there is no Delete - but there is a Sign Out.  BUT - when I choose the Sign Out it shows a pop-up with the OLD iCloud ID - saying I must first sign IN to iCloud and enter a Password Required to turn off the Find My iPad feature.
I have tried using the password I remember as being correct for the OLD iCloud ID.  Doesn't work.
I have tried using the password for the CURRENT ID - even though the pop-up has the OLD ID displayed.  Doesn't work.
I'm out of ideas - except Reset??
    Should I Reset All Settings?

I finally found a work-around in another thread on this Using iPad community.  Basically, I had to first make sure that the Messages and Facetime were associated with the CURRENT/NEW ID.  (I could do this by simply erasing the OLD ID and typing in the new - in General>Messages and General>Facetime.  I then used by PC to change my Apple ID back to the OLD ID/EMAIL - but leave the new password alone.
I then went back to Settings>iCloud - clicked on Sign Out.  When it asked me to log on -- with the OLD ID/EMAIL -- to turn off the Find My Phone - I did so using the Password that was originally used with the CURRENT/NEW ID.  This worked.  So I finally was able to close out of the iCloud account that used the OLD ID/EMAIL.
I then went back on my PC to change my Apple ID back to the CURRENT/NEW ID/EMAIL.
I then went back to the iPad Settings>iCloud - and signed on using the CURRENT/NEW ID/EMAIL.
    So everything is OK now.
    WHEW!!!
Not sure why this has to be so difficult.  But thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • How can I create a new folder in de tool bar?

I have several bookmarks of news papers and magazines located in the tool bar. Since they take space I need for other bookmarks, I need to place them in a folder which will also be located in the tool bar. How can do to achieve that?...I did it once but I forgot how I did it.

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

  • How can I have ONE bookmark folder and no tool bar/option, but alphabetized?

i don't want bookmark tool bar, all I want is "show all bookmarks" alphabetized

Usually if you choose Show All Bookmarks, Firefox opens a separate window called the Library. Is that what you meant?
As far as I remember, Firefox doesn't have a setting to keep your bookmarks alphabetical as you add them, but you can alphabetize them in the Library dialog. In the left column, right-click Bookmarks Menu, then Sort by Name.
And you can close the Bookmarks Toolbar. Right-click a blank area of the tab bar (or the new tab "+" button on that bar) and "uncheck" Bookmarks Toolbar.
To access your bookmarks without the toolbar, you can use any of the following:
    * Bookmarks menu on the classic menu bar (Alt+b) or on the compact menu behind the orange Firefox button
    * Bookmarks button (drop-down list) on a toolbar ''(if the classic menu bar is not displayed)''
    * Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+b)
    Does that help?
