  • Can't drag songs from library to playlist

I've created many playlists over the last year and have a fair amount of experience in doing so. However, today I imported some music from several CDs and tried to create a new playlist. For some reason it will not allow me to drag any song to a new or existing playlist. What have I done?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you sure it is a normal playlist and not a smart playlist? You can't manually add songs to a smart playlist, since its contents is determined by the parameters you set for it. In iTunes, standard playlists have a music note icon, and smart playlists have a small gear icon.

Can't copy a song from library into playlist. Screen message says "song can't be found." I know it's there, how do I access it?.

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file.   This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings.  Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus.   That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.
Good luck!  The tech support person at Apple is requesting that a knowlege-base article be written about this.

Make sure that you have set iTunes to "manage songs manually" - otherwise, all synchronization is automatic and you cannot drag songs to the iPod.
Of course, the automatic synchronization works fine if that is what you want/need (that is what I use, works fine)

  • I can't drag and drop songs from library to playlists

Unable to drag and drop songs from library into playlists, however I can drop them above or below playlists. That is no help in editing playlists! Seems to be after last iTunes up date.
    Tkank you

My mistake totally!!! I confused a new playlist folder with a new playlist.
Just wanted to pass that along.

  • Here's the exact scenario with it: 1) Ipod connected successfully to iTunes. 2) Drag song from Library(in AAC format) to My Ipod. 3) Song plays successfully in iTunes. BTW: This is one of the songs from my cd. Not bought. 4) Eject Ipod. 5) Find song in

Here's the exact scenario with it:
    1) Ipod connected successfully to iTunes.
    2) Drag song from Library(in AAC format) to My Ipod.
    3) Song plays successfully in iTunes.
BTW: This is one of the songs from my cd. Not bought.
    4) Eject Ipod.
    5) Find song in Ipod and press play.
    6) Display for song and time appear.
    7) About 1/3 of a second of the song plays, then it cuts out and restarts itself. (boots me back to apple logo)

Nope - and it was set to not look for them.
The final clue came when I tried hooking the drive directly to the computer, instead of to the airdisk. iTunes still hung. Then I disconnected the drive and tried to run it, and iTunes came up right away - but with an ! next to each song. Clearly it was trying to find/touch every file in the library on first startup.
I didn't try plugging in the drive and leaving the hanging iTunes running for more than a few minutes, so it's possible that it would have recovered and launched. But after removing the XML file, restoring the library to my pre-7.7 version, I could hear it accessing the directly attached drive (and see it in disk activity in the monitor) for a few minutes (less than I'd left the hanging one trying), before it came up.
    Conclusion:
    1) 7.7 is definitely trying to touch/see all the files in the library on first launch (proved by the ! when they are missing).
    2) Disconnecting/interrupting the touch/see MAY have corrupted something (can't prove it).
    3) Since touching 10,000 files takes a LONG time even at 802.11n speeds (let alone b or g), it's worth the hassle to plug the drive in directly for the first time.
    4) Patience is a virtue

  • Can't drag songs from itunes onto anything (desktop, flash drive, etc.)

    This is weird.
All of a sudden, I can't drag songs from itunes onto the desktop, any folder on my hard drive, my flash drive, or my spare hard drive. On a health computer, if you drag a large number of files, first they land as white icons and they fill in as they get transferred. With my computer, the white icons stick around for a few second and then disappear. The first time I try, I can transfer 1-10 files successfully. After that it stops working. Here is what I've done.
1] Upgraded my system from 10.3.X to 10.4.5
    2] I upgraded itunes from 7.0 to 7.3.1
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

Since I can not edit my own post I'll have to reply to myself... Sorry for the "spam" on the forums.
I DID find something out (while playing with this some more)...
Try and copy as many songs as you can with UNIQUE titles. I've noticed that when you drag the songs in iTunes to the desktop (or a folder) the file it creates/copies is named like so: "songtitle.mp3."
Apparently the Finder and iTunes don't play well together [enough] to prevent several files of the same name from appearing - in most OS's I've played with (Linux and Windows, in addition to other Apple & Mac OS's over the years) there's a mechanism for handling this... Windows just adds a number to the end the of the second (and all future occurring) file(s) of the same name - as does most Linux builds I've used... Apparently the Finder in OS X just doesn't do anything - at all - when it discovers this "name error."
What I had to do (I was copying my Christmas music - do you know how many "Jingle Bells.mp3" files you can have?!) was make many folders or manually rename EACH FILE one by one so that others could be copied in the same place since the file name would always be JUST THE SONG NAME and the extension (and I do tend to keep my files in higher bitrate MP3 format for easier shuffling from OS to OS as I tend to use (in case you've not noticed) many different ones at any given time).
So, try avoiding any songs with the same title (or altering the title in iTunes somehow), or make separate folders to keep the same song name files from being created in the same place; and see if that doesn't clear this problem up for you - it did for me. ^_^
    And sorry for being so "wordy" on this post. ^_^;

  • TS2776 I can't drag songs from my iTunes Library to create a Playlist: I get a 'cancelled circle' icon over the song title as I try to drag it.

When I try to drag songs from my iTunes Library to create a playlist, nothing happens. The title appears to move but it has a 'cancelled circle' icon superimposed on it and nothing happens to the Playlist. It almost looks as if the Playlist is 'greyed out'??

I have had this as well, since updating itunes and it is a normal playlist. I have been able to add 2 but all the others I have tried come up with the cancelled circle and it is very frustrating as I used to be able to create playlists and drag whatever I wanted into them!

  • Can't drag songs from iTunes library to my iPhone.  Nothing has changed.

I recently purchased some songs from iTunes and added some songs from cd's to my library.  At the time, I was able to copy (drag/drop) some of them to my husband's iphone.  I am now trying to copy them to mine and am not able to.  I've never had a problem with this before.  This is not the original computer that i set up iTunes on...that one was a pc, and it died.  This one is a Mac.  I did have our iphones "synced" with the Mac in the Apple store.  I have tried checking the "Manually manage music and videos" button, but get this message:  The iPhone “Janice816's iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?".  I don't want to attempt anything like this for fear of deleting everything.  My iTunes and iPhone have the most current software, also.  Is there an easy answer to this, or does it sound like I'll have to take everything back in for help?  Thanks very much.

Iphone will sync or manually manage with one and only one computer at a time.
Syncing or manually managing to another will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new computer.

  • New Mac can't transfer songs from library to iPhone or iPods

I just bought a new Mac Mini because my iBook died. My iTunes library is stored on an external hard drive. I can see the library in iTunes, but when I try to move them to my iPhone or iPods I get an error message. It states that the new computer must be authorized. I do the authorization process and it tells me that this is computer of 2 of the 5 that I can authorize to play music and it is authorized. But, I can play the songs thru iTunes, but can't transfer them to any other devices.
The majority of the music in my library wasn't purchased thru iTunes. It is music ripped from purchased CD's to the hard drive and then imported into my library. I have had no problems for the last 5 years with this library on the laptop.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong, or suggestions on how to solve the problem?
Thank you in advance for any help.

IS your ipod in Automatic mode or Manual.. Meaning if it is in manual mode you must transfer the songs manually. TO change - With ipod connected go to edit - preferences - ipod from that you ca select whether you wat automatic "yes" or manual

  • Can't delete songs from library on iTunes9 Windows

I follow the directions for deleting songs from the library but nothing happens when I press delete button. I highlight the song and press delete but don't get the next option of whether to delete it from the computer or not. Nothing happens. Any tips?

"Library" is highlighted? I can't highlight "LIBRARY" on my panel on my left side. The first thing I can select is "Music":
The reason I belabor this point, is that if you're looking at your main collection of music from the iTunes app, hitting the delete button (or right-clicking and select "Delete") should work fine. But if you're working with a smart playlist, you cannot just delete, because presence in the playlist is controlled by rules, not by adding or deleting files from the playlist. If you really want to delete from not only the smart playlist, but the entire iTunes library (and your disk), you can shift-delete and that can delete something in a smart playlist from your entire library.

  • Moving songs from library to playlist in iPhone

Hi all, I'm trying to move songs from my library to a playlist in my iPhone using iTunes in my Mac. Used to be able to just click and drag, but that doesn't seem to work. Help?

Update your Mac OS. Apple menu > Software Update (or update your signature whioch shows Mac OS X 10.4.3).
I highly suggest you create the playlist in iTunes, edit the playlist in iTunes then drag the playlist to teh iphone.
Don't create it on the iPhone using iTunes.
Which version of iTunes are you using?
You have to check Manually manage Music & Videos on the Summary page.
