Can't drag songs

Using the latest iTunes download I can't drag and drop songs to new playlist folders as I have done in past editions of iTunes.  So after creating a new playlist folder I went to Music and copied and pasted those songs in the new playlist folder.  Then when I opened iTunes the next time the playlist was there but empty.  Where did the songs go and why won't they stay where I pasted them?  Not sure I like the new version of iTunes.

I have the same problem. I can make a new playlist but when I try to drag songs into it, it doesn't work.
I re-started my iMac and was able to drag one song to the playlist and then couldn't drag anymore.
Any ideas?

  • Can't drag songs into playlist

I can't drag songs from my library into one of my playlists. Other playlists are fine - it is just the one that won't take songs. Is there a limit for the number of songs in a playlist?

What sort of playlist is it? If it's a smart playlist then it gets it's content from the rules that have been set for it, for example recently added. You won't be able to drag to a playlist like this just a normal one. The icon for an normal playlist that you can drag to will have a musical note on it, a smart playlist has an icon that looks like a little gear wheel.

  • ITunes 10.4 can't drag songs into playlists

There is one glaring difference in the new iTunes 10.4 (80). I can't drag songs from one playlist to another. It doesn't matter whether the source is a smart playlist or a regular dumb one, or even the main music library.
smart playlist or dumb playlist or even the main music library) into other (dumb) playlist.
As a workaround, I can copy (cmd-c) and paste (cmd-v), but this is ... umm ... sub-optimal, because you have to change playlists to do it. Then when you go back to the first folder, any search you might have used before is now gone.
Is there any way to bring back drag and drop? Some weird .plist hack or anything?

Well. My first efforts to search for a solution were poorly executed, because I tried again and found lots of answers.
The problem appears to be using a Wacom driver. See the discussion here and (same thread) here and here. No idea when that will be fixed. I use a 8 or 9 year old Graphire, and drivers have been a problem for most of those. Sigh.
But this experience also made me learn that you can right click to add selections to a playlist.
I even learned how that first column works, which I never knew before.

  • Can't drag songs from itunes onto anything (desktop, flash drive, etc.)

    This is weird.
All of a sudden, I can't drag songs from itunes onto the desktop, any folder on my hard drive, my flash drive, or my spare hard drive. On a health computer, if you drag a large number of files, first they land as white icons and they fill in as they get transferred. With my computer, the white icons stick around for a few second and then disappear. The first time I try, I can transfer 1-10 files successfully. After that it stops working. Here is what I've done.
1] Upgraded my system from 10.3.X to 10.4.5
    2] I upgraded itunes from 7.0 to 7.3.1
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

Since I can not edit my own post I'll have to reply to myself... Sorry for the "spam" on the forums.
I DID find something out (while playing with this some more)...
Try and copy as many songs as you can with UNIQUE titles. I've noticed that when you drag the songs in iTunes to the desktop (or a folder) the file it creates/copies is named like so: "songtitle.mp3."
Apparently the Finder and iTunes don't play well together [enough] to prevent several files of the same name from appearing - in most OS's I've played with (Linux and Windows, in addition to other Apple & Mac OS's over the years) there's a mechanism for handling this... Windows just adds a number to the end the of the second (and all future occurring) file(s) of the same name - as does most Linux builds I've used... Apparently the Finder in OS X just doesn't do anything - at all - when it discovers this "name error."
What I had to do (I was copying my Christmas music - do you know how many "Jingle Bells.mp3" files you can have?!) was make many folders or manually rename EACH FILE one by one so that others could be copied in the same place since the file name would always be JUST THE SONG NAME and the extension (and I do tend to keep my files in higher bitrate MP3 format for easier shuffling from OS to OS as I tend to use (in case you've not noticed) many different ones at any given time).
So, try avoiding any songs with the same title (or altering the title in iTunes somehow), or make separate folders to keep the same song name files from being created in the same place; and see if that doesn't clear this problem up for you - it did for me. ^_^
    And sorry for being so "wordy" on this post. ^_^;

  • Can't drag songs in iTunes DJ

Initially discovered as I tried to rearrange songs within iTunes DJ, but with further attempts it seems I can't drag songs at all; within playlists, into playlists, nothing. No dragging.

So, suddenly it's working again. Ugh.

  • Can't Drag Songs to Change Order??

All the playlists I've ever created on my iPod I can just drag songs up and down to change the order they play in. I just created a couple of new playlists, and they won't let me change the order of the songs. I can't drag them up and down. I tried reorganizing by using different columns. Even though it resorts on the iTunes screen, when I eject the iPod, the playlist is still in the wrong order when I try to play them.
What did I do different on this one? Why won't the playlist order change?

You do the 'rearrainging" prior to transferring the playlist to "Devices."

  • Moved Library to extenal hard drive - can't drag songs to Ipod

I moved my library from my hard drive to an external drive. Everything seems to be working fine, but I can't drag songs to my Ipod. Suggestions?

    Update
I was able to solve my problem. If anyone comes across the issue I was trying to fix, I suggest trying to move the files from WITHIN lightroom.
Originally I had used my OS to move my picture folders onto an external hard drive, by just click and drag. Lightroom was not able to keep the editing I had done on those pictures after they were moved. I restored a backup on my Mac and put the folders back to their original location. Then within the lightroom program, I was able to move the picture folders (with their edits) onto my external hard drive.

  • Can't drag songs into a playlist

    Hey folks,
I'm having trouble creating playlists and adding songs to playlists.  I've done this before (last year) but tonight I can't drag a song from iTunes store into an existing playlist and when I create a new playlist, it doesn't show up on the right hand side of the window just on the lefthand side.  I can drag songs from an existing playlist into a new playlist, but I've had no luck with new songs.  I just downloaded the latest iTunes version.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

just a thought but make sure when you make a new playlist its not a "smart" playlist.

  • Can't drag songs in playlists

I'm not able to drag songs within most of my playlists. I can drag and drop them INTO my playlists but can't drag once they're inside the lists. Does anyone know how I can correct this?

There's also a chance that you have a certain collumn header active which causing this.
Look in your iTunes Help > playlists
    for more info regarding this.

  • Can't drag songs onto iPod in iTunes

I recently sent my corrupted iPod to Apple to be serviced. It got sent back and something was wrong with the hard drive in my computer I guess. Now I set up my iPod with my computer again but I can't put song on it. I drag the songs over to the iPod in the device list, but they stay gray with the circle and slash through it. I have no idea what's wrong and I would appreciate it if someone could help.

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to automatically update. If you want to access your iPod directly, drag songs to it, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and videos" in the iPod Summary tab and click Apply. The text will change from grey to dark and the padlock will disappear: Managing content manually on iPod
Remember that if you switch to manually updating that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod

  • Can't drag songs to new playlist

I have created several playlists in the past, but now it will not allow me to drag songs to a new playlist folder. I have illiminated the possibility that I might have too many playlists by simply deleting a few, and then trying again but to no avail. Here are the things I have done to try to remedy the problem:
    1. I have backed out of itunes and restarted it, twice
    2. I unplugged my itouch and plugged it back in
    3. Ran a diagnostic on the sync between itunes and itouch
    4. I made sure my itunes was up to date
    5. Deleted a few older playlists in case there wasn't any room (which I doubt)
Has anyone had this problem before? When I drag a song to my new playlist, the circle with the line through it sits over the song, this just shouldn't be happening. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

    Thank you for the clarification.
Does this new playlist have a gear icon with a purple background or just a musical note on a blue background? If it is a gear icon, this is a smart playlist and you cannot drag songs to this kind of playlist.
When you right->click on a track and choose *Add to Playlist* does the playlist you want to drag it to show up as one of the options?

  • Can't drag songs to new nano

This is the second nano in the house. The first gets along great with the computer. We registered the second one and charged it. It synced all the songs from the library and we can play them on the ipod, but on Itunes the songs are not typed in black - they are that muted gray color and we can't access them. We can't drag to any to the new nano, click on the Itunes songs etc from the new nano, btu from the old one it's fine. Any advice? Thank you!!

The second Nano is set to Sync, not manually manage. When you plug the Nano in, on the Summary page in iTunes, you need to check the box next to "Manually manage music and videos".
    Best of luck.

  • Can't drag songs anymore

Just recently I haven't been able to drag songs into other playlists or onto my desktop. I haven't changed any preferences. What can I do to fix this?

Wht happens when you drag them to the location and drop them - if you can even drag them that is - do they just revert back to their original place?

  • Can't drag songs from Library into Playlist

Hi, I also have this problem, I find that I can't drag any songs anywhere, I want to change the playlists to random but at the moment they are all alphabetical, which is a pain. I am Blue not purple in itunes. • Can't Drag Songs to Playlists

Does anyone know what how to fix this problem? My mouse works fine, but I can't drag a song anywhere. It will highlight a song, but won't move it anywhere (a playlist, to the desktop, ipod etc.). It is as if my mouse ceases to drag in Itunes. I have tried multiple mice, with the same result. What's going on here?

Open disk utility and select your hard drive, repair permissions and verify disk on your startup volume. Then reboot your computer. If the problem persists, then create a new user account on your computer and determine if the problem occurs in this new account. If it doesn't, then your user account in corrupt and you will need to export all of our files to a new account. If the problem does continue, you might want to run a program called AppleJack(do a Google search for it). If that doesn't work, you might need to Achieve and Install you system.
