Can't drag transition

I got 2 clips of 10 sec each in the timeline.
When I try to drag a 1 second cross dissolve (or other transition), I get the X mark.
If instead I try from the pull down menu, cross dissolves is available but when I select it, it says that there is not enough material... (sorry, I'm using french version, so this might not be exactly the english message).
Anyway, I got plenty of footage in both clip... The two clips are next to each other.
Strangely, if I use 2 pics/jpg, cross disolve works just fine.
I'm using final cut express 4.0.1
iMac 10.6.7 2,8ghz 27"

Hi,
After working in FCPx for a while, at some point, either after deleting a transition or something, I lose my ability to drag transitions or clips to the time line. I don;t get the hand pointer or anything. I just can't 'pick them up' to drag them.
I am using FCPX 10.0.6 and OSX 10.7.5 on a dual CPU, Gen 2, 8 Core Mac Pro with Raid drives and a 5770 HD Apple ATI, 12GB Ram.
Workarounds
- If I restart FCPX I can go to the same cut and easly drag and drop the transition.
- If I right click the transition and set it as default, I can add it using command-T.
- When I can't drag clips from the even viewer, command-E works and then I can re-arrage them in the project timeline.
What I am hoping here is for someone to say "Oh you are inadvertently putting FCPX into 'non-drag and drop mode', just press command-something to get your drag and drop back."
It is an annoyance, but due to the fact that it works after FCPX restart with exactly the same project and process I think it may be a bug or I am getting into some mode.

Try trashing your Preferences.
This is commonly used as a remedial procedure in Applications like FCP X where preference files occasionally get corrupted and can cause unusual problems.
The simplest way to do it is by using Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion. (Free App).
With Preference Manager, you can back-up your existing preferences before trashing them, so that if the Preferences were not the cause of the problem, you can restore them with a mouse click.

You don't really loose much if anything. You only need to move the in on one and the out on the next 15 frames for a one second transition. Plus the 30 frames are not gone, they are part of the transition and can be seen, depending on the type of transition.

You can't drag a transition into the canvas. If you're dragginmg a transition from the effects tab you drag it between the edit point of two clips in the timeline.
Make sure show edit overlays is turned on in the Canvas view popup.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? If you have not already, be sure to update 12 to 12.1, using an opened project's Help Menu/Update.
But to the immediate questions, assuming Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit....
1. No, it is what it is. But, are you applying the same transition each time? If so, then highlight/select all the clips involved (all at one time), then Timeline Menu/Apply Default Transition will do just that for the highlighted/selected clips.
To highlight/select more than one clip at a time, hold down the Shift key of the computer main keyboard and then click on each clip that you want in the group selection
or
with your mouse cursor draw a rectangle around the clips that you want to select
2. Are you using the Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Expert workspace Pan and Zoom Tool? Or the pan or zoom presets under fx Effects/Presets/? With those you can do pan or zoom, not pan and zoom.
Or, are you in the Elements Organizer 12 Slideshow Editor using the pan and zoom effect there? Or, are you using keyframing the Motion Scale property for zoom and the Motion Position property for pan?
Are you asking about photos with landscape or portrait orientation?
The pan and zoom tool does one photo at a time.
Have you read the Adobe documentation on the Pan and Zoom Tool?

If third-party software called "Air Display" or "AirParrot" is installed, remove it according to the developer's instructions, then restart the computer. Back up all data before making any changes.

Can't add transitions

I have had no problem using imovie over the last few months but suddenly the add / update facility for transitions is not working. All the other editing functions seem fine but I can't drag and drop transitions anymore, or click Add and can't work out what I need to do to put them in.

Can't delete transition

I have many projects that I have saved and when I select a transition, I can not drag the transition to the trash. It makes no difference whether I am in timeline or clip view, same problem. I can edit the transition by changing the length and updating but I can't get rid of it. For example, I somehow made two fade outs after one clip. Now I am stuck with them. Even if I select one transition and press delete or command-delete, I just get an error beep. What is the secret to making iMovie release a transition and let me be in control again?

Thank you adamb529 for your very good guess. Unfortunately for me, it doesn't help. I checked the permissions and I am the owner with read and write permissions for the project. Anyone else have a guess? By the way, I found out I could delete the clip that was connected to the transition, add the exact same clip again, add the same type of transition again and it was fine. I just think I will run into this issue again some day and need a better solution than simple "start over".

I have iMovie 4 and I am trying to add transitions and titles to color clips that I have placed in my imovie. I know you are supposed to be able to "drag" titles on to the clip that you want, but there is nothing for me to drag. I am at a loss. I can't add transitions either. Please help! My first experience using iMovie has been completely awful. I thought this was supposed to be user-friendly...

You are supposed to drag the name of the title/transition from the list.

Hi eyecat - welcome to the forum!
I am sure that you mean you can NOT use the transitions:-)
You need to tell us what happens when you try to use them.
You should be dragging the little blue square from beside the transition you have chosen, down to the join between two clips. Is that what you are doing?
Are you storing your imovie projects on an external drive, or on the computer's internal drive?
Just a little tip - when typing your questions and replies, do not use the Caps Lock on your keyboard. On the forum, that is considered to be shouting angrilly, which I am sure you are not intending to suggest!

Can't Add Transitions/All Clips Stacked in one Box in Sceneline

Help-
I'm a total newbie with Premier Elements 7, but I'm about ready to throw a brick through my monitor.
I'm in Sceneline, and when I drag clips, they all get stacked on top of one another in the left box. I can't add transitions (I can find them, but when i drag them onto the transition arrows nothing happens).
What is the trick to dragging clips into new entries on the Sceneline?

The audio format (stereo or 5.1 surround sound) of your video does not match the audio format of the project preset you selected. In Timeline mode the first three tracks are reserved for the audio format determined by the project preset. If you use another audio format it will be placed on track 4. When this happens you can not see the clips in Sceneline mode... they are stacked as you are seeing.
Solution is to either use Timeline mode or if you wish to use Sceneline mode you have to use the correct project preset. HOWEVER... PE7 only supports 5.1 audio in AVCHD high definition projects... so if you have standard definition with 5.1 audio you have no choice other than to use Timeline mode. If you want to do any serious editing you will really need to use this mode anyway.

The situation of iCal is: 1) I can not drag any event from calander to reminder, 2) the 'paste' bottom in reminder is disabled, and 3) sortord in reminder does not work, i.e. I can not change order even if I select 'manual' .
Anyone met these situation before? Please help~

Can't drag files into folders in PDF portfolio

I have created a PDF portfolio that contains primarily PDFs converted from e-mail messages, along with a few files from various Microsoft Office products. The portfolio has been added to over time, and now we have almost 100 files in the portfolio, so we'd like to organize these files into folders so it is easier to use.
However, when I create a folder, I am not able to drag any files into it. I've tried all different types of files--PDFs, Word, PowerPoint--when I drag the file on top of the folder, I get the circle backslash symbol indicating the function is not allowed. I can't find any information about this in the Help files; every tutorial I've looked at indicates that I should be able to drag and drop files wherever I like, but doesn't mention what to do if I can't.
I'm using Acrobat Pro X on Windows XP with Service Pack 3.
Any suggestions about why this might be happening and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated! I really don't want to have to recreate the whole thing, but it's not going to be very useful if we continue adding unorganized files.

I tried a different layout (I had a custom layout set up; I switched to the standard Grid), and I still can't drag and drop.
I just now created a new portfolio with a few of the same files, and I was able to drag the files into a folder I created.
Yes, the original portfolio was created in Acrobat 9.

Can not drag anything in finder to desktop, itunes, ect.?

While the finder window is open I continue to try and drag any of the icons in there to either my desktop or my itunes. I am trying to move some music I have in my finder on to my itunes library and I can not drag or even move any of the icons for some odd reason. Any help with this? Thanks

I had a similar problem but worse in that I couldn't drag anything anywhere in Safari 5.1.2. Even drag in the "Customize Toolbar" dialog did not work.
I switched off extensions, quite Safari and restared. The problem cleared and has remained clear after several launches of Safari.
I only had ClickToFlash and ClickToDevonThink installed.
