Can't drag windows around using the title bar-CS4

I just upgraded to CS4 at work last week and I'm already regretting it. Firstly, using two monitors, CS4 must like my graphics card becasue as soon as I open a document and it begins to render the window, the main monitor loses it's signal and cuts off. So I have to hard shut down and make my 2nd monitor the main one, open CS4 and a file on that monitor, then make it the 2nd monitor and pass it over to my real first monitor with a file open and make that monitor the main one again. Added to that, randomly, files will open as tabs even though I have the option unchecked in prefs. I hate tabs, I want my windows floating. But I digress.
My current issue is the file windows are not movable using the title bar. I can expand/contract every side grabbing the edge, but clicking, holding and dragging any of the title bar is ineffective. I can drag to tab to undock it, but once floating, the title bar is non-funtional for grabbing. I can also double click on it to tab, just not to drag.
I use a mac at home and thankfully Adobe hasn't forced the edge to edge palette background on that platform. On the mac we get a 'classic view' or something that does away with the desktop blocking grey window background. Seriously, I can't stand the full screen look. Why can't windows have that option to have just the menu bar, palettes and file windows allowing the desktop to be visible? /rant

A new video card is often a good idea if yours is over 2 years old.  Even the modern "budget" (e.g., ~$100) cards are hugely powerful nowadays.

  • Dragging Windows without grabbing the title bar

    Everyone,
    I'm trying to make the switch to OS X but there is one feature that I must have before switching. The feature is "Alt-Drag", the same feature that X Windows in Linux has. I use this in Windows as well with a third party utility.
    Basically the way this works is you press a keyboard modifier (like Alt or a combination there of) and then you can click anywhere on any window and you have "grabbed" that window. This is VERY handy once you get used to it and I can't switch to OS X without it...
    I've done a lot of Googling but have come up empty...
    Thanks!

    Hi, Ross.
    If someone has developed a similar solution for Mac OS X, you are likely to fnd it by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings can be helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.
    Good luck!

  • How can I move files using the title bar

    I am using Mountain Lion, latest release (10.8.4) and am wondering if there is some secret options which would allow me to move files by clicking on the title bar (of e.g. preview) and moving it to a directory.
    Unfortunately, I can only either create a link or copy the file. Moving seems to be deactivated, though I have learned from other forums posts that this was working under Tiger.
    Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    equi

    Depends on the application. iCloud-aware applications (Preview, Pages, etc) have the behavior you describe, and you can't move a file by dragging the thumbnail icon, but there is a small popup triangle to the right of the filename which contains the option "Move To" - you can then select your destination. It's not as seamless and dragging and dropping, though, I agree.
    Non-iCloud-aware apps, like Office 2011, still allow drag-to-move from the titlebar icon.

  • Since installing Firefox 8 beta, can't move tabs around within the tab bar; can this be fixed without reverting to earlier version? Thank you.

    Before moving to Firefox 8, I could drag and drop tabs within the tab bar to reorder them, which was very convenient. Since installing the first beta of Firefox 8, the tabs don't move. Should I revert to an earlier version of Firefox? If so, which one? Thank you for any help with may favorite browser. Tom

    Tor Button addon was the cause in my case.

  • Can I reposition windows without using mouse?

    I'm using a third-party application which, when opening a new window, insists on putting the title bar at the top of the window underneath the menu bar at the top of the screen. This occudes the title bar and makes it impossible to click on it to move the window elsewhere on the screen. I also can't minimize or maximize the window because those buttons are also on the title bar.
    Is there a method in OS X that will let me select a window and reposition it on the screen without using the mouse to click-and-drag? (Perhaps using the arrow keys somehow?) Or alternatively, is there a way to automatically reposition all the open windows so that the title bar would become visible (like the tile function I remember from some past Mac version of Word)?
    FYI: I've tried Exposé, but that only brings up a "ghost image" of the window. When I click on it, it immediately heads back to its "occluded" position. I've also tried resizing and rotating the screen in System Preferences. That doesn't work either.
    Thanks for any help you can provide. This is driving me crazy!

    What about enabling Spaces and assigning the window to a different Space - does that have an effect on how the application is positioned?
    What about pressing cmdshift/ to open the help menu. Then type in "Zoom" (assuming that command exists within the application's menus) and press enter. This should have the same effect as pressing the green plus sign in the application top left corner.
    Note that the menus of your application may have several zoom functions. For instance Firefox 3 has Zoom In and Zoom Out under the View menu (for zooming the webpage) and Zoom (the green plus function) for maximising the application window. This means I have to use arrow keys to find the right one in the help menu. However, unless your application is too far "up" or beyond the top of the screen, you should see the menus when you use the arrow keys - a floating blue arrow appears next to the command.
    I found a commercial application that allows moving windows with the keyboard, MercuryMover:

    (see also here http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080428064742892)
    I haven't tried it myself but perhaps it will help.

  • Disabling close 'X' icon in the title bar of JDialog

    I found that JDialogs by default come up with the close 'X' icon. The only manipulation that can be done is by setting the DefaultCloseOperation.
    Is there some way I can avoid showing that icon on the title bar?
    My JDialog already has a 'Close' button and I have written an action listener for it. I dont want to listen to WindowEvents as well.

    JDialog d = new JDialog((Frame)c, true);
    d.setSize(400,300);
    d.setUndecorated(true);
    d.getRootPane().setWindowDecorationStyle(JRootPane.PLAIN_DIALOG);That bit of code seems to get rid of the title bar entirely and cause a MetalLookAndFeel dragging bar without an X to appear.
    Let me know if this is a satisfying solution
    My full test code followsimport java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class DyalogTest extends JFrame
       public DyalogTest()
          super("Dialog Test");
          setSize(500, 400);
          setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
          Container c = getContentPane();
          c.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
          JButton b = new JButton("Initiate Dialog");
          b.addActionListener(new ActionListener()
             public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
                Component c = SwingUtilities.getRoot((Component)e.getSource());
                JDialog d = new JDialog((Frame)c, true);
                d.setUndecorated(true);
                d.getRootPane().setWindowDecorationStyle(JRootPane.PLAIN_DIALOG);
                JButton b = new JButton("Dispose");
                b.addActionListener(new ActionListener()
                   public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)

                      JDialog d = (JDialog)c;
                      d.setVisible(false);
                      d.dispose();
                d.getContentPane().setLayout(new FlowLayout());
                JPanel p = new JPanel();
                p.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(400,300));
                p.setBorder(BorderFactory.createTitledBorder("Vanilla Dialog"));
                p.add(b);
                d.setContentPane(p);

    I tried to download latest windows support using the boot camp , but the download stopped beacause of a network proplem ,  can you help?!

    I have the same issues.  I keep getting a "network error" even though my connections are fine.  I have installed Bootcamp fine on another Macbook, but am having major issues with my brand new one.  I have read the support forums where they say to keep trying because the servers are notoriously slow, but this seems a little ridiculous.  Hope I can get some help as well.
    Thanks!

  • Unable to drag window around

    Something very strange happens to me today and I can not figure out how to fix this, so I am hoping someone would shed some light here as it's driving me crazy.
    I was working on my MBP today until somehow it got totally frozen and it did not respond to anything I do including attempt to shut down the machine. As a last resort, I had to press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds to shut down the machine.
    Upon re-booting my machine, now I notice I am UNABLE to drag the window around (like mail, ical, safari..etc). I can always drag (or move if you will ) the window around by press and hold down my thumb and with another finger. Now all of a sudden, that does not work for me anymore, and the only way to drag the window is to move the cursor to top of the window, tap twice with one finger, then drag.
    I know this sound very bizarre and i am totally baffled by this. I was thinking perhaps when I shut it down using the power button, somehow something was not closed properly and it left something in a limbo state.
    Would someone please tell me how to fix this? like remove some systems file or plist or whatever... please help as this is most annoying not able to drag the window around.

    @macjack
    I removed those two plists you suggested, restarted, it did not help
    @andyball
    Sorry for the confusion, I have always been able to place the cursor on the title bar of a window, hold down with my thumb and move with a second finger. Of course, now that does not work. Tapping twice when the cursor on the title bar is the only way I can move the window.
    Additional info here, when I plug in a mouse, I can move while holding down the button.
    I wonder if my trackpad is messed up.

  • TS1248 Trackpad - can't move windows around - curser works -tap works

    Try using 3 fingers on the title bar. Can you screenshot your trackpad settings in system prefrences.

  • Odd action using the icon in the title bar of image in psCS5--???????

    i use imac, lion.
    by accident, i discovered that, clicking on and dragging the icon at the left of the title bar (actually within the title bar to left of file name),  i can sometimes open the
    image in ACR,  as hosted by BRIDGE (which is not running. i do not use bridge).
    sometimes the image will be duplicated following this dragging of icon, the new duplicate lying atop the image of the background layer, in the same window, and shows the diagonal bars awaiting resizing. if i just click the ("checkmark")  in the options bar to accept this new layer,  or, if i  press enter, i am looking at a new layer, which is a duplicate of the background layer. this new layer is a "SMART OBJECT", and functions as such.
    this happens only with JPG and TIF files, not with RAW.  i have ACR prefs set to open all supported jpg and tif files.
    i should note that none of this occurs if the image has been edited in any way. in fact, after any edit the icon in the title bar is not movable.
    i am having some difficulty describing a simple and quick process. i don't know if this is a bug, a feature, or the result of too much RED BULL!  i Just reread post and it does seem delusional.
    can anyone help?

    it seems to work with or without the shift key.
    I work with OS 10.6.8 and you are right that it works without shift, too.
    My surmise is that the title bar’s icon of non-dirty files (files that have no History steps save the Open-step or have just been saved) behaves like the file’s icon in the Finder as the behaviour seems to be exactly like a drag-and-drop from the Finder (as a Smart Object if set in the Photoshop > Preferences > General > Place or Drag Raster Images as Smart Objects, not if set otherwise) and works across files, too.
    I don’t think I had noticed that previously, but that behaviour may well be fully intentional.

  • How to catch drag event in the title bar of a jframe

    Hi
    I want to catch the drag event in the title bar for jframe, because I have a few more window, dialogs, which I want to move along with my main window
    Thanks

    you can use a listener like tih one below...it works if you don't move to quickly.....
    class SynchroMover extends ComponentAdapter{
      private JFrame master;
      private JFrame[]slaves;
      private int currentX;
      private int currentY;
      public SynchroMover(JFrame master,JFrame[]slaves){
        this.master = master;
        this.slaves = slaves;
        currentX =(int) master.getLocation().getX();
        currentY =(int) master.getLocation().getY();
      public void componentMoved(ComponentEvent e){
        int dx = (int)master.getLocation().getX() - currentX;
        int dy = (int)master.getLocation().getY() - currentY;
        System.out.println(dx+" "+dy);
        for(int i=0;i<slaves.length;i++)
          slaves.setLocation((int)(slaves[i].getLocation().getX()+dx),(int)(slaves[i].getLocation().getY()+dy));
    currentX = (int)master.getLocation().getX();
    currentY = (int)master.getLocation().getY();
    the code isn't optimized...so you can probably do better
