Can't drop movie into iTunes

I have a AVI-movie. The video track is "Generic MPEG-4" and the sound track is "ATSC A/52 and AC-3 Decoder".
I can play the file with QuickTime-Player but can't drop it into iTunes library.
Whats wrong?

Video files MUST be in the right format to be used on video and iphone devices.
I was only able to get a few videos myself onto my player.

To make it display on the desktop, Finder > Preferences > General tab > check external disks.
The drive might be formatted NTFS for Windows which is treated as read-only on the Mac. Need to reformat it using disk utility.

If you want to watch on a television screen, you need an AppleTV.

If the movies are purchased, there is no need for an Internet connection to the outside world. If they're rented, you need an Internet connection for the first minute or so that Apple knows that you're watching the movie. I do not know if a rented movie can be stopped and restarted without an Internet connection.

i used to hold down alt whilst draging the movie into the menu at the left side of itunes now that menu is no longer there

the movie file now shows up in home videos within the movie folder so all my movies are in the movie file in itunes except the new ones now go into movie/home video itunes since i updated itunes
As implied above, if you do not use a metadata tagging utility and share or import your files directly to iTunes the new files are automatically tagged as "Home Videos" during the import process but you can still use iTunes to make them appear in the same directory as your other movies just as you always could chage their display directory. Simply...
1) select the "Movies/Home Videos" tab in the main window,
2) select any/all of the videos you want moved,
3) select the "File/Get Info" menu option (or press "Command-I") to open the "Information" window,
4) select the "Options" tab in the "Information" window
5) Select the "Movie" option in the "Video Kind" pop-up, and
6) Press the "OK" button to move all items selected in step #2 above to your "Movie" directory and close the "Information" window.
If you use a metadata tagging utility to add tags to your videos before import to iTunes, then pre-assign the "Movie" Media Kind tag to your files before import to iTunes. If you use a metadata tagging utility to tag files after import to iTunes, then manually set the "Movie" Media Kind option in that app and let it update the iTunes "Movie" directory. If the metadata tagging utility has not yet been updated to recognized files pre-assigned to the "Home Videos" directory, then manually tag the Media Kind in iTunes as described above before using the metadata tagging utility. If you don't like having iTunes automatically assign the "Home Videos" tag to untagged videos during import, then use the iTunes Product Feedback form to request an iTunes "Preference" enhancement option be added to the application allowing users to select a default "Media Kind" to be assigned to "untagged" video files during import.

Can't download Movies into Itunes or on my iPad

I bought 3 tv shows and then rented 2 movies. Only the tv shows would download directly to my iPad. Now I am having to download the movies directly into iTunes and then will try to sync to my iPad. I am pretty upset. This has been an all night problem and of course tech support is not 24/7. I am leaving for the airport in 1 hour and the movie I am trying to download is taking forever. I looked on the forums and it seems that everyone is having the same or similar problems. I am using iTunes 10 and there is tons of space of my iPad. Thanks for your help

Check Settings>General>Restrictions and make sure that you did not restrict it.
Swipe from screen to screen to look for it.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset home screen layout will return it to the home screen, but the screen will like like it did "out of the box".

Can't drag movies into iTunes v8

or should I rather say, I can drag 'em, but the do not land there.
When dragging a .avi-movie in Vista, the thumbnail is shown, but the LIBRARY tab does not highlight, when dragging the movie over it (as it is, when dragging an MP3 there) Dropping the file subsequently does nothing. The iPod manual says iTunes supports all files supported in Quicktime, and the file in question plays fine in Quicktime...
Any idea would be appreciated.

Ah. Just updated iPod again and movie dragged in fine.
Odd how it should work for one and not the other.
I guess that could a "bug fix" that the update referred to?

If they are your own private vdieos, it's fine to import them. They need to be in the right format i.e. Quickitme format or MPEG4.
If the are not you need to convert them, here is a link to a free converter, I have not tried it myself so can not vouch for its quality:

After installing iTunes 10.5.1, I can no longer drag and drop files into iTunes. Any suggestions?

Basically when I try to drag files from a folder into iTunes, (drag and drop within iTunes is fine) the little picture of the circle with a slash through it shows up and wont allow me to drop it into iTunes. I can't see any logic behind removing the drag and drop function, especially when adding a new folder is now a multi-step process that is far from obvious. to start a new playlist with local folder content you now need to:enter settingsclick into advanced settings (basically all settings now seem to be "advanced"?)manually find and add the foldergo through the adventure of finding the files in your library.

Have a current movie on my computer and can't get it into ITunes so I can put on my IPAd. I tried dragging from desktop and nothing happens, also tried adding file or folder to library and nothing happens.

Convert your movie to quicktime or another format iTunes can play.
If you can add it and play it in iTunes, it will also work on the iPad.

If the movies were rentals then no.
If the movies are purchases and you have the iTunes 10.4 then you should be able to access the 'cloud' option from in the main iTunes page - purchases - (upper right corner) and go from there.
You should also have the option to transfer purchases from the iPad back into iTunes. I don't have an iPad but you can transfer purchases from the iPod/iPhone back to iTunes.

okay, my mom has an old imac g4. round base, chrome stand and pivot swival screen. anyway, it was pretty out of date as far as software is concerned. i've since got it updated with tiger and the latest version of itunes. however, when i try to drag and drop movies into the itunes movies section, it doesn't allow it. on my intel imac, it lets me drag them in and drop. on this old imac, it won't let me. what do i need to do to get this working? i would greatly appreciate any help. i can't get the photos to sync either because her iphoto is out of date. the movies i have tried are mp4 and m4v movies that are successfully in itunes on my intel imac. thanks for any help!

2) Try Disc Utility and run Repair Permissions on the iMac G4. Restart. Try again.

Can't rename movie in iTunes

I imported a few home movies into iTunes. However a few of them can't be renamed. What ever I tried, the name was reset to the old name. I've tried
renaming the name field in iTunes (directly in the list but also in the "Info"-Window - new file name is accepted but disappears
copying the movie file to the desktop;
deleting the movie from iTunes (I selected to delete the file too and verified that it was deleted);
renaming the movie-file on the desktop to the desired name;
importing the renamed movie-file into iTunes
result: the renamed file appeared in the folder where the original file was but about half way through the copying process it is being renamed to the old name (under which it appears also in the iTunes list).
I should mention that the iTunes library is on a Synology DiskStation. ...urgently need help - any idea what can be done? Thanks!!

iTunes will rename the finder file name to match the "Name" column of the iTunes window. If you rename the file from the finder then play the file via iTuens it will again be renamed to match the "Name" column.
To rename items then do it from the iTunes window and not the finder. Also make suer the file is not locked.

you can copy them for your own use.
Copying is not the issue. Breaking the encryption is.
But it's kind of a catch 22 in that you cannot copy a DVD unless you break the encryption.
in Europe it is not
Europe is not one country.
Most European countries have their own equivalent of the DMCA and it is illegal to break the encryption in some of these countries.
