Can't dual boot into Win7
I have MBP early-2011, MacOS 10.6.8 with a bootcamp partition for windows 7 ultimate.
everything was working fine until I had some trouble with the MacOS partition and had to re-install OS in the MacOS partition. ever since then, when I try to boot into Win7 by holding down the "option" key while booting up, the windows7/bootcamp partition no longer shows up as a boot option.
when I access the bootcamp partition using Parallels Desktop 8, it works, although not very stable (takes a very long time to open Quicken, for instance. just generally not very smooth operating)
how can I fix this? anyone know what may be wrong? if I really need to, I will re-install Win7, but that means I'll probably have to make calls to Microsoft, etc for the licensing thing, so it's painful (although do-able), so I'd like to avoid that if possible.
whoa! I just used DiskUtil info, and now it says the bootcamp partition is disk0s2 and not disk0s5! (I have no clue why this happened. installing MBR on a partition shouldn't change disk identifier, would it!?!?!?)
so I just re-ran your command to disk0s2 and got something more to your liking... I think...
$ sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s2 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Uninstall Linux and Grub dual boot from Win7 HP dm4..
uninstall Linux and Grub dual boot from Win7 HP dm4. I only have recovery disks. I just want to do a Startup Repair not a full system recovery.
When I reboot with the recovery disk there is no choice for Startup Repair.
thank you for any help.
Blue JacketHello bluecape. I understand you'd like to uninstall Grub/Linux. Is your recovery disc a Windows Recovery disc or the HP System Recovery disc?
You will need to begin by fixing the "Master Boot Record." This is where Grub is installed and what allows you to select your operating system. If you have a HP System Recovery disc the steps may be different--these steps are specifically for a Windows Recovery Disc. Try the following.
Boot the notebook with your Recovery Disc.
Select "Repair your Computer."
Select your Windows version once the dialog box populates.
Choose "Command Prompt" as your Recovery Tool.
From the command prompt type "bootrec /FixMbr" and press Enter.
Once this is finished type "exit" and press Enter.
Take the disc out and reboot the PC. It should boot straight into Windows without a boot loader prompting you.
The Linux files and partitions are still there but you can now remove those partitions from Windows. Simply format the partitions to "uninstall" Linux.
I hope this is helpful. If you have further questions just let me know. Have a great day!
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"
Click the "Accept as Solution" button if I resolve your issue. -
Can I dual boot OS 9 and 10.5 on one of these (G4 MDD)?
Simple question, can you dual boot OS 9 along side OS X Leopard on I'm looking a 1.25ghz G4 (single processor), basically the last one Apple ever released in 2003. It says in the specs for it that it can boot OS 9.2.2 and it is also compatible with Leopard. I know Leopard isn't compatible with the classic environment but I don't want classic in OS X, I merely want to be able to boot into OS 9 for some games, and when I want to use the web to be able to boot into Leopard.
Welcome!
Does anyone know of a good and trusted source for the original install discs for this machine?
Several people here have called Apple fpr these and were told they no longer carry replacement disks for this machine. It's back to eBay or the local Mac user group. Any used Mac that does not come with the system restore disks should be considered defective and avoided, or at least heavily discounted. Can the seller find the disks for you?
Every time I try to transfer a System Folder to the machine..........
That because you need the special version of OS9 on the system disk.
I do have a 733 G4 with a valid OS 9 System Folder. Can I transfer that via target mode and expect it to boot the 1.25?
I've not tried it but, based on my experiences with my MDD and its special needs, I don't think that will work.
If you get a righteous system restore disk set, there is one more hoop: OS9 will not boot if installed on a volume larger than about 195G. I tried installing it on a 250GB drive. It installed and would work in Classic emulation, but would not boot until I wiped that drive and made a modest partition in which OS9 resides.

As an aside, never be afraid to start a new topic in these forums. That usually will get you better help faster because some people will not read an addition to a thread that is already months old, like this one. I realize some web forums flame on people who start new threads but that is not the case around here. Tagging on to an existing thread confuses those offering help and dilutes the help that you and the original poster (OP) both deserve.
I realize that finding how to start a new thread around here is non-intuitive. This link should hep if you encounter what thousands of others have:

We look forward to seeing more of you here!
PS: I love your user name! My wife thinks I should have a similar one as we have ~15 Macs in the family. -
Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive
Can I dual boot snow leopard and mountain lion if I've installed boot camp on my drive
Yes as I said before. If your model Mac came with Snow Leopard and you are now running Mt Lion and have Windows installed in a Boot Camp Partition all you have to do is make the Mt Lion partition smaller, take the free space and make it another Mac partition and you should be able to install Snow Leopard into that partition.
I have Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt Lion installed on my MBP. No Windows in a Boot Camp partition because I run Windows XP in a Virtual Machine on both Lion and Mt Lion. -
Can I dual boot with MAC OS/X and Windows
What is the best way to configure a dual boot on my MAC Bookpro laptop? Also, can I dual boot Windows 8 and MAC OS?
The first alternative is a dual-boot arrangement between OS X and Windows provided with OS X.
Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7. For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
with OS X.
3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows. The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive. -
Can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5
My problem is that I can no longer boot into Mavericks 10.9.5 on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro. The problem arose suddenly without any known major changes to my software or hardware. The booting process freezes with the apple visible and the circle below it spinning endlessly. Every several seconds, the display very briefly gets brighter, then the circle starts spinning again and the process repeats itself. It never gets to the user login screen.
Other than keeping various apps up to date, I don't recall any recent major operating system or other major software updates, nor have I made any recent hardware changes. I've searched a multitude of threads and and tried any number of fixes without success. Here's what I've tried so far (and probably a few more that I can't remember): (1) Repaired the startup disk with both Recovery HD -> Disk Utility and single-user mode -> /sbin/fsck -fy; (2) Repaired the startup disk permissions with Recovery HD -> Disk Utility; (3) Reloaded the Mavericks 10.9.5 operating system twice; (4) deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist; (5) reset PRAM and NVRAM; (6) booted with "D" pressed and ran the Apple hardware test, which ran for about 40 minutes and reported no problems; (7) tried booting from a bootable clone of Mavericks 10.9.5 on an external hard drive, which also failed at the same place with the apple showing and the circle below it spinning endlessly. ***Oddly, I am able to boot from a bootable clone of Mountain Lion on an external hard drive. It's Mavericks that won't boot.***
Here is the part of the system log the repeats itself over and over and seems to correlate with the repeated failed attempts to complete the booting process. Any help would be appreciated beyond words:

You got a prob I think, if you can boot a windows, MSconfig, startup options might restore the boot files.Only other thing is to try and either load a new windows and let it setup a boot file, or perhaps a win98 startup disk, and fdisk, then set active partiton, which will set an MBR. But that would leave a load of work to do, I think I'd opt for an install of XP, and let it repair existing installation, and make a new boot file.
Hope you don't need the info on disks. If you do, I would install another HDD, load XP, then copy original Disk to save place.
Good luck

I currently run Mac Pro with three hard drives. Can I dual boot or even triple boot with Snow Leopard on one drive and Mountain Lion or Lion on others?
I need to keep Snow Leopard so that I can run some old softward. If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.
CCC can clone Lion Recovery - great for moving or backup. -
Can I dual boot Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion on one hard drive?
I want to make a new partition and be able to boot to either OS. Is this possible, if so, how? I would think just make a new partition and install the dmg file to that new partition.
@jimmyk11: AppleCare has actually informed me that "No - this MacBooPro9,1 cannot boot Snow Leopard".
It originally came with lion 10.7.4 installed. I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8 and (today, after a week or so of ML) I reverted to Lion 10.7.4. But now I find I can no longer boot into Lion 10.7.4 from my external FW800 drive (for troubleshooting and housekeeping). So it looks as if the "boot problems" are not confined to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Interestingly, I can use this same external drive to boot my iMac (10.7.4) and my older MBP8,3 (10.8) into 10.7.4 - but not the newer MBP9,1.
The MBP9,1 with Lion and Mountain Lion is turning into a disaster when it comes to external booting. If I could, I'd demand a return and a refund. After bottle-feeding Lion for a year, 10.7.4 seems basically stable and can still boot into Snow Leopard and Lion from my external drives if needed. But now I see I have a worse problem: Crippled Hardware. I suspect this bug needs a firmware update - if it is fixable at all. -
Can I dual boot Mountain Lion and OSX10.6.8
Can I dual boot Mountain Lion and OSX 10.6.8. I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my InDesign CS2 no longer works. If yes, how does one do it.
Thanks all,Yes, as long as your computer shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, restart with the C key held down, and install it onto a separate partition or drive; if you use Boot Camp, repartitioning the internal drive may disable it.

Can you dual boot lion with an older verion of Mac OS?
Can you dual boot Lion Os with and Older version of Mac Os (Snow Leopard?) So one can rum Power PC apps until they are upgraded?
You can dual boot if your machine originally came with an older OS version. No Mac can boot from an older version than the one it came with - notable exceptions are if the machine was built right around the time of the new OS release; in that case, it would depend on the machine and OS builds - it may or may not be possible.
So the important question here is: did yours come with Lion preinstalled? The answer is most likely: No. Or Snow Leopard? The answer would be: Yes. -
[SOS]Which mac mini device can install dual boot(Lion and Mt Lion)?

I got late 2012 one, but it looks like it does not support.
Please help me.
Thank you so much,
TriQuangHi Niel,
Thank you for your fast reply. So if I buy mac mini MC815 model, which comes with preinstalled Lion I can run dual boot(Lion and Mt Lion)?
I have one more question: Can I install Mac OS 10.6 on that mini device? If it's not supported which mac mini model can I get to support Snow Leopard and Lion and Mt Lion?
Thanks and best regards,

FreeBSD didn't install, i can no longer boot into Windows
I unsuccessfully installed FreeBSD and I can no longer boot into an OS from the HD. I attempted to install BSD onto the "G" drive below however the the install gave me some kind of storage error and I can no longer boot into Windows. While going through the BSD installation process I opted to NOT install a boot manager (I incorrectly assumed that this would leave my existing boot manager intact).
Here's how I was partitioned pre-FreeBSD (these are all partitions on the same SATA 80GB drive):
C:\ Windows ME
D:\ Windows XP sp1a
E:\ Windows XP-64 beta
F:\ Longhorn 64 preview
[G]:\ unpartitioned 4GB
[F]:\ uformatted 4GB
H:\ NTFS Storage
I:\ FAT32 Storage
Before I attempted to install BSD, I used c:\boot.ini as my boot manager.
Now when I try to boot it says:
Code: [Select]
Invalid Partition
Invalid Partition
No /boot/loader
FreeBSD/i386 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)/kernel
boot:
Invalid Partition
No /kernel
FreeBSD/i386 boot
Default: 0:ad(0,a)/kernel
boot: _
Has anyone else ever had this happen to them? If so how can I reenable booting into Windows?Hi

Hi Emma,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your Thunderbolt display is just showing a black screen when you boot your computer. The following article should be of help in troubleshooting your display.

I have been looking for a solution to this for some time now. I want the convenience of a virtual Windows environment that can run simultaneously with OS X Lion--something I have right now using Virtualbox. But at the same time, there are graphics and processor-intensive Windows applications (for me, games and engineering applications) that don't run well at all in a virtual machine. So, here is what I am looking for:
A dual boot (i.e. bootcamp) system running Windows 7 and OS X Lion in which the Windows 7 machine can EITHER be booted as a virtual machine while running OS X OR booted physically so as to utitlize all system resources. The real trick however, is that I I want the virtual machine and the physical machine to be the exact same system. Meaning, if I boot physically into Windows and change something... rename a file, run a program and create a file, etc... those changes will all appear in the virtual machine.
Now, what are my options? I have read about Virtualbox and VMWare Fusion's "Raw Disk access" function but I can't tell if that's what I'm looking for or not... I half-thought that they were talking about converting a physical OS into a virtual machine, but without the intention of booting the physical OS again...
Also, I'm open to any software, free or otherwise. Thanks!both VMWare Fusion & Parallels Desktop for Mac can use a bootcamp Windows installation as VM exactly like you want.

How can I dual boot Windows 7 on a MBR disk and Windows 8 on GPT Disk with UEFI BIOS
I have recently build a computer. I bought a Seagate 3TB HDD which I planned to install Windows 8.1 Pro on and I also bought another Seagate 1TB HDD which I planned to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I wanted to dual boot the two systems.
However, I want to format the 3TB HDD into GPT and format the 1TB HDD into MBR mode.
Can this be done in a UEFI BIOS environment?
Windows 7 Ultimate X64 ---------- MBR 1TB HDD
Windows 8.1 Pro X64--------------- GPT 3TB HDD
Please reply soon, because I am in a hurry to solve this problem.
My family members need a working PC at home :)
