Can't edit contacts Droid X

Since the new Droid X OS pushed out in Fall 2011, I can no longer edit contacts and have the new info display.   I'm a doctor, my phone has a blocked caller ID, I don't want patients getting my cell number when I return calls at night when I'm on call for the practice.  For friends, I like to have both the unblock code for calling and the plain number for texting show up in the contact list.   E.g. *82-800-555-1212 and 800-555-1212.  I used to be able to do this.  The older contacts, from before the new OS, will display as many numbers as I originally entered when creating the contact.  Now, if I add a number to a contact, it will always be there under the edit screen but it will not display when viewing the contact normally.  If I add a new contact, I can only have one number display.  I've been round and round with VZ tech support, they have been great and tried hard.   They even sent out a new phone.  I've wiped the OS, reinstalled it, no luck.  There is nothing in the VZ tech support intranet database about this problem.  I've searched this forum.
It does not matter which version of the number I'm trying to add, nor how I designate it (Home, work, other etc).  It doesn't matter if I add it in Gmail contacts.
I'm about to get a new phone (probably a Droid Razr Maxx)  I'm worried this problem will carry over to the new phone.   I think it's a problem with Gmail, or backup assistant, or Facebook, but there's no response when I email Gmail or Facebook about it.   It's really driving me nuts.  Any help greatly appreciated.

sounds like you need 2 phones
you know it works the same way for your patients, they like to see who's calling.
i remember back in the old days before verizon/gte, you could use a pause, guess things changed as the phones got smarter.
fwiw:
my wife won't answer calls on her cell or the home phone if it shows restricted.
btw:
if i don't want someone/company to see my caller id, i add *67 to the front of the number being called from either my cell or home phone.

  • Address Book: Can't edit contact or add new

I have two computers and an iPhone that should be synching Address Book and iCal amongst themselves on Mobile Me. Recently, the iBook G4's Address Book has had some features disabled: the "edit" button is grayed out, the "+" button is grayed out, and trying to access the same functions under the file or edit menus, the same things are all grayed out. There doesn't seem to be anything in the settings or preferences that I can find that could be contributing to this problem. I need to be able to add and edit contacts from all 3 places, thus the point of having each of the devices and having Mobile Me. I don't know if this is an Address Book bug or a Mobile Me bug, as sometimes changes sync to iCal or Address Book, and sometimes they don't. Sometimes new changes are overwritten with old data, etc. Frustrating! It would seem an Address Book issue to not be able to add/edit though. Any ideas? And yes, both computers are on the same OS, 10.5.6.

Thanks to jamesk8752's link...I fixed it!!! :-) That link he posted brought me to the fix. I wrote it out easier to follow. I want to mention that when I upgraded to Mountain Lion the issue continued. This fix did the trick
    1. Make a Backup Archive of your AddressBook.app (or Contacts.app)
    2. Shut off iCloud Syncing (choose the option to delete the contacts).
    3. Now with NO contacts in AddressBook (Contacts) quit the application.
    4. Click on "go" and choose "go to folder" & navigate to [username]/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (even in Mountain Lion this is still accurate)
    5. DELETE the addressbook-v22.abcddb file. Empty trash (just because I have OCD).
    6. Reopen AddressBook/Contacts & create a new address card. You should now be able to edit it! Then delete it.
    7. Go back into System Prefrences and turn on iCloud Contacts.
Your iCloud contacts will then appear and you'll be able to edit, delete, add, etc! Everything will be right as rain!

  • Can't Edit Contacts - can't export them to re-import them!

    Hi everyone,
After updating my Bold 9700 to OS6 I accidentally synced contacts with Facebook and gmail, causing duplicate entries. Not just a few, but practically every person I know now has 3-7 contacts, and some are even blank.
I'd love to be able to A) export contacts, edit them, and re-import them, OR B) just edit them in Dektop Manager. Of course, it looks like neither option is possible. I can get a *.bbb backup file, but I can't find anything that will edit it. I'm running OS X 10.6.8. Why can't I get a CSV or something?
And yes, I've tried most of the other solutions offered on here, like
Filters - nope, it's all in the main contact list
Wipe and re-sync from an address book - Nope, I've added too many people from work and other places by hand that I no longer have one good source for that
    Thanks!

aehm, forgot to mention Windows XP SP2

  • Can't edit contacts in address book under Lion

Instead of the "Edit" and "Share" buttons that normally appear at the bottom of my listed contacts, I only have "Add Contact" and "Share."  What gives?  Why can't I edit any of my contacts?

Hey - I just found a post on another thread which cured my problem (same as yours).  Here are the details.
If you just upgraded to Lion, you get 90 days of complimentary support, so don't be bashful.  Call 'em.  I called Apple support and they resolved this specific issue.  We first verified that a newly created Admin account could create and edit Address Book.  When it did, we rightly assumed corruption in the Address Book Library files.
Here are the steps from that point.
Back up your Address Book: From Address Book, choose File > Export and choose Export vCard to a desitnation of your choosing.
    Close Address Book.
From the Desktop, Hold Option and click Go in the menu at the top of the screen.
Choose Library.  If this is not an option, you are not pressing the Option key or you are not an Admin.
Expand the Application Support folder and drag the AddressBook folder to the Trash.  Close window.
Open Address Book and import your address book vCard.
PS: mine was nothing to do with permissions. . . .

  • CAN'T  EDIT CONTACT LIST

HOW CAN YOU GET EDIT BUTTON BACK ON CONTACT LIST?

Go to settings, select Icloud, turn on contacts tab, it should work now.

  • Can only edit contact through Call Log

It seems I used to be able to touch Contacts, then touch a specific contact, then press the Menu to view/edit a contact - I can't get that to work any more.  It just gives an error buzz when I press Menu.  The only way I've found to view/edit is to go in through the Call Log.  Anybody got a suggestion?

You are welcome. It just takes some getting used to using the OS.
If you find a solution helpful please mark it as solved and give the person with the soltuion Kudos (this is just for everyone in general).

  • Can not edit Contacts

Contacts does not keep changes/edits made to cards.

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Just upgraded and now can not update contacts

I upgraded to the new iPhone software last night and now can not edit contacts.  Help!

    Hi icsailor,
This sounds like a known issue reported here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=713014
There was a workaround posted, but I've not tested it myself. Here are the steps.
    # Go into Yahoo Messenger Options - Change the Window in the dropdown to Tab and press OK.
    # Then go back and switch it to small window and press OK.
Once the bug is officially resolved, you could try running a Nightly or Aurora build to use the fix early.
    Hopefully this helps!

I've been trying to find a way to do this since I updated to IOS 7, and I've just found the solution/explanation, even tho is a bit heavy to carry out.
IOS 6 creates custom labels and save them giving you the option to delete them.
IOS 7 creates custom labels but don't save them, so there is no need to have the option to delete them.
But here comes the problem, if you have some custom labes saved in you Iphone / Ipad with IOS 6 and you update it to IOS 7, the device will keep those labels saved, but you wont be able to delete them.
I realized this by going to contacts on Icloud. There those labels that I had on my devices weren't there. So simply restoring your device and configuring it as a new one to later sync your Icloud Contacts, will solve the problem.
I know this post is old, but I might just try this with iOS 8. I have outdated custom labels that annoy me, because I still seem them in the list as options. If I get desperate enough, I may try your solution.
